    Default [3.5/PF] Humanoid Monsters

Not looking for "human warrior 12" or "elf wizard 6" or whatever. I'm looking for humanoids that either explicitly advance by Hit Dice, or Humanoid "monsters" that just have more than a couple type-based HD.

Giants are humanoid (giant) in PF, so all of those have multiple humanoid HD. I'm pretty sure they advance by character class in both PF and 3.5 though.

The last part of your post makes it seem like you're fine with other type of HD as along as the monster is very clearly humanoid shaped and, I'm assuming, Medium sized. Is this correct? If so, what CR or what amount of HD are you looking for?

I think there's a few giants (especially the Dusk giant) that advances by HD. But with a quick glance it looks like most do advance through classes.

Technically true, although not quite what I was looking for (forgot giants were changed that way in PF). Still, I'll keep it in mind as a backup.

I'll clarify: I'm not looking for "monsters that are shaped like humanoids", I'm looking for "monsters that are of the Humanoid creature type" that aren't just...inherently really weak. I'm not specific on number of HD, or how high the CR is, but...idk probably at minimum 5+ HD? That seems like it takes it out of the usual realm.

That'd be my guess. Although if I'm counting giants for my search, giants tend to have lots of HD, so it's still useful in any case.

What's the goal? Are you trying to animate them as buff undead?

Higher-level game where we gestalt class levels with monsters, and I was going through creature types looking for neat ideas and humanoid didn't really seem to have any. At least not in 3.5 (and so I assumed PF was similarly lacking). A high-HD humanoid, or a low-HD humanoid that can advance by HD, would be pretty neat. Giant is the obvious answer, and 3.5 lycanthropes (although I should check if PF still has them work that way or not).

    Which sources are acceptable?
    3.0?
    Magazines?
    3rd-party?
Non-D&D d20 games (Call of Cthulhu, Diablo, Warcraft)?

"I will consider anything you can source and generally approve anything you can convince me you can do the paperwork for without my help."

Thus far, general 3.5/PF stuff hasn't gotten called out. Spheres is on the table, and a couple dragon mag stuff. I wouldn't expect non-D&D stuff to be approved (like...idk...a rancor from Star Wars Saga Edition?), but I guess I can't rule it out.

    EDIT:

And I guess it's a little bit cheating, but homebrew is maybe on the table too. I know some people have been talking about oslacamo's stuff. I'm trying to steer clear of that, though.

SOme stuff to be found in this thread:

    https://forums.giantitp.com/showthre...d-and-how-many

    Mutant Four-Armed gargoyle has 21HD.

For templates, as well as Lycanthrope, Multiheaded can add racial HD without changing type.

I know there's a large Naga with the humanoid type in Oriental Adventures (I think?) somewhere, but I have no idea what it's called. I've seen it referenced when talking about viable hosts for the Symbiotic Creature template (being basically the only Large example that doesn't require Human Heritage).

On that note, Human Heritage will give any "human descended" monster the humanoid type. As a DM, I would include undead that used to be human in that, since they keep all of their undead traits (including no Con and such), so it's not 'curing' undeath, it's just making it so they don't ping on detect spells and such.

Incarnate Construct also makes any Medium or smaller construct Humanoid.

Exactly what kind of character are you trying to play? That may also dictate how things go. There may be a ton of Monstrous Humanoids that fit the bill. Like a Gloom for stealth. Also, the spell Return to Nature can shrink a Giant (eventually) down to medium. Theoretically, Ruby Ray of reversal could return the giant to their previous size. Or a custom magic item that does both at will. If size was a concern.

I'm mostly just trying to get an idea of what my options even are on the monster side. Found an interesting one earlier - Entropic Reaper is fairly straightforward Undead with a SoS/SoD on a weapon hit, and not much else. Might be good for a Fighter, or a battle cleric. PF giant might have a neat combo with the Xen'drik Giant template that makes giants more magic-friendly. Might be neat to find a CR 12 Tiny/smaller Fey and make them a stealth-specialist rogue.

Looking over humanoids currently to see what sparks neat ideas.

Before going for homebrew I would extend the request to humanoid shaped creatures imho.

There are nice things like the Redcap (fey) (see my Papa Smurf build who wildshapes into it).
Redcaps are small sized feys, with the Powerful Build trait.

Further they have a special type of Advancement where they get extra stats for each HD. They can get extra HD for dipping their hats into the blood of their dead victims (I would disable the latter for the PCs to balance it out).

Kaiju template (Dragon #289) makes the base creature Colossal and gives +40 HD; originally, it's applicable to Animal, Magical Beast, or Vermin - but sidebar lists all other types too (including Humanoid); static Int 2 may be problematic, so... make it Venerable Kaiju?

I want to mention flinds so badly, but they don't get nearly enough to make up for their base ECL of 4.
    The future is bright.
