Samon's club proves to be ineffective at fending off the vangal, which snaps its teeth and takes a bite into his leg. With a grunt, he kicks it off and staggers. Lazaar's fire prevents the one Ptemke brought down from getting itself back on its feet. Bontar moves in and delivers a wallop to the beast, striking right where its wounds just finished healing. Before it can try anything again, Greven crushes its simple mind and it passes out from the strain. With the last of its dying will, one of the thorns weakly launching from its back finds its path, impaling Greven yet again and adding to the pincushion scars he will surely have later.

Down the street, the mother vangal grabs one of her hatchlings carefully in her jaws and carries it away to seek safety. The injured hatchlings are starting to twitch and try to get back up, but without their parents to defend them they will surely be easy pickings.

All active threats have been removed, and the hatchlings are barely able to fight back. The rest may be finished off at the party's leisure, and any attempts to pursue the mother will be done outside of full initiative.

The two remaining hatchlings whine and cower, fleeing back into the house from whence they appeared. Investigating the inside, it smells of unwashed wild beasts. There are remnants of shed skins, bits of cloth from unfortunate Raamites used to make nests, and the gnawed bones of perhaps those same victims. The hatchlings have buried themselves within the nest, where two more unhatched eggs lie nestled. Their regeneration factor seems just as potent as the adults, but their quills are soft and not yet hardened.

When the dust settles from all the fighting going on, Faldars is sitting on one knee. Breathing heavily he gets out a waterskin and takes a long drink before slowly getting back up. He wipes his face clean, smearing some of the dusty sweat into his eyebrows. Without uttering a word he helps organise the kank and the carru, before addressing Greven. "We will gladly take you up on that offer, Greven. I think we all need some rest." Ptekme soon joins him, waiting to support Faldar if he gets to exhausted.

Bontar on the other hand is doing quite well. After checking his equipment he calls out to Zantos. "If you need someone to bump those beasties little heads, just call me. I think the suckers can take it." After which he joins Faldar.

Rasha washes and bandages Samon's leg where he was bitten, while Qaba and Qoh go to try and coax the hatchlings. The two of them have lashed the once-escaped prisoner to the thorny back of the kank, where he will painfully jab himself with any struggling once he wakes up. The other two have, true to their word, made no attempt to run for it during the fight.

Approaching the vangal nest, Qaba tries to get the hatchlings to come out. But the little ones only back away, bristling their underdeveloped quills and making distressed, high-pitched growling noises.

With his psionic talents, Greven is able to sooth one of the two hatchlings into a false sense of security. Enthralled, it follows his coaxing into the bag. As soon as he releases his hold to attempt to sway the other, however, the effects fade and the creature attempts to flee the bag, forcing him to close it. The animal flails around inside, in a panic, while the one outside is now swayed by his influence. The group is able to capture it in a second bag, acquiring both of the little beasts.

Their conflict with the beasts resolved, the group is led by the Prophets in the direction of their encampment, nearby, to rest and recover. It has been a long and trying day, and Faldar is struggling now to keep pace with the rest of the hardened warriors and desert races.

Ahead is a cluster of buildings surrounded by a fence and palisade. Much of the material for it seems to have been scavenged from the old Ghost City fence. More Prophets, clad ubiquitously in the heavy shrouding robes their group is known for, go about their business. Alongside them are others, Raamites recruited into their following, the Watchers. Clad in lighter, more breathable robes, and masks, they seem to be primarily human, with the occasional half-elf. One of the guards near the encampment entrance is accompanied by a small desert lizard.

Tents of differing sizes dot the encampment. Just past some buildings to the group's left, in what was once an alley alcove, is a local water well. One of the Prophets is drawing some water using a heavy, old stone bucket. Past the tents are a pair of pens with large beasts in them, resembling a cross between a kank and a crab, many-legged creatures with fearsome pincers and mandibles.

    Spoiler: Faldar

Though his eyes may be deceiving him in the mystifying heat, he thinks he sees a familiar face among the crowd. A human woman with brown hair, shorter than he remembers it, is speaking to a group of what must be new Watchers and handing them their masks. Even clad in clothes much different from her noble dress, and with shorter hair, he could swear she looks like Ravi.

    Spoiler: The Prophets Knowledge
    Show
There are a few notable personages that the Prophets know of in the encampment.

The Kai Duron, one of Dregoth's Templar Commanders, typically remains in the tunnels below the encampment organizing the night raiders, who all live underground beyond the eyes of the surface dwellers. He technically outranks Lazaar, the Mar Ravoni, who is in charge of recruitment and proselytization. Typically, however, he leaves the daylight business of management and diplomacy to his Speaker, Algog the Bright, as well as to the Mar Ravoni.

Algog the Bright is the Kai Duron's assistant and Speaker, much as Greven serves this role to Lazaar. It is typically he who sees to the daily management of the encampment, such as distributing food and water and constructing defenses, while the Kai Duron and Mar Ravoni are engaged with their own tasks.

Psekothey is one of the more senior Vicars present at the encampment. She is a Vicar of Rain, and often uses her magic to provide extra water for the Prophets, as well as to cleanse any rotten or inedible food they find while scavenging among the ruins. Like the other Vicars, she is also one of the encampment's medics.

Vicars in service to Dregoth typically draw on the power of the Paraelements, whose Lords interfere less with personal agendas and grudges than do the Elemental Lords. The most common are those of Dust and Rain.

The Shepard is the highest ranking and most trusted Watcher, responsible for welcoming new Watchers and familiarizing them with the path.

When arriving at the camp, Faldar sighs in relief. "I think we're safe for now." he says. Looking around though, it occurs to him that these are indeed a very different people then what he is used to. He takes action on that insight and adresses the others. "Bontar, Ptekme, and you too Zantos. I'd like you to stick close. I have no former experience with this group and even though Greven and his men seem amiable to us at least, that doesn't mean that their organisation is." Next Faldar moves over to Greven, followed closely by Bontar. "Thank you for allowing us to make use of your campsite to rest. My earlier offer still stands of course, and I'd love to entertain you for a nice evening at my house, but now is more a time for rest and recuperation. You never told me what your standing is with the prophets. Perhaps you could tell us a bit more over dinner? But all friendly exchanges aside, where can we put down and rest? Mind you, we didn't bring any camping gear or food as we didn't expect to be out for more then a day." Bontar interjects. "This many attacks on one day isn't normal. Our presents used to keep trouble away. The city is bursting with problems." he says as he shakes his head in disgust.

As they speculate a bit on the reason for the attacks and the trouble, Faldar suddenly spots a girl. A girl who he knows. If it's her of course. He stares for several seconds before stepping out of the conversation and calling her as he walks up to her. "RAVI! Ravi!, is it really you? What are you doing here, in this camp. ... I ... I ... I thought you were dead..."

Lazaar nods respectfully to Faldar. He looked over the activities of the camp and the coming of other Watchers. He mind-whispered to Greven. "Thank the nobleman for his proposed hospitality. Qoheleth will arrange their accommodations. We must speak with Agog concerning the Killers."

As he moved through the camp, Watchers and vicars deferred to his presence, saying, "The Day break before you, Mar Ravoni."

Greven listened to the Mar Ravoni and replied, ”It shall be as you say, Mar Ravoni.”

He addressed Faldar and the others, "The Mar Ravoni welcomes you to our refuge from the anarchy of the City. He thanks you greatly, nobleman Faldar, for your offer, and we shall gladly join you at your abode on the morrow.

"The Vicar of Dust will guide you to where you may rest for the evening. He will introduce you to Shephard, who can answer any and all questions concerning conduct within the brotherhood of the Prophets. We have sufficient water and rations for our honored guests. Mar Ravoni will return to converse with you shortly. He has matters to conclude with the other leaders before we may rejoin you."

As the Mar Ravoni walks forwards, the guards bow deferentially and greet him. They barely seem to question the presence of others alongside their returning party. One of them tenses up as Faldar bolts forwards, but eases her stance when it becomes clear he has seen someone he recognizes.

Rasha and Samon fall into step behind the others, Samon limping slightly on his bitten leg. Rasha stops to inform one of the guards, "We have prisoners. Where should they be taken?"

The Prophets' guard looks to Greven for context and guidance and inquires, "Speaker?"

After the issue is dealt with and the prisoners handed off to be taken, the two Watchers accompany Qoheleth and the others to meet with the Shepard. Faldar is several steps ahead of them.

When the nobleman appears, Ravi looks over in astonishment, and then her face lights up. "One moment, my friends. It appears we have guests," she informs the new Watchers, handing the last of them his mask and then stepping past to meet Faldar. "Faldar! I hoped you remained well." She takes his hands in her own. "I was nearly dead, very nearly. But that is a story for later. You are friends of the Mar Ravoni?" she asks, watching as Lazaar passes by deeper into the camp.

Rasha and Samon approach together. As ever, Rasha takes the lead, bowing to the Shepard. Samon gets jabbed with an elbow and follows suit. "We have come to join your number," she explains, trying to sound formal. "I am Rasha, and this is Samon, my companion."

"An honor," he says, awkwardly. He turns a bit to hide his burn marks.

"Welcome, to the both of you. I will be happy to show you the Path," Ravi answers them.

A pair of Prophets, one of them a Vicar with a Silt totem, lead the elves to one of the nearby houses that have been repurposed as part of the encampment. The one not wearing a totem bows to them and speaks in a lisping accent. "We are pleassed to welcome you. This housse is ussed to sshelter thosse who sseek ssuccor from the uncssertainty of the outsside."

It is a humble affair, with cots and blankets laid out on the floor and a currently empty wash basin in the corner. The cots at least look more comfortable than the ones the bunkhouse back in the Ghost City had afforded. The Vicar walks over to one of the cots and kneels down, unfurling a first aid kit. "Come," he says simply, motioning for the first to approach who needs healing.

Advancing through the camp, greeted with bows and practiced, ceremonial words of greeting, Lazaar makes his way to the bank of the encampment. The camp is near to the northwestern wall, and it looms beyond their own makeshift fortifications. But of course the true extent of their operation stretches out below. The two guards in front of the tent, one of them a Vicar of Magma, part the cloth flaps for him to pass through.

Inside, Algog is standing in bright white robes stained around the hems with the dust of the city's streets, and wearing a ceramic mask that hides his facial features. He is standing over a table where a map of the city is sprawled out, marked with differently colored pins. Across from him is one of the guards, giving a routine report of security in the area. - a pack of vangals has moved into the district. We are preparing an extermination team..." he drifts off his thought to bow and greet the Mar Ravoni. The Day break before you, Mar Ravoni.

Algog the Bright turns with a swish of his long sleeves and bows with a flourish, following the guard's greeting with one of his own. "Gladly our Paths meet, Mar Ravoni. You walk it with a purpose...?" he notes the intent in Lazaar's stride and awaits his superior's intent.

Lazaar waited for Greven to answer the guards and Agog. Then he addressed the Kai Duron's Speaker, for a Speaker is worthy to hear as well as to speak. "I do come with purpose, Voice of Kai Duron. The silt shifts, as the Vicar of Dust would say. We encountered the recruiters of Krono's Killers near the north gate."

He waited for Greven to point the location, then proceeded. "We also met an heir of Lufi with his elven mercenaries, who joined us by chance and bolstered our purge of Krono's men. Krono's recruiters grow overbold in the Ghost City, but now they may learn humility."

"This outpost we left in dust and ruin, but it will serve well whoever reclaims it." The Mar Ravoni left the implied tasking for Agog to read.

"I will head into the noble district with the nobleman tomorrow. While I cultivate the relationship with the nobleman and the elves, the prisoners are yours to question. Krono's gangers remain steadfast to his cause, a proud, but vain, sentiment. The rabble may yet bend and become watchers if treated well."

He looked at the arena and commented, "This may be the way of sifting for the Killers. The fanatics will die around their master, and the rabble learn serve under us of a necessity. Perhaps the Kai Duron would remind them to hide within their walls in which they vainly trust."

Greven listened to Lazaar's summation and appraisal, adding, ”Your reports on vangals are correct. We slew a pack, which yielded two whelps for training. Qoheleth has handed them over to the Shepherdess.”

He conjured a false stone statue of the one would-be Watcher who fled, "We added a few ghosts to the Watchers, but one showed his craven heart in the face of the Killers. The guards should capture him if he begs at the gate. If they bury him to his neck in sand turned to glass, then everyone can see the folly of fleeing the Prophets and hear what lies in such fool's hearts.

The guard who had been discussing with the Speaker files out, allowing Lazaar to speak freely with one allowed to hear. Through the explanations, Algog listens carefully, face inscrutable behind his mask.

"If the Killers are ramping up recruitment," with his hands behind his back, the Speaker paces around the table, examining the map, "They are either becoming low in number, or they are planning something big." Raising a gloved hand, he twirls his finger over the map thoughtfully, as though seeking some inspiration as to what their plan might be. Eventually he curls it back into his fist and clasps his hands behind himself again. "I will endeavor to learn from the prisoners what he might be planning. With hunger and thirst to ply the mind, even the strongest of mental walls will falter."

Bowing again to Lazaar, and with a nod of his head to Greven, he concludes, "I will see your words carried at once to the Kai Duron, Mar Ravoni. Do you have further need of me?"

The elves settle into the accommodations they have been given, and question the Prophets tending to them. The robed preacher answer Zantos sadly, "Thiss cssity iss not home. I long for the Day to come, for order to return. Yet," he spreads his hands in a soft shrug, "We all do asss we musst for a better tomorrow." At the question of trouble, he simply shakes his head. "It iss not my placsse to sspeak of our foess..."

He answers one of Qaba's questions as well, "All have been insstructed to conssult with Pssekothey, Vicar of Rain, before drawing from the well. Water ssuppliess musst be consserved. Worry not for offending uss. We are well aware that you know little of our wayss."

Working on suturing and bandaging Jiro's wounds, the Vicar is mostly quiet. At the elf's questions he gives short, simple answers, seeming still uncomfortable with the trade language. "All follow one firsst. Lord assk little. Not sso conflicted, much."

When Ravi takes Faldars hands he stares for a moment, overcome by the heavy combinations of feelings swirling inside him. The exhaustion, the realization that Ravi is alive, the fact that she is now with the prophets. He needs time to sort himself out, before he can truly connect to her again. He quickly steadies himself. "I am so glad that you are alive, Ravi. The Mar Ravoni and I just met today. It seems fate put us in the same basket and we helped eachother. That is why I am here now. But we have so much to discuss. Visit me later, after I have refreshed myself and bound some of my wounds. We need to rest first." He let's go of her hands and turns away, before she would see the insecurity in his eyes.

With an attemt at walking confidently, Faldar heads over to the elves who have already settled in. Bontar and Ptekme follow closely behind, both feeling a bit out of order here among the prophets. Along the way he whispers to Bontar and Ptekme. "Did you see our new friends? They seem more important then I thought. It may be in our interest to work with these people. Try and find out what they are all about."

They arrives at the house a little later and have their wounds bound and taken care off. After the prophet helper has left Faldar asks Zantos. "Well, while the city is a dangerous place, this was a pretty bad day. How are you feeling about the job?"

Bontar smiles as Zantos explains the positive side of the day. It remembers him of other times, when the thrill of battle would make him feel alive and gave him a sense of fulfillment and worth. Those days are past though, and het finds battle without a purpose meaningless. At least, not interesting enough to put your life on the line.

At the same time Faldar interprets Zantos words differently. He looks happy with Zantos positive analysis. "Indeed, Zantos, we've found many good allies today. I am very happy to have recruited you as you have proven your worth not once or twice, but three times today. You and your man are a capable team and very mobile at that. Be sure to keep acting on your own initiative like you've shown today. I think your choices are sound, keep it up."

"Now as to the prophets, they have certainly proven their worth today. But I am unsure whether our feature plans for the city are similar enough for a long time collaboration or even alliance. I do know, that today we have found a common enemy. An enemy that needs to be removed for this city to start rebuilding again. I do see us working together on that goal for now."

Faldar then goes to rest and think over the events of the day. Ptekme does the same and sits in a sleeping position next to Faldar's cot.

Bontar on the other hand has another way of unwinding. He moves over to Zantos and starts discussing some of the fighting skills that he saw today, complementing him on it and working out what they can learn from each other. After which he will rest as well.

Once he concluded the conversation with Agog, he mentally instructed Greven. "Stop by the vicars for healing. Your service will be needed this evening."

The prophet then went to his private chamber. The dray unbound his veil and lowered it. Taking purified water from a bowl, he rinsed his scaled hands and head. Then he took out a rod from his possessions. With an adept, clandestine gesture, a sliver dislodged and pulled along a thin parchment. Satisfied that the necessities stood complete, at least the more immediate duties, the vicar moved about the camp inspecting its current state in preparation to report his review to Lazaar. Agog may be a capable Speaker, and the Kai Duron a fearsome night raider, but the Mar Ravoni bore the pressure as visible leader. Qoheleth understood Lazaar required his counsel to remain fresh and honest. When Greven and Lazaar reappeared, the vicar advanced toward them, bowing, "The Dawn break before you! "Then it seems fate has found a way to reunite us," Ravi says, watching Faldar turn away. Her smile dims, but only for a moment. "Of course. Once my daily tasks are finished, I shall join you to catch up."

As Ravi returns to her duties, showing Rasha, Samon and the other new Watchers around, a vicar arrives to look at Samon's leg and a pair of the prophets lead the prisoners away to another building to be held. The kank and carru are brought around into the alcove where the well is situated, a place they can't easily wander out of and get lost in the city streets. Not that kanks are particularly known for wandering off.

After the group is given basic treatment to help their wounds recover, the vicar and preacher bow and leave them to rest. It's some time after their discussions when Lazaar and Greven arrive again. The Mar Ravoni has cleaned off the grime of battle and has a new set of clean clothes. A second vicar follows them in, to tend to the wounds of those who haven't been seen yet.

Greven ascents to Mar Ravoni and answers Faldar, ”You are welcome, nobleman Faldar. Mar Ravoni leads the Prophets' efforts in the City, accompanied by the Wisdom of Vicars and Voice of Emissaries. The Watcher flocks work within Raam toward the Day when order will return to the City, trusting his guidance.”

Once Faldar added his assessment, the emissary spoke, "We are grateful to have crippled the Killers' efforts. The Vicar of Dust rendered the outpost difficult to reclaim without the blessings of Silt and hid our activity there, which should buy us time to further our efforts. Krono's men did not escape to inform him whom struck his gang down, while we possess some of theirs to peel information.

Mar Ravoni considers our coming together a fortune sign, which we hope will hasten the Day that brings peace to the City. He agrees to labor along with you to remove this problem, and hopes this will lead to future collaboration. House Lufi did a lot for Raam in the past, and it would be good to see the City retain your family's industry."

Qoheleth followed along with the conversation, allowing the Speaker to relate the Mar Ravoni's mind. The Vicar knew his role, but also served the Silt which flowed across the ages as well as their Master. He added, "The Silt twists upon itself around and through Raam. Some rise upon its crests one day only to drown under its weight the next. Krono sits in a circle of stone, trusting his walls to hold back the Silt Sea. Yet, the people grow restless and crave order. It would do well to discover a means to break his hold or to hem him in his tomb while we grow our strength. How are matters in the noble district, honorable Faldar?"

Faldar nods in approval as Greven accepts his offer of collaboration. "Indeed Qoheleth, we should find some way to reach Korno if we are to truly deal with his gang. I can contact some people and see what information I can find, but with the current chaotic situation, information ages fast. As to the situation in the noble district, ... what can I say, ... it's safer then most places due to some patrols we put on the street, but it's mostly for show. I wouldn't go outside at night. The Vespos keep themselves safe behind their gates, which doesn't really help the city. As to House Urvus, they probably make the situation even worse. All in all a pretty miserable situation and not something expect much support from. Personally, I believe we can only change the city little by little, with what little influence or power we still hold. That is also the reason why I recruited Zantos here. With the help of him and his men, we can accomplish much more then before." he then sits back down on his cot again, showing that his exhaustion is still present. "Let's discuss our plans further tomorrow. For now I really need to rest and recuperate if we want to make an impact in the coming days."
"Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one."

Zantos is still relaxing on his cot when Faldar and and the prophets are having their conversation.

"We're in boss. Mar Ravoni, our thanks to you and your people. As simple as it might seem to you, this is the nicest bed I've slept in in years."

After discussing their future collaboration, the Prophets leave once more to return to their own places of rest. Their personal chambers are down in the tunnels, along with most of the dray, where it feels much more like home. Inside one of the guarded buildings, there is a tunnel entrance leading down.

For the rest, they turn in in their cots, getting some much needed rest after the trials of the past day. Throughout the night, all is quiet.

Come morning, the chants and prayers of the Watchers outside the building echo in through the thin wooden door, and sunlight creeps through its cracks and edges. Two shadows form beneath the door, and there is a light rap-rap-rapping at the wood. A familiar lady's voice calls to them from the other side. "May I come in?"
