Well, that assumes the body was actually destroyed. No reason (at the moment) to think it wasn't going for the capture.

In fact, looking at the picture again, it looks more like the tentacly alien's fake body is a lot bigger on the inside than the outside; the fire alien's fake body seems to be fitting inside it easily without any compression at all.

Its entirely possible the alien tourist knew it was a fake body and this was its capture technique.

the author commentary seems to indicate that it would have been lethal to a being whose consciousness was tied to its body.

The author commentary also makes it plain that it is widely known that the flame-head alien's species just uses bodies as chassis, and that eating the body is non-fatal to them.

Only if they can transfer the flame before the flame transport device is destroyed.
And the flame seems to think it's rather urgent that the new transport device (the lizard) start running.

Okay, I do love me some xenology worldbuilding. Now I'm deeply interested in this flame symbiont species. I wonder if they evolved alongside a host species, itself adapted to take advantage of the superior intelligence of its symbiont, or if they just possessed any old species on their homeworld?

Depends on which reference he wants to make.

Take over the body entirely, only to finally settle on softer humanoids because they're easier to assimilate to...

Or they joined in symbiosis with another species that eventually came to believe they were being used, so killed themselves all off rather than be 'bound' by the symbiont.

Don't forget that this is a universe where both magic and higher powers unequivocally exist; it's entirely possible that being little flame-thingies was a magical 'oops' on the part of the species, or that they were created wholesale by some high-level wizard, archdevil, or whatever.

Or being magic using beings, they evolved over eons to not need bodies since their world provided many suitable hosts - but they found golems to be longer lasting and more customizable.

    EDIT:

Meatblanks? That's what they call their rides? OK then. Fully customizable!

Next up, more characters we've never seen before?

Oh, Sydney. It's cool that you've got a level-up on your orbs - and with time to think about what you really want. But yes, "infinifear" is something you're going to have to deal with. In fact, as you level up, the level of challenges Archon will expect you to handle will also rise, and that means scarier and scarier moments. I'm not sure there's enough training in the world; that's why PTSD is a thing.

Honestly, I'm a bit curious, this should be interesting. He's already shown more self-awareness than I'd necessarily have given him credit for in this strip alone.

Yes to both, as was said, its a nickname of her full name, and those two have a long beneficial relationship. Also Anvil caught me off guard with the new look.

We learned that during the sciona arc when she got shanked and rebooted then the giant robot attacked (what ever happened with that hanging thread anyways? Oh, nothing? /sigh) She had to select an update blind because she couldnt get her shield up and was about to die. Honestly, I wouldnt have been surprised if we saw sydney getting progressively more and more anxiety riddled as she tries to find max for instructions on what to pick next because she feels vulnerable without her orbs after everything that has gone on recently.

What? You never used to just jump the last couple steps instead of walking down like normal? A nice open area, might as well hop down when it literally cant hurt you because your power is absorbing kinetic energy. Its faster, easier, and more fun than taking the stairs, or an elevator.

Plus, super is as super does. It's like the Weasley brothers using "Apparate" to come downstairs for breakfast. If you've got it, flaunt it.
And, maybe, Anvil is making a bit of a statement in front of the new maybe-recruit.
