Re: Planet Earth speeds up
The earth's rotation is generally slowing down because of the tides, right? Have they identified any specific causes of the speed up, or is it just vague categories?

Re: Planet Earth speeds up
Multiple factors can affect the Earth's rotational speed.
I believe one reason they're talking about is the weight of glaciers, which have been melting off. When you have untold tons of weight no longer in one spot, and distributing itself throughout, that changes the shape of the earth.May you get EXACTLY what you wish for.

Re: Planet Earth speeds up
We're also affected by the slowly expanding orbit of our moon.

Which will eventually lead to us being tidelocked together.

Re: Planet Earth speeds up
in the near term that is very unlikely, the Moon's orbit is getting wider.
The Earth's days are generally becoming longer (which is why them getting shorter is a change and interesting). Eventually, there may come a time of mutual tidelocking, or geosyncronicity, when the Earth's days are longer than a current month, but that will take many millions of years, maybe many billions, it's quite possible the sun will go red giant before that happens. The end of what Son? The story? There is no end. There's just the point where the storytellers stop talking.
