Default Raam: The City of Anarchy IC

    Spoiler: OOC Link
    Show

Drifts of sand from the dunes beyond are carried into the Ghost City, building up against the northfacing walls of buildings. A steady southward wind that hasn't let up all day. Empty streets that seem forgotten make the slums suit their name. On any other day the outcastes would be scrounging for what food and water they can get, but today the smell of trouble comes on the wind.

The Unreliable Kank. An unimpressive name worn by an unimpressive bunkhouse. The sandstone building is a squat, rectangular lump growing out of the dusty ground. The door, made of thin, cheap wood sports a few ragged holes and scarcely boasts a lock. With a door a halfling could kick down, why bother?

Faldar and his retainers have come to this place, a bunkhouse loosely called an inn by some. Often the first stop of mercenaries and vagabonds passing into the city. Few such individuals find their way out. According to House Lufi's informants on the city's fringes, a new group of hopeful brigands has arrived and is looking for opportunity. Opportunity the noble houses could give. More importantly, House Lufi wishes to scoop them up before Vespos gets its claws into them. All the power and personnel in the hands of one part of an alliance seldom lends power to the voices of the rest.

With their wagon and its dutiful kank trundling along behind them, they arrive outside the withered wooden door.

The selfsame band of elven brigands finds themselves lounging around the sparsely furnished bunkhouse. The main room features a few sandstone benches, a single rocking chair, and two rows of four creaky cots with ratty blankets for mattresses. It is run by Kev, a human man with short, dark, curly hair. He's seated on one of the benches, leaning back against the wall and contemplating a broom with which he might sweep up some of the sand that's blown in under the door, if he could be so bothered.

Besides Zantos and his comrades, and of course good Kev, there are only two other people in the bunkhouse. Both are, like Kev, permanent residents of the squalid little piece of respite from the sun.

There's Denver, a human butcher, works out of the kitchen attached to the building. His meals are not complimentary, except perhaps to Kev in return for the space. He operates out of the back of the bunkhouse, where on a less windy day he would be peddling salted meat and dried jerkies.

Then there's Whilma, an old elf. A sad sight to behold, her legs misshapen and crippled by old wounds long since healed, but never healed well. Unable to run with the wind any longer, she sits in her rickety rocking chair carving things from wood that others bring her to work for them. Walking sticks, clubs, arrows, spears. Right now she whittles away at what may be the head of a wooden spear, or a smaller wooden shiv.

Not far from the bunkhouse, three mysterious figures lead their newest batch of converts back towards the city proper. A group of outcastes, those the city cast aside and refused to accept. The ideal candidates to submit to the promises of a new order, an order in which they can have the place they never did before. Three humans, unremarkable and carrying little in the way of protection, trail behind Lazaar and his subordinates. Two men and a woman.

All that remains is to escort the converts back to the territory of the faithful, in the northwestern part of Raam. It is not a distant destination from the Ghost City. Their route takes them past the local bunkhouse, where new gloryseekers pass through to meet their fate in the City of Anarchy.

Like always, Zantos tries to lighten the mood in the dreary room. He is animatedly telling Whilma the story of how they found Jiro dying in the desert, using small illusions to illustrate his points for dramatic effect. He includes a few facts that are embarrassing for Jiro but some that make him out to be capable and powerful. The old woman even cracks a small smile at a few of his funnier moments.

"...and then, Jiro and Qaba rush in, killing my captor and freeing me from the torture."

Jiro is sitting on a chair, reading his book while only half listening to his boss. he's heard this story a dozen times before. He tolerates the embarrassing parts of the story, partly because they are true. He had no business running through the desert on his own back then. But mostly because he knows how much Zantos respects him now.

"Nice job Zantos. Much better use of the music to set the mood this time."

Qaba barely listens to the story, only nodding in agreement when Zantos calls him out specifically. He had already asked Kev about any potential work, but was having trouble with the answer, "Just stay here and work will find you." He thinks that's just Kev trying to get a few more nights rent out of them. He's wondering if they should just get some supplies and go back to the desert. But Zantos wants to explore the city and see if we can make something more of ourselves.

"You are a good sport, Jiro. I'm not sure I'd put up with him like that."

Slowly, Faldar and his crew made there way through the Ghostcity. Faldar clearly leads the group, wearing nicely decorated leather armor and nice sylk pants. In contrast Bontar wears only a loincloth and some leather straps which tie his belongings to his back. The most obvious part of his attire is his heavy stone maul which he rests on his muscled shoulders. Ptekme the tri-khreen follows two steps behind them, next to the kank.

"You know Bontar, everytime I come here, it amazes me that there are actually people living here. I can't imagine how desperate they must be to stay."

Bontar shrugs. Clearly he doesn't think much of it.

"Hmmpf, I've seen worse. Although not by much. Better keep your eyes open. Desperate people find desperate ways to make a living." With that he swings his maul around, before resting it back on his shoulder.

When they reach the bunkhouse, Faldar holds.

"Halt, this is where the elf mercs should be staying. Let's hope they are still here. We're not the only one currently looking to recruit.
Ptekme, you wait outside. Bontar, let's go inside. Hopefully they are in better shape then the last bunch. We need some good men."

With those words he walks to the door.

The older woman sits in her rocking chair, working on her whittling while Zantos tells his story. A small smile creeps onto her face hearing their banter and the stories of their adventures. "How daring they must have been coming to the rescue." Her ears twitch and her head lifts up, carving knife stopping. Moments later the ragged door creaks open, revealing a well-dressed man who looks very out of place in such a run-down quarter, accompanied by a more local-looking dwarven thug.

Kev watches more sand roll in through the open door and apathetically lays the broom up against the wall beside him. Faldar recognizes the House's informant from his description. "Welcome to the Unreliable Kank," the tired-sounding man announces with all the enthusiasm of the titular lazy bug. "Looks like work's here," he says to the group of elves.

Faldar smiles as het enters the room, recognizing the man as was described to him. "Aah, you must be Kev. Quite a fine .... lowkey place you got here." Faldar says, failing to come up with any real compliment on the establishment. His clothes look nice, if a bit dusty. And he doesn't have any arms visible on him, except for a simple dagger in his waste band. His posture shows an open and friendly character. Bontar on the other hand looks a lot more serious. He puts his maul on the ground and rests his hands on the upright handle, while scanning the man and the elves for any danger. He seems poised to spring into action, if needed.

Realising that Kev is probably not so much interested in small talk, Faldar turns to the elves and gives them a friendly nod.
"So, one of you must be Zantos, I assume? My name is Faldar, a member of the Lufi family of which you may have heard. And I come here representing my family. I heard you were in town, and was hoping that you were looking for work?"

Zantos is surprised that someone would ask for him by name. While he calls himself a pirate, he's just a desert bandit. They have hit up a few merchant caravans from Raam recently so maybe his reputation precedes him. Maybe that's not a good thing here. Anyway, it's showtime.

"I am Zantos, Pirate of the Desert!" he says cheerfully before waving his hand dramatically towards his friends, "and these are my esteemed associates, Qaba and Jiro. We are indeed looking for work, but what does the Lufi family want with a trio of elves? What kind of work do you have for us?"

"Pleasure to meet you Mr. Faldar. My name is Jiro. I am one of Zantos' crew. Over there is Qaba, the other member of the crew."

Qaba nods quietly when his name is mentioned, "Good afternoon" he says curtly before returning to checking his equipment. Like always, he lets Zantos do the talking, but he quietly studies the newcomers to make sure his boss doesn't get them involved in something he shouldn't.

Kev weakly sighs out an "Eh," at Faldar's attempt at a compliment. "Nobody cares to rob a dump. And that's fine by me." Getting up to allow his clients to talk business, he picks up his broom and drags it behind him into another room to pretend to do some sweeping.

Sitting in her chair, the elderly elf points out what may or may not be obvious, "I'm not with them." She says it with a hint of gallows humor, looking down at her crooked old legs. Finishing her work on the wooden shiv, she tests the point with a finger. It doesn't quite draw blood, so she takes out a stone file and starts sharpening the tip.

Bontar just nods politely to each of the elves as they introduce themselves. He seems to relax a little, shown by shifting his attention from the group to studying the bunkhouse and the elven woman working on a shiv.

Faldar eyes up the group, seemingly pleased with what he sees.

"Ah pleasure to meet you, Zantos. And of course you as well, Jiro and Qaba. My friend's name here is Bontar, he is my personal bodyguard."

After which he makes quick eye contact with Bontar. But seeying no immediate concerns on his face he continues.

"Zantos the pirate. I have not heard that title before. Or spoken so proudly, for that matter. If you are looking to make a name in this city, you've come at the right time. Plenty of opportunity with the current situation."

"Anyway, the current situation in Raam means that my family is .... very busy, while at the same time it has become a lot less safe. So we are looking for people who can handle themselves and can be trusted. At least when they are on our payroll. Now you look like you can handle yourselves. So if your trust doesn't make us go bankrupt, I'll gladly have ya. We have a wagon outside to bring your stuff."

Zantos knows that negotiating a price right here would be petty. He trusts that this noble will pay well and if he doesn't, then his crew is no worse off than they were 10 minutes ago. As always he looks to Qaba before accepting an offer. Seeing his friend give a subtle nod, Zantos smiles again.

"We accept your offer. We will come with you into the city and help defend your family." He then turns to the old elf, kissing her hand like he is wooing a princess and says goodbye, "Mistress Whilma, it has been a pleasure talking with you today. I hope we meet again in the future."

The three messengers maneuvered under the crimson sun with their native indifference to the heat. They made little concessions for the scaleless Watchers in tow. “Only the strong would stand in the Day of Light,” as Qoheleth quoted often from the Wisdom of the prophets.

The Vicar of Dust contrasted from the other two dray in their finery. Where Greven and Lazaar’s voluminous robes bore noble colors and bolts of silk to veil their heads, the priest wore silt-crusted scales flayed from the erdlu over his wind-worn brown robes. He also possessed a shield of lacquered wood with the sign of the Grey.

Lazaar whispered to Greven, ”A pack of sellswords appears to be emerging from the bunkhouse. Their assets would enrich ours.”

Greven answered in his shared-mind speech, ”I will entreat them, Sorcerer.”

Greven advanced with Qoheleth, who instinctively kept stride with the other. The lithe, shrouded messenger proclaimed, ”Well met, travelers! The Day smiles upon us. Your steps seem to bear you on a shared journey.”

While exiting the building Faldar looks around, searching for Ptekme. He startled a bit when the tri-khreen stood up only several feet away. The tri-khreen had found a little bit of shade and was keeping an eye on the surroundings from there. It still amazed Faldar each time how easy the tri-khreen could fade away if he wanted to. But with Ptekme still outside and the Kank still waiting, no problems seem to be present.

While loading the wagon, a small group approached, which greets them. Neither Bontar or Ptekme seem alarmed as the three leading the group seem are well dressed. Definitely not the kind of trouble they'd expect to find in these parts.

"Thank you, it's good to meet you as well. As we are indeed returning to some more civilized parts, you're welcome to join us. We've got room for 1 or 2 on the wagon if needed. May I know your names?"

Qoheleth studied the assembled mercenaries. The dunestriders were easiest to discern; the elves and his profession crossed each others paths like the currents in the Sea. The others mingled their kinds like a storm, as different as the citizens of Raam. He paused his search on the thri-kreen. He mused inwardly, "These are like dust on the wind: They move to speak, but the uninitiated do not discern its message."

Whilma chuckles lightly to herself as Zantos kisses her hand so formally. Thank you for the stories, young one. I could almost feel the wind again... or that could just be the draft. She pats him on the hand and nods as he leaves. "May the wind be always at your back."

Despite his apathetic aura, Kev swiftly catches the pouch Bontar passes his way. He winks at the dwarf as he leaves to join his boss' entourage outside.

The three citizens follow closely behind the robed figures, often checking corners and alleys as they advance. When they're pointed out to the others coming out of the bunkhouse, they bow their heads. Then one of them looks up.

From the alleyways and eclectic streets of the Ghost City creep some rough-looking types. Clad in loosely bound leathers and bits of yellow cloth, they proudly display the colors of the Korno's Killers. Most of them carry little more than stones in their hands, or bones wielded as clubs.

At the center of their formation is a frightening looking human man who stands out from the rest. Clad in a suit of scale carved from bone, he carries a fearsome bone carrikal resting on one shoulder. The left half of his face is covered in old burns, which from time to time seem to flicker with new sparks like the dying coals of a bonfire.

"Well looky-loo what we have here boys," the scarred gladiator waves his carrikal at the assembled groups in front of them. "Here we go trackin' some fancy moneybags and he leads us to who, but some freaky-preachers tryin' to scam up the Ghostly freefolk." He points at the citizens following the Preachers. "Come now, guys and lady. Y'don't want any o' what they're preaching, not really. Whadda we say to bootlickers boys?" Holding up a hand, he signals the other gangers who all chant back.

"No gods!" they announce, beating their clubs and stones against things to make a loud clanging racket. "No kings!"

The woman 'Watcher' reaches for a bone shiv and motions the others back. "I've heard what these guys do," she tells them. "They pull you in with promises of freedom but it's all just slavework."

As the streets suddenly fill up with seemingly hostile men, Faldar tells the elves. "Seems I will need your services right away. These guys are exactly the sort of problem that has been plaguing the city lately. They call themselves Korno's killers. Be careful though, some of them may have been gladiators."

    No gods...

    No kings...

As the crowd chants, Faldar moves over to the newcomers, while he addresses their leader. Faldar spreads his hands to encompass the whole group. After which he puts his hands in his pockets to grab a component. "You've collected quite the party there, friend of Korno. And I know your kind has a general hatred for those of us with power. I suggest though, that you let us leave and wait in ambush for those of House Urvus. They should be here in 2 hours and I'm sure you prefer their kind of goods over ours."

Faldar's words resonate with a certain gravitas, a weight behind them that makes the leader of the gangers scratch his chin with his free hand. Then his clouded eyes narrow and grow sharper once again. The white, blinded eye on the burnt side of his face glows with blue flames that flicker and lick across the side of his head. "I was just gonna kill ye, twinkletoes. After that mind trick, I'm thinkin' you'll look mighty good roasting alive on a spit." As he speaks his friendly and even silly tone shifts into a vicious hiss.

Taking his hostile words as a signal, the ragtag band of rabble starts to lift up their weapons and advance. Their leader hangs back, taking stock of how the groups react before he acts.

Zantos knows two things. First, the gang seems more concerned with the nobles and the priests than with lowly elves, so his crew could likely just move around the corner, walk away and find safer employment. Second, if the noble and the prophet join the fray, we at least have about even numbers, but Zantos was never concerned with exact math. He chooses the second option thinking it will be more interesting and that he might be able to make a good impression on his new employer. He shakes off Qaba's hand on his shoulder and moves up in front of Greven and Bontar, taunting the leader as he approaches, and drawing his scimitar when he gets close. A brief glow covers his skin before disappearing.

After frowning for a second on the weird suggestion coming from his master, Bontar focuses back on the group before him as the burned man speaks up again. His fist grip his heavy maul tightly as the man first threatens Faldar and then insults him. Rage boils up inside him as he moves towards the nearest enemy, not caring to meet a member of his own race on the battlefield. "Wraaaaghh!!" He raises his maul high, before bringing it down on the dwarf.

Ptekme has seen this before. Bontar going into a rage is always a sight to behold. It always makes Ptekme wonder why Bontar is a bodyguard, while in battle he tends to forget about Faldar when angered. Ptekme recognises the danger and moves up a bit and get's ready to dodge incoming blows.

At the same time, Faldar grins a bit at Bontar's anger, telling himself that Bontar is more then just a deterrent. He keeps an eye on him, while throwing an psionic blast in the direction of the burned man.

Without hesitation, Bontar charges forwards and brings his maul down upon the opposing dwarf. His crude chitin armor crunches under the weight of the stone hammer and he's sent sprawling onto the ground with a gasp of air.

The ground beneath the cluster of brigands darkens and greys into a sickly ash. Lashes of webbing launch up from beneath their feet, grabbing onto their arms and faces. The dwarf and one of the humans twist out of the webbing before it can catch, while the other two are caught and held fast.
At a word and a wave of the hand from Greven, the dwarf falls over into the webs, which cradle him as he sleeps.

The human one who avoided the webbing rushes out, rushing past the civilians and swinging his club at the thri-kreen. Ptekme feels the blunt instrument slam into his side and everyone can hear a crack. A second one rushes Zantos as he steps forward, but swings short and is easily sidestepped.

One of the humans trapped in the web manages to wriggle out and moves to help his friend who is still stuck. "They're wizards! Bloody noble leeches!"

An arrow whistles through the air and slices through the air next to the burnt ganger's head, flicking off a bead of sweat. A second later, a warbling blast of psionic energy impacts him in the chest and nearly knocks him off his feet. "By the Flame, we need more men!"

Before he can call off the attack properly, the mul charges at Bontar with his two clubs. He shouts something in Raamite. Two swings of his weapons go wide as Bontar sweeps them aside.

    Spoiler: Raamite

The sight of his men falling apart so quickly, and the impact of the blast in his chest, leaves 'Crispy' with a face contorted in rage. "You will rue this day!" With those words, he waves his hand at his feet and they ignite with flames. Turning, he skates across the barren ground as if it were slick obsidian glass, speeding away, sliding around the corner of a building and out of sight.

One of the new Watchers is already long gone, having run off when the fighting broke out. He would not have lasted anyways. The woman takes her shiv and rushes the human trying to fish his friend out of the net, swinging at him. He catches her arm with his own and shoves it away. Bontar's hammer swings upwards, whipping past the mul in front of him, who leans back. The stone of the maul scrapes the front of his nose, shaving off some skin. Three black missiles launch from behind the group and impact some of their foes, knocking them off balance. The ground around the unconscious dwarf withers and blackens as he struggles to breath.

The gangers stubbornly continue fighting for a moment, one taking a swing at Zantos and missing for the second time. The other tries to finish off the Kreen, but Ptemke sees the attack coming this time and is able to get out of the way.

"Follow me, you idiots!" Crispy's voice echoes from the direction he ran. The remaining Killers look back after him and start to try and pull back, with the exception of the raging mul who continues to recklessly go after Bontar.

"Let's go!" one of the two poorly equipped humans grabs his friend and tugs him from the web as they both make a run for it. The Watcher girl takes a stab at the back of the one taking up the rear, tearing his shirt, but drawing no blood. He stumbles forwards and nearly falls, struggling to keep up with his buddy.

As the gang tries to break off, two arrows fly. One sails straight past the melee, while the other impacts the ganger fighting Zantos directly in his back. The man falls to his knees and gasps as a jolt of shock runs through his body, falling forward and landing face first into the dirt. His legs fly up in the air, sending bits of oily black liquid flicking into the air.

Faldar watches in amazement as magic is used in abundance by the robed men. It distracts Ptekme is slow to react to the dangerous ganger next him and gets hit as a result. Het lets out some thri-kreen curse. "TJIKJIK CLA!!"

Then Faldar snaps back to what is happening and blasts the ganger that hit Ptekme. After which he moves next to him to distract him, while healing Ptekme's wounds a little. "You think you're tougher than your boss? .. Really?"

Ptekme nods at his boss coming to his rescue. And uses Faldar's diversion to strike at an opening left by the ganger.

Qoheleth watched his marked prey fall and then barked tersely, "Stand opposite the 'kreen to strengthen each other."

He then stretched his hand toward the human rabble fleeing, cursing his steps, "The land loathes the touch of your feet. The Grey claim you!"

Faldar arrives at Ptemke's side, patching up the worst of his wounds. The cracks in his shell mend together, knitting like cloth. The blast of psionic force flies past the man as he sidesteps Ptemke's claw swipe. He doesn't expect the follow-up however, and the second claw rakes across his chest leaving a bright red mark that leaks down. "****! The claws- the claws aren't poisonous right, just the teeth?"

While the man panicks, the lady Watcher comes back, circling around the eerie ashen ground and tosses her friend the bone shank she had. "Catch!" He snatches the weapon out of the air and drives it into the ganger's back. Pressing all his weight down on the larger man, he topples him to the ground, pulling out his weapon and leaving the foe to bleed.

No one answers the man, too busy with their own flight from danger. All save for the mul, who roars in defiance and raises both clubs, bringing them down upon Bontar. He's just able to shield his head from the blow, but the two clubs drive his arm into his face, leaving him with a bloodied nose and two rapidly darkening bruises across the forearm.

    Spoiler: Raamite

"You will break first!" the mul roars.

Zantos takes advantage of the mul's relentless focus on Bontar, and slashes across the mul's side with his scimitar. The driven warrior doesn't even seem to register the pain, spinning in Zantos' direction and snarling like a wild beast through bloody teeth. The man at Zantos' feet gasps and jolts to a sitting position, quickly trying to back away, but losing his grip.

The human struggling away, still trailing webbing, starts to leave blackened footprints in his wake, not even noticing in his hurry to get away.

Faldar attempts to blast Human Ganger, but misses.
    Faldar heals Ptemke for 3.
Ptemke attacks Human Ganger, but also misses.
Ptemke attacks a second time. Unless I'm mistaken, I don't think the offhand attack has a lower hit modifier, just damage. So that would be a 14 and a hit for 2 damage. Since it's the only attack that hit, I'll also add his sneak attack damage of 3. The Ganger is left Bloodied.

Mul Rabble attacks Bontar twice, hitting for 10 and 8 damage. These are both halved, leaving only 9 damage, and Bontar Bloodied instead of KO'd.

Zantos strikes the Mul Rabble for 3 damage after resistance. He is now Bloodied.

Civilian tosses Civilian her bone shiv.
Civilian stabs Human Ganger for 5 damage, knocking him out.

Qoheleth curses the fleeing Human Rabble and brings the marked Human Ganger back in at 5 health and Prone.

It is now Bontar and Lazaar's turns, and the start of a new round.

"AAAAAGH!!" Bontar screams as he gets hit, although it is unclear whether from pain or from anger, probably both. He swings his maul again, hoping to take out the mul with his maul. He does so by continueing his last upswing into a full loop and redirecting it into a diagonal upswing.

Faldars hears the dwarf and quickly glances over to see what is happening. He focusses on him for a split second, healing him, before he and Ptekme try and finish off the dwarf in the web. Faldar makes several steps before blasting him, after which Ptekme quickly runs over and unleashes a flurry of his claws.
