Re: This year we kill it: Corona Virus Thread Mark II
Now is probably a good tiem to remember that COVID-19 originally passed over from an animal of some sort. Which one we don't know and without going into what unfortunately is going to be politics, we are not going to be finding out either due to challenges with the investigation.
The virus already jumped from an animal to humans, jumping back, or other animals etc etc etc is no surprise at all. In fact, just wait for the fun mutantviruses coming back from a sojourn in... let's say birds. Corona fueled by avian HxNx strains. Good times. Good times. If I was playing Plague Inc at any rate.

Re: This year we kill it: Corona Virus Thread Mark II
Just one more in a long string of TELs from COVID.
So many places locally, non-chain, are doing cost cutting stuff. Replacing basic ingredients, going for cheaper foodstuffs (bulk white rice instead of angel hair pasta)... can already count on two hands places I used to go that have closed down this year. And this is a small area, so the repercussions will last for a while.
And yet, so many anti-maskers and anti-vaccine people...May you get EXACTLY what you wish for.

Only if you're getting the Johnson and Johnson version. The others are both one-two punches.

Re: This year we kill it: Corona Virus Thread Mark II
Keep in mind, that's "on average". Even vaccinated it's a good idea to keep on to restrictions and be careful. While it says 95% that's several people with 100, some with 70, a few unlucky people with 30 or 0. And you don't know which of those you are until it's too late. Only when a significant portion of the populace is vaccinated are we going to get close to that 95% on average. So don't go licking the subway handlebars just yet. Vaccination or not.

Re: This year we kill it: Corona Virus Thread Mark II
For the Pfizer/BioNTech. Moderna has a higher initial protective effect (85-90%, IIRC). Both are close enough for horseshoes and hand grenades on the second.
Yeah, but keep in mind that the second dose may have some ... interesting results. Since the Moderna vaccine is the only one locally, can't talk about the Pfizer side-effects after the second except anecdotally.
When I got mine, my temperature soared to around 103F / 39.4C the next day. And I felt like I got thrown from a moving car at highway speeds. So plan accordingly.
J&J version doesn't confer the same level of immunity as the other two, however. It's probably, at best, 75%. Good enough, but still a greater risk as the other two.Last edited by sihnfahl; 2021-02-11 at 08:47 AM.

Re: This year we kill it: Corona Virus Thread Mark II
I know someone who works in HR for a local health care system where pretty much all of the willing employees have been vaccinated. They said that about a third of the people went home early the day they got the 2nd shot (if they got it in the morning) and/or were calling in absent the next day, but then were able to be back at work. So figure about a 1 in 3 chance that the 2nd dose makes you feel miserable for 24-36 hours. Also, general soreness in the arm near the shot is very common. On the plus side, they haven't seen any serious reactions for the employees or for the thousands of (mostly elderly) other people who've been vaccinated.
edit to add: these results seemed to hold regardless of whether it was the Pfizer vaccine or the Moderna vaccine. I haven't heard anything yet about the J&J one.Last edited by tiornys; 2021-02-11 at 12:24 PM.

That's because they're still working on the approval. I expect we'll get more details once they have the hearing.

Re: This year we kill it: Corona Virus Thread Mark II
No need.
Interim Results of a Phase 1–2a Trial of Ad26.COV2.S Covid-19 Vaccine, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, has those details.
The younger group had these:
About 40% became tired.
About 40% got headaches
About 40% said things hurt a bit.
About 20% got nauseous.
A little under 20% got a fever to varying degrees.May you get EXACTLY what you wish for.

Re: This year we kill it: Corona Virus Thread Mark II
There were a few. Here's the four notables:
First one did not lick the handlebars directly. He licked his fingers, then smeared the handlebar. This was in Belgium.
Second, and more crazy person, was in Munich. Guy was 'trying to spread coronavirus' and licked ticket machines, handrails of both the subway and escalator.
Third was in Boston. Just found the subway car 'tasty'.
Fourth was a guy in New York, and he said he was using a fake tongue to 'lick' the bars for a YouTube prank.Last edited by sihnfahl; 2021-02-12 at 09:34 AM.
