    Sieghard

"I told no one," Sieghard replied, matching the old dwarf's stare. "You've been told more than anyone who wasn't there when I found the thing. Even Prince Sforza doesn't know that the spear exists." The idiot probably would've found some excuse to claim it for himself and then locked it away where it would be worthless if he had known. "I found it, I restored it, and I chose to keep it a secret. Most likely I'd be dead if I hadn't. Three times I've faced the jackal and three times I've driven him back. Outside of my men, you could count the others who have even seen the bastard and lived to tell the tale on your fingers."

"As for who I am," he said, his temper cooling a bit, "I'm just a sell sword who managed to climb higher than most."

Elsa merely sat in silence by Sieghard's side. He seemed to be holding his own quite well, so she chose not to chime in unless the conversation shifted towards her areas of expertise. She had seen before how dwarfs could fly off the handle at quasi-imagined insults.

Skorgrund snorted. "Any dwarf with eyes could have told you that was a rune of power," he said, pointing to the blade. "What do I care whether or not you told your princeling? He's got nothing to do with it. This spear was forged by the revered elders of Clan Dwimmulson. You should have brought it to us."

He peered at Sieghard through narrowed eyes. "Just a sellsword," he repeated. "No ancestors of note? Are you from these parts?"

"Hrmm," rumbled Skorgrund. "And you just... found it."

He paused for a long time, thinking.

"Jotunnsson vouches for you, at least. And if you say you've fought the blood-drinker and lived... well, that's more than most could say." He drummed his fingers on the table-top. "Our clan made the spear as a gift for the umgi who fought alongside us. That king and his kingdom are long gone... but I suppose you could say there are parallels to where we find ourselves today. At least if your princeling ever shows up." He furrowed his brow at Sieghard. "Would you say you're his greatest warrior? Sforza. Are you his champion?"

"There isn't a better fighter than me anywhere in the Reaches," Sieghard said. Rorik had been as good - probably better - but he was dead. There were a few others he could think of who were no doubt skilled and might be comparable, Carraciolo notably, but he hadn't actually seen any of them fight.

"No shortage of self-confidence, then, at least."

Skorgrund sat for a little while in silence.

"As far I see, you have no right to it," he said at last. "You took it from another manling's tomb, which some might call grave robbing. You have no ancestral claim. You kept it from us with no idea of its history." He brought himself up short with an exasperated sigh, as if he wished he could continue. "But... this fight is what it was made for. I'm sure that old manling king wouldn't want it gathering dust while his enemy was breathing the free air again."

He tapped the table hard with one gnarled finger. "It mustn't leave the Reaches. When this is over, you'll bring it to the Dwimmulhold. But until the Black Hound has been put back in his grave, on behalf of Clan Dwimmulson, I'm prepared to allow you to keep it." The craggy eyebrow crept up again. "Provisionally."

Ludo nodded. "I can't think of any better ideas than to stay here for a week or so. We might be able to pick up something that someone who's not dealt with him before would miss."

He turned to Valdez. "Given what happened to Caerfort, if you don't mind my saying so, commander, it might be sensible to move some men to Isolici and Mirino. Maybe start escorting caravans."

"The gate at Mirino is a good checkpoint, we might be able to set something up there..."

Rising from his chair, he looked back to Vico. <I imagine at this hour your good wife is asleep, Vincenzo,> he said, <but I imagine it will go better for you if you tell her what's happened sooner rather than later.> He waited for a reply, but none came - Vico had fallen asleep in his chair, dead to the world. <Or not...>

“Aye,” said Skorgrund, seeming to begrudge the words coming out of his own mouth. “That’s what I said.”

Stiffly pushing back his chair, he lowered himself back down, bringing his head about level with the top of the table. “I’ll be staying here at least until your Prince arrives,” he announced. “I assume this town has somewhere with rooms?”

I’m not going to hold up the IC for it, but are you going to get involved in finding barracks for the dwarfs, or leave it to them and Sussman?

Sieghard, Urgrim & Elsa, 27th Brauzeit

The next three days passed about as peacefully as could be expected with a troop of heavily-armed dwarfs in town. Skorgrund spent the time poring over his books of ancient history and pestering Sieghard with further questions about the spear, while Grunlok made a survey of the earthworks and drew up plans for ‘fixing’ them. In the Star of Marienburg, the innkeeper quickly sold out of what he was told several times a day was “piss-weak manling barley water.”

The weather was growing colder, and dark clouds still lingered over the Dead Hills like guests determined to overstay their welcome. The sentries on the outskirts of town saw nothing worth reporting, but on Bezahltag one of the Thorns in Manann’s Keep claimed he saw a ‘big bird’ flying high over the town. By the time Sieghard was called to the scene, he had lost sight of it.

It was Konigstag when word came down from the lookouts on the fort that Sforza’s army was approaching. The townspeople gathered to greet them, many of them cheering and waving handkerchiefs as the marching column emerged from the woods - though not all. Elsa noticed Lottie Cinderhill sitting on a low knoll some way behind the main crowd, gnawing on a crust of black bread and watching the approaching soldiers with deep suspicion.

The first into town were the Iron Company, with their banner flying and kettle-drums rattling. Rank upon rank of armoured pikemen filed over Evatt’s wooden bridge, more than Sieghard had thought were in Savonne - Sforza must have recalled Caracciolo’s troops from the Shepherd’s Valley too.

Next came Falkenwald’s Falcons, some on horseback, some on foot. Next, a trio of priests - Barbaro, Hechsler and Sister Ioana, with three Shallyan initiates walking behind. Behind them, a team of mules and oxen pulled Filomena and two huge canvas-covered wagons, loaded with great timbers and iron fittings. Looking at them, Sieghard was pretty sure they were the parts of Alvarr’s siege catapults; the bridge groaned beneath their weight as they rumbled over the moat.

Last of all was a horse-drawn coach, its curtains drawn and its doors painted with Sforza’s heraldry. A small detachment of Iron Company men marched on guard duty behind it, making sure the straggling tail of camp followers that followed the column kept their distance. It clearly didn’t contain Sforza himself - Sieghard had already spotted him further up the column, riding his white horse as he watched his troops march over the bridge.

Dismounting, Sforza looked around and walked over to Sieghard, accompanied by an Iron Company honour guard himself. “Sieghard,” he said, by way of acknowledgement. His expression was one of fixed determination. “Where’s Hildebrand?”

    Ludo & Adelbert, 27th Brauzeit

Valdes looked quietly amused. “Alright,” he said. “I’ll leave it in your capable hands.”

Vico’s house was out among the shelving farmland on the south side of town - a homely little cottage down a dirt road between the fields. His wife, an Arabyan woman about ten years his junior, was indeed sleeping, and didn’t take too kindly to being woken. After a few minutes’ bleary-eyed irritation at the strangers knocking at her door, and then a few more of disbelief of what she was being told, she came storming over to the Rooster, where Vico was still fast asleep in old Gill’s armchair.

Ludo and Adelbert left them to the sound of their furious, extremely one-sided argument spilling out into the street. In the torrent of strongly-accented Tilean that came drifting up the hill after them, they could make out a few fragments.

<...This was your ‘hunting trip’ with Alessio? Hm? HM?>
<...Soldiers at my door telling me you were DEAD…>
<...I’ll be as loud as I WANT, the whole TOWN is already talking about it…>

The Stubbs house stood at the very top of the road - Ludo had never been sure whether that was to be close to the mine, or just so that Odo could look down on his neighbours. Letting himself in with the spare key that Petra hid under the pots, Ludo at last pulled off his sand-filled boots, and soon surrendered to exhausted sleep.

I’m going off the plan in this post for what you guys are going to do next, but I’d like to hear how Adelbert’s Magical Sense fits in (is he going to be going door-to-door? Setting up a desk in the village square and getting people to queue up to be seen? Does he have any particular thing he’s looking for?), and if Ludo’s going to be going from town to town putting up the posters personally, I’d like to get an idea of his schedule (when he’ll be in Mirino, when he’ll be in Isolici) and whether he’s taking anyone with him.

With respect to getting copies of the poster made, I think it would take about 2 days in Sermena to rustle those up. With respect to Valdes’ redistribution of troops between the 3 towns, he’ll be making an immediate start on that the next morning - you can expect there’ll be soldiers marching from Sermena to Mirino & Isolici on the 28th, and from Mirino to Isolici on the 29th-30th.

With little else to do these days except await the arrival of Tatiana and keep an eye out for trouble, Elsa was quick to spot the cloud of dust kicked up by the advancing army. She was surprised by the size of the forces gathered, as well as the fact that Sforza himself was leading them. This looked like an army that intended to march on Nath, not just defend the southern border.

She hurried over to Sieghard's side and saluted Sforza.

The Iron Company men didn't hesitate to obey. Two of them stepped forward together, grabbing Elsa by the arms. A third gagged her with a rough strip of sackcloth, cutting off her ability to protest - or more likely, to keep her from casting spells.

"She thought she would play us for fools, Sieghard," was Sforza's only explanation. He motioned to the men holding her. <Take her away. I want her secured - somewhere with stone walls. Nothing that will burn.>

Behind him, Elsa saw the door of the coach open. A soldier laid down a wooden step, and Irene stepped out, resplendent in green silks. The look she gave Elsa as their eyes met was one of unadulterated triumph - and in the shadows of the carriage behind her, Elsa could just make out Tattiana's gagged, frightened face.

"I would start with the soldiers - anyone who's been on watch in the past few days especially, anyone on the streets... maybe wait outside the mine at the end of their shift or go to the pub to get lots of people at once. Lining people up won't do any good - this isn't a big enough community for us to track him through the streets like we did in Savonne.

"Ideally we need to know who's seen him recently and who hasn't... Have I seen him?"

Essentially yeah: prioritise the people who've been on watch on the road in the past few days, then start looking at big groups of townsfolks. The most important thing is to be able to, if possible, identify who's seen him in the past few days if anyone, as compared to anyone who saw him before he left last time.

Elsa was willing to follow without resisting—until she saw that Tatiana had also been taken captive. At this point she angrily strained against the soldiers. Jumbled thoughts ran through her head.

Did Irene plot this? How? Why?

I swear, if they harmed Tatiana...

"Play us for fools how?" Sieghard said, still in shock. "She's been here the entire time."

    Sieghard, Urgrim & Elsa

"She didn't act alone," said Sforza. Elsa threw her weight against the men holding her, making one of them stumble - looking round, Sforza seemed displeased with the number of people who were now staring at the scene. He gave a curt nod to the soldiers holding her, and they tightened their grip, twisting Elsa's arms up behind her back. "You'll hear it all, in time. It's not a conversation I wish to have here."

He waved his hand, and the Iron Company men started dragging Elsa away.

    Sieghard

Sieghard opened his mouth to object, but stopped himself. Nothing he could do right now would free her, and whatever Sforza thought Elsa had done, it seemed that the prince still trusted him. Arguing too loudly would just make it harder to free her later. He looked at the people who had started to gawk, then back to Sforza and nodded. "In time, then," he muttered.

    Elsa

Elsa was marched back over the bridge, to the building that had been Werner Oberth’s workshop before the fateful wreck of the Manann’s Blessing. There, the soldiers tied her hands with a length of rope and pushed her down into the stone-walled cellar, slamming the trapdoor behind her. However she yelled and beat her body against it, no reply came from beyond the hatch.

After a short while, it opened again, and another figure came tumbling through - Tatiana. She looked as wild and dishevelled as the day Elsa had met her, gagged and bound with dried tear-tracks down her cheeks. Elsa only got a brief glimpse of her face before the trapdoor slammed shut again, plunging them into darkness.

    Sieghard (& Urgrim?)

It didn’t take long for Sforza and the army to take over Manann’s Keep. As Sussman scrambled around trying to billet the soldiers, Sieghard found himself wandering through the suddenly-bustling streets, feeling strangely adrift. For the first time in too long, he wasn’t in charge; for the first time since Nath, he didn’t feel in control.

As the Iron Company banners unfurled over the fort, he wandered back through the wooden gates. The Prince, his officers and courtiers had gathered in Evatt’s old audience chamber, where Sforza’s halfling cook had laid out a platter of cold meats. Seeing Sieghard appear in the doorway, Sforza beckoned him in, motioning for one of the servants to pour him a drink.

“I’m sorry for that piece of theatre by the bridge,” said the Prince - as he did so, Irene materialised by his side, the silently frowning Doctor Bianco close behind her. Besides them, Sieghard counted Barbaro, Al-Makir and Falkenwald in the room. There was no sign of Caracciolo. “I would have sent you warning, but we didn’t want to risk her finding out before we arrived.” Putting a piece of cured ham into his mouth, he spoke as he chewed. “Come, sit down.”

“Muzio read me your report,” said Irene, in honeyed tones of sympathy. “What that idiot from the north led you into - it must make it so much worse, knowing she was playing you false.”

“This is the matter of the wizard?” asked Falkenwald.

“It is,” said Irene. “Jurgen, will you excuse us a few minutes? Commander Sieghard deserves to know what happened.”

Falkenwald bowed and retired from the conversation.

“It was that apprentice of hers,” said Irene, returning her attention to Sieghard. “The goat girl. She must have been hoping we would send more troops south with the knights - perhaps she lost her patience with waiting. She tried to dig it up, Sieghard.” She looked at him as if expecting understanding to dawn. “That awful book of hers. The girl went out with a spade in the middle of the night, and tried to dig it up.”

“She had something with her,” said Bianco, his tone sombre and deathly serious. “A... creature of magic. It killed three men, and injured the High Priest when he was called upon to drive it out.” He paused. “We believe she has killed one of the Princess’ handmaidens as well.”

“I would not have believed it myself,” said Barbaro, holding a very full cup of wine. “But… I saw the body.” He looked like he wished he hadn’t - his hand shook a little as he remembered. “Thank Myrmidia that it was slain.”

“The dwarf you sent, he said something ‘escaped’ from those ruins,” said Sforza. “Something that came to the city. Do you think she could have sent it?”

    Sieghard

"I don't think so, no," Sieghard said, struggling to get his head around what he was hearing. "It was the vampire that did it. When we drove it back from the building we held, it used its magic to conjure daemons. I don't even think he could control them - they turned on his minions the same as they did us." He realized that he had to at least pretend to believe that Elsa had been up to something sinister. "Whatever she was doing, I don't think she's in league with the Jackal. If she was, she needed only stand by and let him overrun us." If she wanted the book, she needed only take it and flee after we escaped the Library.

"What I don't understand is how the goat girl would have known where the book was buried." he said. "I brought you the cursed thing and I didn't even know. I thought it was just the men who buried it who knew where it was hidden."

    Sieghard

Irene shrugged. "Magic?" she said. "They are wizards. Sieghard, we searched her rooms. She has a book bound in human skin, full of insane ramblings about how to bind daemons. And she left you letters. Bianco, show him."

The doctor opened a leather scroll-case and pulled out a couple of creased pieces of parchment. Sieghard couldn't read a word that was written on them, but the scruffy handwriting certainly looked like Elsa's.

"Here," said the doctor, pointing to a particular splodge of ink. "Ever since the Battle of Arrow Heap, I have been watched by daemonic beings visible only to me. They demand that I do unspeakable things in exchange for more arcane power." He shuffled to the next page. "And here. I do not trust these spirits. I think they are beings of Chaos, and that the power they offer comes with a price. But desperate times demand desperate measures."

"She is not in league with the necromancer," said Barbaro. "I think she is in league with something else entirely."

"Sieghard, I know how hard this must be," said Irene. "I know she was your... friend. But she's betrayed us." Her eyes were full of pity. "All of us."
