Default This thread is 3D printed.

So I just got my resin printer set up, and I'm surprised we didn't already have a thread for 3D printing.

Fresh off mine is a Starfinder skittermander. 'Cept one of his left arms did not come out right.

I'm super interested in resin printers, especially given recent events.

For those unfamiliar with the fun of owning a 3D printer....

I'm finding ventilation and cleanup to be the biggest drawbacks of a resin printer. The liquid resin smells nasty and sticks to everything, so having a well-ventilated area you can run printer and print cleanup in is essential.

Ooh, fun! I don't have my own printer, so I have to use the ones at the library (when it's open ) or at Shapeways. Mostly what I do is dice (there's a link in the RPG Member Commercial Content thread), but lately, I've been working on a more ambitious (and much slower) project: Between 3D printing and laser-cutting, I think I can come up with a design for a real, functioning tuba, that could be made for under $100.

I've done a little plastic welding slide-vuvuzela project before, and one of the things I encountered during my research is that copper wind instruments are made of copper because of its antimicrobial properties. Plastic (probably highly dependent on the exact plastic used) could prove quite a good growing surface for quite a few different biological nasties if regularly provided with fresh spit. This wasn't much of a problem for my project, because I wasn't going to be playing it that much. (After all, referee whistles and the likes are often made from plastic, and those seem to do just fine.) But if you're thinking on tackling big tuba it might be worth taking into consideration.

    Cool project though.

So I'm realizing why so many of my prints are coming out warped: I'm using an open window for ventilation, this puts the room's temperature well above the 25C my resin recommends.

I'm, trying an overnight print now while it's cooler out. If this works, I'll then be able to use a dyer duct to vent the fumes and mostly close the window.

I had the privilege to work with a custom built direct laser writing system as part of my Master's thesis, which is basically single micron resolution 3D printing. I'm not there anymore sadly, but while there I had pretty free reign to use the thing when I wanted. Not really accessible tech, but I wanted to share.

Lab also had a conventional Formlabs printer which served us pretty well.

You printed statues so small you need (well, not quite need need, but certainly getting close) an electron microscope to properly image it?

    Nice.

Got 2 FDM printers at work but as a sometimes wargame am really interested in resin. The one thing that stuck with me while looking at youtube vids, you eventually have to change the screen it uses to cure. That's a significant cost (relative to machine).

And working with the resins seems very very messy.

But the resin printers do seem to be doing today roughly what I was hoping 10-15 years ago 3D priting might be then. Hoping another 5-10 years will make them more normal people friendly.

Yep! And it just takes straight STL files too.

Thanks, Peelee! Best Silver Dragon in the world!

I've got a problem with my printer, and I was wondering if the Playground could help.

It's an Anycubic Photon resin printer, and I can't seem to get my prints to stick to the build plate. The first few prints came out fine, well, mostly fine, but lately they end up as a thin film on the bottom of the resin tray. I clean off the build plate (and the resin tray) after each print with isopropyl alcohol, and filter the resin as well. I've replaced the film at the bottom of the resin tray to no avail.

Any suggestions on getting my builds to stick to the plate instead of the tray?

Honestly I would have go at YouTube and specialist 3D printer forums. When I was messing about with the ones at work those two things really helped.

Usually not sticking to buildplates is an issue with how close the printer starts extruding (ie how much it smushes the first layer to grip the plate). It's a bit different on a resin printer as it does it backwards but might want to make sure it's properly calibrated. On a FDM printer you need to recalibrate the extrusion to palte distances as it's all a bit loose.

Yeah, that sounds like it's time for bed leveling. Resin printers are perhaps touchier on this than FDM...a raft gives you some tolerance with the latter, but if there's too much gap for resin, you just get floating chunks that are kind of obnoxious to clean up.

Yeah, except that the chunks aren't floating - they're stuck to the bed, and need to be scraped off.

So re-level the unit (my son has an app on his smart phone for that), and then position the build plate as close to the bottom as possible. The first part is easy, the second is a bit more tricky. You want ti as close as possible, but you don't want to crack the window.

I've heard from a Reddit user that the reason the Anycubic Photon prints keep failing is that the arm suspending the build plate actually interferes with the top edge of the resin tank when it tries to zero out, preventing the build plate from reaching the 'zero' position.

The user recommends trying a dry run (no resin), pausing the print run as the plate attempts to hit 'zero', and then seeing if you can slide the resin tank around. If you can't the arm has hit the edge of the tank, and the build plate won't hit the bottom of the tray. Thus, no print.

Time to go test it out.

Edit: It worked! I loosened the screws securing the build plate to the mounting arm and inserted a trimmed piece of plastic needlepoint mesh in between them before tightening the screws up tightly. I re-zeroed the plate, and my print run produced a nice print of the supports for my model.

    But not my model itself....

Time to tinker with the size of the supports.
