The battle in the darkness is nerve-wracking as all heck, but both Sean and Richard do spot a few bunches of attackers in the woods and a nearby ruin (not the one Tariq collapsed), after finding a good position.

The closest group of attackers is a few men, who are lighting molotov cocktails. They have already thrown a few at the settlement, starting bright fires.
A Waffle House guard fires a flare into the woods, and reveals the location of a bigger group of men (about 6) who are behind trees and crawling through undergrowth.
The attacker in the ruin are using broken windows on the second floor to fire single shotguns at security forces.

Tariq loads an illumination grenade into his launcher (3 seconds). Does he see any attacks coming from the darkness, or did the Waffle House's flare illuminate all the (obvious) attackers?

Still crouching partly behind the cover, Sean shoots a long burst at the guys with the molotov cocktails. He cannot get it straight from the start, but then walks his fire on-target for the remaining part of the group.

Sean's rapid fire of 14 bullets manages to hit four of the 6 would-be grenadiers, laying them low in a flash of lead. The rest quickly get the hint and retreat - slipping away from the Waffle House and into the woods further out.

Tariq sees shots incoming from places other than where the flare is. It seems to be coming from two dark areas in the distance (about 40 yards, at a guess), and it looks like they're shotgun slugs.

Tariq will launch the round towards the sources of the attacks, illuminating both if possible (covers a 185-yard radius, so may be possible).

The huge burst of light really catches the bad guys off-guard. Practically every attacker in the woods is caught in the illumination, most of them not behind trees or bushes. Seeing their cover of darkness blown, the attackers immediately break off the offensive and begin running away. It seems most of the mutants were depending on using the night to avoid a counter-attack, so they run.

As the attackers start to run, Sean begins to pick them out one by one with quick aimed shots using iron sights until no one is left in sight.

Then he shouts: "I want some alive! Don't finish the buggers!"

12 bullets then, as that's max RoF. Some will get only one assigned, which should be just as well.

As he sees the mutants retreating, Richard starts lining up leg shots at the mutants that are still up - it's a lot easier to capture enemies that only have one healthy leg, and it's a lot less likely to accidentally kill one of them, which suits him just fine.

Sean blasts a bunch of stragglers who fail to get away in time. All in all, he shoots 7 in the back, they do not survive the shots despite their unnatural toughness.
Tariq launches a nice big boom right into a cluster of bad guys. He thinks he got them, but the one direct hit seems to kill only one. Still, at least it clears some cover...
Richard's attempts to take the legs of retreating mutants manages to cripple 7 bad guys, their legs torn up and in no condition to escape.
The swift counter-attack scatters those who would assault the Waffle House settlement. Soon, the night is calm (except for those with crippled legs who are still screaming in pain).

"Drop your weapons and surrender now!" Shouts Sean to the wounded attackers. "Bart, you now go out to collect the bodies and their stuff. Richard and I will cover you, and Tariq will stand ready with more light. We need some live ones and all the guns to prevent them from being picked up by the buggers." Then Sean looks at how his order is implemented. Those not looking like they are all ready to surrender will be shot through their other limbs (e.g. right arm would be a logical next step against anyone still clutching a weapon). "Anyone to help him?" Asks Sean of the Waffle House men when Bart moves out.

The crippled mutants all refuse to surrender and keep their weapons close.
Bart the hunter is ready to go out and take the mutants captive, but he wants them unable to fight back first. He asks Sean to shoot them again.
The Waffle House security forces will aid Bart in rounding up the mutants who are still alive, once they are more thoroughly disabled.

Sean responds to their defiance by reloading his gun, and then sniping their gun arms. One shot per mutant, and he instantly wrecks the targeted limbs without a prayer.

With that out of the way, Bart and the Waffle House forces head out to take them captive.

15 minutes later, seven attackers have been tied up and dragged back inside, to be put in cells and interrogated.

The next thing to sort out was the loot. Assuming there is an understanding that this time it's the party's turn to get it, Sean would like everything collected and accounted for. He also collects empty casings from both his and Richard's shots. He asks Waffle House men if they would like to have more guns that the group has just captured and, if they do, whether they feel inclined to trade for all this loot wholesale at par without cherry-picking for anything and without any side getting an advantage.

The attackers in total have 10 sets of improvised leather armor, six single shotguns, 4 axes, six cigarette lighters, 3 big clubs, 3 unlit Molotov cocktails, and 12 shotgun slugs. Some of the loot was destroyed by Tariq's explosives, mostly the armor.

The Waffle House people would like the exiles to let them have it all. But they are willing to buy the exiles' share (especially the guns and ammo) with bottles of water and food rations, exact fair value.

The captives will need medical treatment and rest before they can be questioned harshly without killing them.

Assuming that the listed loot is from the party's kills and that Waffle House guys, having two good enough rifles, did or did not kill something to be looted exclusively by them, the loot would amount to half a ton of food. Sean takes preferably rusk, groat, and anything else that is not 100% meat. If there is an option to make a delivery to Radar Base, he would be willing to take less.

Sean does not expend anything medical on the captured types. He's perfectly fine with letting them heal by themselves. At least, that would not cost any food anyone. He asks Richard to make two radio calls in the morning: one with the Funny Platoon and one with Vermont Rangers HQ. The talk in both cases should be about...
    1. The incidents themselves (we have them informed).
    2. The fact that we got seven specimen captured (and whether there is a market or otherwise a demand for live ones, which seem to have a very funny biology and might know this or that).
    3. Anything they want to say or ask w.r.t. the above.

    Spoiler

I mean, I did not notice them killing anything at night and now they want a half? That's not reasonable after we gave them all from the day-time attack. They can take 100% of their kills though.

The Waffle House guards grumble, but concede the point. The exiles can take all of the loot that they do not want to exchange for water and food.
The exiles turn in for the night, planning to make radio calls tomorrow.
(OC: Cross off the water and food consumed if you have not already.)

    DAY 56

The next day, Richard gets on the horn.
The seven captured mutants pique interest - both groups want to know where exactly the mutants are coming from. Who made them? How? If the exiles could find out, they'd like to know. Both the Funny Platoon and the Rangers report that various settlements have come under attack by these mutants more and more in the past week. They are worried that it all means something...

Having learned that the supply of the mutants is much more plentiful than desired, and growing fast, Sean decides to leave the captured lot in care of Waffle House people. He will not not bother transporting them anywhere else under these circumstances, but maybe will interrogate them later on.

When everyone is ready, Sean leads the group consisting of him, the dogs and the pickup with the rest outside the perimeter. He tries to make sense of all those tracks:
    1. Where did they come from
    2. Where did the survivors go
    3. How many they were on both counts

Then he follows the mutants back whence they came from, not chasing those who have escaped.

The attackers from last night are gone. They had enough punishment.

The attackers originally came from the direction of the town Springfield - they were about 40 men strong. He thinks the routed attackers retreated back that way, too.

Sean finds the tracks of about four to six men who ran from the area through the wilderness. He can follow them without much difficulty. The trail to Springfield is probably 350 meters long. Springfield is a ruined town that scavengers in the region go to get diseased, plunder prepper stashes, hide away from enemies, and rob each other. It is not a safe place.

Sean explains his findings and asks if the party is willing to take the risks of following the mutants through Springfield. Sean personally is. If more than one person agrees, Sean proposes we leave the pickup in the garage and follow through the town on foot. We can always return for the car if we find that the tracks exit the town somewhere.

The exiles set for Springfield, trying to follow the tracks as closely as they can.

It takes a hour of hiking past the town outskirts and through the overgrowth and side roads before they arrive at a large ruined building in the town. The exiles do not know what the structure was supposed to be in the Old World, but they can tell this place has had a few cycles of occupation as a encampment for various drifters and gangs. It looks empty now.

The ruin is three stories high, a city block of square area, fairly high stone walls around the building, a securely locked gate, steel covered windows, barricaded doors, and several entrances inside the walls.

Getting in may take some effort...

Sean comes closer to examine the gate and, particularly, the way they are locked. He looks if it is locked from the inside or from the outside, if there is a way to get in using bolt cutters or bullets to destroy any part of the locking system. He also tries to estimate the amount of traffic passing recently through this gate. He tries to peek through to see to which door the traffic goes on the other side and if that way appears to be watched by any person or camera.

The gate has been locked from the inside. It is a decent padlock with thick metal chains. Bolt cutters might work on the chains, but it would be difficult.

    (OC: -3 Lockpicking.)

Not much traffic around the gate - dust and debris has gathered, no recent footprints. The doors to the inside of the building have some foot traffic, but they do not lead to the gate.

No lookouts or cameras are around the building.

As Sean gives up on the lock, he hear some activity around the wall's corner.

He walks around to investigate, to see a man wrapped in black leathers (just the mutants at the Waffle House...) pointing a single shotgun at him!

(OC: An attack by a shotgunner. Skill 13 - 3 Range...)

Sean ducks back around the corner as the enemy fires his gun at him! Birds sitting on the trees nearby scatter in panic as the loud bang shatters the quiet!

Combat starts. The enemy has Basic Speed 5.50, I believe Sean goes first?
