Most of the ogres are badly burned; the ogre leader, already badly wounded, dies from the fiery attack.

If they continue to attack, the ogres might bring down another of their enemies, but they clearly wouldn't survive another blast like they just took.

"Retreat! Avenge later!" calls out one of the ogres (#4), apparently making a bid to become the new leader of the survivors.

Three of the four surviving ogres attempt to withdraw: #1, #4, and #6 (who just runs for it).

Ogre #3 is badly wounded both from the fire and from Joel's earlier attack. (ooc: Also, Avakuss has reach, so #3 can't withdraw without provoking an attack of opportunity.)

Ogre #3 curses, but throws down his club and raises his hands into the air. "I surrender!"

Joel, unsure what else to do, readies himself to attack the ogre should the giant make any sudden moves.

Avakuss raises his huge greatsword, ready to finish off the ogre if need be. "Joel, check on Dannos. Adamant, check behind us to make sure we don't have any surprises coming up. Grab a city guard or the like if any are around. I'll deal with this addle-cove." His eyes focus on the surrendering ogre. His voice was firm and cold.

"Don't make a move I don't like or I will burn your legs off. Sit down against the wall. Remove anything worth some jink. Then start talking. Who do you work for? Why are you here? Why were you after us? Where would those berks run off to?"

Each of the fallen ogres has a suit of half-plate armor, a huge greatclub, and 20 gp in his pocket.

Joel inspects Dannos and shakes his head sadly. He then detects magic. "Faint auras on the armor and moderate auras on the clubs."

The ogre sits with his back against the wall, but doesn't remove his armor. "Why should I tell you anything? You a big hero, right? Not harm helpless prisoners?"

Avakuss kicked the various clubs away from the still living ogre. "Big yes, but no one said anything about being a hero. It's your job to make me happy. The happier I am the better off things are for you. Leave me pissed me off for killing my friend and I will have my boss get you and you cohorts Mazed, one by one. You know what that is right? If you only make me a little happy we'll hand you over to the guards to face the leafless tree. Now... Make me as happy as you can under these circumstances and I'll tell the guards you tried to stop the other ogres but got caught in the blast. Then you'll sit in a jail for a bit but you'll live. That's what you want, to live, right?"

The ogre tells you "We serve the Elemental Eye. We were top guards at the temple, often got to kill humans and take their stuff. Cultists gave us fancy weapons. Good times.

Then heroes came, destroyed the temple, killed many of our allies. They had strange powers, like you. They were too strong for us.

Some of us ran for it. Came through gate, to this city. We looked for allies. Cultists tried going through a new gate. One never came back, other vanished soon after. One of us always waited by gate, in case cultist did come back after all.

Then you went through new gate. Rocks everywhere, must have come from other side, so we knew. We are smart. So we thought you must be either enemy or ally.

Three humans found us, claimed to be allies. They seemed like the kind of men we are used to working for, proud and did not mind if other humans are killed. They told us you are enemies, and they would reward us if we kill you. Told us to look for you here.

But now I know. You are not heroes. You let me go, not kill me, I will tell others."

Joel does so. While the walk may not be that long normally, under the circumstances, and lugging along the fallen Dannos as well as the ogres' armor and huge clubs, drawing stares from most passersby, it seems to take far too long.

The Friendly Fiend is a large brick shop with a sign that says WELCOME mounted over the doorway.

OOC: Who enters, and are you bringing everything in?

Those who enter are soon greeted by the proprietor, a a jackal-headed creature with a tall, broad-shouldered figure and clawed hands. His fur pattern has a white swoop down his snout and a black 'bandit's mask' around his golden eyes. As Joel explained along the way, this must be A'kin, the famous arcanaloth; one of the most powerful residents of the city no doubt, and a rather unusual fiend. All sorts of items are displayed in the shop.

In a warm voice he says "Welcome and good morning! Good to see you, Joel! And who are my soon to be new friends?"
