    Welcome!

The five of you are in a tavern, having dinner alone, wondering how your life came to this. The food is mediocre. The fire is effective. There is no bard, which may be a blessing.

There is a human waitress, a human pre-teen busboy, two dwarves arm-wrestling and drinking with every round, a semi-conscious drunken half-orc in banded mail that is too tight and an old woman drinking tea who is lost in a book. She looks familiar to you, Erizat. Maybe a witch? Or a harrow deck reader?

Ezora, who is not there yet, will speak in dark green. Please choose your colors and describe what the others see when they look at you.

A blonde man with short hair and short beard sits at a table, eating baked beans and onions with some bread and cheap beer to accompany it. The man is to some extent armed and to some other extent armored, dressed in a comfortable and practical all-weather outfit and overall seems to be a type you would more expect to be trekking the woods than being employed in the city. Beneath the table lies what seems to be a young carnivorous dinosaur. It's also armored, but lighter than the man. It watches the food and the people moving around with pointed interest. It is not too hungry as it already ate several food-quality (i.e. not poisoned) dead rats the man has bought earlier today, but still it would eat more meat given the chance.

A tall man in monk's robes sits at the far corner of the table, sipping slowly at his mead. Most of his visible skin is covered in a web of intricate tattoos, slowly but surely changing shape as they depict the flowing forms that his allies know represent the deep magic that he uses.

Marik sets his finished mug down to return to the food, but it is too close to the edge of the unevenly-hewn table and tumbles downwards. Immediately the man's shadow contorts itself into the shape of a hand and snatches it from air before it can fall to the ground, placing it more carefully back on the table.

A slight smile crosses Malik's face as he consumes his meager food.

In a seat barely inside the doorway is a rugged looking halfling with brown hair and eyes and a short beard. He wears light leathers and furs and has a dark tan and thick callouses on his hands from years of hard work. Right outside the door, loose but well behaved, is his constant companion, a deinonychus covered with sandy-colored feathers on his body and bright red feathers on his extremities and crest. Sanamin eats distractedly from the plate in front of him, his gaze fixated on the world outside the door. Thargril has made a nest of sorts, just beyond the halfling's reach, and sits deceptively still except for a slight twitch of its feathered tail.

Both Sanamin and Thargril seem wound tight and ready to pop, but neither reacts to anything happening inside the tavern. Sanamin spears his food without looking at it, passing every third bite to his companion and restlessly watching. "We should be out there hunting, not waiting here. The demons don't rest - neither should we..." he mutters discontentedly to no one in particular. He then stabs a potato more violently than necessary and puts it in his mouth without taking his eyes off the street.

    Rosalyn

A young woman sits between Malik and Roger, her eyes downcast watching the lizard under the table, though through her brown hair covering her face her shining blue eyes glitter.

In amongst the armoured folk in the inn she looks out of place, a ragged looking plain dress wrapped around her although on the table in front of her is a pair swords in ornate scabbards, each marked with the shining sword of Iomedae.

She sips slowly on a mug of water, some bread rolls left uneaten in front of her. Ignoring the hustle and bustle of the inn and street outside she stares into the distance now, list in thoughts.

At the halflings words she nods. "There are others out there, terrified and hunted. I agree, we cannot tarry long within these walls." She brushes the scabbards, almost as if seeing them for the first time, although the fresh callouses suggest otherwise. "We have to save them. "

Sanamin snorts loudly. "I'm not planning to save anyone - it's too late for that. But there are infernal outsiders to hunt. To kill. But sure, if it makes you feel better we can try to save a soul or two along the way..." he says, his voice bleak but not hostile to his companions. Spearing a piece of meat from his plate Samarin passes it outside the door to Thargil before taking another bite for himself. "The hunt isn't over...it may never be..."

"We must eat. Hope will guide the sun back to its proper place, but we must have strength to endure until then."

Malik looks up at his companions with his eyes looking somewhere into the middle distance.

"Dying won't save these people. We must not let despair lead us into a devil's cunning trap. I do not wish to lose more friends."

Malik's eyes belie his words. It is clear that he too wishes to stand against the tide of darkness, but is trying to wait for their final companion. His shadow lashes back and forth along the ground, reminiscient of the tail of an agitated cat.

It's good to have chatter among strangers. Feel free to even introduce yourselves, since you seem to have found a bond over demonslaying.

Sanamin notes a tiefling walking by outside and wonders a bit about that when demons are sieging the continent. Apparently the townsfolk don't know what one is or don't care to challenge him, and he moves on down the street and out of sight. A human child approaches Thargril curiously, but is quickly whisked away by her mother. Sanamin is glad that didn't end badly, no matter how well-trained Thargril is.

The food is mostly finished, especially if you're only eating every third bite, when a large, muscular man in brown leather and wearing a red cloak with a crossed swords emblem on the back stomps into the room and slams the door.

"Margaretta! I need a reading! I think that whore-wife is cheating on me! Git your cards out!" he almost bellows at the old woman.

She fumbles with her book and almost knocks over her tea, completely cowed. The ill-tempered cretin pushes it the rest of the way off the table and leans into her face. "Cards! Now!"

The dwarves and half-orc couldn't care less. The busboy almost wets himself and flees into the kitchen. The waitress keeps her distance, but keeps her eye on the barbaric man.

The blonde outdoors man keeps an eye on the scene, and on people's reaction to the scene, but does not otherwise get involved. These two seem to know each other, or, at least, one of them knows the other, so as long as there is no unjustified violence, and neither calls for outside help, that seems to be their private business, which they are free to conduct however they see fit.

Malik glances up at the commotion. In a small, steady voice he states:

"Is not there enough horror in this world without turning on one another? If you must ask a favor of the woman, you should do so properly."

His tattoos begin to flow more quickly through their intricate dance as he stands. Malik begins to walk slowly towards the scene, his shadow contorting once more into a hand and rushing forwards to encircle the boorish man's ankle. Malik is ready to pull his leg out from under him if he further threatens the old woman.

Sanamin looks annoyed with the big man and opens the door a moment later, letting Thargril inside. "Demons can take many forms...and possess many with their actions," he mutters as he considers the man. Speaking loudly enough to get the man's attention he says, "I can't imagine why his wife would cheat on him - he seems such a caring, loving man...oh wait...that's someone else..."

A white-haired woman, neither elf nor human, sits alone along the wall. Her skin is so pale as to almost appear blue, and though there is not a wrinkle to be found on her face, there is an intensity in her eyes that hints -- more subtly to some than to others -- at the centuries they've observed.

The woman is not armored, but a broad-bladed spears leans against the table at her side. It is far taller than she would be on her feet, likely taller, in fact, than anyone in the room. On the table opposite her plate, as though a companion to her meal, rests a singularly unusual helmet. Frilled, and adorned with a pair of large horns, it seems to have been wrought from the hide of a mighty beast. Or perhaps a demon.

The white-haired woman is not eating her food so much as she is pushing it around her plate. For the past few minutes now, her attention has been focused solely on the old woman and her book. The arrival of the red-cloaked man seems only to have heightened that focus. As others nearby speak in the old woman's defense, the white-haired woman continues to observe in silence.

The callous oaf notices the shadowy hand moving his way and glares at Malik. "Mind your own affairs, shadowcaster, or you'll lose more than your shadow."

Rosalyn's words enrage him to the breaking point, however. "You mouthy whore! You're just like her! I'll wipe that smirk off your uppity lips!" He attempts to (bullrush) backhand Rosalyn over her own table, but telegraphed it so much that she sees it coming and ducks easily. Sensing the tenor of the room, he then (move action) heads through the back door. (The back door was open already.)

Sanamin reaches for the front door handle and finds it stuck. The bar is on the inside, however, and is definitely not in use.

Sanamin should take his turn/update his post first and then everyone else please take a turn if desired.

Observing the halfling's unsuccessful attempt to open the front door, Roger concludes it's stuck. Or something. He knows he might be too paranoid by half, but he does not want to be locked up in openly demon-hating company. In fact, he does not want to be locked up in any company, but some coincidences deserve more attention than the others. There's no need to look paranoid, though... "Heel, Ripper, we are done here." The blonde outdoors man stands up and follows out through the back door.

Malik will take notice that there is still tension left in the room, but will dismiss it for the moment while he moves to check on the old woman.

"Are you well? I am sorry that you had to deal with such a rude man."

Malik then turns towards Rosalyn and bows slightly.

"Not many will come to another's defense in these dark times. I am glad to meet another who would."

Rosalyn weaves gracefully away from the clumsy blow, a hand sweeping the dull cold iron blade out of the scabbard before she turns to find the offending soldier fled through the back gate, She ignores the fleeing man joining the strange tatooed man by the older woman. She rests a hand on the lady's head, "Are you okay? Did he harm you." As Malik speaks she looks at him earnestly, "How could I not come to her aid. In this age what is left if not the last remnants of hope. Who will bring back the lost Gods if we do not start helping each other."

She looks out towards the door. "I have tarried here too long already. I can hear others out there. Lost and alone, they need help, saving and bringing back. That is what she would have of me"

The white-haired woman is out of her chair the moment the brutish man raises his hand to strike at one of the diners. She begins to reach towards her spear, but stops once she sees the the brown-haired woman effortlessly dodge his backhanded strike. As the man rushes out the back door, the white-haired woman steps forward.

"Margaretta, was it?" she asks of the old woman as he bends down to pick up the pieces of her tea cup. Her voice is much lower than one might expect given her youthful appearance. "Should we expect him to return? With friends, perhaps?"

Roger and Ripper stride toward the door, but pause to listen to the noise outside the front door. He also sees a black-skinned gnome, no...a shadow, no...a wayang about to get stepped on by the ill-tempered warrior, before she leaps out of the way with a "yipe!" She seems to be heading into the tavern through the back door.

Rosalyn nods and helps the lady back up, helping the others set her table back to rights. At the mention of the Lost Gods she eyes the lady with some surprise, it hadn't been that long since the Fall. "I was a servant of The Inheritor, the Sword of Ozem, Iomedae." She looks sad for a moment as she remembers the shining walls of Vigil before the fall, "I was in Vigil when the Fall came and found myself buried under the Dome of Truth before making my way here." Looking down at the well worn Harrow Cards she looks up at the old lady, asking quietly - "How much faith can we see in these now? Did they forsee the Fall? Now berefit of most of the Gods is there any power left in the?"

Seeing the halfling's distress, Malik moves to take action. He reaches down to the floor and quickly traces a complicated pattern over the shadow of the halfling, which rises and shapes itself into a double of Samarin.

"Be his eyes," Malik whispers as the image forms "Circle the building and check the other side. Return to him if you see anything of great note."

Malik then continues to the door, fishing out his skeleton key and fitting it to the door in the hopes that it matches the simple lock, and indeed that the door is locked and not held by some outside force.

Malik activates his Shadow Lurk talent on Samarin as a standard action. Moves to the door, then draws the key and tries it in the lock [roll]1d20+10[/roll] to see if it can open the door.

All advice given with the caveat that you know your group better than I do. If that wasn't true, you'd be getting advice face-to-face. So I generalize.

With the halfling signaling trouble brewing outside, the white-haired woman glances between Margaretta and the front door.

"You are favored by the Three," she says with a deferential nod towards the witch. "I am not so foolish as to decline your offer. But before you see to our future, a moment, please, to see to our safety."

At that, the white-haired woman closes her eyes and utters a series of arcane sibilants. Those standing within arm's reach can feel the air grow suddenly cold.

Erizat will expend a spell point to use the Divination Sphere's detect hostility ability as a standard action. Within a range of 110 feet, she can sense whenever an object or creature takes hit point damage, as well the type and source of the damage. Her sense can penetrate 3 feet of wood or dirt, 1 foot of stone, and 1 inch of common metal. She's essentially checking to see if some sort of conflict is unfolding outside.

'The Three' is a reference to Magdh, the faerie goddess of fate.

Those who speak Sylvan will recognize the etymological roots of Erizat's verbal spell components.

    1. The oaf continues into the alley behind the building, moving quickly, not running.
    2. Margaretta smiles up at Rosalyn. "The cards see all. It is we who must ask for their knowledge."
    3. The Wayang moves into the tavern. "Are you Roger? I'm looking for a Roger, Malik, Rosalyn...you're definitely not a Rosalyn..."
    4. Malik's animated shadow exits by the back door and disappears from sight.
    5. Malik attempts one too many actions for a single round, but finds that the door is unlocked already. It is held somehow.
    6. Sanmarin hears a frustrated roar from Thargril, still in front of the building, but not up against the door. (Successful Perception check)
    7. Erizat "sees" someone taking hit point damage.

    Spoiler: Is that everyone?
