Senna pauses for more than just a short while. Vala can see her mind racing, combining several ideas and eventualities. So here are the facts. Can I trust in your confidence? Our small group, including our sister Vyvian and Aintas; we are adopted. I do not know if at least the human side of our heritages are linked together, but Gorion was our adoptive father. Ever since we left Candlekeep, we share terrible nightmares, dreams of temptation, of power, of death. I don't know if Father made powerful enemies that cursed the ones he loved, but I know answers lie with the armored figure and the Kara-Turian cleric that killed him. But I fear something deeper, something more primordial courses through our veins. There is no way even an avatar of a deity could curse a group this large.

What you felt is this ... I don't even know what. It regularly calls to us. Wants us to grip power, to subjugate our peers, to exert dominance.
Senna pauses, choosing her words carefully, as she felt incredibly uncomfortable, almost blasphemous. Ever since these dreams I can command others. In a power that emulates that of my patron deity. I dare not say it, but I can grant myself divine power, or at least a facsimile of it. It is less obvious for the others, no doubt colored by their individual souls.

Senna seems almost panicked. Vala, I can cast divine magic. No devotion or prayer necessary. This is...unnatural. She takes a deep breath. And you, your powers seem similar. I wanted to do this later when we were less inclined to fight on a daily basis, but I assume there will be no such day in the next few days. I will plead Deneir for a divination revealing our true selves tomorrow. One that reveals our souls, and whether they are good or evil. Will the result color your opinion of us?

Vala listens carefully to Senna's words, clearly taking them in, but not giving away her own feelings. She's impassive but attentive, almost as if she's worried about conveying too much or too little all at once. "I try not to judge people on what they are," she says finally, perhaps conscious of her word choice more than normal after her (perceived) misstep with Caelyn, "It's what we do that's important, more than where we came from. Whatever this...thing that you've all got is, whatever powers it's giving you, it's how you use them. Same as me."

She pauses, clearly thoughtful. "Not to say I'm not curious! I do want to know more. I mean, who wouldn't, right? But I just don't think it's the be-all and end-all of it. If it turns out you're secretly all demon princes and princesses in disguise then it's still probably fine as long as you're doing the right things." After saying it out loud though she does tilt her head a little, and a touch more hestitantly adds "Probably." a second time.

Ah well, I would like to know if someone replaced my siblings for demonic infiltrators. I bet it would have been that incessant imp, with her permanent side ventures. Senna says thinking - no, knowing - that Grepha's dabbling was the very least of their worries.

Just so you know, it may the case that Caelyn sees more in you than just a comrades at arms. The cleric inches closer, whispering in Vala's ear without touching her. But if she finds out, I told you I think she will burn me alive. Senna lays a single finger onto her lips, swearing Vala into secrecy.

Now would you be so kind as to escort me to the fireplace? The lizard is best suited as a guard, he already ate and he dislikes my company anyhow. Besides I am not even sure I would create something edible from that.

"Well if it helps any I don't think you're all demons or devils. You don't 'feel' like Grepha, at least." Vala offers, a weary half-smile crossing her face. She takes the mushrooms into her arms, exceptionally careful not to repeat the skintouch that has already caused the drama.

When the pair pass J.J., he makes little effort to hide his near-hatred for Senna. His eyes bulge as you approach, but Vala carefully places herself between the two at odds with each other and nothing comes of it. The lizardfolk is left watching over the horse and cart alone (and the surrounding areas) alone. Not that Rosc Roche seems bothered at all, seemingly happy to relax and chew grass until someone comes to move him.

Senna and Vala both find the card game continuing to progress apace. Your chef-singer gives a brief introduction of "Vala, it's nice to meet you,". Gazgazgaz gives barely an eyeflicker of acknowledgement, just a tut of annoyance as he continues to stare at his cards, deep in thought. Bula offers a nod and Oke a small wave.

She stops to watch the card game for a few moments before pressing onward. She passes Vala and wordlessly drops a bundle of chives next to her chef's kit before moving onward to Senna. Blood moss for wounds, some willow bark for pain, and a little bit of hasril root for broken bones. This should help round out our supplies for a while, yes?

This time around, when something's actually on the line, the party performs a little less well at cards. Though Gazgazgaz flounders - perhaps due to his lack of care - both Bula and Oke's hands sufficiently dominate Sam and Melian's, with Bula ultimately winning the hand. "Hard to read a poker face when you can't see it, eh?" the ever-smiling man offers good naturedly, clapping Bula's shoulder with a hearty palm, though he pulls it back a little more tenderly afterwards. Full slapping thick metal plates evidently not the wisest choice he'd ever made. Bula grunts, and her dutiful translator continues. "The truth she wants to hear from you is 'do you have any persistent or underlying health conditions?'" He pauses, perhaps processing the question in full after saying it out loud, before shrugging. "Well not what I'd have asked but she won not me."

Face mirroring Oke's befuddlement, Sam quirks one of his brow ridges at Bula's strange question. "Practical question, huh? Hm," he leans back on his improvised seat, folding one leg over the other and scratching his chin with a claw. "Used to have a lisp when I was younger, but I got over that so it doesn't really count..." his claw pauses and then shoots up. "Oh. I'm allergic to dogs. Not cats though. Dog fur just gives me an awful scale itch."

"Well as long as you don't bed with Marie you should be fine," Oke nods, apparently satisfied with the response. Bula grunts, pointing upwards where the setting sun has now truly dipped below the hill to your left. "Yeah it's probably about time we turn in for the night if we're going to be up bright and early in the morning," he says with a yawn that you can't be entirely sure is theatrical or real. Senna summons Glyph, her calico cat familiar, from inside her bag as not to draw much attention. Clumsily, the cat falls out of the bag, with a big clang, strewing Senna's magical bells onto the floor. The cat gracefully jumps out of the way, perched upon a hill of rubble, judging her owner from afar. As Senna tries to ring a bell mundanely to attract her cat, both the cat and the bell seem to punish her tries with disinterest. The bell falls almost silent, and the cat sits there like generations of cats before her. Watching, with seeming disdain for her bumbling human.

Senna watches the camp. The card game she was no part of. The cook that is afraid to touch her family, the paranoid lizardman. Her silent sister droning on about dragon chess. And Caelyn, who was out there, a bit confused, but hopefully safe. Then her vision turned to two books. Herbalism books from Thalantyr. She completely forgot about it. Enthralled by the guide to the wildlife, she quickly recognizes a few flowers around her, even if those were of particularly little use now.

"I can take first watch with J.J. I think Senna would sleep a little better," Sam says candidly, glancing over at the lizardman's watch post. He gathers up the cards in the aftermath of their game and slots them back into their pouch, getting up from the rock he'd been sitting on to stretch his legs. "Don't you worry, I'll be ready for tomorrow," he assures.

J.J. proves a less than talkative watch companion for Sam, perhaps antsy over the admittance that Sam is likewise a spellcaster, and their watch proceeds quietly with any attempts at pleasant talk rebuffed. He does, at least, offer begrudging help in unhooking the cart from Rosc Roche so the horse can be lead into the building for rest rather than having to stand outside. Perhaps if only so it's less for him to watch in the night. You can't say the night passes quietly - even slightly cut off by walls and distance the sounds of nocturnal animals and other creatures is loud and pervasive. The wind whistles through gaps in the ruined stonework, creating an ominous melody.

You take separate sides of the ruins for rest, perhaps out of consideration for allergies but also just to play it safe given the brief time you've known each other.

The next morning is another one of obnoxious heat, not dissimilar to that of a few days ago. Those already awake find the steady increase stifling, while those still safely inside their bedrolls wake up to a deluge of sweat. There's no overhanging bits or pieces in the ruins so aiming for whatever shade you can get from the east-rising sun is your best bet, for now at least.

When you're all gathered for a breakfast cooked up by Vala on your recently acquired Hot Obelisk (bacon, bread, cheese), Okethar is the first to speak up, in between grateful bites of food. "Bula and I were talking last night - no, no, it's true," he says with a chuckle at any skepticism of Bula talking, "and given the apparent prevalence for magic in your group we thought it might be a good idea if J.J. sits out this little excursion. He can stay up top and make sure nothing untoward follows us down, keep an eye on your horse, and cuts down the risk of uh...friendly fire, so to speak." J.J. nods in agreement, apparently having been informed of this previously. "It might be a bit cramped as it is with so many of us, but are there any objections?"

Senna moans under the oppressive summer heat. The girl was never one to venture out under the summer's glaring face, preferring to study her books in the shade. To make matters worse, some of the potion extraction was done over the fire, requiring both sisters to stay close. Some clerics managed to summon water as a cantrip, and she reminds herself to read up on it again. She was this close to following Auril for a soft breeze of winter air and some icy water.

Well, to focus on his hostility of yesterday, can we trust him not to eat our horse? He devoured a raw rabbit yesterday, and I have only read up on reptiles, but not lizard men, but don't they tend to gorge on food sources if they are available?

I am fine with that, if he does not touch Rosc Roche. But the ultimate decision should lie with Caelyn. Technically it is her horse.

Without comment she commands Glyph to slip away. The familiar should keep tabs on the superstitious lizardman.

Having skipped the interior of the bedroll and just slept in the open night air, Sam is a little less sweltering in the morning - or maybe it's the fire dragon ancestry. Either way, he stretches and yawns, making his way over to Vala's breakfast buffet. "Anybody ever tell you you're the best to travel with?" he asks in rhetorical compliment, plucking a piece of hot bacon to chew on.

Heaving a heavy sigh at Senna's continued antagonism, he looks up from his seat and asks, "Have you considered not racially profiling someone, lecturing them about things you don't know **** about, and then labeling them the bad guy for being pissed off at you for it?" His voice drips with deadpan hostility.

Suffering under the summer heat, Senna adds an already tired: It was not my intention to antagonize him, neither to make him fearful of magic. I am sure he has his reasons, and I would love to have time to make him trust in it again, but what I have seen of him, and what he has seen of me creates a big rift between our world views. Thus I thank him and you for coming to this sensible conclusion for all.

There's a sly grin of amusement on Gazgazgaz's face as he watches the siblings bicker, though he says nothing. "It'ssss a horsssse." J.J. hisses out, his tone unreadable, but from the words perhaps patronising. "They're sssimple to take care of." "Even still if there's sssomething specific," Oke jumps in, a playful rib on J.J. in the process in his own effort to bring things back to a normal level - or at least deflect the antagonism slightly, "I'm sure you would like to know in advance rather than be blindsided later. Please do" The lizardfolk glares at Oke but eventually he concedes, nodding at his team mate and then Caelyn in turn, though her nod is less friendly.

"Leaving a familiar on the surface seems a sound plan, and I'm sure it will be of use. Now, with that little concern out of the way, are there any other preparations that we need to make or shall we head down? After finishing our food, of course." He gives a winning smile at Vala, though if she notices she doesn't acknowledge it, still busying herself with cleaning her cooking tools after use. Not that it seems to deflate the handsome man at all. Perhaps he's used to rejection.

Senna smiles from ear to ear hearing her sister's almost obsession with the horse. Sometimes she can be adorable.

I do have an incantation I want to perform, but in respect to JJ, I will do so in his absence. Is everyone else okay with a simple divination concerning those of the Upper and Lower planes? I have a hunch that concerns my family's nightmares and Vala's nature as well. It reveals visitors from all planes as well as holy and unholy places, but that is not my focus today.

J.J. gives the moment of 'handover' a lot less weight than Caelyn does, but at the very least he seems to have listened and acknowledged the situation, nodding along with her concerns and making the occasional noise of agreement. It might almost be reminiscent of an adult humouring a child, though how old J.J. is exactly isn't exactly clear to you. He could be younger than you, for all you know, though it seems less likely. Rosc Roche, at least, seems unconcerned about being in the hands (figuratively) of the lizardman. Perhaps he's slowly growing used to the strange occurrences of the group.

To Senna's question Oke takes a short glance-poll of his compatriots and no objections are heard or made, so he nods, "That seems fine, we should probably be downstairs when we do it though, make sure he doesn't get any wrong ideas. Bula?" At Okethar's request, the commander of the small treasure hunting group points you towards a small trap door in the ruins, the kind that would be easily concealed by a carpet in less ruinous times. The wooden door lays shut, though the thick iron lock has clearly been broken by force, and is easily opened by the armoured enigma. Below leads into darkness down a small set of stairs. Without commenting further she steps down below, closely followed by Vala, and then the rest of you. Gazgazgaz, riding atop Marie, brings up the rear.

The stone stairs are clearly professional work, and blocked off from the elements above seem barely damaged by time. Layers of dust lie atop them though there are spots where the dust has been disturbed prior to your passing. You circle back back on yourself thrice before emerging into a cellar room. Though none of the treasure hunters seem to have difficulty navigating the darkness, Bula does light a torch held in a sconce, bringing light and colour to your eyes. The room is perhaps 20' wide, and 50' long, stretching to your left and right. Four exits - two to the south ahead of you, one to the east (your left) and one to the west (your right). Each one is blocked by a sturdy looking wooden door with a metal frame, though the door to the east is slightly ajar.

The room itself is likewise covered in dust and spiderwebs. A few racks of weapons - rusted swords, spears and axes - sit in the northeast corner. If the treasure hunters cared for them it doesn't show, as they appear to remain undisturbed. There's a wooden desk between the two south exits, atop of which is an old faded parchment map of the woods. Most of the details have been lost, and those that haven't been are likely significantly out of date by this point. A few tomes are lined up beside the map with such interesting titles as History of Shadowdale, Vol IX, Book of King Eleren II, and Andras, the Grey Knight's Story indicating they're historical texts and little more. The first two of which are entirely common, and have at least three copies apiece in Candlekeep that you're aware of.

"We went left our last time here, didn't see much of value to take from this room at least." He doesn't actively move towards it though, apparently happy to give you time to poke around - and for Senna to cast her spell.

Before we proceed, if you stay still please. Senna breathes in, finally having enough time to cast a spell properly and enjoy it.

Senna's eyes and mind alight with the spellcast. If she hoped for any revelations of what beyond the cellar room you stand in however she's let down, for there are none, either because of the earth and stone in the way or they simply aren't there. Gazgazgaz and Bula provoke no reaction from the spell, unaffected and easily overlooked. Okethar doesn't give any major reaction, though the thin golden outline surrounding his form marks him as having at least some celestial blood. It's barely visible however, so whatever his heritage he's likely generations removed from any planar parentage.

While you and your siblings are all undoubtedly mortal, the spell's visuals are impossible to miss. It looks almost as if holes had been hollowed out of your chests, roughly in the place of your hearts, in place of flesh, clothes and armour. The hole is filled not with empty air, but a black swirling cloud that seems to have a depth far beyond your now-vanished 'backs', yet looking at your siblings from behind finds nothing there but their normal physicality. The void can only be perceived from the front. Sam's is the only one of yours that differs clearly and even then it's only slight. Fiery red edges border his 'void', edging inside it like cracks in stonework filled with molten flame. Their intrusion isn't deep, however, and the darkness is still overpowering any hellish gains. Whether a trick of perspective and the mind or reality however, your void appears to be slightly larger than the others.

Finally, Vala gleams with celestial light, though she still detects as human. With your eyes adapted to the spell you can see her gifts on full display even without her invoking them actively – the flower crown with its perpetually falling petals, the glow of inner power. It's her 'true self', it seems, when not restrained and held back.

As the situation is mostly resolved, Sam drops it and finishes his breakfast in silence, then gets up to follow the others down. His eyes adjust to the darkness with relative ease, everything beyond the torchlight seen in a greyscale, as if all the color had been sapped out. Acknowledging Oke's report with a nod and a smile that - like Oke's - doesn't seem to meet his eyes. The dragonborn's mood is clearly a little strained as he leans against the wall, waiting for Senna to finish.

"If you check to the left, should we check to the right next? Straight ahead is usually where the important stuff is, so we want to check the rest first, save the best for last kinda thing. Right?" he suggests.

As Senna looks around, her illuminated eyes widen in fear. She looks at herself, then at everyone else, then at herself again. I...I think this stuff is meant to be discussed later. Not what I expected. Not at all.

She coughs uncomfortably, then suggests the following. Assuming the rooms are too small for tactical maneuvers, should we split into two for the checks of the front rooms?

"There's a fire trap on the left side that we only have enough alchemy juice to cross...twice?" Okethar looks to Gazgazgaz for confirmation. The goblin briefly verifies some potions in his satchel and nods in the affirmative. "So really we should all be going that path together. But if you think the other areas are worth hitting first," his and Bula's eyes meet, a silent conversation (moreso than usual for Bula) playing out between the two of them, "then that should be fine too?"

Caelee follows the adventurers and her family down into the cellar room, Osmadi's staff in one hand and her scimitar close to her hip. Well atleast it will be cooler down here. I know the heat bothers some of you... She listens as the others converse, content to let her other siblings handle the necessary team work between the two groups, until Senna proposes splitting up. We came down here because help was needed in this task, Senna. I don't think dividing our efforts would be wise. I support Oke's path of continuing to the left, along the path they have already started to explore. If they already know the initial dangers, then we can use their knowledge to begin to acclimatize ourselves to this place and it's wiles.

"Well, if Gaz would use up all his alchemy juice on the one trap maybe we should start on the right side and stick together then. And if we have enough leftover we can scoot through the trap and check out more of the left side?" Sam suggests. "Who knows, maybe we'll find something we can use to get past the trap, too."

I assume the trapped side is the more valuable one, so we should hit that first? I feel it makes little difference what we encounter first. Plus knowledge is good in a dungeon we have not seen previously. Sam's logic is sound too. Senna looks at Melian who shrugs. Well, to show our new friends their vote is welcome with us, we should go left. Is that okay with you Sam?

Senna snaps with her fingers making her holy symbol glow a shining white. Just so you know, I am a glyphscribe of Deneir, so I would appreciate a holler if you find something interesting to read or artwork, please tell me. She is already drawn to the book shelves, with little regard for her own safety.

Senna picks up a copy of every book and carefully picks up the olden map as well. I hope they are not too large. But I assume mundane texts were written on small parchments to save up on paper.
