He wasn't quite as complimentary about the people as Set was. Most of them had done nothing to stand up for their village, they'd been reliant on others - outsiders - to solve their problems. Some had consorted with dark powers. No village was an island but he can't help but feel critical of a town that isn't able to stand on its own two feet against its own people. He didn't mind helping, but a part of him says that they're just delaying the inevitable. The Chief was aged, he'd be gone before long - possibly once these troubles were mopped up. He'd seen that happen before. Vargath and Set would move on before long. Would Birel and Selissa suffice when the next threat came? Would the village learn anything from all this?

He keeps the thoughts private. It might be the gnawing in his arm pushing him into negativity, and there was little reason to burden Set with his own musings. "Every day." Vargath replies quietly. "Hopefully after today I'll be able to go see them again," though the niggling doubt in the back of his mind said otherwise. It would be nice if they could tie it all together with a nice bow, solve every problem in the village in only two days and nights. Unlikely, to say the least. "Will you be going back once we're done here?"

Paying very little attention to the murmur of voices below, Selissa stared quietly - as with everything she did - into the bright whorls of stars above. After all this was done, she would leave, she thought. Perhaps she could try teaching a few of the younger humans how to forestwalk, how to shoot a bow, so that it was not defenceless when she was gone. Well, as well as humans could - they did not have the connection to the deepwoods that forest elves did, too connected to houses and farms and so-called civilisation to ever truly connect to the forest in the same way. It was hard to blame them, she supposed. Their lives were short and often filthy things, racing from birth to the grave without the time for deeper reflection but a desperate clawing to safeguard a future for their next generations.

There would be hard times ahead for the village, whatever happened. They had lost a number of them to demons, their shop shut now that a devil - Selissa spared a second to damn Weldry Wessen for a hells-bound fool - had been revealed as accountant. Even with the curse broken, they had lost a season of crops, of beasts, and did not have the skills to get all their food from the wilds.

Selissa listened to the whistling, still and silent as an alabaster roof decoration, as it split the sanctity of the night, a distant harbinger of the undead menace cursing this misbegotten village. The soft back-and-forth flow of voices below didn't stop; it didn't seem like they'd noticed.

Alone on the roof, Selissa let herself breathe out a long sigh. She felt tired in a way that had nothing to do with physical exertion - though, admittedly, there was a little of that too, it had been five years since she'd done more than hunt deer - and for a brief second let her green eyes fall shut. She opened them, her face once again an impassive mask, took a few steps, and leapt off the roof to fall like a meteor's ghost, landing with a soft thwump next to the two warriors.

"Halfblood. Cursed," she said, her voice a sharp whisper. "The witch comes.East. Listen."

    Inside the Oaken Larder

Aylea follows Birel into the kitchens of the Oaken Larder with a slightly bewildered look on her face, and her perplextion only grows as Birel's wand instantaneously removed dirt and dried blood that had probably been on her skin for weeks. When presented with clothes she smiles like a child opening birthday gifts. She needs a little bit of assistance getting her feet in the right holes for the underclothes, and she struggles with the buttons at her bosom, opting to leave them unfastened and therefore showing off ample bosom, but when she is fully dressed she looks more than presentable, if in need of a stiff brushing through her tangled hair. While assisting the lunatic, Birel can also hear the whistling. Just like Selissa, it forces it's way into her perceptions even from a great distance, but as it comes closer the effect is more pronounced for both elves. It hurts elven ears like a nail being dragged down slate, and evokes a distant flight response- elven instincts say to get AWAY from the source of this infernal noise. Thankfully for both of the elves of Dam'ess, the whistling suddenly stops.

    Outside the Oaken Larder

When the whistling stops, it has come close enough that both Vargath and Set can hear it through the silence of the night, though neither one of them experiences any pain, unsettled feelings, or any other special response to the sound. To them it just sounds like repetitive, skilled whistling. The night is silent as the grave for several potent seconds before it is again pierced by singing. This time it is a man's voice, rising above the chatter from the tavern like a bird taking flight. A rich, full throated tune can be heard by all the party, slowly coming closer and closer. Selissa and Vargath can just barely make out the dark form of a humanoid entering the village from the East.

    Who can take a sunrise
    Sprinkle it in dew
    Cover it in chocolate
    and a miracle or two?

    The candyman!
    The candyman can!
The candyman can cause he mixes it with love and makes the world taste good!

    Who can take a rainbow
    Wrap it is a sigh
    Soak it in the sun
and make a strawberry lemon pie?

    The candyman!
    The candyman can!
The candyman can cause he mixes it with love and makes the world taste good!

    Doctor Fixer tastes
    Everything he makes
    Satisfying and delicious!
    Talk about your childhood wishes!
You can even eat the dishes!

    Who can take tomorrow
    Dip it in a deam
    Separate the sorrow
And collect up all the cream?

    The candyman!
The candyman can cause he mixes it with love
And makes the world taste good!

This song grows progressively louder as the source comes closer. Candles and lamps are lit in homes, and people shout angrily about the noise, but somehow any complaint is drown out by the beautifully voiced, skilled song. Coming from the East, now Set can also make out a dark, humanoid figure coming closer as the song reaches it's crescendo. Vargath and Selissa are the first to make out that the form is dancing- quick stepping, clicking heels, prancing, and twirling a staff or cane in time with the music. Entering the village square, this form is revealed to be a thin, tall human man in a fine, immaculate pinstripe suit. He carries a black cane with a brass head in the shape of two snakes twined together, but other than that he is unarmed and unarmored. He has a dark, prodigious, precisely manicured moustache and a cheeky black hat in the shape of a bowl that rests at a rakish angle on his head. He enters into the village square in a series of leaps before tucking forward into an acrobat's tumble, coming to rest on one knee with the skill of a dancer before throwing his hands up and delivering the final line of the song in a merry shout. Somehow it almost comes across as threatening.

And the world tastes so good cause the candyman thinks it should!

Nimbly he stands up, adjusts his bowler hat, and strides the last five yards of the square to approach the party members outside of the Oaken Larder, spinning his cane idly in one hand before sharply planting it into the ground. "Ladies and gentlemen, I apologize for my early arrival but I was so overjoyed by the prospect of meeting you all that I metaphorically FLEW all the way here! And boy howdy are my arms tired from all that flapping!" He flashes a winning smile before extending a leg and lowering himself in a deep bow, using his shoulder to bump his hat off his head, rolling it down his arm to his hand, and extending hand and hat in a servant's gesture. "Dr. Fixer, herald of the great Lady Bo'Tel, at your service. I'll admit, I know a little bit about you all, but it would be rude to presume, so I'll politely let you introduce yourselves, if you'll pardon my precognication of your esteemed personships." He speaks quickly and eloquently, as though he were reciting carefully prepared lines, and the man's force of personality is obvious and impressive, even to someone who has distaste for him.

This song takes a few minutes, so feel free to roleplay during Dr. Fixer's approach, or to come out of the inn and join the others in Birel's case.

Birel comes out at the sound of the song, suggesting Aylea remains inside. When Dr. Fixer finishes his song and dance and introduces himself as "herald of the great Lady Bo'Tel" she can't stop herself from scoffing and commenting derisively, "What self-respecting witch needs a herald?" Not so much unimpressed with Dr. Fixer himself, but with the woman he's here representing for needing a song and dance in the first place, where a proper witch should feel her presence is awe inspiring enough.

"Not me," Set responds to the Mighty, pausing to look up at the stars and wondering whether his sisters were free to do the same. Set wasn't any closer to understanding the dream that had sent him on the path to Dam'ess, but until he found a sign one way or another, he had to keep searching for them here. Even if the threat of Pale Night ceased to be or had nothing to do with his sisters, Set had made a promise. He'd forsaken his people long ago to free what was left of his family from the threat of the Shadowkeeper. Better to stay away and long for home than to return home and contribute to its demise.

"Do you think," Set starts to ask, jumping visibly as Evergreen appears from nowhere in the darkness, a soft thump the only clue about her former whereabouts. Without time to recover, Set flinches at the title "Cursed," but accepts it as a given, too interested in the words that follow to dwell on it. He stands mute, listening intently to the sounds of a midsummer's night, but without the satisfaction of hearing what she means. He's about to break the silence again to ask what she'd heard when it finally becomes audible, growing slowly louder before whistling stops and the man breaks into song.

The Candyman. Dr. Fixer. The herald of Bo'tel. A man of many titles. The Candyman's song slithers into Set's mind, taking up residence as he stares, squinting into the darkness. Even after the song ends, Set is still spellbound until Birel finally breaks him free, her words calculated to jar him back to reality.

"What self-respecting witch needs a herald?"

The Candyman had seemed to hold the world in the palm of his hand through force of personality alone, but Set can feel his wits returning as he examines the man in a new light as his North Star shines toward the newcomer. Thankfully some actual light from the Oaken Larder also falls on the stranger so that he can see the good doctor more clearly. Questions abound in Set's mind as he looks over the other man. His eyes dwell for a moment on the twin snakes writhing atop the Candyman's cane, but Set keeps silent, waiting patiently for him to answer Birel before introducing himself much more carefully than he might have if she had not intervened.

"I am Set Al-Sayyid," the Cursed, he says, matching the man title for title, but continuing his bitter introduction silently. Bearer of the Changeling's Mark. Second son of Geb the Viper, brother to Sirus, the rightful King of Abydos before he fell by my hand.

Vargath's frown is pronounced. He was getting entirely too many fey vibes already, and hopes of someone straightforward and easy to talk to are slipping away. Why couldn't these 'people' just drop the false pomp and say things that they mean instead of dressing it all up? A rose is a rose. He holds back his comments, not for fear of offending (he cared little for that) but simply to avoid dragging things out further. "Vargath Hubrecht. Will Moira be joining us tonight?" Cut straight to the heart, don't get pulled into small talk. 'Dr. Fixer' might not be in any hurry but Vargath did still have a ticking clock up his arm, and he didn't want promises from a middleman.

He also would like to sleep, though what his mind might show him in the night is another matter entirely.

Dr. Fixer stands upright again in a swift, agile motion, seeming to slide upward from the floor. His grin grows at Birel's comment, then frowns at Vargath's in a very animated, expressive manner. He begins to idly twirl his cane at rapid speeds, keeping the baton afloat with practiced ease, turning to Birel. "You see miss... well I won't assume your name out of politeness sake... you see Lady Bo'Tel is the noble in charge of this here village. She's a busy woman! Landed gentry! So she needs someone to sweep up, and someone to cook her meals, and someone to meet people. That's me. Herald to my noble Lady. I meet people and spread good health, good word, and good gossip in equal measure! All while moonlighting as a humble physician of mystical medicine, a verifiable shaman, and a maker of miracles!" Then he nods at Set with a subtle side eyed wink before turning to Vargath. He dramatically clears his throat before responding.

"Lady Moira Taggart Bo'Tel, Keeper of the Dark Key, Lady of the Lake, invites you all to her humble home to dine with her so she may give you thanks for your great service to her community." He turned himself toward Set and began murmuring loudly over his hand, mocking a private conversation with the spear bearer while speaking loud enough to hear. "I hear she's gonna thank you in other ways, too! Real generous like!" Then he resumes his normal posture. "If you agree I'm to escort you to Lake Bo'Tel at your convenience, guide you to her manor, and deliver you forthwith to delicious edibles and praise as only a great noble is capable!"

"Oh. So she's not a witch at all. She's a noble." Birel says with clear disdain, for she knew well enough that a proper witch was someone focused on their goals and practical matters and nobles were those whose lives revolved around what they felt entitled to.

"Well, since she made an appointment with us here but couldn't deign to keep it, she can wait till tomorrow. Those of us who actually do our own work are tired at the end of the day and don't have time for all these pointless taking of airs and posturing by imposing on others." Birel adds... and then just starts walking off to her home to get some rest.

Birel might have the luxury of waiting. Vargath did not. His arm aches, and he is tired, but not tired enough to want this conversation to be delayed. He glances at Birel's retreating form before back to the herald. "If Moira is extending the invite now then I'd like to see her as soon as possible," he rumbles. He still found the herald's attitude decidedly unpleasant, but meeting the witch faster meant bypassing the pomp faster. "I'm ready to go now." He'd have to trust his own arcane readings would be sufficient for spotting any traps or holes in the witch's words. A glance at Set and Selissa, trying to gauge their response. Safety in numbers, but he would go alone if he had to. Reckless maybe. Foolish maybe. But they didn't have a ticking clock in their blood.

Selissa regarded the herald the same way a man might regard the puddle of vomit in their kitchen from an alcoholic guest; with half-hidden (for those who could read the stoic elf, at least) disgust and a sort of resigned acceptance, for the elf had expected some new kind of strange and wicked creature to be the herald. As phantom pains still pushed needles through her eardrums, she remained silent when names were asked for.

If the undead witch wanted her name, she could damn well ask herself when Selissa put an arrow in her throat.

If the thing still had a throat.

She watched like a ghost as Birel spoke and turned, and Vargath made his choice. He was probably shaken up from his bite still. Maybe he even thought that a undead monster might be able to cure him with magic, but that was a foolish thing to put his hope in.

Her mouth quirked in a frown because the half-orc was being really stupid. She resolved to tell him this. She took a second to try working out how to word things eloquently.

"Halfblood," she said, meeting his glance. She gave him a tiny shake of the head, her luminous green eyes not leaving his. "Night. Undead. Going now is really stupid. Go in the morn."

    And the far stars cried, and the planets yearned;

"The Lady Bo'Tel sounds as generous as you are loquacious," he responds, bowing his head to the good doctor.

Set can't help feeling swayed as the man's magnetism seems to combine with the promise of so much more. Even his North Star and Evergreen's evident disdain isn't enough to overcome the jarring realization that this man, this Candyman held the solution to their most pressing problem: how could they fix what ailed the Mighty? Dr. Fixer! If ever they needed to quiet their own misgivings and follow a strange man into the forest, this was it.

And yet, even as it becomes clear the Mighty has picked up on the Candyman's capabilities, Set's North Star turns away, shining her light towards the tavern and her home beyond. Set tries to contain his mounting alarm as she heads in one direction while Vargath prepares to head in the other. Before Set can speak, his heart sinks further as Evergreen makes it plain they should wait until morning. But why? Why wait when this was something they could change? This was something they should worry about. If Dr. Fixer and the Lady Bo'Tel could do anything to help the Mighty, they couldn't refuse their invitation. Could they?

"Dr. Fixer! I'd be honored to accept the Lady's gratitude, hopefully sooner rather than later. No doubt we all have much to discuss if her House oversees lands we share a vested interest in," Set says quickly, nodding to the Candyman. He tries very hard to match the other man's good-cheer even as his eyes stray to either side. "A moment, please."

Set spins around, darting after his North Star first since she's actively walking away. He places himself in her path, putting his hands up to plead his case. "Wait!" he whispers urgently, "wait wait wait...Birel, please. We can't just scorn their offer, can we?" He quails for a moment at telling her what she already knows, but presses on regardless for the Mighty's sake. "This Candyman holds the key. He can fix Vargath, can't he? I don't know anything about the disease in Vargath's blood, but if he's only got a week," Set says, abandoning the thought as he struggles for the right words.

Set finally just shakes his head, letting his arms drop to his sides as he shrugs. "I have to go. If the Lady's gratitude could amount to getting the Candyman to fix him, I have to go. Come with us," Set pleads. He didn't want to think about the possibility that the Three would become Two, or just One. But if only One was bent on going, he damn sure wasn't going to let the Mighty go alone.

Vargath rounding on Selissa isn't aggressive, but it might be a bit faster than intended. "A week is my maximum limit," he points to his bite wound, his voice a low growl. "It's not a minimum. The change is already starting. I can smell better than before, but anything other than blood on my tongue tastes like dusty piss." He's not trying to convince Selissa, not really. He's mostly reassuring and explaining himself. "The Chief thought we'd be meeting tonight, not tomorrow. That expectation is there. He didn't even want us to fight her, just talk. That's what we were resolved to do, why back out now?" He shakes his head, standing back.

"If there's a good reason not to go, I don't see it. We knew she was dangerous from the start, that's why we got hired in the first place." He's resolved, he realises. There's no option to wait, not while the sword still hangs over his neck.

Birel sighs and walks back over and barely glancing at Dr Fixer she says, "Excuse us for a moment." and then takes both Set and Vargath by the hand after gesturing for Selissa to follow and leads them back inside the tavern to a place they can talk alone (probably the back room where she dressed Aylea a few minutes ago.

Once they're all inside she says to them, "Yes Vargath, there are very good reasons not to go right now. The fact that neither of the two of you boys could see them is all the evidence we need that you should get some sleep to confront this situation in the morning after your minds have time to clear and you're not so tired you're missing key details."

"You've already bungled things a bit by showing this minion of hers that we're not a united front. And he likely also picked up on your desperation. Both of these are terrible starts to talks with an undead 'witch' 'noble' that has shown us already that she doesn't mind breaking or at least bending her word to put us at a disadvantage. If we go now with the two of you behaving the way you are, she'll feel able to try and force us to agree to absolutely anything. Especially if she can sense you're so desperate to relieve yourself from your curse that you'll thoughtlessly take on even worse."

"And then there's the fact that outside of you throwing caution to the wind in your desperation, I think at best there's a fifty/fifty chance we won't be able to reach any kind of compromise with her at all. So entering what is possibly going to be a fight in her home, as Selissa point out, during the night is reckless beyond all reason. At the very least, our willingness to go along at her beck and call to a situation where we are obviously going to be under more threat from her will tell her that we're foolish or lack spine or both. Which does us no favors."

"So yes, you two absolutely can go right now and wind up agreeing to things you and everyone in this land will likely regret for the rest of your lives. Or you can get some sleep so you're able to think rationally and we can show this 'noble' that if she wants anything from us, she'll actually have to offer terms we can at least stomach. And if it comes to a fight that we'll at least have a chance of getting out alive."

Vargath snaps back, despite himself. "Perhaps I missed a meeting in which we all agreed to blow off our agreed plans? Did you all enjoy a discussion without me where we chose to snub the incredibly powerful witch who specifically sent an enchanted invitation to us?" he casts his eyes around the group, looking at them each in turn. "No, I expect I didn't, so why you would choose to go against the plan without talking to us about it first, Birel, makes me wonder why you'd turn around and accuse Set or I of 'bungling' this." Tossing blame around served no one, just served to foster negativity, but equally it felt incorrect to let accusations fall on him - or Set - of showing discord first. "You're worried about being reckless? I can't see anything more reckless than actively refusing her invitation solely because - apparently - she's also a noble as well as a witch. I can't wait to see her reaction when she hears that, should go down a treat!" Vargath's exasperated tone is clear for everyone to hear. He could not care less about such things, and can't comprehend why they would be important. He has no fealty to nobility, some are awful, but some he met were fine. Like pretty much every other group of people being people.

He takes a deep breath and steps back, trying to calm the fire surging through his veins, fire that told him to just abandon words entirely. When he next speaks he's calm again, even if the undercurrent of frustration still lingers. "Neither path is without issues, both of them have problems and benefits, and I don't see one outweighing the other. We go now, we're tired. We wait, we insult her by refusing her invitation." He'd been sticking to their original plan, he told himself. The one they agreed on. New plan meant new agreement required, it wasn't something he could decide on his own. "Another vote then, on how we proceed, and a coin toss in case we can't agree?"

    "Have to assume fight,"
she added. "So go in with full strength. Sunlight. She's undead. A monster. Do not forget."
She gave Vargath a expressionless look, her thoughts hidden behind her expression. Finally she added, almost gently, and perhaps a tad engimatically for those not used to her:

Set might have been upset at the idea of being treated like a child if not for a memory that presses on him while watching Birel and Vargath fight. In it he is a child, just a boy again hiding on a balcony while Sirus and Sisi argue below.

    ***

"At least give him and the other boys wooden spears until he's a little older," Sisi says, her eyes fierce as she stares up at their brother.

"We're Abydosians. We train for war and in war men use steel."

"He's not a man! He's a boy for all the god's sake. And he's Marked. What do you think's going to happen? Do you think the Nobles just forgot the last War where they slaughtered every Changeling they could get their hands on? Do you think their sons haven't heard every story of how grotesque and awful they are, how every single one needs to be put to the sword and burned? Our own grandfather killed them in droves! How long do you think it'll take for one of the other boys to have an 'accident?' Are you trying to get him killed?"

"I'm trying," Sirus says, temper flaring, "to get him ready to defend himself. Do you think it's going to get easier? That men will just stop trying to kill him once he's got a beard? He has to learn to fight against anyone and everyone that isn't the three of us, and he has to learn now."

    "He's just a boy!"

"He is not just a boy. He's our brother."

The boy-Set backs away, bumping into his other Sister. He hadn't even heard her breathe coming up behind him, yet there she was. Always the quiet one, Sythpen.

"She's right." Sythpen looks down at Set as if she's sorry to have to say it, but she has to say it all the same. "It's not safe, Set. The Nobles and their sons...they don't care who's family you belong to or how old you are," she says sadly, reaching out to hug him. Set hugs her back, his eyes giving moisture to the desert even as his mouth forms a firm line of resolve.

    ***

"The safest route," Set says tiredly, trying hard to dismiss the memory of his siblings, "isn't always the best. What's safest for you and me," he continues, looking to Evergreen, "might not be safest for Vargath, if we can't find anyone else able to cure him." Looking to his North Star, "I don't care what she might think of us or how many hoops she wants us to jump through to come see her. Vargath put himself between us and the wolves, and took the bite that could've been mine. Or yours. Or yours," he says to Evergreen. "Do you know how to fix him? Do you?" he asks, turning back to Birel. "Does the Chief?"

Set waits for a few beats, then says, "if there's no one else, then let's go pay our respects and see if her 'gratitude' extends far enough to help Vargath. If not," he says, chewing on the inside of his cheek as the enormity of it settles on him, "let's find out what else she wants."

"Did she blow us off?" He's not quite sure who the note ended up with, but he drags his mind back over the wording. "As I recall it said we'd meet her agent here at midnight. It's midnight, we've met her agent. She's kept her word so far. There's an offer of free drinks that's not yet been satisfied but that's not really the problem here." It was looking more likely that a coin toss would by the resolution to the dilemma that faced them. Set having his back helped. Whether empathy or sympathy the understanding of the urgency Vargath was feeling was comforting. "The Chief hired us, she invited us, we're as representative of the town in this matter as you are with this," he says, measuring his words carefully, "We're not rushing to any judgement or agreement here, all I'm saying is that we stick to what we agreed and hear her out without antagonising the supposedly evil witch. Fighting her in the morning is a lot more risky than talking to her at night." He preferred a direct fight. Easier, simpler, but there was the short term and the long term. Though his blood howls for blood there was more to be had if he lived longer.

Set's words were, perhaps, the wrong tack to take. As he spoke of relative risks, Selissa's eyes narrowed at the inherent assumption that she was delaying because she was worried for her own safety.
"One hundred," she snapped, an edge of... annoyance? Anger? in her voice. "One hundred lives. Weight carried on us. Not to be treated carelessly because the halfblood is too afraid to await the dawn."
She looked between the two men, her mouth a hard line. Birel had lapsed into silence after her mistake, and the wood elf can tell that the two human and/or human-adjacent men before her were not going to be convinced by her own clumsy stabs of common.
"Can't know that it isn't a trap to go. Or won't get attacked if she asks too high a price and you say no. Or can't let you say yes. Chief biased from stupid love. Undead," she said again for emphasis, because the 'supposedly evil' statement of Vargath was hopelessly naive at best concerning the resurrected revenant of a elven sorcerer out for revenge, "Cursing the village. Sent that thing outside. Can't be trusted. In offer or deal or cure."
Again, she paused to search for the words, piecing together the sentence. Any anger had once again leaked out of her tone, leaving it as flat and faintly musical as a distant instrument.
"We fail, no stopping it at all."

Once again she looked between the two, and if she saw no acknolegement of her hard-wrung speech, she simply made a tch! sound of irritation.
"Come, then," she said finally. "To give yourself to corpses."

She stalked towards the door and the thing still waiting outside to take them to the monster's lair.
    And the far stars cried, and the planets yearned;
But no man may know, for she'll ne'er return.

    Outside the Oaken Larder

As the group moves outside the tavern, they find Dr. Fixer much in the same place he was before, standing next to the well and looking slightly concerned. "Is all well, friends? Are we ready to head out?" Whatever the response is, he turns on his heels after a few seconds and begins striding west along an empty, desolate road that heads toward what Birel and Selissa know (by rumor) to be Bo'Tel Lake. He refrains from further singing, dancing, or whistling, but his stride is long and it takes some effort to keep up with him. "We're going to have a grand old time at the Lady's estate, my friends! Fine wine, fancy dining, and a library like you wouldn't believe!" His voice is at an alarming volume for this time of night, but Dr. Fixer appears to be no more fatigued than any of you were when you woke up this morning. As he quicksteps forward he occasionally reaches into his jacket pocket and withdraws a silver flask, taking small nips here and there. As the journey stretches into it's first hour he eventually offers the flask to the party, one at a time, that slimy smile still on his face.

On the Road to Lake Bo'Tel

Around the second hour, the forest has grown heavy over the road, blocking out the moonlight. The heat of the day has given over to a beautiful and warm midsummer night, and the Candy Man has begun to hum, another rousing tune full of bounce and energy. This man seems to be immune to normal fatigue. He doesn't slow, he doesn't drop the tune, and he doesn't stop moving. The road grows thinner and thinner as time goes on, and the occasional splash of moonlight on the path serves to illuminate how broken and in bad repair the path has become. Unfortunately, large webs start crisscross the trees and hang over the path, larger than bedsheets. It it Selissa's sharp night eyes that make out the shadow of a humanoid standing in the road, amidst a number of webs. The figure seems to see you, turning and moving in your direction at a steady pace. As it passes through a patch of moonlight, the others spot a humanoid figure dressed in dingy clothes, but only Selissa sees the mushrooms growing out of ragged, matted hair on it's scalp and the fact that one of it's arms is twisted off at an unnatural angle. Seemingly unconcerned, the Candy Man keeps walking forward, unaware of the threat before him.

    Spoiler: OOC

Initiative time. The humanoid is thirty feet away and closing... well, not fast, but steadily. Unless Selissa keeps it to herself you will all know something is off about this traveler. There is a temptation, for just a moment, to leave it all to Dr. Fixer, to stand back and let their escort handle everything. Maintains their own strength, lets them see what the man (if he is indeed a 'man') is capable of, and would let them potentially exhaust some of the witch's force strength if it did combat to fighting.

On the other hand, Vargath really, really wants to hit something. With the stumbling foe in range, Vargath unhooks his axe and rushes forward, barking a command at Fixer "Escort, protect us" as his heavy boot falls pound ground to close the gap. He has to conserve his strength for the witch, just in case, but he can't exactly hold back too much either. No sense conserving strength if it meant they died on the road there.

Selissa had rejected any offer of drink from the 'Candyman' creature with a sharp, single shake of her head, and indeed had stayed as far apart from it as possible. The growing spiderwebs overhead made her eye the shadows for arachnid forms, enough that the crumpled twisted figure ahead closed to thirty feet before she really noticed it. Had it been standing there or walking closer?

"Mushrooms," Selissa spoke even as she stopped and withdrew an arrow from her quiver and Vargath began to charge forward. "Spores, maybe. Beware. "

She loosed an arrow from her magic bow, and it streaked out cleanly to strike the undead monster in the eye - and she paused, waiting to see if that was a kill-shot against something that no longer needed organs to pump blood or draw breath - and then she swept her eyes around the undergrowth about them, to ensure there were not more coming from the sides.

Undead. What tragic, disgusting things, dragged from the cycle of the Green.

Vargath charges into battle a hair behind Selissa's arrow, and both strike true on the shambling humanoid. Selissa's arrow impacts the creature's eye socket, rocking it's head back, while Vargath's axe breaks through ribs like twigs. Yet the creature does not fall. Wind shifts the trees, opening up the branches overhead and allowing moonlight to illuminate the humanoid. It, for to call it he would be sacrilege, was a medium height human wearing peasant's clothes. Now it is a twisted, bulging mound of flesh and fungus, with black broken open pustules all over it's body leaking oily fluid. Spores fill the air- from the axe wound, from the eye socket, and from the creature's gaping mouth, and it lumbers forward, swinging the dead weight of a fist at Vargath, followed by another. The first catches him by surprise across the jaw, and after the initial impact there is a burst of necrotic energy that saps the very life force from the half-orc champion. After the pain of the first blow the rune knight is ready, and the second blow bounces off his shield before it can make contact.

Selissa is wise to search the undergrowth, but her keen senses are mere seconds too late. She spots the shadow quickly enough to dodge to the side as a spider the size of a goat drops down from a web overhanging the road, directly where she stood mere moments before. The beast rears up, pointing it's hind end at Selissa and releasing a blast of webbing at her. She ducks and the stream of sticky lines passes overhead, attaching instead to a tree on the opposite side of the road. The spider also appears to be an amalgamation of flesh and fungus, with several acidic green mushrooms blooming on it's thorax. The venom dripping from it's fangs, however, is the same black sheen as the zombie's pustules.

Dr. Fixer takes just a moment to blink before reaching into his suit jacket and removing a vial filled with amber liquid. He throws a vicious overhand fastball at the spider, glass shattering and liquid coating the arachnid instantly. Nothing happens for a second and a half, but then the visible fumes rising off the creature ignite in intense, white hot flames that roar into life, shining with the intensity of a bon fire, eliciting shrieks of pain from the misbegotten monster. "Never fear, ladies and gents! No challenge is too large for a man of the mystical sciences!" Raising his cane like a bat in both hands, he rushes forward to enter melee with the flaming spider. "I've got this one, you all focus on the undead scourge!"

    Spoiler: OOC
    Show
Vargath takes 9 bludgeoning damage followed by 10 necrotic damage from the zombie's slam attack. The spider misses Selissa with a web attack, standing (on fire) fifteen feet away from her (the drop down was purely for dramatic effect). Now that both foes can be seen clearly I need everyone to roll me a DC 11 Madness check vs. undeath, fungal horror, and disproportionate arachnids. This will be the last combat with the current madness rules (things will be getting harder soon), so don't roll low! It is now Birel and Set's turn, followed by Selissa and Vargath again, so the whole party can go in any order.

At first Birel didn't think Dr. Fixer intended to be a proper escort and she'd have to join Vargath in goading him into doing what his job should be. And... then a giant spider appeared and he attended to it. With a shrug at this she said the shield's command word and it began floating around her. Set squints into the moonlit night, stepping quickly but carefully after Dr. Fixer as he sets a fast pace along the forest-road. Silver spear in one hand, Set accepts the Candyman's flask in the other, sniffing at its contents briefly before taking a nip. "Thanks," Set offers simply, handing it back to the other man.

Set couldn't sense the reason behind the other's ill feelings towards him. What was there to fear from one who traveled the road bursting forth in song? Dr. Fixer didn't dwell in the shadows, nor could he singing at that volume. Strange though he might be, the shadows didn't seem to cling to the Candyman at all. Come to think of it, dark as it was, Set couldn't feel the shadows clinging to himself either. He hadn't really thought of it before but--

    "Escort, protect us."

Set was slow, entirely too caught up in his own thoughts to even register the traveler on the road up ahead. As the Three dive into action, Set fumbles to keep up, tripping over a loose stone as an arrow and starry-ice surge past him. Grunting, he closes the distance and attacks as the terrible looking thing slams the Mighty, it's fists coated in fungus.

The sight. The smell. The abstract concept. The fungus zombie was repellent in every way, every shape, every form. The thought of him becoming like it - combined with the wolfcurse - is too much for Vargath. Too much change. Too many things all at once. He lashes out at the creature wildly. As she got a better look at the undead, she could only find them more and more disquieting, unease roiling in her soul. She did not truly fear death in battle if it was doing the right thing - her soul would return to the green even if her bones mouldered on some forgotten hill or forest. Especially, perhaps.

    But undead-

Shambling, tormented, a threat to everything and all, the thought of ending up like these wretches seeped into her marrow and gnawed at the base of her brain.

She did not want to end up like that. She would prefer the Horror of Yurl had plucked out her lungs and swallowed her beating heart than end up trapped inside her own wretched shambling corpse.

On the Road to Lake Bo'Tel

Birel's ray and Set's strike both hit to full effect on the mold zombie, the ice causing the mushrooms to freeze and shatter while Set's thrust impales the creature. If it were a living being that would be the end of it, but the unnatural energies that fuel this creature are made of sturdier stuff. In his throws of madness Vargath's strike doesn't cause any damage, and Selissa's rushed arrow flies over the zombie's head by a few inches.

The flames have gone out, leaving the spider a charred mess of cracked flesh and singed fungus. In a rage it leaps at Dr. Fixer, fangs exposed, but he nimbly steps aside. He attempts to bring his cane down in a smashing blow, but the spider's carapace absorbs the blow, sending the cane rebounding nearly into it's wielder's face.

The zombie, oddly enough, retreats back a few steps. Set presses this advantage and attempts another stab, but to no avail. Vargath is still a skilled warrior even in this panicked state and manages to land a heavy blow on the creature's shoulder that nearly takes off it's entire arm. The zombie's retreat makes all to much sense a few second later when it opens it's mouth and unleashes a flood of spores and mold over the two warriors. This is especially traumatizing for Vargath in his current mental state, but it is no picnic for set either as the cloud of contagion obscures their vision for a split second and effluvia gets in their eyes and coats their skin.

Spider misses Dr. Dr misses spider. Mold zombie takes a five foot step back, provoking AoO from Set and Vargath. Set misses, Vargath hits. Then the zombie uses it's plague breath attack. Set and Vargath need to make a DC 13 Constitution saving throw. If they fail they take 9 necrotic damage and catch a fun new disease- Iumenta Pox.

Even as his mind is reeling, his body fights back against the spores. His consciousness is flooded by negativity, revulsion, fear and panic, but the years of working out prove that even when mind and body are not as one, he can still stand resilient. Its his body acting now, not his mind, switching over to pure instinct. Even as his feet twitch to run the wolf's heart - in more ways than one - pushes him forward. He's not looking properly, unable to lock his eyes on the foe. If he does, he'll pull back, more than he already is doing. Instead he shuts his eyes entirely, choosing utter darkness over filling his sight with that. The squelching sounds of rotten flesh and the pungent stench are all he needs though. He steps forward, swinging his axe down in an enormous vertical strike. The blade's edge, gleaming in the moonlight, cuts a full crescent down. If it still stands he carries the momentum through turning the crescent into a full circle as he carries momentum in an enormous 360' arc and then pulls it back down against the zombie, desperate to see it dead.

Move: Close distance with the zombo

Pre-emptive Reaction: Invoke: Skye, same as last turn.

Zombo technically gets Advantage to hit Vargath next turn because he's choosing to shut his eyes instead of looking at the enemy.

His mind blank with the ever-shifting landscape of battle, Set feels his spear find purchase in the soggy, molding flesh of the zombie. Jaw clenched, Set rips his spear free and tries to press the attack, but the thing was ready for him now.

Set's eyes widen as the zombie wards away his attack and steps back to deliver a stream of spores. He instinctually squeezes his eyes shut, availing himself of what little protection he can from the creature's atypical assault.

Thankfully, the shemagh that was meant to filter out the sand that so often plagued his people seemed to keep out the worst of the spores as well. Set reopens his eyes to find the Mighty's axe slashing through the night sky to carve into the thing. Half-blinded by the cloud, Set lashes out quickly and efficiently, feeling no hint of the Mighty's dread and instead taking his inspiration from the half-orc's continued show of strength.
