Default Legacy of Fire SoP/PoW/SoM V: For Vendetta!

Legacy of Fire, Book V: The Impossible Eye

The travel out of Kakishon was much like your entrance; incredibly hot, nauseatingly dizzy, and over before you knew it. Alas, there was no rush of shaitan going by you this time, as that would mean that someone had banished Jhovul and his party back into the Scroll, but at least you were free.

You find yourself in a high-ceilinged room are made of of shining brass. Arched passageways obscured by curtains of orange fire lead out in the center of each wall—above each arch, a large rune is inscribed, each different from the others. An oppressiveheat covers the room like a blanket, something more than what could be provided by the four curtains of flame. A jumble of open chests, overturned amphorae, and and scattered mounds of coins and gems lie scattered on the floor against the walls. A single phrase in florid script is inscribed along the domed ceiling above in runes similar to those that mark the arches, under which is a stylized rune that resembles an animal. However, you don't have a lot of time to take in the sights. A second after your arrival, an odd hum seems to emanate from the flames; you get the feeling that something's about to happen, so you have an action to prepare.

    What will you do?

Malak counts on the buildup signaling an entrance of something, not the cleansing of the room. "Listen to me, and mark me well, even if for appearances sake ..... get on your knees and bow your heads."

It takes Alssariq a moment to re-orient; the expected bustle of a Katapesh estate having been replaced with searing heat and more gold than he'd ever seen. Was this Katapesh? How long had they been gone, how much had changed?

The sudden tension, and Malak's words, were enough to jolt him from his discombobulation. "Oh. One of those types, is it?" Behind the sarcasm, his mind is racing. Not Katapesh, then, if Malak knows what's coming. Where were they, and what was about to find them?

Keeping a hand as near to his knife as possible, Alssariq does as instructed.

It turned out that Malak did not in fact know what was coming, for instead of any sort of owner of this place that you could try to appease, the four fiery portals each released a large coppery figure that the more arcane of you will identify as a Brass Man. They are constructs made by the efreet on the Plane of Fire; they don't show up on the Material plane often.

Though the exact meaning of these constructs will have to wait, as each opens their mouths and spew forth a line of molten bronze! Everyone except Rowan and 'Riq make a Dex save. They have to make two saves. Note that while you haven't acted in combat proper, you aren't flat-footed, though you are prone.

The party did their best to dodge the molten brass sent their way. Malak's shield was able to attenuate most of it, but still got hit for 2 fire damage. Goma took 11 and Akaash 12 fire damage apiece, but they were the lucky ones. Rowan, 'Riq, and 'Zad were each struck by two streams and thus suffered more, with 'Zad and Rowan each taking 20 damage, while 'Riq took 21.

So while the "Bow in case the owner of the land you're apparently trespassing in shows up" plan wasn't the best, it wasn't as deadly as it could have been.

    Round 1 (proper), FIGHT!

Malak calls out, "If you can't fly, scatter to separate corners to keep them from overlaying flame. Shahrazad, heal Rowan, then break to the southwest corner. Akaash, you fly along the northern half, I will fly along the south so we don't overlap tracks."

Malak adjusts his energies as he flies due SW overhead of Shahrazad's ordered track, but separate enough in altitude to deny a combined shot. Now that he has a good look at the constructs, he and 'Zad makes some quick notes, and hopes she has the sense to tell other folks what they face as he then burns a massive amount of his energy to call Oddity forth from the skies of another world, cleaving a way through the ethereal with his great axe, to stand before the western Brass Man and bar its path.

The fight continued, with both sides taking damage. Thankfully before rushing into battle, 'Zad was able to cast a healing spell on the party, healing everyone save Akaash for 22, healing them back to full. Indeed, you all feel refreshed after the spell, as its lingering effect bolstered your defenses.

Good thing, too, as Rowan and 'Zad each had a close call with a huge sword that comes inches from slicing them. It wasn't enough to stop the strike that hit Goma, as he took 14 damage (post DR).

The rest of the party had about a 50% hit rate, sadly. Neither Malak's summon nor Akaash manage to land a blow, but Goma and 'Riq land true, though they weren't enough to fully penetrate their defenses. As you ready yourselves to counterattack, Shaharazad speaks up. "These guys are weak to cold, but are highly resistant to spells, and are completely immune to fire, so don't waste your energy unless it bypasses those defenses"

    Round 2, Fight!

The freaky doppelganger looks at Alssariq, next to whom he stands, and smiles a freaky smile. "You move like a dangerous serpent, friend ... like me! Flank with me that we may strike this thing down."

Showing Alssariq the way, Oddity moves to the side of the monster, hoping that Alssariq will do the same. Oddity's butchering axe begins to hum as it is covered in aetheric force, ready to double-flank-strike the creature when Alssariq does.

Rowan's confidence turned out not to have been warranted, as his spell bounces off the construct harmlessly. Indeed, things got worse for him as two brass men closed in on him, Good news: his blurring effect blocked two of the three attacks that befell him. Bad news: his blurring effect did not block one of the three attacks that befell him and he took 23 damage.

The rest of the party was much more successful. 'Zad moved out as she shuffled her magicks to something more helpful, while her master unleashed an elemental blast that cracked the construct's plating. Goma and Akaash also savage their foe, though sadly Malak wasn't able to penetrate its armored form, even when it tried to get up, and 'Riq and Oddity actually felled their foe.

With a stubborn glare at these Brass Men and their so-called 'Impregnable' defenses, Rowan steps away to give himself time to cast and chants. He is visibly trembling with effort as he conjures stone from the Ether and let's his flames envelop it into a near molten mass before launching it at the westmost Brass Man.

Full Round Action: Gather Energy Admixtured Searing Stone Blast (1 point deducted from Admixture Pool). Stone Blast makes the Destructive Blast SR:No and non-magical for the purposes of immunity. Also makes it so the physical portion is not considered Magic for DR

    Ranged Touch Attack: (1d20+12)[26]
Damage: (16d8+24)[89] 1/2 Physical (the text on Stone Blast says Piercing, Bludgeoning, and Slashing but it may have been intended as an or not an and), 1/2 Fire.
Fire Portion overcomes Fire Immunity and treats it as Resistance 17 after reductions.

"On my way!" calls Malak to Rowan. The shabti readies his shield, flies north a little bit, and then lets loose with another burst of cold. "Oddity, go help Rowan."
    Spoiler: Malak's Crunch
    Show
SwA: Remove 1E from djinni's turban so that flight speed is now only 20'.
MA: Ready shield (note AC now 32).
    FA: 5' move to NE.
SA: Burn 1E for planar detonation (cold). RTA (1d20+10)[29], damage (11d6+6)[39] cold damage (so 1.5 listed damage).

EDITED: That looks like 58 cold damage.

Oddity nods and smiles a salute to 'Riq for the teamwork, then nods an acknowledgement from his master once the order comes. He then darts north, zipping underneath the brass behemoth's burnished body where able to come up between the western monster and Rowan. He then hews at he monster's leg with his axe.
    Spoiler: Oddity's Crunch
    Show
MA: Move 1 sq NE, then 3 squares north, with last 2 squares for Acrobatics and 25' total value of movement. Acrobatics to avoid AOOs (1d20+19)[30]
SA: Power Attack (1d20+15)[33], damage (3d6+21)[31].

If Oddity attacked and struck, use Half-Gone, which makes him incorporeal against that attack. This uses an IA.
If Rowan is attacked, use Bodyguard feat (1d20+15)[22] to aid his AC. This uses an AOO attempt.

Hearing Rowan cry, Alssariq darts north as well to intervene between the mage and the constructs. When he gets there, robe flailing behind him, he drives his long knife into the crease in the thing's articulated knees.

Seeing that Rowan is being looked after, Goma keeps his focus on his target.

Malak's chill attack finished off one of the remaining brass men, but the rest of the party wasn't as successful. Both 'Ria and Goma failed to land a blow, but the rest of the party had a degree of success, with Rowan managing to penetrate their defenses a bit, and Oddity striking true. Likewise Goma's shield battered the brass man, but it didn't connect as hard as he'd like, and his teeth couldn't find purchase. 'Zad finished her recalibration of her magics and slid forward, a rush of rocks behind her as she advanced to protect Rowan.

When it was the brass men's turn, they each lined up as best they could and spewed more molten metal at the party, though thankfully they didn't have as good a line this time. Still, Goma and Oddity got blasted, and 'Riq got hit by both. [[Goma and Riq, take 22 fire damage, Ref 1/2, DC 15. Oddity and Riq, take 19 fire damage, Ref 1/2, DC 15]]

Oddity steps up to the unattended construct, just barely managing to get boiled by molten lava, Oddity's massive axe twirling about his twriling body as he does so, and then he brings it out of twirl with full momentum to give an upper-arcing swing to the what passes as a groin.
    Spoiler: Oddity's Crunch
    Show
    FA: 5' step NE.
MA: Improved Feint, Bluff check (1d20+19)[33].
SA: Power Attack, hopefully against a successfully feinted opp (1d20+15)[18], damage (3d6+21)[34] + (3d6)[12] sneak attack (if applicable).
    * If brass man takes sneak attack damage, then it is also "disoriented" for 1 rd, taking -2 to all attack rolls (-4 if it attacks Oddity).

If an ally steps adjacent to Oddity and is then attacked, use Bodyguard to Aid AC (1d20+15)[19].
    * If after bodyguard and disoriented the ally would still be struck, invoke In Harm's Way as IA.
If Oddity is attacked and successfully stroke, use Half-Gone (q.v.), which makes him effectively incorporeal against the strike.

As Oddity keeps the northern one focused, Malak flies closer to the behemoth, but above the recently felled one. He burns more personal energy to against freeze and crack the hot brass man.
    Spoiler: Malak's Crunch
    Show
MA: Fly 20' NE. This puts him over a large, downed construct, so that should dissuade northern BM to come his way.
SA: Burn 1E for more super-cold. Suffers shooting into melee penalty, but not cover due to height advantage of self and foe.
    * RTA (incl -4 for shooting into melee) (1d20+6)[13], damage (11d6+6)[45].
EDIT: That would be 67 cold damage, assuming that hit.
