    Iriander hisses a warning to Ssrask. "Hold up. Let's back off quick, so I can relight my torches before we get into this."

    Iriander slowly backs up, to behind a tree away from the spider's view. He takes out his torches, and takes a few seconds to light it. After doing this, he takes two Basher leathers and casts Mage Armor on Berserker and Ash. Then, he comes back to Ssrask with the giant grape in hand.

    "Don't want to forget the buff," he says, splitting the fruit in half. He eats one half, and offers the second half to Ssrask.

    "I have some more throwing-sized rocks," he says, gesturing to a pouch. "I was also planning to start burning away the webbing. I agree that the webbing above the tree looks like a trap; perhaps if we burn away enough of the webbing, it'll trigger it preemptively, or provoke them into coming to us instead of us going to them."

    He offers the rocks to Ssrask, and gives three to Berserker. "Berserker, get ready to throw if they start approaching us," he says, before kneeling down. He will stop if Ssrask motions him to stop, but he begins to burn away the webbing close to them. He keeps an eye on the monstrous spider for when it (inevitably) attacks them.

    As Ssrask throws the rock, but before it hits the ground next to the spider, the large spider lets out a scream and drums its pedipalps on the ground in a repetitive pattern.

    The trees begins to shake, causing the suspended branches to sway precariously, as a massive swarm of spiders emerges from the central tree and swarms around the clearing looking for intruders.

    Ssrask really wanted to charge in and confront the threat head on, but as he looked up at the deadfalls hanging by webbing, it seemed too obvious that a charge would cause those things to fall on his head. The spiders they had faced weren't overly deadly, but being weakened before ever even engaging could spell disaster.

    Instead, he held his position defensively. Better to let them congregate and approach him, suffering the biting cold of his aura than charge and leave Iriander.

    This is indeed a Swarm swarm.

    Berserker's rock hits the large spider, and it screeches loudly. Spiders hidden in the treetops respond by snipping key threads of webbings. All the branches supported by the webbing in the clearing crash to the ground, killing several of the spiders under them. Something may have directed the spiders to set traps, but they're definitely not smart enough on their own to know when not to trigger them.

    The swarm notices you and swarms towards you, swarming the whole group for swarm damage. Swarm. The swarm covers an area about the size of three swarms, but it doesn't seem to do any more damage than a smaller one would.

    Iriander's swing goes wide, and he quickly buckles under the poison and the swarm's presence. "Hack, argh, here, Berserker, take this," he gasps out, handing his lit torch to Berserker.

    Berserker, stoic under the weight of the swarm, takes the torch. With a roar, he swipes at the swarm with the fire, hoping to enflame a goodly amount of them.

    Ash, realizing the spiders that make up the swarm are too infinitesimal for her to bite, retreats and waits for a chance to strike something worth striking.

    Oh, hey, House Rule: Animals/Vermin/etc. that can only use natural weapons can attack anything, regardless of their size. They just might take an attack penalty when doing so.

    Oh, that was referring to the fact that Swarms are immune to weapon damage. Like, she can attack it, sure, but she wouldn't be able to damage it. I was trying to show that through the narration, Ash realized (possibly through her newfound bond with Iriander) that striking the swarm would be fruitless.

    If you're saying that creatures with only natural weapons can damage a swarm, then that is awesome and I will utilize that fact in the next round (but I'm also a worrywart for Ash, so she may be sitting the swarm out anyway...)

    Yes, the house rule allows them to damage swarms. It's actually part of a nerf to warlocks that can spam summon swarm that gives low level mobs a chance to actually do something other than just run away and bleed out.

    Berserker takes Iriander's torch and swings it through the spider swarm, burning many of the spiders to death.

    Ssrask finds his natural attacks do work on the swarm, but they are somewhat less effective than he would like but more than he had originally expected.

    The swarm takes an addition (1d6)[3] cold damage from Ssrask's aura.

    The swarm is greatly reduced in size, down to slightly more than half the size it was to begin with.

    It continues to affect only Iriander, Ssrask, and Berserker, as Ash has retreated and it doesn't seem to be following her.

    The large spider begins drumming its pedipalps again, though in a different pattern. The spiders in the treetops scurry over to where the three of you are gathered and obviously prepare to drop down on top of you. You aren't sure exactly how many there are, because the trees and webbing block your sight, but you see at least 5 or 6 of them.

    Once again, Iriander succumbs to the swarm's presence, unable to ignore the creeping-crawling sensation of them on every inch of his body. He stumbles away, retching and scrabbling fruitlessly at the spiders on him. Berserker takes a swipe at the giant cloud of spiders, then backs up with Iriander. Ash backs up a bit more, then readies herself to pounce once the swarm comes closer.

    "Ssrask, back up, away from the spiders in the canopy," he hacks out between retching.

    Ssrask scoffed at the call to retreat. His claws and tail still working on smashing the swarm into paste. "Fall back if you must, but I haven't even begun to fight!" Calling on the draconic blood coursing through his veins, his body bulged, as if the muscles had been pumped full of adrenaline.

    His predatory eyes dilated and fangs bared, there was no doubt that he was enjoying himself in the chaos of this battle.

    Ssrask tears apart the swarm to the best of his ability. The swarm continues to freeze around him. (1d6)[1]

    Even with only 1 damage, the last aggressive members of the swarm die, and the few that remain disperse harmlessly into the surroundings.

    Iriander shrugs, seeing as Ssrask ended up taking out the swarm in the end. "Berserker, try to give Ssrask some flanking!" he yells. "Ash, get in there, too!"

    Ash bounds to the closest Small spider, ripping at it with her fangs while flanking with Berserker. Berserker, for his part, steps away such that he is between a spider and Ssrask, before lashing out with his claws.

    Spying the spider still in the back, Iriander begins to cast a spell.

    Despite fangs piercing the scaly armor of the lizard folk, no blood seemed to be drawn. His arcane fortitude shrugging off both the damage and poison that was injected.

    His fury of natural weapons was focused on the small spiders, leaving the tiny to a cruel fate of being frozen by the aura pouring from his body.

    Berserker misses with his AoO against the tiny spider but resists the poison as it bites him for 1 damage.

    The two small spiders bite at him but fail to do any damage with their attacks.

    Ssrask manages to kill one of the tiny spiders as it leaps from the trees and avoids the bites of the other two tiny spiders.

    His tough hide resists the first small spider's bite, but a lucky bite to the back of his knee pierces the thinner protection there sending a weak poison through his veins which he easily resists.



    Ash tears into a small spider, quickly gutting it and leaving it to bleed out.

    Ssrask dispatches the last remaining small spider and two of the tiny ones, leaving only a single tiny spider to attack, which continues to attack its original target, Berserker.

    It's really hard to parse that many attack and damage rolls when split up like that, especially when I post replies from my phone. There are preformatted attack rolls on your character sheet (the yellow cells to the left of each weapon entry). If you would please use either those or something like those, I would appreciate it, as it makes my job much easier.

    Like clockwork, Iriander finishes casting, and a jet-black wolf appears beside Berserker and Ash. "Berserker, chuck another rock at it while the wolf tests the waters," he calls out, and starts to orate in a bombastic tone of the grandeur and strength of their party. Berserker steps to the side of the tiny spider (if it's still alive) and chucks the rock as the wolf closes in with the large spider, snapping its jaws out. If needed, Ash cleans up the remaining tiny spider.

    As the last tiny spider froze and shattered under the bitter chill of the frost dragon aura, the gob of webbing flying past Ssrask's head caused him to focus on the threat that had started this entire struggle.

    Without the tree limbs dangling ominously overhead, his body surged with vitality and he threw caution to the wind. A throaty bellowing roar was followed by a charge with claws bared.
