Re: Worse Than the Disease IC
Sean Pires
"Well, let's try and see if that would do any good. It's not like we are pressed for time. I think it might go better with some rope or a string, that is, if they prefer they food moving." If Sean can have a rope or a string, he'll tie two pounds of meat to it and try to have it eaten by as many ratdogs as possible. If the string is not available, he'll just trow two rations down, one hear the tree and the other further away, and then watch them while Tariq tends to the man.
SpoilerSean does not have the backpack with him, so no jerky. If somebody else has some of our jerky on them, Sean will use that. Otherwise, the locals' rations. Two pounds worth in any case.Last edited by u-b; 2021-04-06 at 11:44 AM.

Re: Worse Than the Disease IC
Looking out of the treehouse thoughtfully, Richard considers the story. "Do you still have anything that got covered in that liquid? If that stuff riles them up enough to attack you, we might be able to use it to bait them out."
Spoiler
Richard has that small backpack we found, and has some food and drink among his carried gear. Should be able to cover our jerky needs.

Re: Worse Than the Disease IC
Tariq helps the victim as best as he can - he treats the cuts and bites, both of them quite large. Making sure he sterilizes the wounds, he finishes the job with a shot of painkiller drugs. The victim relaxes and falls asleep, feeling much better and less close to death.
The treehouse does have some rope stashed here. They primarily use it to hoist things up from the ground.
There is food available to use as bait. The only question is, just what will try to snack on it?
(OOC: Just post when you're gonna try it...and mark off the food used.)

Re: Worse Than the Disease IC
Sean Pires
After estimating the amount of jerky Richard has available for the whole setup, Sean ties a pound of it to the end of the rope and throws down somewhere not too far from the nearest trailer, which takes three attempts to get right. Sean then waits to see if anything comes to eat it.
SpoilerMarking off two rations from Richard's backpack.

Re: Worse Than the Disease IC
The plan works, the bait lands on a good spot and, only a minute later, a pack of 7 strange creatures rush over to nibble at the meat.
The strange creatures may mutated rats of unusual size, or dogs that have mutated into ugly and weird things with pronounced claws and jaws. Either way, they are hungry...

Re: Worse Than the Disease IC

Sean lets the creatures eat the meat, then pulls up the rope. He ties another pound of jerky to it, together with a fragmentation grenade, tied in such a way that the grenade is to go off when the jerky is removed. He makes sure the whole setup is solid, then pulls the pin and carefully lowers it down on a rope. He intends to watch it only until the ratdogs bite the bait, then take cover.
SpoilerMarking off two more rations from Richard's backpack.

The rumbling of the explosion shakes the snow off some surfaces and a few shrapnel fragments embed themselves in the outer walls of the treehouse harmlessly but grimly.
Sean pokes his head and scans the area...and finds no ratdogs escaped the blast. All he sees remaining is the badly crushed, cut and KO'd beasts lying amongst the shredded environment.

"Well, we have an alarm bell we ring when we have trouble coming, and we ring it again to sound the all-clear..." The woman is interrupted by Sean firing off a shot from his rifle at a bear-like thing in the distance and hitting it square in its side. Sean recognizes the mutated animal as the same kind of weird horror he once fought at night over a campfire - something that could've once been a black bear.
(OOC: the "bear" is SM +1, -4 Range penalty.)

Re: Worse Than the Disease IC

Sean lets the wounded bear be. He expects it to fall unconscious sooner or later and, if not, it would be a good data point. "Not sure about that bell now. You may ring it twice unless it would be interpreted that we have won." He keeps looking out for more mutated animals, expecting to spend one bullet on each until he can spot none in 20-minutes time.

Re: Worse Than the Disease IC
10 seconds later, another mutated bear ambles into view, and Sean shoots it in the side. The hit is less sure this time, though, as the animal is left only reeling with a nasty injury...But it still slumps over, stunned and hurt...
The bear Sean shot earlier starts looking for the shooter, still powering through the wound.

"I guess things should be pretty much in control at the moment. I plan to suppress them as much as I can before we move out. Will need your help when we do, but hopefully no sooner." Not quite satisfied with his last shot, Sean aims at the last wounded bear and shoots again. Then he lets both the bears bleed and wander around while he looks for other targets.

Re: Worse Than the Disease IC
Content to let Sean handle the bears with the scoped rifle, Richard sits by the window, keeping his rifle in hand but not firing yet. Turning to look at the people they were helping, he smiles as he says "So hey, who are you guys, anyway? Might as well get to know you while we wait for the bear situation to get solved. Doesn't hurt to have more friends out in this world, right?" More practically, having a safe port in a storm other than the radar base and the Waffle House felt like a good idea, now the raiders knew about the base.

A fifth bear-thing wanders into sight just long enough for Sean to snipe it in its shoulder plates.
It is not enough to knock it down or kill it, but it does communicate the message; "Leave now, or die with your fellows."
Meanwhile, the creatures still capable of movement finally take the hint and start running away as best as their pained bodies can take them. Re: Worse Than the Disease IC
Sean Pires
"Well, I see no more targets so how about we take a walk? A guided tour, preferably." Says Sean looking at the armed woman.
SpoilerThe plan is to first walk around the encampment, stealthily, but remaining in the open so as not to be subject to surprise attacks. Then check all the locations where the animals might be still hiding. Then examine the bottles that are presumably related to this, or what's left or them (for now, no touching). Then declare it's done. Interruptible at any point by anything.Last edited by u-b; 2021-04-15 at 11:13 AM.

Re: Worse Than the Disease IC
The woman gulps, but she still nods. "Okay, but stay close."
The "guided tour" leads you all around the camp grounds, where you discover the chewed on corpses of other squatters in and around the various shanty houses and deserted buildings.
No other animals are lurking or alive here. The knocked out mutants get finished off with a stab or ten to the organs.
The woman leads the exiles over to the thrown chemical bottles that started all this. As she said, the fluid is yellow and stinky. It has dried and faded pretty badly thanks to exposure.Anachronism will never high-light the folly of my convictions!

Re: Worse Than the Disease IC
Sean Pires
Sean counts the bodies as he walks through the camp grounds. He intents to have an approximate numbers of both survirors and victims of the events. If at least one botle still remains intact, Sean corks it and packs. Otherwise, he moves on. Sean then tries to estimate how dark it will be upon their arrival to the ski resort if they leave within 20 minutes and says that he'll need help to radio something if the locals do not mind. By the way, how many men on how many motorcycles and whether it's known whence they come and which way they left?
SpoilerDid we finish all of the bears or do some of them still need tracking? If the later, do locals need any help? The "how dark" question is ideally answered with a darkness penalty and interval of time before it's pitch black.Last edited by u-b; 2021-04-16 at 12:05 PM.

Re: Worse Than the Disease IC
None of the bottles remain intact. They are all broken. It will still be light out by the time they reach the ski resort. The locals can allow him to make a radio call, yes. The men on motorcycles were three in number, they came from the north, and they went west afterward. The bears who ran away are either severely injured or about to pass out, if you had to guess. The locals can simply organize some defenses in case the bears come back, with a few guns they have. But if they clean up the smelly yellow liquid, the bears probably will not come back.

Re: Worse Than the Disease IC
Sean Pires
"These animals are not good to eat, so unless you want to get sick you just dump them somewhere away. The ones escaped should be down too, probably not very far. Your choice of what to do with them, if anything."
Back at the radio, Sean explains what he wants.
"I want to call the ski resort and ask about the situation. If you would be unable to establish a communication, call the radar base and they will relay it."
Once the communication is established, one way or another, Sean tells the ski resort people that some help might be incoming, maybe tonight, but probably no later than the morning, and he would need an introduction to the situation at hand to plan the approach.
1. How they should be identifying themselves to avoid being shot at by the defenders?
2. How many attackers are there in total on how many of what types of vehicles?
3. Anything of note about the attackers' armaments (sniper rifles, auto rifler, machine guns, etc.)?
4. Supposing the sky resort has some sort of hill/mountain and some buildings, how are the buidings and the people under sige located relative to the mountain, the road(s) and the compass?
5. How are the attackers' vehicles and the attackers themselves located?
6. Is there any other help incoming that should be coordinated with?
SpoilerAnyway, how many locals are dead and how many are alive? Approximations would be enough. Just trying to estimate how large is this encampment and how badly it's hit.

Re: Worse Than the Disease IC
The camp ground squatters fire up the radio and get the exiles in touch with the ski resort.
The ski resort people say that they'll all be wearing heavy white camo parkas. The attackers are wearing black leathers and some metal armour.
They say the attackers are in cars - about six of them. They killed four of the attackers. The attackers may have called in backup.
The attackers have automatic rifles, Molotov cocktails and blades.
The ski resort is on top of a slope, and the road winds up to it.
The cars are being driven around constantly, in and out of sight. Most of them are behind big heavy cover. The individual attackers on foot are harder to keep track of. They are mostly sneaking around the mountain now, attacking only now and again after the first initial push got stalemated.
No other help than the exiles are incoming.
The camp ground locals now number 9 alive and 13 dead.Anachronism will never high-light the folly of my convictions!

Re: Worse Than the Disease IC
Sean Pires
Sean tells the ski resort people to await assistance and not to illuminate the battlefield away from they immediate surrounding once the bullers start flying. He also briefly describes what everyone of the team looks like in as much details as can be seen from afar. He tells the ski resort can request an identification flashing a flashlight three times and would receive a response of three flashes in return. He then tells the camping ground people to monitor the radio for any news, including those related to them, mostly replenishes the magazine from what rifle rounds they had in the car, and takes a grenade in place of the one spent. He then starts the car and drives it in the southern direction. It seems he takes a wrong turn somewhere or tries to use a road that no longer exists. It costs some time and fuel to sort out.
SpoilerLet's assume we took 5 mines and let the remainder defend the radar base.
