Default Seaside 6: Six at the Beach

    Seaside 6

What is this place? Seaside is exactly what it sounds like, a sea.

Isn't there already a sea in Outside? There is an archipelago outside the cost of outside but Seaside is the ocean outside that coast.

So how can I get here? Seaside is actually more connected to the rest of the nexus than one might think. From the ocean you could reach HALO, Inside, Outside, Riverside, Random Places, The Hunting Grounds and other locations you can justify being near the sea. There are boats and planes going to every major island in the ocean so a PC can easily get to Seaside from any of those locations as well.

But what can I do here exactly? Seaside is made for sea-based plots take take place under or on the sea. Riding pirates and vikings, giant sea monsters, sunken cities, great reefs, eldritch jellyfish, underwater exploration, volcano islands with cannibalistic tribes and epic battles both under, on and/or above water.

Seaside is a vast ocean which links many of the major cities within the Nexus as nearly all rivers eventually end up here somehow. You can probably find a lot of the garbage and filth from the cities washed out here near the coast. But the majority of the ocean is clean, far from the city centers of inside and riverside.

Seaside have it's own cities instead both above and underneath water populated by all manners of underwater creatures who can't live above land or too far away from the water. Here you also find sailors, pirates, submarine crews, vikings and other air breathers that are associated with the sea.
The environment these people live in can be from tropical coral reefs and sharks to frozen seas and ice bears. While I maintain a number of locations in seaside (see the list below) anyone can feel free to make up what exactly exist in Seaside as long it's primarily connected to the sea. For more land bound adventurers there is Outside and if it doesn't fit there either Srs or Silly plots might be what you're looking for.

    Spoiler: The Crystal Pinnacle
    Show
Upon this mighty glacier stood a enormous demonic fortress from where they raided large parts of seaside. However, now little if nothing remains of the fortress or indeed much of the glacier as it was hit not only once but twice by goblin-made nukes. Instead, it has been reduced to a frozen wasteland filled with radiation. In the center are the two craters left behind by the nukes which have been filled by water and floating sheets of ice. While the water have mostly protected the wildlife from the radiation there are rumors of mutated demons still guarding the treasures they had stolen from the many settlements they attacked. Exploration of the pinnacle should for this reason be considered dangerous.

    Spoiler: Galespire
    Show
Over the sea of storms towers the spires of the rather aptly named city of Galespire. A symbol of arrogance some would say as it's location would be completely uninhabitable if not for the large force walls protecting it from the extremely violent storms that build up nearly every day. But it was not the arrogance of man that had built this place, it was the ethereals, energy beings from a world far from the nexus.
With a reputation of traders they had apparently thought the nexus being important enough to set up an entire city here, though who they had done so on an island in the middle of seaside is anyone's guess. The city's trademark is its many bridges and floating spires reaching up to the sky. The majority of the city is in fact flying above ground with only teleportation being able to take a person in-between the different sections of the city.

Under the protection of the force walls other beings have decided to settle down here, building up a form of undercity out of shackles and huts nearby providing a sharp contrast to the advanced Galespire. While these settlers now live under the ethereal collectives laws they are not allowed to share their technology with outsiders.

    Spoiler: Bayside
    Show
A buzzing port city not too far from Galespire and one of their most important trading partners. Generally you can't go to Galespire without passing Bayside first as only they have the captains crazy and skillful enough to sail into the sea of storms.
The city have under its long existence been claimed by a good number of different pirates and warlords which still somehow hasn't affected it's trade. The citizens of Bayside simply don't care who they're ruled and have learned to adapt to even the harshest of systems rather than trying to resist whatever new warlord that's parading into town.

That said, the current ruler is Don Juliano Karnago, an upstart goblin pirate that raids both the sea and the air with his fleet of ships and airplanes.
He has adapted Bayside to not only accommodate ships but airplanes as well with a primitive airport build in the middle of the jungle that his air pirates use as a base. Anyone else is welcome to land however, as long as they're willing to pay a very reasonable fee.

    Spoiler: Ithki-Ithki Isles
    Show
Spread across an archipelago of smaller islands is the home nation of the seaside goblins.
While their technology isn't as advanced as the ethereals they have far better living conditions than the rest seaside and even have their own navy protecting them from slavers. But it hasn't been needed in many years as the goblins have a 'understanding' with most slavers and pirates operating out here and is even rumored to partially practice slavery themselves.

Nothing official however. The goblins have advanced enough technology that slavery shouldn't even be needed after all, still the rumors persist thanks to the high number of goblin crime lords that have spread across the nexus. From the infamous KABAL in skyside to Don Juliano Karnago, ruler of Bayside, who both originated from Ithki-Ithki isles.

    Spoiler: The Sea of Storms
    Show
The Sea of Storms is very appropriately named, as the violent, ship-ending, storms here are nearly constant. Countless of ships, both air- and seabased have sunk here, creating the so-called ship graveyard that is rumored to be in the very center of the sea, a huge swirling whirlpool that pulls everything sunk here into it.

The sea is quite obviously cursed, some say as a divine punishment for some long-forgotten civilizations sins, others by some angry sea entity, what is known however is that whoever braves these water is either a treasure hunter or a foolish landcrab. As a precaution, the ethereals have set up a warning system around the sea to warn those uneducated of the dangers that only they consider themselves powerful enough to brave.

    Spoiler: Raptor Isle
    Show
This lone island sits on its own surrounded on all sides by mildly turbulent waters. Contained within are a number of settlements from ninja villages and small towns to big cities rivaling Inside, separated by uninhabited areas where cow-sized monsters roam. The technology of the area tends towards the futuristic.

Most of the island's visitors are numans from a certain other world, whose occasional faulty portals drop them here. Some choose to stay, and those who choose to return home know they have a home away from home waiting for them in the Nexus.

(The above basically means that characters from Eagleverse first end up here.)

She leans over to peer at the ship, and the muscles in her shoulders relax with a sigh of relief as she sees Anika and Co. emerge onto the exterior of the ship.

The catgirl's eyes widen as the prop she's straddling starts to accelerate, gripping what she can on the chassis as best she can as the vibrations rattle through her body. Gosh, Azil wasn't kidding.

It's a little hard to give Anika or the crew much of a sign here - Blanche isn't really willing to let go so she can give them a thumbs up or anything - so she makes do with an attempt at a reassuring smile back at them, even as a slight blush rises in her cheeks.

    Good, Geneva is helping.

She might not know a great deal about airships, but thankfully the crew does. A little psychic bolstering here and there appears to have improved the situation. Geneva is still feeling a bit off-balance from her double getting exploded but she's definitely doing much better now.

This, mercifully, saves her from having to stare at bikini bottoms, because she can just fly up while the other two are discussing how Laz has to climb on her own.

She hovers just slightly above the ship.
Awen glances at Anika: she knows that Anika can fly, but she doesn't quite know if she can fly and carry Laz at the same time. "Oh, good, fresh air again." In there was really stuffy and hot. "So...come on, let's get back to our ship."

    Operation Sea Slug

Will can hear what sounds like a clap as he will suddenly find that Lannereth is sitting on his shoulders. "No one's falling for wha-" That's when she looks down. "Oh! Erm..." She isn't particularly heavy, being literary just bones and clothes underneath her illusion, so Will could probably carry her around if he wanted to.

Leopold stares at them, his jaw dropping.

Spotting the child, Lannereth doesn't skip a beat and points towards their foe. "I- I mean, yes! Charge! For the empire! Let's show this overgrown lizard what humans and gnolls can do together!"
But regardless if Will actually does act as her mount or not, Lannereth gestures with her staff towards Titania and black energy starts to pour out of it and into her as she's lifting the rock.

She will suddenly find it even easier to lift but also smaller.
In fact everything around her also seem smaller, including the dragon. Will seeing her rapidly growing in size as the energy envelops her.
"Tittytania, destroy this fool!" Lannereth shouts and then starts to cackle as she sees Titania run back and starts to bash the dragons skull in with her Big Rock.

The dragon seems taken by surprise and is completely overcome as the Big Rock seems to go right through her spellery and actually starts cracking her bones. All she can do is let out a rather pathetic whimper and declare. "A- a temporary setback!" Then the blinks away Titania can get another hit in, the tree she was pinned under falling to the ground. However, it looks like she left behind a piece of her horn and a couple of teeth that fell off while Titania was slamming the rock into her face.

"AHAHAAH! Yes, that is the fate of anyone that opposes the empire!" Lannereth raises her staff triumphantly in the air before patting Will's head. "Good job, everyone!"

Titania is currently the size of a building or about 50 feet tall, which is also where she seems to stop growing.

    [Moonwell Convergence]

It should be noted that the ship is almost right above the moon well right now which finally really does make this a moonwell convergence.
Anika nods to Awen. "Yeah! You got the broom, I can bird and Laz, uh-" Thankfully, she's interrupted by Geneva who provides the answer she's looking for. "You got miss pink!"
She gives the mew a thumbs up. "Great timing, Pinky. Couldn't have been better. We lost those communication thingies, but it doesn't matter now. Let's get off this wreck." And so in a swirling green cloud Anika turns into a big red dog falcon.

The ship has lost a lot of momentum so it will still likely take a couple of minutes before it crashes into the side of the mountain. Though considering all those warning lights and signals going off inside of it, it might be more than just a crash if it isn't stopped.

    Post Moonwell Explosion Hoedown

"As you wish, missy." The foxy fellow remarks with a glance at the obelisk ship. "Suppose whatever remains of it after the crash should be worth something."

He then goes to follow orders along with the rest of the crew. While their ship had been damaged it was still air-worthy and could easily follow the demonic vessel, especially as it was now moving remarkably slowly.

Blanche can see Geneva appear near the team and how Anika turns into a Falcon, seemingly getting ready to leave.

((There's one more scene, but I will add it later.))

Oh, good! Now Awen doesn't have to figure out how to carry Laz.

"Mine broke when I hit the ocean," the witch says. Her communicator broke around the same time she broke her legs. "And the healing magic didn't heal machines."

Between fighting that golem demon thing on the Vigil ship and all the fighting in the demon's ship, Awen is too exhausted and mentally not-okay to cast another big spell to try to stop the ship. (For goodness's sake, she needs to use her hair to hold on to the broom because her hands are shaking too much! All the bruises she has are filling her mind with bliss, making it hard to think clearly!)

Since it seems everyone has a ride, she flies away from the demon ship and towards the Vigil ship.

The door proves difficult to open. It's stuck tight in place. When it's finally forced, it opens onto nothing but sucking mud. If there was a room beyond there, it's completely buried. "Uh, I guess we can't go that way?"

    Well, this was a dud.
After seeing that the door is useless, June swims back up. She wades in place. What can they even do? She scours her memory to try to find if they missed some other pathway or some obvious thing or what.

"We might not be able to help that robot," she finally says.
    June hits at the water.
"Unless there was one up by the ceiling then there weren't any other paths I saw. And...even if there were, I wouldn't be able to get up there."

She looks downwards at the obscured glass cases.
    . . .
Well, might as well check in those. "I kind-of doubt it, but there might be something in those pod-things. The ones already broken are probably useless, but maybe the other ones might have something."
June glances at Selekhael. "If there's nothing in there, we might just have to give up."

She dives down to look at the closest-to-the-surface glass pod thing, to see if she can clear anything off of it.

    Holiday Trip

Jack's really interested in the tour, looking at everything and everyone aboard. She's not phased by the sharkman and the robot; she's living in Inside, there's weirder there. "My bag's a bit like that, I think. I haven't figured out if it's bigger on the inside or if it leads somewhere else." It's probably bigger on the inside, rather than containing a miniature storage dimension.

Jack's particularly awed at the giant crystal engine, every single view of the outside, and the escape mechanism. "How's it work? So if something goes wrong, I know how to escape."

    Forgotten Pirate Cove

"There be this mask in here, too. I think it's a mask. Half white, half black, no holes. Don't look pleasant for wearin'. Not that I'd know." Frigate's own helmet is literally bolted to his head, so he can't try it on. Or easily replace it if he finds one he likes more. Changing clothes is something Frigate's never done, and something impossible for him to do alone. He can't reach all the bolts, and underneath he's... still quite sturdy, but the bits that make him work are vulnerable and exposed, more so than with a human or other organic being.

Finally, Blanche's ride starts to get more stable as it picks up speed. Which means things get less awkward but also harder to cling on to.
It reaches what seems to be it's maximum speed after a little bit and if she can endure that it eventually slows down and soon comes to a stop. "Great first try!" Azil exclaims in her ear. "Now you just gotta do that a few more times until you think you're comfortable speaking to the camera while doing it..."

This might be quite a challenge for the poor catgirl, and she gotta remember her lines too!

The first glass case is cracked and full of water. As June wipes away slime and vegetation, she'll see a skeletal assembly of rusted cogs, roughly the shape and size of a person.

It looks like there are twelve cases in all, each about the same size.

    Yes!
    That's it!
Now they just have to do one that isn't cracked, and then they'll find...hopefully a robot. Maybe the last one, farthest from number 1 would be the most compatible with the new robot.

June looks around for Selekhael in hopes that she's doing the same with other cases, and then swims up to the surface to breathe.

Selekhael is actually examining the mud beyond the door. It looks like she's digging in it with her paws to little avail.

June can look at a few other cases. Most of them are cracked and flooded, their contents rusted beyond use, but one, near the middle, appears to have held. Beyond it is a skeletal robot, rusted but not to the extent of the others.

June was hoping that there would be more decent ones to choose from, and that the best one would be in perfect condition.

Unfortunately, she doesn't really have a choice. June doesn't want to have to break this pod if she can - remove the whole case if possible - but if she had no other choice, she uses a rock from the ground to break the glass. That way, she can take the rusted robot out of the case and try to swim it upwards to the surface.

Luckily, heavy things are easier to carry when they're underwater because of buoyancy, but even with that help June doesn't think she can get it back to the surface before she needs to breathe.

After a few futile kicks, she looks down. How can she do this...?
    Oh!

June lets herself sink and sets down the robot on the ground near Selekhael.
She taps on Selekhael's shoulder and points at the robot, and then swims back up to the surface to breathe. After a few breaths, she swims back down and tries to start lifting the robot again, hoping Selekhael will catch on before she needs to give up and breathe again.

That would be true if the robot were less dense than water, but being made from steel and brass, it is decidedly not so. Luckily Selekhael does notice it when it thuds to the floor next to her. She nods, grabs it, and starts trying to swim upwards, changing into lion form as she does so for extra strength and size. Her head, along with the robot's skeletal body, breaks the surface a little bit after June. "Good, you found it. I think I saw something in the mud though."

He is almost definitely headed back this way, though. You can tell based on the sound.

Labcoat lady makes a 'tch' sound.
"Yeah, of course," she says. She re-opens her first aid kit and holds it out so Anchor can get whichever of the tools she needs. There's definitely enough tools to do this.

Tough guy doesn't seem to mind, though. It's okay. He'll let you work a bit more on him, but he is getting a little restless.

    [Lost Beach]

No, it's still true with things more dense than water. Everything has a buoyancy force proportional to its volume that runs counter to its weight. With steel and brass, the water'll decrease its effective weight by 10 or 15%. Speaking of its weight, since June can hardly lift it underwater, then she definitely wouldn't really be able to lift it out of the water either. June apologizes in advance to Selekhael, since she'll have to stay a lion and carry it the rest of the way back.

"Oh! You did?" she asks. She looks down at the ground again. "Might be nothing, but while we're still here we'll have to see if we can get it." If only she had brought one of the tools instead of leaving them on the beach, then she could use it to dig it up.
"Okay, we'll switch, then," she says. "I'll see if I can dig it up, with..." She looks around. There were some hard rocks around, right? "With that rock. Or whatever it used to be."

She dives to grab that thing, and tries to spot whatever Selekhael noticed and dig up around it.

Anchor takes some suture needles and whispers two spells: for cleaning and magical flame - to actually disinfect them enough to use. Then applying thread and redoing some of the stitches.

"This will only hurt a little." she tells the big guy.
Most of the stitches are soundly done, so it shouldn't inconvenience him for too long.
    "There, that should hold better."

June dives down to the bottom and digs in the mud. Selekhael was right, there's definitely something down there. It seems like a wooden crate, about a foot on each side, once she manages to shovel off the muck around it. It's clearly very old. Of course now that she's found it, she'd have to find a way to pull it free of the mud, which might be harder.

The mime returns and goes straight towards the front cart, the one with the sunglasses guy.

    The tough guy nods.
    He waits.
And! It's done. He stretches. "I feel fantastic! It's already working," he says, as if it were healing magic instead of just stitches to stop the bleeding.

The labcoat lady waits for Anchor to finish, and then takes her tools back.
"Very good," she says. "Guess you're more than just a pretty face."

    And then!
    Something happens.
    The carts stop.
The mime drives off ahead again, leaving them behind, and going offroad to scout.
Mr. Shades turns around and shouts out to everyone else: "Hey! The road up ahead is blocked by a tree. At this point, it'll take too long to turn around and take another route if we don't have to, and we don't have enough guards here to send ahead to take care of it. Does anyone think they could clear it out before they get there?"
They're currently far enough away, though, that if Zophiel were hiding near the fallen tree he wouldn't be able to hear Anchor shouting out something.
The tough guy immediately says he can take care of it, piece of cake. (But maybe that might be the perfect time for him to actually start a fight, if someone else were taking care of it.)

    [Lost Beach]

June has to surface again to breathe and think.
Okay, she needs a...she needs a...she needs to either dig it out more, or find a lever.
    Oh!
In the previous room, there were loads of tools. All rusted, but some of them would make decent levers. A lot easier than leaving the building and grabbing tools that she left on the beach.
"Hey! I'm going to grab a tool in the last room and then come back to see if I can get that thing out." She still might need Selekhael to basically hold the light source, so she needs to warn Selekhael.

She quickly swims to the previous room to grab some tools - any that might make decent levers - and then comes back to pry the crate up.

"Let me handle it." Anchor calls out, loud enough to hopefully overrule the tough guy.
"I mean, you just got your stitches, don't tear them out lifting a tree away."

She steps out in front of the tough guy, getting out her little unicorn statue so that she can turn it into a proper unicorn and (at least start to) ride ahead to the fallen tree.
But she is thinking that something else might happen quite soon.

    [Moonwell Convergence]

Geneva COULD lecture them about how they need to take better care of the communicators. She builds each one of them! And replacing them takes time!

But now isn't a great time for lecturing.

Now is a great time for not running into a mountain.

    Thus?

A pink psychokinetic will shimmer into view around Lazarus, gently lifting her into the air to bob along near Geneva like a ghoul-filled balloon.

~Okay, let's get out of here,~ Geneva says, sparing a glance down toward the (ruined?) moonwell.

She'll follow Anika and Awen out, matching their pace. It doesn't look like they're in any more immediate danger but the situation is rapidly evolving.

~What happened in there? Aside from killing the pilot.~

Sunglasses guy agrees to have her go ahead. The carts start moving again.
Labcoat lady almost volunteers to accompany Anchor, but she gets on her unicorn fast enough that the lady loses her chance.
Meanwhile, the tough guy concedes. And then he nods knowingly. Yeah, okay. He taps the side of his head as if to say he understands what kind of opportunity she's making for him.

    and
The robot hasn't been seen for a while. Weird. Must've had to take a bathroom break, or something.

    So,
Anchor rides down the road. Eventually, after being she'll come across a tree - it's been cut down. It's pretty large and thick, and blocks almost the whole road. No immediate signs of Zophiel around, but it seems likely that he was the one who cut it down.

However, there are signs that the mime is nearby: the motorcycle can be heard and its lights can be seen shining through the woods, on top of the hill to the right.

June can find a lever, no problem. With the extra equipment, she's able to pry the object loose to find that it is exactly what it appears to be, a wooden crate. It's damaged by time, but the walls of a sealed metal container can be glimpsed through the cracks.

After prying a few more times and surfacing once more for another breath, June thinks she has opened the crate large enough.

So, she tries to pull out the metal container from the crate. And, if she manages to do that, then she tries to swim it up so that they can leave this place with the container and the old robot.

Well, no one ever claimed that they were hired for their subtlety.

Oh no, poor robot. Hope he hasn't broken down.

Anchor suggests that her shadow slink up the hill and collect the mime. Her shadow suggests that she must be joking. Shadow jump more people, after getting all those prisoners all that way earlier? Not a chance.
    Which is fair enough.
So Anchor hops off the unicorn and addresses the fallen tree and challenges it in a loud and serious voice. "Alright, fallen tree. You have blocked this path for too long! I mean, probably not that long, since people probably come by this road in the daylight, but in any case, no longer. I will clear this path!"

She opens her spellbook, flips to the section on objects, inanimate specifically, and recites the spell "d͓̤̱̀ ̑҉c̠̘͚̊̀̓ͯ̂̔ ͚̬̖̻̺̤ͤ͊͝ỳ̮͕͙͍̳" but without putting much effort into it. A section of the tree a few feet wide starts to blacken and crumble to dust. But it's a bit too narrow for a caravan cart to fit through...
"Hey, mime, can you come down here for just a second. I mean, lend a hand?" she calls, pretending that the tree is being troublesome.

If he had broken down, that would be really unfortunate because then he wouldn't be able to continue or get paid. It's too bad that everyone else is too absorbed with themselves to really pay attention to their companions, because otherwise one of them might have been able to notice that he was lagging behind and would have helped him get into one of the carts. With his earthbending powers, he probably didn't need to walk around to be effective in combat.

So, part of the tree blackens and crumbles.

The mime doesn't respond, and for a few moments just...sits up there for a few moments. At first, it looks like he won't be coming down.

But then, after more time, the motorcycle starts to move. Doesn't come directly down, but instead circles around down to the road and drives up to meet Anchor and the tree. He doesn't get particularly close, though. His lights shine on the tree and on the road, but...he's probably waiting for her to say what she needs.
    . . .
It's hard to tell what the mime is thinking Since, of course, he's not really saying anything.

"I be guessin' twere a magical potion. They be useful things, but fragile. Pity ye stepped on it, could perchance be useful. How 'zackly does yer foot feel? This squiddy won't have grabbed it 'less it's been in the bag afore. It be an anti-theft device, I reckon. Prob'ly some way t' turn it off." Unfortunately, Frigate doesn't know how. He does lower the squid back into the knapsack, so it lets go of his hand and uncoils its tentacles from its wrist.

Did he not hear? Or did he just decide not to help? Or - oh, no, here he comes.
"The tree's a little bigger than I expected." Anchor gestures at it.
"But with two of us, we can just lift and shift that top part to the side of the road, and the caravan can get by." She closes her spellbook after another glance, walks over to the part of the tree she means and begins pushing it, enough so that it shifts a little bit, to indicate that with the mime helping, it would be easy enough to move.

If the mime gets much closer
    Spoiler
    Show
Anchor will quietly but forcefully say to him "d̟̪̯̟̽̋̌ ̠͚͔̝̰͑̑̉̉ͣͬͣ͗́ẻ̐҉̥͕̯͍̺ ", a spell intended to leave one dazed and confused for about a minute. Of course, the mime is a professional; he might recover quite quickly or have a counter-charm already prepared. Such things do happen.

The mime actually doesn't leave his motorcycle. He drives it forward a little so that Anchor isn't in the direct path between him and the tree part.
    And...
    He presses a button!
Two hookshots shoot out of the front of his motorcycle, and dig into the tree part.

Then, he drives, going between the part of the tree and the other part. However! He slows down enough because he's not going to say anything to her, so he has to get close enough to grab her attention and gesture. He gestures that he's got it taken care of and that she doesn't have to worry about that; it's light enough that his motorcycle can handle it.

After gesturing, he starts to drive through to flip the motorcycle around and pull it in reverse farther down the road.
    But,
Feeling suddenly dazed, he judges that it's probably best to not to go quite so fast. Operating heavy machinery while under the influence (of magic) is generally bad. The motorcycle slows to a practical stop and he puts a foot down and a hand against his head in hopes that helps.
