”My tenant is going to help us out.” Nim says cryptically, gesturing at his brilliant green eyes. He picks up his book and stores it in his bag, along with his already dim glowstick. With the bag closed, the cave is plunged into total darkness, unless the pool has its own light source.

The pool should shine with not-quite-orange light, showing Nim, Spilaio, and a splendid green-eyed lizard, all in a crumbled-open cave lit by sunlight.
This light does not illuminate their actual surroundings; it is only visible in the depths of the pool.

On touching the water, one would find it hard as glass for a brief moment, before it somehow opens up and tries to pull you in, having you take the place of your reflection in the world behind all mirrors.

"Wow," Spilaio breathes, "It's beautiful." She doesn't touch the pool though. She doesn't know what it will do, and she's waiting for Nim to take the lead.

Nim fumbles around until he finds Spiliao’s hand.
”Don’t worry. They’re a friend.” he tries to guide her hand towards the pool as he himself touches it and steps through, just like he’s done before.

At Nim's urging, Spilaio follows him through the pool. Into another world, apparently, one where her cave is full of light and open to the air. Possibly one where the temple was never built above it. Once she's through, she's looking around wide-eyed, surprised both at where she is and the fact that she's standing on her own two feet.

A world where the temple was never built seems right. It's not consistent or predictable what has a reflection or what doesn't.

A not-orange not-sun hangs in a sky run through with silver cracks and lines.
The wilderness that wasn't Hevar stretches around them.
On the shore with the two is Prada, who is something more like a komodo dragon combined with a basilisk, but retains the same golden scales and unnatural green eyes they've always had.
    "Welcome." the creature hisses.

”Even so, I would probably struggle switching between having legs and not having legs. Good on you.” He certainly seems in high spirits. Maybe he’s just happy that he doesn’t have to try getting Spiliao out of that temple in her state. Or maybe he just likes Prada’s company.

After Nim's comment, Spilaio half expects the mysterious lizard god to take his legs away, and maybe hers too for good measure. But she has other things to think about. She's drinking in all the sensations of the outdoors, feeling the breeze on her skin, staring off into the distance. Everything is so big, so far away. It's a disquieting thought. What's that way off in the distance? Is that the edge of the world? She watches the horizon cautiously.

They're lying on the concrete shelf, a humanoid skeleton clad in a loose hospital gown. Written above the crude bed, in long-dried blood, are the words there is no hope here only pain and the skeleton clutches a copper scalpel with an obsidian blade. The third cell is dark, the bulb providing light to the others broken. If Karl provides his own light, or can see in the dark, he'll see another skeleton, this one also originally humanoid, but it has feet where it should have hands and hands where it should have feet. The final cell has been used for storage, and has three brass boxes, an upright vacuum cleaner, and an aluminium folding chair is propped against the wall.

The rooms opposite are surgical theatres, with a bed in the centre fitted with several heavy-duty leather straps surrounded by tables covered in scalpels, probes, bone saws and IV drips. The first surgical room has been destroyed, the straps snapped, the bed toppled and the surgical tools are scattered across the room- along with chunks of bone, shredded plastic surgical gowns and a massive, distorted humanoid skeleton, with thick, gnarled bones, thick claws, a pronounced overbite and a mouth of sharp and pointed teeth slumped in the centre of the room. The second has a human skeleton strapped to the bed, abandoned part way through a procedure- though exactly what that was isn't clear. The next one lacks the bodies of the first two, and the final one has been turned into a small bedroom, the bed covered with new blankets and pillows and one of the tables has had a digital alarm clock placed upon it. There's also three rucksacks piled in the corner, and an umbrella propped up as well.

Karl looks around. He's less disgusted by the corpse then you migth guess. He seems okay with it. This comes through a life as adventurer. Visit old ruins, Graveyards or tombs is far more disgusting then this. Thought he is confused over the scene. He's not dumb, but he isn't common to a high tech world so he doesn't know what surgial measures you can do. After all he assuumes they have been some kind of magical experiments or at worst an intersektion of some kind. As he gets to the last row he is confused. this looks rather fresh and those spiders don't really seem to need a bed. Or just one in general. He will try to enter this one telling the skeletons to stay guard while two follow him. Someone has moved in, but who? maybe he can get some info with the backpacks and then go on. At best he even get's a hint that helps him get through the cave.

The surgery-bedroom isn't locked, and Karl can go poke around. One of the rucksacks is filled with clothes, mostly sturdy trousers and light t-shirts, but there's other stuff in there too. A leather wallet, containing a Riverside driving license, a small amount of money and a photograph of a baby. A single-shot derringer. A six-sided dice with a casino's logo on the six. A plastic bottle, half filled with water. Finally, in the bottom of the bag, there's a set of keys; it looks like there's car keys and house keys on there.

Another rucksack is filled with technical books on engineering, hydraulics, robotics, programming, spider anatomy and mechanics, plus notebooks filled with sketches of spiders, hydraulics, and so on. There's also a scientific calculator with a cracked screen and a book on cooking.

The third rucksack has some camping supplies in it. A small folding barbeque, a packet of water purifying tablets, a ground-sheet and sleeping bag, a box of shotgun shells (but there's no shotgun here, and they don't fit the derringer), a ball of string, a glass wand that feels slightly hot, a packet of energy bars and three tins of corned beef. The wand needs a command word, or else it doesn't work, but there's a small notebook in the bag with only one word written on it- ebmalf. If Karl says that a small flame appears on the end of the wand- a candle, or a lighter maybe.

Nim is a very detail-oriented person!
Or maybe he is really bad at small talk with god-beings. Or reptilian folks. Or just people?
"Well, I thought you could take us somewhere else, like how you got me home the first time. I couldn't have gotten her up that ladder, and she deserves to see the world just as much as you do." he explains, though it's clear he didn't really have much of a plan beyond that.

Spilaio turns and slithers back towards Prada. For a minute there, she had been worried that the lizard god would take her tail away and give her legs. But she's still normal, thank goodness. "Oh, I could go anywhere. I don't even know what's out there to see." Sunning herself would be nice. She's lived her entire life in the dark and cold, and the light feels so good on her scales.

Spilaio slithers after Prada. Even the feel of the grass on her tail is a delightful new experience for her, having spent her entire life underground. She happily whistles to herself as the group progresses over the landscape. It feels so good to just slither onwards, without being trapped by the edges of her pool.

In time, the grass gives way to the smooth stones of the mountainside - but even this, how different it is from the stone of her home pool!
The false-sun stands fixed in the amber sky, an endless calm afternoon.
On the wintery side of the mountain is a door seven meters tall, bordered by ivory pillars in which are carved dancing horses and swans.
Prada taps a claw on the front of these doors and they swing open, revealing stairs descending into blackness. No echo returns from within.
"After you." he says, slinking to the side.

"Well, alright. Don't worry, Sspiliao. SStairss are just annoying. But they're important for people with feet." It can hurt to go down a lot at once, but it isn't that bad. Trusting Prada, Nim descends into the passage.

Spilaio still looks disappointed, but without any further complaint, begins uncertainly slithering down the stairs. It is uncomfortable. She was right. She does not relish coming back up them.

    Prada steps in after them.
The doors swing shut behind him with a heavy crash, but again, no echoes.
"Carry on. You will know when you have arrived."
And in just a short distance, they should feel something like when they passed through the surface of the water.

They're in a real world again, far from Hevar.

Nim is a half-elf again, as he always has been, with bright green eyes.
Spilaio is a serpentine water spirit, as she always has been.
    It is perfectly, completely dark.
They can feel the stairs leading back up.
