Riverside 21: Older than Arkh

"Very well." Turge will lead them first to the security room and let Fayyaad head inside while the orc takes Noc to the crime scene.

Inside is a smallish room, made to feel more cramped by the presence of a good sized centauress, manning the station. There are several monitors showing off lots of different parts of the museum, inside and out, covering all the outside walls, most of the halls, and each of the rooms. Obviously too many for one person to watch all at once, but not so many that movement wouldn't be noticed. In fact Fayyaad can easily see Noc and Turge as they head to the back storeroom.

Eudyne Nikania, meanwhile, watches him with an open scowl. "MERC, I presume?"

Noc gets led to a different room. This one, notably, has a lock that's required to be opened in order to get past the door. Once inside, Turge tells Noc to hold up as he turns around to punch in some numbers at the panel just within. "This turns off the infrared lasers that would trip the alarm. Logs each time it's used." Indeed, there is quite a number of laser sensors littered along the walls and ceiling.

Within is a storage area that could be better lit, and a small ventilation grate provides little relief to the stuffiness of the room. There are a number of wooden crates behind enclosed mesh fencing, a few workbenches towards the middle that look to be used often enough for museum purposes, and finally a small number of glass cases. No doubt these are extra cases for when exhibits need to be changed, but there are a few objects within, held for convenience for when brought to the workbenches frequently. One case in particular, easily seen from where they enter seems to have been where the sword was held. Based both on size and the large hole cut in the side, where someone could have reached in, grabbed the handle and pulled it out. The case itself has a lock, which appears to still be intact.

She's not happy to see him. That's not really a surprise. No doubt the staff aren't too happy about being de facto suspects in this case, or to have mercenaries poking around their workplace. Still, he has a job to do.

"Yes. Fayyaad ibn-Haashid al-Zafar," he introduces himself politely. "I have been informed that the security footage from the day of the theft is missing. Do you know why that is?"

Dena nods as she takes and opens a bottle of water and pours it into a glass which she then walks over to hand to Korrina. "Yep, they're not paying us that much." Her movements are particularly calm and deliberate, her snakes resting calmly on her head, as she didn't want to provoke her visitor any further.
She sits down and folds her hands together on the desk. "But it of course depends on what you want to hire us for."

[MERC Office]

"I see. Well let me explain what I'm looking for." Korrina explains calmly. "I'm ultimately after information. First, though, my colleague is nearby, but I need her brought into the building covertly. Also, we were never here. Does that sound reasonable?"

[Suncrest Manor]

It should be noted that the baby is actually wearing a suspiciously new and modern diaper (hence why their gender isn't immidiately obvious). Nadia as a mother can tell that it's of a local brand so it was likely aquired within Riverside and that it must have been changed recently.
"Looks like someone has taken care of it at least." Irena remarks while she's still staring at the baby. "Surely it can't have been those rat-creatures, right...? Any baby they took care of I'm not sure I want anything to do with. They were creepy as ****, and they were just killing themselves. Definitely something more going on."

[Suncrest Manor]

"I'm really not sure. That place was a ruin. It doesn't really make sense... But in any case, they need someone to take care of them. I was going to get cleaned up and maybe go to the cathedral." Nadia says. Still so much to do, and she looks exhausted.

"Afraid I'm going to need some more information before I make a promise like that. You're at least going to have to tell me who this 'colleague' of yours is if you're asking us to take her here in a covert manner. Considering that's a need you have, we might already be putting ourselves at a lot of risk just by inviting you inside. I'm not going to arrest you but I need to consider the safety of the people inside this building. Not to mention the one of our business. Your colleague could be a demon or KABAL member for all I know." Not that she considered that terribly likely.

"Nothing about that made any lick of sense." Irena insists with a dismissive gesture before breaking into a confident smile. "But don't worry, babe. I'll take care of that baby. You still have work and work." As in Nadia's "second job". "So I'll handle it while you get some rest."

[Gullara]

"Do you interrogate all your customers like this?" Korrina frowns. "Last I checked, you allow the public into the building. A demon or Kabal member could walk in the front door, couldn't they?"

[Suncrest Manor]

Nadia smiles. "Okay, let's try to get cleaned up before Eliseo comes wandering around the house. I wouldn't know where to begin explaining this." Nadia hands over the baby to Irena and then heads to the shower . She cleans up as quickly as she can, and she'll won't be too long before she's back in a robe. Irena and the baby need to get clean as well, and she plans to take point helping the latter.

Dena's eyebrow raise. "Alright, let me be plain here then. Since it sounds like this dealing with this associate of yours might go against our law-enforcement contract. If that's true and my people are spotted escorting and dealing with a known criminal our contract would go bye-bye." She raises her finger. "To clarify, I'm not saying that I can't do that for another client but I'm saying that if I'm about to risk the contract that's keeping all these people paid I should at least ask for some mutual trust in exchange. You at least trusting me that I wouldn't just turn over one client to another without a promise. We're professionals here, yeah?"

"Just hide the baby and say we had a bit of 'fun'. That's a near guarantee that he'll never ask about it again." Irena claims, sounding like she's speaking from experience.

Irena will then make sure the darn baby is taken care as Nadia cleans herself up, channeling all her hard earned experience with baby Eliseo. It's a daunting task but someone have to do it.

As Nadia comes down it appears like Irena have somehow managed to change the baby's diaper and they're sleeping peacefully in a baby chair that she must have dragged out from some storage closet. "It's a she." She declares quietly with a glance at Nadia, sitting carefully observing the baby from the other end of the table. "Sorry if I'm not revealing that with enough explosions but I think we've had enough of those for now." She's of course referencing some recent events that caused foundation damage to plenty of buildings in the city. As if the demon invasion and the rat plague hadn't been enough...

Without weapons, what could Seraphina do, anyway? Kick her?

But! And! One point to 'knowing the book'. Seraphina sees that that worked. Something like that must have happened in that woman's backstory, so...well, she's glaf it worked. Meanwhile, she doesn't add anything to that in case it's the wrong thing.

"Yeah, probably...I mean, I'm not that strong but she's pretty strong," Seraphina tells the woman. "I won't do anything weird, promise."

"Me neither!" Karasu pipes up. After a cursory look at them both, she decides they're her best choice in this crazy city where a girl you bullied when you didn't know better, could hold a grudge long enough to become a vampire and aim for you. The fact that vampires were real made it worse.

She begins to lead them to her home on foot, insisting they walk beside her so she can keep an eye on them. "You! Tell me about yourself. I have to make sure." Make sure Seraphina's not a doppelganger, that is. Their similarity's really creepy!

"How would knowing about me help make sure of anything?" Seraphina wonders. Would have nothing to do with a doppelganger.

She walks alongside. Walking next to her makes the most sense, anyway, because walking behind someone is weird.

And she thinks. If she doesn't know what she's trying to 'make sure' of, how is Seraphina supposed to know what she's supposed to talk about? "So, my name's Seraphina, live on the coast by myself, married, no kids...seriously, I don't know what sort of thing you want to 'make sure' of."

That's an entirely fair question on Eudyne's part. Of course, it's not the kind of question MERC is in the business of asking or answering.

"We were hired, so we'll do the job," Fayyaad says laconically. "That's all I need to know on my part. Now, can you show me the security footage immediately preceding the missing part? Just how much of it is missing?" Maybe examining the existing footage can provide some clue as to how it was removed. It's not something he can pass up, anyway.

Dena's eyebrow raise. "Alright, let me be plain here then. Since it sounds like this dealing with this associate of yours might go against our law-enforcement contract. Korrina breathes out a small sigh, but resists the urge to express her displeasure any more overtly. "Fine." As she speaks there's a bit of a stir in the air around her. It catches the locks of her hair slightly before settling again. "I represent the Fourth Tower, my colleague is very recognizable, and your employers are ignorant tyrants. Do you understand now?"

Irena earns herself some mildly amused head shaking, though Nadia is far too tired for banter back and forth tonight. She holds out her arms to take the baby back. "Get yourself cleaned up. I left a bin for your clothes in the bathroom." Those will need some extra cleaning.

Once everyone is clean, Nadia is in the living room, sitting with the baby, who should be done eating by now. "This really takes me back." She comments with an amused smile. "I guess it's like riding a bike. You never really forget."

If Dena's surprised, or was expecting this, she's hiding it well behind a neutral expression. Her sunglasses helping her to mask whatever her reaction is. "Right... I could have done without that last comment, but of course we're ready to extend out an helping hand to those we've had business with before. Consider it an additional favor for the extra work I put your leader through." The gorgon smiles. "So unless you're here to ask us to tear down the 'ignorant tyrants' we can play ball. I mean, there must be a good reason you came to this partifcular office rather than our main one so I'm assuming it has to be a local job." Or simply that Zhareen only thought of this half-baked plan when they were within city limits.

"But first of all, your associate, could you show a photo or give a description of her? Surely it can't be Vax herself." She didn't seem like the type that would just wander into Riverside, but she was easily recongizeable even from a distance.

While Irena is quick to get into the shower she's much less eager to get out of it and takes her sweet time in there.
Once she eventually gets back to the living room she gives the baby another suspicious glance. "I guess so." Irena looks back to Nadia. "Funny, despite being so different this one is just as messy as when the kid was at that age. Babies are no different no matter what species they are I suppose. Any clue what this one is? Looks like a little... bat-goblin." The rat king had killed and reanimated most if not all of the village but had for some reason spared this one.

She sounds too tired to talk, running on pure adrenaline fumes... yet her curiousity forces her to ask more questions.

"It's a nice name, I think." Karasu says, which makes Harriet smile a little.

In fact, even better than not commenting on it would be reassuring that she won't do it, so she does that instead: "Yeah, it's a pretty nice name. But don't worry, I've never even borrowed someone else's name in my life, let alone stolen one. Not really my thing."

"So where are we going, anyway?" Seraphina finally decides to ask. "Is it safe from whatever kind of mafia you ran into earlier?" Clearly Harriet ran into the mafia or something like that, earlier.

She looks like she could be sick.

Eudyne narrows her eyes for a moment, before snorting. "Sure. You won't find anything we haven't found already," She says confidently.

She turns slightly, twisting awkwardly at the torso as she taps at the keyboard. The larger monitor switches over to replay old footage and it takes a moment to load the day in question. When it does, it shows two cameras, each on the opposite side of the storage room from the other. One of them has a clear view of Life's Limit in the case, though it's not centered. The centauress hits play, her back hooves clopping on the floor as she shifts impatiently. A whole lot of nothing happens until about three am, according to the time stamp.

Then it just goes black with the words 'no footage recorded'. Nothing in the room suggests movement or the cameras being cut, but both went down simultaneously without even a trace of static or damage. Whatever happened wasn't so crude as cutting the wires or spray painting the lens. "It stays like this for about fifteen minutes." Fayyaad can make sure, but some fast forwarding later, the cameras do come up about fifteen minutes later. At that time, the case has a fresh, circular cut in its glass and the sword is missing.

"Her wife?" Sounds like Dena has some idea who Zhareen is already. "Right, we'll figure out a way to bring her in discreetly then. You should probably come along too so she doesn't think we're kidnapping her." As presumably Korrina at least tell her where Zhareen is waiting.

Should collecting Zhareen be handwaved or not though?

"Yeah, Malechenar definetely had that covered up. Bunch of bastards, I bet they had something to do with this." But before Irena can get into yet another Malechenar rant there is buzz on her cellphone. Nadia should know the signal, it means that someone is using the buzzer at their gate.
They're not expecting anyone at this hour though and Eliseo would just walk past it.

"What now? We're kinda in the middle of something here..." Irena remarks, her own phone on the table some distance away so she seems to be expecting Nadia to answer this one.
If she does look at her phone and uses the app they use for their security system she can see that a short hooded figure is standing just outside their gate. They're clad in what seems to be a yellow raincoat and are eyeing their sorrundings nervously.

Before she can open her mouth to say anything else, Karasu gently but firmly holds her back. "Calm down, she's only trying to convince you she's not sus. Right?" She flashes the older woman a look.

"... I guess." Harriet decides after a while, then whirls forward and keeps walking. "I'm... not sure. I wanna go home, but instead I find myself heading toward an ex-girlfriend's place. She'll know what to do... we're almost there... unless you have any better ideas."

She starts to hyperventilate all of a sudden. "Oh my god, vampires are real... no, no I don't want to think about that right now..." She forces herself to calm down a little by sheer force of will... and mostly because of the adrenaline fumes she's running on.

Nadia picks up her phone and looks at it, she pauses for a moment, and then holds it out for Irena to take a look. "Who do you think that is?" She looks at the screen again, listening to what Irena's reply is, but either way there's only one way forward. She presses the button and opens up communication with the front gate. "Hello? This is the Rizzo residence. Can we help you with something?"

At some point fairly late at around midnight or so, Kitsuki might be awoken by the sound of her phone ringing. The caller ID will say it's from Anastasia Haz'Wehrs, and if she's a particularly heavy sleeper it might even be the third or fourth attempt to reach her in quick succession

"...yeah?" Seraphina says, not really sure what the problem was. Why are you giving her that look?

"Are ya cereal?" Karasu whispers. To have found someone more oblivious than her girlfriend... she says nothing else, but messages Seraphina on the holo-screen that only they can see.

"[Why'd you say all that? Sounded like a suspiciously specific denial. Try not to spook this character, plz.]" The message comes on the hooded redhead's holo-screen.

Eventually, they get to their destination: an apartment building located in the middle-class part of town. Before Harriet even reaches for the doorknob however, the door opens to reveal a Hispanic woman with her hair in a side mohawk. She frowns when she first sees Harriet, but that changes to worry when she notices that she's just barely holding it together.

They hug, and then Harriet is led to the elevator. The girl gestures to them both to follow. "You two, with me. Start telling me what the hell happened, and especially why she looks so much like Hattie! In fact, that's what I'd like to hear first."

"We're out-of-towners, who stumbled upon her on the street. Said something about vampires. Right?" Karasu elbows Seraphina to back her up once she's done giving their impromptu cover-story. She's hoping Seraphina doesn't say any more sus stuff, but she has a feeling that's what'll happen.

Kitsuki hasn't been a heavy sleeper since Annie was born, so Ana reaches her on her first attempt. The kitsune shifts to the side of the bed, trying not to disturb Obriane anymore than the call already has. She looks at the caller id confused for a moment before she answers. "Anastasia? What's going on?" She doesn't point out how late it is. Hopefully the girl has a good reason for the late call.

"K-Kitsuki? I- something's- ohmigod I need help I don't know what to do and there's blood and-" Anastasia's voice is shaky, panicked, and she's clearly hyperventilating. "I- I don't know what's going on!"

Oh boy, that wakes her up in a hurry. Kitsuki pops off the bed and pulls open the closet. She needs clothes first. "Try to stay calm, Ana. Are you hurt? Where are you?" She doesn't bother moderating her volume. It's probably best of Obriane wakes up too.

There's a pause as Anastasia tries to do her best as instructed, steadying her breathing with... middling success. "I- no, I-I'm not. I-I-I think Moth Park?" It's the first part that clearly scares her the most.

With the essential clothing on Kitsuki exchanged a few quick words with the no doubt groggy Obriane. She'll have to explain fully later. For now she's got to hurry. "That's a little ways away. Just stay on the phone with me while you wait, alright?"

Kitsuki hurries out of the apartment and moves briskly down the street. There's a subway entrance not too far from here, and one of the big stops in the city is just off Moth Park. At least she has a direct route. "Do you know how you got there? What's the last thing you remember?" Best to keep Ana talking she figures.

"O-okay, I can- I can do that. I just - ugh," Ana switches the phone to speaker, and a couple faint splashes of water can be heard. "I don't - No. The- the last thing I remember was heading to bed. I'm not even sure how I got out here."
