    Default Level 7 cleric spells

    Inspired by the spells you don't want thread.

    Are there any cleric level 7 spells that anyone actually feels are a must have? Haven't looked at them in a while, but that other thread reminded me that I always feel severely disappointed at level 7 cleric spells.

    - Consumptive Field, Greater: Stacks with Consumptive Field and is very helpful in breaking the game completely.
    - Bestow Curse, Greater: Highly useful if you're a dragon and use this to age yourself two categories. See: breaking the game.
    - Holy Transformation: Excellent persist target and provides the "archon component" for several good [good] spells in BoED
    - Holy Star: another excellent persist target, but admittedly mediocre otherwise.
    - Blasphemy, Etc.: If you optimized your caster level, this can be a pretty massive <Win> button.

    There are certainly more "ifs" on that list than I am happy with, but it's a solid list.

    I'm a big fan of Fortunate Fate. Casts Heal on you when you need it most without taking up the Cleric's combat actions, and has a decent duration too.

    Greater Restoration isn't something you're going to want every day, but when you need it, you really need it.

    Destruction, especially if you use a Greater Rod of Chain Spell with it. Since it deals damage (on a failed save) the secondary targets don't have a reduced DC for Chain Spell.

    • Control weather, AKA "Destroy army" is useful if you want to drop a tornado, hurricane or blizzard on someone who isn't expecting one.
    • Destruction is a save-or-die which, I mean, pretty strong.
    • Ethereal Jaunt is a good way to not die.
    • Regenerate is all fun and games until someone loses an eye.
    • Resurrection is, uhm, resurrection. In a world where you don't know reincarnate (which messes up most people's builds anyway), raise dead won't cure most things and true resurrection is usually unnecessary, it's your go-to for exactly what it says on the tin.
    • Summon Monster VII can help you beat someone up, and then if your summons survive, some of them (like 1d3 bralanis or 1 avoral) can heal you at the end of combat as well - they're not worth using instead of heal but they're pretty good support in combat and can dump their healing on someone when it's all over.


    None of them is exactly a must-have (unless you're fighting an army. Control weather, my friend) but they are all quite nice.

    Blasphemy/Holy word etc. can be excellent

    Control Weather and Planar Bubble allow you to modify the environment in major ways.

    Regenerate, Restoration - Greater and Resurrection can be useful on a bad day.

    Scry Location can also be solid - if you like scry and die tactics.
    π = 4
    Consider a 5' radius blast: this affects 4 squares which have a circumference of 40' — Actually it's worse than that.

    Not sure about essential, strictly speaking, but most desirable picks for me would be:

    • Blasphemy / Dictum / Holy Word / Word of Chaos
    • Destruction
    • Ethereal Jaunt
    • Nar Fiendbond
    • Refuge
    • Renewal Pact
    • Restoration, Greater
    • Resurrecton
    • Spell Resistance, Mass

    Not mentioned yet, but there are a few other good ones.

    Greater Plane Shift --- Greater teleport across planes.
    Necrotic Tumor --- More dominating than dominate monster.
    Greater Scrying --- You to can see things far, far away.
    Finger of Expulsion --- Finger of Death, except not a [death] spell, works on nonliving creatures also, and targets Will save.

    Outside of the ones already on the list, earthquake is nice to have early but most of the rest of the domain sucks, and fire storm is much the same. Spell turning is occasionally worthwhile, particularly since you spend one seventh-level spell to get 7 levels worth of attack and 7 level levels worth of defence at a minimum assuming that anyone actually tries to cast against you. Animate plants, grasping hand and screen are all okay, and greater teleport is very nice.

    Actually, not sure about Renewal Pact - it got nerfed in SC to be a contingent Panacea instead of a contingent Heal.
