The Giant has an interesting statement in the FAQ for the latest volume in his A monster for every season series.
The goal is that by the time the project is over, the collected set will include pretty much every monster that has ever been released for the game, or at least an exhaustive selection thereof.
Six of the eight books are now available. It's possible that the MitD's species will appear in the eighth volume (winter 2), and that will release right after the MitD is revealed in the online comics. But it's also possible that the MitD is already there hiding in one of the six volumes.

I copied the list of monsters from the first three seasons into an earlier MitD thread, and the fourth season in a separate post. So here's the full list for the fifth and sixth volumes, in case it gives us any ideas.

Do you have a picture of it? That fits within forum rules if applicable.
I'm curious as to how it compares to the overall gait of MitD and specifically the eyes. Like how the Slaad has very very different eyes from MitD in-comic.

Unrelated, I'd like to update my guess to Protean -> Xenocrysth with no Slaad to begin with, given what's been shown of the reproductive cycle and their eyes in-comic.

An explanation of why MitD being any larger than Huge is implausible.

    It could be a Boggart.
Guy who says "I've never seen anything like it!": Fears not knowing things, given that he already knows damn near everything.
Guy who says "and yet, beautiful": some kind of creepy guy who thinks his worst fear is also attractive I don't know
That would explain the mixed reactions (Fully grown man vomits while a small child is slightly uneasy): the child doesn't have any distinctive, crushing fears yet so just sees a grotesque clown or something.
Xykon would either a) know it was a Boggart, planning to use it to crush his enemies' resolve, or b) think it was whatever Redcloak fears most. I'm leaning towards a, as Redcloak would probably most fear his brother (or brother's corpse) and thus would know what MitD was.
The only hole I see is that it doesn't explain Escape or Stomp, but if the Boggart copies the abilities of people's worst fear, maybe that's a something? Like, for the Stomp maybe the roach could see him (since it's a demon and thus can see through even magical darkness) and its worst fear was something with super-feet (cuz, y'know, ROACH). Maybe for the escape what Vaarsuvius most feared was some really powerful magic user.
As a side note: what the ACTUAL HELL would paladins see, since they don't feel fear?

Wouldn't that not really work for a group setting, since all classmates could see what it turned into for the one person it was trying to scare?

Also, it's a creature that 12 year-old wizard apprentices can defeat. Would Xykon and Redcloak see such a creature as so powerful that they both want to get it on their team as their secret weapon?

So, either they keep it to scare people (notice Xykon's original speech about it) or they think it's more powerful than it actually is because Boggart.

MitD is powerful enough to punch horses through walls whilst trying to hit lightly. Boggarts, as far as canon is concerned, can't do that.

Further, if the main draw of a Boggart is that it's supposed to be scary, then it's pointless having MitD with them, as he's about as scary as musty Styrofoam.

Also, notably, MitD is called serious badass in that strip as well, on par with a might lich sorcerer and the high priest of an evil goblin deity.

I'm curious as to how it compares to the overall gait of MitD and specifically the eyes. Like how the Slaad has very very different eyes from MitD in-comic.
The White Slaad's eyes are flat yellow with no obvious pupils - actually fit the MitD quite well.

The Black Slaad's eyes are a little different in shade (white rather than yellow).

Well, sure - if you have the Riddikulus spell. I don't see that spell on any of the D&D class spell lists, though, do you? But yeah, it's not a boggart.

Also, I'd like to change my guess to "Something not yet guessed." I believe that's allowed, since Mightymosy has that listed. My second guess would be a white slaad, followed by the protean.

I just had a thought about MitD, don't know if it was discussed before.

It's hard to explain, I will try.

Could MitD be the "anti" or "opposite" version of someone or something?

Not only visually (I remember we discussed reversed hybrids) but also with his abilities and stats? It's possible that he even doesn't know about this.

Light is hard/heavy for him, sharp is soft and so on.

The tower scene: He tried to hit as *lightly* as possible and sent Miko and horse flying. What if he tried to hit hard, they won't even budge?

The fight with Belkar: He said "it tickles". But he was wounded by paper. Maybe if someone would use feather, it would kill him.

I guess any kind of reversion in creature visuals will be disgusting, but could also be beautiful.

And perhaps it's connected that he eats all the time and is always hungry - maybe he needs "anti-food".

But for now I can't connect it to Escape scene.

In Baldur's Gate 2, there was a demon that could be defeated only by using healing spells on him. Attacking him would raise his hp.

That's essentially the "undead are hurt by healing spells" effect, but on a demon. Nowhere close to what you are suggesting.

I have, though not as a strong candidate. It's called a "nilbog", mentioned once in the comic in #1038 7th panel. They're apparently some kind of goblin that has a weird effect that reverses anything that's convenient for the plot to reverse. Mouser9169 mentions something about an old sourcebook, from before D&D 3, but I don't follow the details.

I noticed the Wasteland Nightmare Beast as well, and came to the thread to see if anyone else had commented. It's shown about as big as a huge dragon in the same set, on all fours (but looking like maybe it could rise up on its back legs with some difficulty). The eyes aren't a great match: they're red and shaped more like the "angry eyes" we see on things like the snarl here, but then again, most of the AMFES monsters are given a lot more detail than the early comics had. It has a big head with a large toothy mouth and large horns that point downward and then curve up. And seeing it in AMFES, we at least know that Rich is aware of the creature and its source material (although we can't be sure when he became aware of them). A (slightly) hidden bit of foreshadowing, or a red herring? You be the judge!

Given that the mention specifically calls them out as "probably not existing" - from the roaches, no less, who (a) break the fourth wall frequently and (2) seem to know what the MitD is - nilbogs seem even less likely.

As far as I remember, both the Dream Larva and the Boggart are old and imperfect contestants.

It is not that I cannot see the similarities between all these various shapeshifters we have tried to make fit over the years and a Glamour/Deadlight. It is in many ways yet another hugely powerful creature that we can try to force into a mold to see if it will fit without us having to cut too many a heel and a toe.

Often times heels and toes are the primary problem. Many of these former proposed candidates miss the mark in part because their "fluff" does not match up with what we have seen the MitD do - not because they are unable to scare, revolt, punch, pull and teleport. The Dream Larva in point of fact is no different: It will explain the circus, the tower and the escape (with some slight rulebending) but it is among other things not known for its great hunger nor is it plausible that there is such a thing as young Dream Larva.

Admittedly 'omnipotence' is a bit boring but what I find so enticing about the Glamour/Deadlight is that it will do what we need it to and the "fluff" seems to fit so well.

A Dream larva is an Abomination. Abominations are generally the offspring of gods with appropriate portfolios - you might expect a dream larva to be the offspring of a God of Dreams - so it could be any age, including very young, if it was only born recently, relatively speaking.

Hmm, there have been more new votes and vote changes since I last updated the running total. And its been 15 months which is exactly as long as it'd been prior to do the last one as well. I'll probably update it soon.

Edit - That post has been updated. The Xenocryst entered the horse race at 5th, just behind the Uvuudaum and ahead of the Glabrezu. Everything else mostly stayed the same, though the Protean did slightly extend its lead.

Had a half written big post explaining all my thinking on this eaten twice now so pardon me for being brief but i have a suggestion. A Neh-Thalggu (Brain Collector).

Incorporeality would explain the toughness and they can cast all sorts of spells depending. They still have, (or can have rather), mouths and if he's missing a full set of brains he could in his childish nature be trying to fill said emptiness explaining his hunger. They don't usually talk, but they get access to all the knowledge and languages of any brains they have. Their definitely out there in terms of appearance too. Also getting the language via a humanoid would explain the lack of coloured speak boxes. Posses one or more brains with good arcane and/or divine knowledge skills would explain their odd affinity and abilities there. Whilst if their dominant brain is somewhat childlike in personality it would explain their overall nature. They can cast spells upto a spell level equal to the number of brains they have too, so the teleport would make sense.

Probably the toughest points are the feats of strength, why a childlike personality brain is dominating, the lack of any other sign of incorporeality, and the alignment.

The last is the easiest as we have Sunny, e.t.c. OTOH i suspect Sunny is heavily tied to Serreni. So i suspect there will be more to his apparent alignment than usual. But various monsters show pretty firmly that alignment is more fluid in the OOTS world.

The first comes down to the question of weather they can manifest anything else other than their bite, (i doubt Miko got hit with the tentacles either). The rules don't explicitly say they can, but i'm not sure if that actually forbids it. And they have a non-existent strength score but their manifested mouth is treats as strength 35, so if he can manifest other bits it's a good strength score.

The incorporeality is a bit of an issue, but O-Chulu says to Lien that he doesn't think he'd believe what he is if he told him and he's otherwise acted ignorant so maybe he doesn't know he can do that stuff. Maybe he thinks he's corporeal.

The big one would be why one brain seems to be dominant. Thats one i don't have a specific answer for, but the rules regarding it grabbing and hold brains largely assume a human or other regular humanoid. I suspect the brain of a sufficiently unusual entity could affect it in unusual ways, be that some epic level entity or hell maybe even a low grade divinity got eaten. Honestly i don't know for sure. But much like Serreni's trollflesh nature i don't think it's unreasonable, it's a situation sufficiently out on the edge of the rules that it's hard to pin down, but i don't think the rules explicitly forbid somthing like that from happening and it having unusual consequences is a natural effect of somthing so odd so i don't think it's beyond the ability of a reader to figure it out.

Like i said had way more written but browser crashes and a dodgy autosave function ate both attempts so i'll leave it here.
