Keep forgetting how the game works, Juli, and you’ll get yourself killed eventually, Juli mentally scolds herself. To be fair, it had worked in her favor this time, but that wouldn’t always be the case— she’d already forgotten about needing a power point to retain psionic focus, after all. She attempts to whack the creature over the spine again.

Aw, ****. This is *not* good. Juli weighed her options, none of which were appealing. So, I’m at 0. I can try to run, but if that thing chases me I’m as good as dead. If I attack again, even if I kill it, I’ll drop to -1. That other player is probably too far away to hear me, even if I shout. Whatever “resilience” is, it didn’t kick in when I dropped to 0, but maybe it’s some sort of mini-Diehard effect? It at least sounds like it would be some sort of defensive ability.

Of course, I didn’t put even a single point into Autohypnosis, so I can’t stabilize myself. Nice forethought, dummy.

Gods, this is embarrassing. And this is the creature that I got the jump on... I guess I’ll try to hit it and hope for the best. Game, if you’d ever like to tell me what Resilience is, now would be a great time.

Blackness seeps into the corner of your vision as your head swims, the internal bleeding from repeated beatings catches up with you, and you collapse to the ground. An unknown time later, you have a sense of consciousness as a notification fills the entirety of your senses.

YOU HAVE DIED

With a gasp, you jerk back into wakefulness, laying in the same location and position in which you first came to this world.

A new notification appears floating before you.

Wow, I messed that up. Smooth going, Juli. It’ll be a great story to tell your friends sometime. “Yeah, I made a new character in a videogame and I got headbutted to death by a rabbit on steroids!” Just great.

Juli slowly rises to her feet, whereupon she notices the new notification. “Ugh! Really? I was like 2 encounters away from leveling!” A small idea suddenly flashes through her mind. Maybe the game replenished her power points on respawn? She quickly checks her sheet to see whether that’s the case.

Your hit points are full, and your power points are indeed restored. However, the penalty to Int from death means you won't be manifesting any 1st-level powers for the next 12 hours. That's probably for the best though, as you won't burn them all and then charge straight into battle.

Oh. You're also naked.

“This game won’t even let me keep my clothes?!”

After sipping some of the sacred water to refresh the EXP bonus, and taking a moment to calm herself down and gain psionic focus, Juli sets off in search of more rabbits. At this point, she’s not incredibly embarrassed about going around with no clothes— after all, she is a dragon-person and not a human, and there’s almost no one around anyways. Still, she thinks, I should probably make some sort of loincloth out of those rabbits I collected earlier— I don’t want to walk into town nude.

Upon finding a group of rabbits, Juli will first fire off an Energy Splash, and then follow up with a charge when possible. If she hears even the smallest noise of a not-rabbit, she is running away as fast as possible. After each fight, she meditates to regain psionic focus before looking for more rabbits.

Juli wants to shout at herself. She touches the Hearthstone, and assuming that action proceeds as it did earlier, goes on her rabbit-slaughtering journey after it lights up. As she does so, she grumbles something about how this stupid game won’t even let her keep the stuff that she intentionally left in her spawn.

Alright, so I can only be rezz’ed once per 12 hours. Fine. I’ll just play this a lot more carefully than I was earlier.

Truthfully, the message did worry Juli. However, the shame that she’d feel when she would have to walk up to the other player, completely naked, and tell them that not only did she not level up, but that she also died to what is likely one of the easiest enemies in the game? So much worse than death in a videogame.

She goes off in search of rabbits.

Very funny, game. As far as I know, that gown of mine is now stomach lining for that creature. It looked big enough to eat me, and mean enough to actually do it, too. I’ll look for it later.

Juli has had enough. At this point, the game is practically taunting her with these stupid, always-hitting, max-damage-dealing beefed up bunnies. Forgoing her earlier plan of “run away”, she instead decides to do the opposite. She raises her tail and attempts to slam it down as hard as possible on the not-rabbit’s neck.

Juli took several deep breaths to calm herself down, but a tinge of anxiety remained. As much as she was generally enjoying herself, this was a very different game than what she had first purchased. Everything felt just a little too real, and she was just a little too powerless to defend herself against even some of the easiest enemies. At least, she assumed that they were meant to be easy. Dying hadn’t been fun either. What would happen if she died while the timer was still running down, or worse, if the hearthstone had a limited number of uses? Juli shuddered. She would rather not find out the hard way. Above all, though, was the fact that this new version of the game wouldn’t tell her anything. In the normal version, you could just tap anything on your character sheet, and you’d get a pop-up explaining the thing’s purpose, how to use it, and everything else you would ever need to know about a plain silk shirt, for example. Here, though, the motto of the game seemed to be “mess around and find out”, which Juli did not like.

Still, there were things to do, and Juli often found that the easiest way to push negative thoughts out of her mind was to focus on something else. And so, she continued on, looking for the next unfortunate group of rabbits that would cross her path.

Juli had *really* hoped to be done with monster-hunting by sunset. It was still possible, maybe, but she’d have to go fast. She charges the nearest group of rabbits, hoping to score a kill and follow it up with an AoO as the rabbits flee.
