Does anybody know the name of this story?
There's a short story where the main character seemingly suddenly loses his sight, but then it turns out that he has somehow gained the ability to see things at a specific place relative to his position on earth (I think the antipodal point of his location), and the reason hos sight initially seemed totally gone was that the corresponding location was inside a mountain or something like that, but then when he left the initial location he could suddenly see a ship that he knew to be on a distant coast because an acquaintance was on it.

That sounds like the most annoying and near useless power. Unless he gets more control later.

It's not a superhero story, it's like an old science-fiction short story. I think it's from the early to mid 20th century, or possibly the very end of the 19th century.

I found it! It's a story by HG Wells called "The Remarkable Case of Davidson's Eyes"
