    Aleph Station

A "simple" game of betrayal and mystery in space

    Spoiler: Mission Briefing
    Show
    [Transmission starts]
    Greetings agents,
The information I am about to share with you may not leave this room. Anyone who shares this information will be guilty of high treason.
As you are aware, research station Aleph went dark roughly 5 weeks ago. The station was researching artificial intelligence, and we have reason to believe that before their untimely end, they reached a significant breakthrough. We also have reason to believe that sabotage is the cause of the communications blackout. Be on your guard. There may be a traitor amongst you. The station's security systems are likely still functional, and significant interference will make communication difficult. Your task is to retrieve the prototype AI core from the station's central vault and bring it safely back to headquarters for examination. Good luck agents.
    [Transmission ends]

    Spoiler: Overview
    Show
A secure research facility has gone dark. The Agency has dispatched a team of skilled operatives to recover the lost research. However, Aleph Station is a dangerous environment, and there is a traitor in the agents' midst.

    Spoiler: Rules
    Show
    Rounds last approximately 48 hours.
All actions must be placed in spoilers, like so:
    Spoiler: Action
    Show
    Actions attempted this turn

You may also speak to other characters using spoilers, like so:
    Spoiler: Room Name
    Show
Everyone in the room can read this spoiler
    Spoiler: Player Name
    Show
If both you and the target player have functional communicators, they may read this spoiler.

In the spirit of fair play, do not read spoilers if these rules would not give you access.
You may only post one set of actions each turn, but may send any number of messages.
You may make as many edits as you wish to your actions before the end of the turn.

    Spoiler: Gameplay
    Show
At the start of each turn, each player will receive a description of their environment, including what happened during the last turn.

Each turn, you may post a spoiler dictating what action you would like to take. Sample actions include moving to an adjacent room, interacting with an object in the environment, or attempting to help or harm another player.
If an action has a chance of failure, roll a d6. If it meets or exceeds a predetermined target number, the action is successful. Otherwise it fails, and there may be consequences.
You will have skills that provide a +1 or +2 bonus to certain tasks.
If you are targeting another player with a harmful effect, they set the target number by rolling to resist.
If you fail to post actions for a given turn, you are assumed to be waiting. If you wait for too long, bad things might happen!

All characters are ordinary humans. They can't survive most attacks. If an attack hits you, you begin bleeding out. If you bleed out without receiving medical attention for a full turn, you die. Equipment and character abilities may prevent this.
Dead characters are dead. You no longer may post actions or messages to other players. However, you may read all spoilers.

    Spoiler: Character Creation
    Show
All characters have the following resources:
A code name. Agents do not know each other's real names.
A weapon of their choice, and a skill (+1) to use that weapon.
Light body armor. The first time you would begin bleeding out, your body armor is damaged and rendered non-functional instead.
    A non-functional communicator.
Two additional skills of the player's choice, one at +2 and one at +1. You may make your weapon skill a +2 if you make both of these skills +1.
A simple personal item of your choice, subject to GM approval.

Furthermore, at game start, all characters will receive a role, which is randomly assigned and provides additional skills and equipment. If a role would provide you with a skill you already have, gain a new skill at the same value as the old one. If it would increase one of your skills which is at 2 points already, increase one of your other skills instead.

    Spoiler: Application
    Show
    Codename: Fairy
    Skills: Pistol +1, Stealth +2, Computers +1
Equipment: Pistol, Light Body Armor, Non-functional Communicator, Swiss Army Knife
    Role: ???
Description (optional): Fairy is a tiny woman in her late 20s with brown bob with a fringe and light skin. Despite her size, she is no less athletic than her companions. She is dedicated to her job, and trains every day when she's not on a mission. She believes achieving anything is almost always possible if you correctly approach the problem, though this may lead to her overthinking things. On the other hand, she's not one to deliberately beat around the bush if there's an issue that's unpleasant to approach. Knowing the value of a good team, she never starts running into the action before making at least a rudimentary plan with her teammates.

Hello there, one heavy weapons dude coming up:

    Spoiler: Application
    Show
    Codename: Chain
    Skills: Minigun +2, Alertness +1, Maintenance +1
Equipment: Minigun, light body armour, non-functional communicator, tactical flashlight
    Role:

    Description (optional)

"All right, team, take your positions, and stay out of my way."

Chain is not a subtle guy, being about six foot three and made primarily of muscle, as well as carrying a huge weapon - and not being very shy about using it. He's a little headstrong, but he's no idiot, and if there's a more sensible way to approach a problem than catching it in the brights and gunning it down, Chain's happy to do it differently - although you wouldn't know it given how gruff he generally is.

I only realised most of the way into it that I basically made the opposite of the character above. Oh well!

    Show
    Codename: Doc
    Skills: Taser +1, Lying +2, Medicine +1
Equipment: Taser, light body armor, non-functional communicator, The Idiot's Guide to Field Surgery[Book]
Description: A short, slight man with a handlebar moustache and a thick Indian accent, Doc claims that he has a phd in medicine and only brought The Idiot's Guide to Field Surgery as a joke. You did catch him reading it a little too intently on the shuttle to Aleph station, but when he saw you looking, he winked at you as if it was all part of the jest.

I've gotten a chance to get stuff sorted, and now I'm ready to go.
I'm thinking a week, maybe two before starting the game, and I will start it even if I don't get the 6 people I wanted.

Speaking of people, all the characters so far look good! No complaints from me there.

No idea. It's the first time I've tried it. Assuming everything goes perfectly for the loyal agents, about 12-15 turns, judging by what I have planned so far.

I'll get to work on a quick application.

    Codename: Scrap
    Skills: Pistol +1, Alertness +1, Maintenance +2
Equipment: Pistol, Light Body Armor, Non-functional Communicator, Duct Tape
    Role: Preferably Jack or Mechanic.
    Description:

"Did you idiots really break this thing again? Uggghhhh."

A tall, stringy woman in her mid-30s, with a mess of dirty-blonde hair barely restrained into a loose ponytail, and a set of almost-permanent bags under her eyes. Her favorite thing is coffee, and her second favorite thing is complaining, usually mixed with a heavy dose of her third favorite thing, sardonic quips.

Though her results are inarguable, she has a reputation as generally ornery, slovenly, and somewhat lazy, and generally that's fairly true. However, she's much sharper and more perceptive than she tends to let on, and when the chips are down, she's a fast and inventive thinker, always looking for the less obvious solution.

I noticed that quite a few of the players are requesting roles. Is that allowed?

I have an idea for a drone tech that would have a drone as a sort of force multiplier for the group. Would that be allowed?

    On the topic of roles.

In retrospect, it probably wasn't a great idea, but I'm going to stick with it for now.
You may request roles. I will try to accommodate these requests, but you may receive a different role, especially if the same role is requested by multiple people. More importantly, I will not assign roles that absolutely do not fit the character. A burly heavy weapons guy is not going to be the infiltrator, for example.
I hope that clears up any questions you have.

    You're no fun!

On a more serious note, I think for my charcter demolitionist is probably best, although I don't mind bodyguard or if you can't do that either, jack/mechanic/rookie are all fine I guess.

    Codename: Aurora
    Skills: Fistfighting+1, Investigation+2, Alertness+1

    Role: TBD

    Description (optional):

"Let's all take a deep breath and relax. One stray shot could blow a hole through the pressurizer sealing and kill us all."

Aurora is a slight woman of about average height with long, tawny-red hair and bright blue eyes. She doesn't appear to be much of a fighter nor carry a weapon, but her training does not leave her defenseless. Having worked as an ambassador and a field officer, Aurora's strongest skills are her alertness, her resourcefulness, and the ability to keep a team together. Her tact to help prevent an unnecessary conflict is also ideal.

My character, Fairy, would probably be a Wetwork Agent, Medic, Rookie or Infiltrator.

    A perfect 10 people!

I do have some feedback and changes I want made for WindStruck, but that won't stop me from accepting everyone and starting the game later today.

    @WindStruck

Although conceptually you're good, mechanically there are a couple critiques. First of all, I did require that one of your skills be a weapon skill, and that you have the matching weapon. I'd recommend that weapon not be pepper spray as well. This is a game where there will be PvP conflict, and you want the ability to kill someone else if you need to. The other critique is related. I don't think Persuasion is a skill I want to allow, because there will be PvP, and as a result, skills that could potentially cost other characters their free will are... Iffy. You might want to replace that with another skill. The most similar skills I'd allow without question are lying and intimidation. But this isn't stopping me from accepting you, I just want these changes made before we start.

I also want to make a note about rolling. Since this is a game of secrecy, I will be making all rolls in secret. I will record the results and reveal them at the end of the game

And lastly, the game will begin later today, once I get the last couple details finalized.

    Any critiques of my application?

Ah, dang! Hmm.. What is the difference between Intimidation and Persuasion, though?

I wasn't thinking of a mind-control anyway. Just didn't know if there were other hostile entities we would encounter, you know? And I'm also thinking that if Persuasion was allowed on other players, and a roll was successful, it would more like just be asking the player "pretty please go along with this", but I imagine if they have a good reason not to they still won't.

I'm also thinking that there's going to be nine loyal agents and only one traitor. Do we really want to kill people willy-nilly? It could be best to use pepperspray to disable someone, giving them some big disadvantages (easily killed by another armed player), then they could be caught, interrogated, maybe even detained in some kind of jail cell!

Or.. is this meant to play out exactly like a mafia/werewolf game?

    To each of your questions.
1: Intimidation doesn't control in the same way. Instead it functions to frighten someone, more in the vein of inflicting penalties.

2: You don't have to switch out pepper spray (although you do need to switch one of your skills). I just wanted you to know what the impact of choosing it might be.

3: No, this will play differently from Werewolf, or I would be running it through that part of the forums. This is going to need a different type of detective work to solve.

And on that note, the OOC Thread is now live, and the IC will soon follow. I'll try to get it up at a defined time so I have something to shoot for timing turn changes.
