Default How Are Tulou Viewed in Chinese Culture?

In the beginning of the live-action Mulan, we’re shown several tulou where Mulan and her family live. There’s some basic information about their history and construction on Wikipedia, but I’m not finding much on how tulou are seen by modern culture in China.

With the understanding that there won’t be a single viewpoint on anything in any culture…does anyone have a sense of how tulou are generally viewed in China today? Are they simply tourist traps, or do the tulou represent anything deeper for the Chinese?

Default Re: How Are Tulou Viewed in Chinese Culture?

From what I've seen, they are tied to a very specific culture, geographic area and time period, all of which are totally wrong both with what people expect of Mulan and what is shown in the film. Mulan is a Northern story, Tulou are southern.

This is a pretty good summary, I thought: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3QKq24e0HM
