However, resources in the mines are low nowdays and we cannot share a single gold piece with a greedy reptile. Since metallic dragons are good from their own nature, it won't be a difficult mission. Hopefully. (Unfortunately, the young adult Golden Dragon, called Nostos, has absolutely no intention of leaving his new lair except if bribed with the extreme amount of 10000 gp or if severly wounded in a fair combat; Nostos is level 19 Boss and severly wounded means to be dropped to 1/4 of his full hp.)

So, if you start bringing White Tower Elixirs here and there I will send assassins to get you, okay? (Patericus actually lacks the resources to hire anything more than a few thugs. So, if the party helps many dwarves to stop smoking they may encounter 1d6+6 level 3 Troopers and, after defeating them, they gain extra 3000 XP and find 30 gp as well as pictures of the party. My boys claim the rat people took their toys but the boys just imagine things, right? (9000 XP, 90 gp) (If the party members search the cellar, with a DC 17 Feel check they will notice some stone blocks feel light enough to be moved. To the other side lies a corridor that leads to the sewers and to the wererat's lair. After the battle, the party finds a small chest with 250 gp behind the Rat King's throne.)

(Actually, Adonn Ironminer and Vericia Bronzeminer are in love but their families think they can buy higher social status with their good-looking children, so there you are.)

    Recent History:
Dwarvenna started as a mining colony where its dwarves suffered greatly from the Fire Giant Thanos and his Hounds. Thanos abused the dwarves greatly and, as a result, many of them tried to escape their misery by smoking and drinking. As a result, many of early dwarves had been heavy smokers and alcoholics.
A traveling dwarf mage known only as Magus felt sorry for them. He managed to overthrow the Fire Giant Thanos and his Hounds. However, many dwarves were still violent and angry due to heavy smoking and alcoholism, since they lacked the money to satisfy their passion. In order to help them, Magus used an old magic recipe of his master and crafted some boxes full of never-ending cigars and some kegs of never-ending lager. These boxes and kegs remain inside the cellars of most of Dwarvenna families even today. Some use them even today, some not.
After the defeat of Fire Giant Thanos, the dwarves elected a mayor and that mayor gave them a sirname to have according to their profession or skill or history. Half of the families were miners of some sort and the other half were smiths of some sort.

    Areas:
The Central Square where the market takes place. All the families gather there around the fountain to trade common items and stories as well as sell their more expensive equipment to traveling merchants, nobles and adventurers.
The Dwarvenna Apple Orchard where the apple trees always and every time of the year have healthy and big apples, ready to feed every hungry humanoid. Dwarves also use their apples to make tasty ale and delicious apple pies.
The Big Alley Inn is indeed an inn next to a big alley. The empty space next to its big alley is used for the caravans of Dwarvenna to set up their tents, to tie their mules and to spend the night. The inn was used to be ran by the Coldminers but now it is empty.
The Stables are used mostly for the large wild boars that are used like mounts for the Dwarvenna Guards when they do their guard duty at day or night. Guards are the elders of each family.
The Twin Gates Barracks protect the city from any invaders. The Twin Gates Barracks has the dwarven destroyers as the soldiers of the city that are the married adults of the city.
The House of Justice is the place where the mayor works and runs the city from there. It is also the place where any trials take place.
The Dwavenna Mines have 3 layers. In the first layer they have copper, in the second silver and in the third gold.
The Dwarvenna Lake is quite big because the local avalanches bring snow, ice and water in it.
The Dwarvenna Forest is also quite big and wild. Its trees have offered wild fruit, hunting game (despite the fact they don't eat meat they enjoy hunting as a sport) and wood to Dwarvenna for more than decades.
The Sewers is not a lovely place and it may keeps many secrets in it but it should be explored cautiously.
The House of Lord is the Church of the city. A cleric known as Samaritan, the only human in this dwarven city, takes care of the temple. Samaritan is level 14 Commander and has immunities to pacify, amaze and dominate. He also knows all the rituals and sells them for a profit.

    Some assorted thoughts:
-Are any of the fathers or mothers in a given family related to parents in other families (ex. are Uran Snowminer and Desertia Sandminer siblings?) This seems fairly important in terms of tying the town together, but isn't presented here.

-What jobs do the families have today? A lot of them don't have traits that describe their job, implying that they either don't have one or are involved in the family business, but which is which is unclear. How does the town get enough food to survive- do they get it all from the orchard? Are there designated 'gatherers' whose job it is to gather apples, or does each family go out to the orchard each night to get dinner? If every married adult dwarf is a member of the guard, who's doing the primary economic work for the town?

-Almost all ages are close to a multiple of 50. Is this reflective of some attribute of dwarven birthrate? What happened to everyone aged 150?

-Generally, I'm curious about the state of dwarven education; what kept, say, Readaria, from being able to teach Elma to read? How did she successfully teach her other five children, but not Elma? Is Elma dyslexic?

-The family job names seem bizarre to me. How can a family be specifically known for their fine craftsmanship of a specific body part? Did the Armorsmiths learn to make armors as a complete piece, but are unable to craft kneecaps specifically? The Coalminers specifically mined coal- did they just skip over metals as they came across them?
My one piece of homebrew: The Shaman. A Druid replacement with more powerlevel control.
The bargain bin- malfunctioning, missing, and broken magic items.
Spirit Barbarian: The Barbarian, with heavy elements from the Shaman. Complete up to level 17.
The Priest: A cleric reword which ran out of steam. Still a fun prestige class suitable for E6.
The Coward: Not every hero can fight.

-The families are not related to each other in Dwarvenna, with a few exceptions maybe. The families are made like this in general; the grandmother and grandfather live with their first female child and her husband and their grandchildren. They almost always are families of 10 members and even their houses are built that way.

-Due to the apple trees providing enough food for everyone and having enough water from the lake (and even getting water from the ale from the magic keg) the dwarves do not need to do jobs for survival anymore. However, they have their pride, so they still practice their blacksmithing somewhere in their house (Dwarvenna's houses are big and they have a separated building for blacksmithing or leatherworking or whatever). Every adult member of each family, even the most lazy ones, know at least the basic craft of their family's name and every family has also a special member who is a master to that craft (or to some similar craft). Furthermore, many study or practice pottery or poetry or whatever art or craft they believe it can be useful for them both economically and mentally. Finally, the guard duty is done for free and on shifts by the dwarves themselves in order to make sure their city and their laws are on place.

-I do not mention it somewhere (not clearly at least), but the Dwarves in my world can decide exactly when they will have children with their mate. This allows them, for example, for many dwarves to select the same year to have their children and many dwarves do the same with their marriages. That is why we encounter the same ages many times.

-Elma is not dyslexic, it just in her character that she doesn't want to be taught by Readaria. In general, because Dwarvenna lacks a public school (for now), the parents or private teachers have to teach the children to read and count and the history and everything...

-Armorsmiths know how to craft a full suit of armor, but they just don't specialize at a specific body part which they can craft very well. It is awkward but that it is what it makes it a fantasy setting imho. As for the coal miners, they had a "6th sense" on locating that specific mineral and they were pretty good at mining it too. Of course, they could mine other metals too.

Could you elaborate on this? For a given grandmother and grandfather (say, Traubon and Artin Hammersmith), this implies that their first female child was Liftrasa, and they have no other children in this village, so Liftrasa has no local brothers or sisters. Did Thanos allow all their other children to leave the village?

-I do not mention it somewhere (not clearly at least), but the Dwarves in my world can decide exactly when they will have children with their mate. Huh. It's a shocking degree of coordination, but doesn't explain the gender ratios among the elders: 46/48 grandfathers are exactly 400, 47/48 grandfathers are exactly 350- where are the 400-year old grandmothers and the 350-year old grandfathers?

-Armorsmiths know how to craft a full suit of armor, but they just don't specialize at a specific body part which they can craft very well. It is awkward but that it is what it makes it a fantasy setting imho. As for the coal miners, they had a "6th sense" on locating that specific mineral and they were pretty good at mining it too. Of course, they could mine other metals too.
Part of the reason I focus on the 'kneecap crafters' is that it feels to me as though the families were designed procedurally- as though they were designed by taking a list of item slots and a family was created to make items for each one. It would make more sense to me, while still fitting the 'fantasy feel', if they possessed exceptional skills with a particular part of general smithing- for example, a gauntlet-smith is particularly good at fitting armor exactly to a person, since that's an important attribute of gauntlets, but that also means they're fairly skilled with making rings as well, which demands a similar skill. Alternatively, I might expect someone to be known for a particular type of item due to a family member making a very powerful artifact of that type in the past.

This makes the name feel more real to me, because it explains how someone can be skilled with smithing for a particular body part, rather than making the skill a mystery.

-Due to the apple trees providing enough food for everyone and having enough water from the lake (and even getting water from the ale from the magic keg) the dwarves do not need to do jobs for survival anymore. So the orchard does provide enough food for the whole community... it makes sense then that they're having a lot of trouble dealing with vices, since there's little impetus to find a job. There's a certain irony in that they were named for their skills with a particular craft, but don't have the energy to pursue those skills anymore.

Did Thanos allow all their other children to leave the village?

Huh. It's a shocking degree of coordination, but doesn't explain the gender ratios among the elders: 46/48 grandfathers are exactly 400, 47/48 grandfathers are exactly 350- where are the 400-year old grandmothers and the 350-year old grandfathers?
I can elaborate on this, but I think it would be more interesting if you elaborate instead (that is a WIP after all and the more people that participate the better). Why there are no other children in this village, aimlessPolymath? Where are the 400-year old grandmothers and the 350-year old grandfathers? :)

    Two possibilities come to mind.
The main thing that comes to mind is a previous marriage tradition that is no longer applicable (note that modern mothers/fathers are approximately 200 years old); note also that the age gap between eldest child and youngest parent is now about 100 years instead of 150 years, implying a cultural change over time. The homogeneity in the family structure is incredibly strong, though, so it's not clear why this would be. There's almost nobody aged 250 or 300, too, which means that this can't be a purely cultural- even a very strong tradition wouldn't prevent those people from existing at all.

(side note: there actually is one significantly larger age-gap, in the Necksmith family, which contains the only 300-year-old person)

A second possibility is that it was related in some way to Thanos' rule, but it's not clear that there's a reason for doing so- how would he benefit? Why would he do such a thing? Having him enforce this just because he wanted to would be very unsatisfying. I also don't know how long it's been since he was vanquished, so this might not even be applicable.

I am asking this question primarily because the incredible homogeneity of the family and gender structure just doesn't make intuitive sense, especially in a city that is noted for its vice, and the primary explanations I come up with are that it's simpler to generate 500 people if their families are nearly all identical. No grandparents are missing, despite living under Thanos(maybe? timeline uncertain), so it's unlikely to be related to deaths; it's possible that the original colonists came from the same generation, but that would explain how all the parents are nearly the same age, not the grandparents.

Great minds think alike... Indeed, the grandparents had a different marriage tradition than the younger couples and that's the answer.

As for missing parents/grandparents, there are 3 reasons no one is missing:

    * reason 1:
If someone grabs this and run it as a campaign setting he/she can add/remove as many parents/grandparents as he/she like. It is better to have more and remove them than to have less and add them.

    * reason 2:
Dwarves are hard people and have managed to survive Thanos' rule.

    * reason 3:
If you read the cosmology of Ruins & Raiders (the RPG that I am making where Dwarvenna is based), you will see the world is actually something like a MMORPG and people are respawned when they are killed. It is as normal as breathing for them (they know it happens, they just don't know why it happens and they just accept it).

@aimlessPolymath: (or everyone else interested) I was thinking of making Dwarvenna a city with less... vice. Any good advice? What should I change to make things more ethical?

The simple solution seems to be...make some of the people have things other than vices. If there are too many people doing the same thing, then switch some of them to have some other traits. Maybe define a group of dwarves that are focused on something else? For example, some of the dwarves might be working on expanding the mine, because they need ore to make things out of. Some of the dwarves might be trying to set up a school, since a significant number of the children aren't able to read or count. Generally, creating groups that are distinct from the larger population will be helpful here; a group of dwarves that abstain from smoking is only interesting if most of the other dwarves do smoke.

Right now, you functionally have a near-monoculture where 90% of the people are giving out the same types of quests (find elixirs, find people with a specific quality) everyone has the same supplies of magic kegs and boxes, families are almost all the same size and almost all have the same ages. The homogeneity seems more important to me than the specifics of the culture- if you switched all the dwarves to be industrious miners, it wouldn't be a much more interesting city than it is right now, because all the dwarves are still basically the same.

(incidentally, did you see my post re: publishing in your Ruins & Raiders thread? You didn't reply to the thread, so I'm not sure)

The reason the same quests are repeated is because I don't expect the players to talk to every family and every family member around, so I imagine that the average adventuring party will come across one or two find-elixir quests or similar quests in general.

However, I will try to fix some of the issues without ruining the overall feeling of the city if possible.

(I read your reply and I really thank you for that, I just didn't replied because I am thinking of my next move.)
