    Atronia and Caex, each crush one of the bony attackers. Your position at the intersection doesn't seem optimal. The wider room gives substantial area where the skeletons can gather. The halberdiers can strike you from afar without approaching. More of the skeletons keep coming in and take position near to you. Again, three more skeletons wander in from the side tunnels raising their numbers to eight.

    This turn almost all the skeletons miss but one of them miraculously manages to strike Atronia with it's halberd. [6 slashing]. The magics that protect Atronia turn the likely critical hit into a normal one.

    If you guys want to describe movements for your previous turn before going into the next one, I'm absolutely ok with it. Even if this battle is pretty much a stream of skeletons, there are still tactical considerations, (more than what may seem self-evident).

    Can I go past the skeletons, or am I stuck going back the way we came?

    By the end of Chazwick's previous turn he's cunningly pushed his way through the line of skeletons and moved into the large room at the end of the corridor.

    On the walls of this room there's stone reliefs of dwarven and catfolk faces. The faces have been made angular and at various points of the reliefs there's features that suggest that the original face was supposed to be of stone as well. There's embedded crystals at weird spots, engraved patterns that resemble another type of stone and other features.

    At the end of the room you can barely see an object on the wall that seems to be the source of all the misty smoke. Because it's far and covered by the smoke you can't yet see what it actually is.

    On the floor around said object are three concentric half circles covered in magic symbols. There's a large number of eggshells and kitten skeletons around these circles suggesting even to the uneducated in arcane that whatever they were casting wasn't nice.

    Under the smoking object there's a small pile of items including a large key, the tip of a spear, a medallion and a crystal pair of shoes.

    Are there any handy windows I can toss the smoking object through if I pick it up?

    (I feel like the answer is to smash it, but I'm afraid of what'll happen if I do that and I'm wrong.)

    No windows. Place is underground. There does seem to be a crack in the ceiling. One can barely see a small line of light if one looks at the right spot in the ceiling but it's not something one could throw the object through. The size of the object seems to be about 2'x2'.

    Maria is one of the most passive cautious people Chazwick knows. She tends to know say little and do less. She's particularly cautious on any situation that reflects on her.

    How do you think I would know an object buried in a catacomb that I don't see?

    You can get to it in a turn and still act. As you move a little closer you observe that the object is a black, slightly reflecting plate, kind of like a mirror. It has a pale rim that vaguelly seems to be the same material as the soul crystal you saw previously.

    Don't have a hand-axe... do have a dagger.

    (1d20+5)[14] to throw a dagger at the mirror-thingy.
    (1d4+3)[6] for damage... although I'm hoping knocking the mirror over breaks it.

    Chazwick tosses a dagger at the mirror. The dagger creates a small crack in the surface of the dark object but there's no other discernible effect.
    The mist is still coming.

    As Chazwick spends some time in the room he notices that the mist actually changes colour as it crosses the ritual area. The mirror creates a solid black smoke that turns misty, grey and swirly as it crosses the half circles.

    Atronia lets out a grunt of pain as a blade gets partially past her armor and continues to try and smash skeletons, a bit worried she's going to be completely surrounded in short order but not quite sure what else she can do that wouldn't leave the others in a much more dire position.

    Atronia destroys one of the skeletons.

    Caex beats down two more, including the one previously weakened by Maria. One of these happens to be one of the halberdiers.

    Three more skeletons clatter in to replace the ones that have collapsed. Already there's quite a sizable group of bones on the floor of the hall.

    You can also see that behind the skeletons that just came in is a different kind of skeleton. In life it must have been an ogre or a gigantic monkey. It's not carrying weapons but by the size of it's hands it probably doesn't need any.

    All the skeletons miss with their attacks.

    Chazwick takes a deep breath and rushes towards the mirror with his rapier, trying to give it a much bigger scratch.

    If the kitten skeletons don't get up and stop me, then...

    Chazwick walks to the black plate and makes a much larger cut into it's surface. He suspects that one more blow will split the item. The item seems to be an obsidian mirror.

    As Chazwick comes close to the object he feels a sense of relief as he steps over the ritual halfcircles in the ground. On the other side of the markings and kitten skeletons he feels a sense of improvement in his mental faculties. Everything seems clearer and... less scary.

    You suddenly remember uncle Zain having sometimes used an obsidian mirror. He said they were traditional. Something related to the Baroness's side of the family's heritage. They never smoked though.

    The ritual area itself... the markings are made on the floor with wax. There's three concentric half-circles. There's nine dead baby animals, either kittens or eggs on the circles. There's a sentence written in wax, in some language unknown to you, on each line of ritual markings.

    Can that free item interaction be used to kick the nearest kitten skeleton out of the ritual area and see if that does anything to help Chazwick's family and friends?

    And does the smoke give Chazwick enough cover to use that bonus action to Hide?

    Caex misses her blows, already hoping for an end to the flood of skeletons.

    Atronia crushes one of the halberdier skeletons.

    Maria manages to hit one of the skeletons in a weak spot and also makes one collapse.

    Four of the skeletons seek to strike Caex or Atronia, all failing. Another two skeletons lumber into the room. The large monkey skeleton seems kind of threatening though. It lunges at Atronia to grapple.

    Chazwick strikes the obsidian mirror and it splits.

    Immediately the mist stops forming.

    Chazwick feels a sense of loss and he becomes confused for a round, doing nothing.

    Meanwhile in the corridor, the skeletons collapse into piles of bones.

    Maria slow presses her hand into a fist and pumps it gently which is as much positive emotion as you've seen her show.

    Only the four of you move in the catacomb now. The mist dissipates rapidly and completely.

    Chazwick notices that the half-circle ritual area still makes him feel terribly ill but moving to either side of the kitten skeletons releases the sensation immediately.
