Default [MTG 6] Worldbuilding Game With Magic Cards

    Hi everyone!

This is the 6th version of a play-by-post game that uses Magic The Gathering cards to collaboratively develop a new roleplaying world.

Currently, we have the following players
    • +5 Vorpal Bunny
    • Zalphier
    • Captain Cap
    • Kinro
    • Volthawk
    • A Human
    • JbeJ275, and
    • Wasp

If you are interested in joining, please post here!

    And here are the rules!
    Spoiler: RULES
    Show
    0. This is supposed to be just a fun way to create a world together with Magic the Gathering Cards with the goal to create a setting for a role playing game.

    1. Players can place elements in the world that are represented by Magic Cards. This means the game doesn't have to go through an evolutionary process to get to intelligent life. Things can be spontaneously created.

    2. The world map is a 4x4 grid and the 16 potential regions are identified by a letter from A to D and a number from 1 to 4, so the regions go from A1 to D4. During play we will populate a number of regions with magic cards that represent the terrain in that region (preferably a land card, but other cards could work as a representation of terrain as well). Any region not occupied by a card will stay water. Adjacent regions with cards will usually form a common land mass (deviations from that are possible). The map can be found below the rules.

    3. New turns start every three days or when all players have posted (whichever is achieved earlier)

Every player can play one card each turn. It’s always first come first serve. Players can agree to change start times of course.

    4. With every turn time moves forward. When you play a card, the associated event happens after everything that happened before. However, if it makes more sense that a new element may be just newly "discovered" that is possible too. Just use common sense.

    5 Turns:
    a) Every player can place one Magic The Gathering Card per turn in one of the regions to introduce something new to the world or change it in some way.
    b) The first person placing a card in a region can name the region. Any card added to a region changes it in some way - it creates grassland, changes grassland to desert, adds a second related terrain, populates it with elves, builds a fortress, introduces a legendary creature etc.
    c) Each player can interpret the card they play as they want, they may take inspiration from the art, the flavor text, the mechanics or the name to set something up in the world. I would recommend though to change Names to make this world feel more unique.
    d) After the Set Up stage (see 6 below) every play should try to reference something that's already been established to connect stuff. It's encouraged to play together on emerging storylines and build upon each other or create a back and forth.
    e) If players want to keep something a bit vague they can describe the new element as an in-game text (a legend, a history book, a payer, a prophecy) written by someone from that world to indicate they have established something that may have happened this way or another. But they can also write it down as "normal" description of the events taking place.

    6. Game Stages: There are two game stages.
    a) Set Up. This stage lasts until 8 regions have been populated with at least one card representing the terrain. As long as a region has no cards, a player can ONLY play a card there that represents a type of terrain. However players CAN decide to play cards in regions that have already a card there (for example to populate a region even if there are still regions that are "water"). This shapes the geography and the mysteries during creation.
    b) Main Phase. This stage lasts until we don't want to play anymore.
Players can play cards that shape the geography, races, societies, cultures, some individuals, etc. from the creation onwards (everything is fair game, just keep an inner logic)

    7. Posting format:
    a) Post the number of the region where you want to place a new card (A1 ... A4, B1 ... B4 etc)
    b) Name the card you drew or selected and post a link on the Gatherer.
    c) Name the region if you are the first placing a card there
    d) Write down a short text how the card moves the world forward and add a one sentence summary to make it easier keep track of events.
    e) Finally post the updated History of the World by adding your one sentence summary to the previous History
    f) Example:
    Play:

Play: C3Llanowar Reborn: The First Forest

"But when the old world died not everything was destroyed – Gaia had rescued a single seedling imbued with the hopes and dreams of what came before. And she planted it and it grew and transformed and brought life to the Reborn World. And soon there was the First Forest."

The First Forest grows from a seedling that survived the destruction of the World Before.

    Spoiler: History of the World
    Show

    1. C3: The First Forest grows from a seedling that survived the destruction of the World Before.

    8. If you want, you can use the following link to get to a random Magic card and shuffle through some cards until you have found one you like OR you can just chose your cards any other way you like: Random Card.

    9. We will decide when something comes up we didn't think about. As stated in Rule 0: The goal is just to create a fun world together!

And this is our map (I will update it after the first few lands have been posted)

Play C3 Rupture Spire: The God Spire

"This is how it began. Nothing and then Something. A seed that contained everything. Endless possibilities. And then it took form. The Sky. The Stars. The Ocean. The Land. Young, chaotic and changing. Something burst out of the still molten rock - a spire of glass. And the spire grew into the sky, a magnificent tower that was not of this world but all of this world - and on top of the tower was a light that was so bright no creature would have been able to look into it.

Play C4 Ketria Triome: The Spire's Sires

As the First raised its crown to the sky in declaration of a world born new, it sired many, smaller than it but great still. Thousands of pillars jutted forth south of Father Tower, pillars of shining colored glass and heated crystal in burning pools and vast sheets of ever-frozen ice. Rough, cooling stone housed tranquil ponds that shimmered with the light of the crystals. And soon, other, most curious pillars were born, brown and rough, jutting towards the lights and crawling towards the water, crowned with verdant tips by the thousands. And as they breathed in, slowly and surely the fumes of the molten stone, the first seed fell, and the first flower bloomed. Once more, even on this world recently ravaged, life found a way.

Play C3 Crystalline Giant: Glass Titans

While the world was being formed, within the God Spire, the first race had awoken. Giants with flesh made of the glass of the God Spire, they were few in number and took years to shape another of their kind from the Spire and bring it to life, but the new world shook when they strode across it, and the light the Spire cast gave them power beyond that of their physical forms. As they looked out at the forming world from the God Spire, they thought themselves lords of all they surveyed, believing the world was being created by the Spire for them, its chosen, dismissing the life growing elsewhere. However, even they could not look directly upon the Spire's ultimate light, something which caused the Titans to feel equal amounts of fear and wonder towards it, many becoming obsessed with the light as they got older.

Hopefully I'm not rocking the boat too much by putting a creature in this early, but I felt this period had a good opportunity for a strange ancient race for later races to have vaguely mythological stories about, and our glass and crystal thematic so far gave me an idea I thought was cool.

Here many came, and the greatest of those many was Crystal-One-Who-Knows-Every-Path, and many opposed him and many bowed to him and those that bowed bought the smashed remains of those who did not and carved from them new Giant. Play B3 Caldera Lake: The Burning Sea
"However, even as the world slowly recovered from the chaos of the Beginning, the turmoil was not entirely over. The agents of that old chaos saw the new empires and beings beginning to dot the world, and they grew jealous. Or perhaps it was a product of the chaos itself, twisting and bending the skies above. Or perhaps it was called by one of the Titans themselves, given their immense magical power and simultaneous lack of experience with it. In the end, the result was the same. One of the many stars dislodged itself from the heavens, and began to fall. As the Empires of Crystal watched this happening, many of their best scribes took note of it, wondering if it was an omen of things to come. What they could not have known was what it would do to their society. Suddenly, it smashed into the plain, wiping out a great swath of Crystal settlement and causing massive disruption to the world as they knew it. Swiftly, the once bustling region was replaced by a great inland sea, bubbling from the heat of that star still lingering there. To this day, the Burning Sea has not stopped boiling, even so long after the Falling Star's arrival...

Playing C2 Celestial Colonnade Primal life takes new form
"Whether it was an accident, chance, or even intentional, the power and magic of the spire and it's children failed to remain exclusive. Time allowed for it to flow deep into the earth, throughout the sky, to swim through the seas and weave it's ways through many of what was new. The land was the next to awaken. Pulling itself together and then up, the earth shook for miles with these clumsy first step as land clambered forward. This was soon joined by another woven from cloud and set free to the heavens where none of its movement was restricted. And another to the sea that would explore the vast depths of it's new home. From these primal three came more and more, in new shapes and new forms."

Play B4: Oran-Rief, the Vastwood: The Unbound
While in the north the men of glass created empires and beings of air, water and stone explored the world, to the south life of a different kind flourished. The trees that the Spire's Sires had nurtured had spread out of the caverns, the light of the God Spire allowing them to grow large and mighty, and the greatest of these new forests and jungles was to the west of the Sires, a forest of trees that dwarfed the Titans and within which the mightiest of the new beings of flesh and bone lived and grew. Those of the Titans who cared called the forest the Unbound, acknowledging the way the trees grew from something smaller than themselves into something so large.

'And so the light of Father Spire guided the hands of his children from Mother Cave, stretching them forth into the harsh yet promising expanse beyond. The Unbound marked the barren land first, rooting deep and raising great children of their own; shining crystals and glass adorned them, reflecting life-nourishing light to the flowers and shrubs below. Those who needed the solitude of sacred shadow found their place in sharpened caves below, forging their own place in the ecosystem as the first and greatest of our kind awoke mightily to guard those who would follow after. Our great progenitor, The Forest Titan stretched out with his verdant embrace, siring many of us in turn; under his rule, we cared for the beings of the land, from the small plants to the light-giving beings of crystal and glass to the curious beings of flesh and blood that were rising to take their place in turn. And so life marched on, and it was good.'

Another of the beloved Oona, fascinated with the whimsey of the beings drifting through the open air grew envious of them. Twisting light and magic about itself, the Oona grew and changed in size until it'd become a great serpent with such grand and magnificent wings, that it never need set foot upon the ground again. And so the beloved became the sky titan and loved yet another thing in this world, but it did not wish for this blessing to be only for itself and the beings already made of air. The Sky Titan went north until it found a barren patch of land where none of the work of it's fellows would be disturbed and plunged into the earth. When it emerged the bleak stone split apart to reveal a vast canyon and at the end of it, surrounded by sheer cliffs, a miracle. For it was rumored whoever could reach the end of the canyon and stepped forth into the swirling spiral of light and magic would come to ascend like the great sky titan itself, with magnificent wings to carry them aloft the open sky.

The one who would become to Swamp Titan was no more, its power, its wisdom, its dream, stolen from it. But the Amethyst Lord did not stop there, for they had tasted envy and they had tasted betrayal and they now drank deep of its sweet, poisoned cup. Plots were woven, counter-plots, counters to those, each meant to pull more power to one lord or another. Tighter and tighter they weaved, until what was, perhaps, inevitable finally occurred. It is not known who held the blade, for they all grieved equally. As they beheld their great king, now fallen, forever still, they knew that they were, each of them, at fault, just as they knew that, now, they, too, would one day be the ones to face the eternal stillness. As would all who lived, except for the Goddess herself and, perhaps, those she had chosen as the best of them all.

Playing D3: Akoum Refuge, A Mountain Refuge

Another of Oona's favoured, fifth among these five great titans journeyed eastwards, the land of which he dreamed did rise up to meet him. He sat there and dreamt, knowing what duties must be done, as passages and valleys and high mountains shaped themselves around his dreaming form. Then death came into the world and he awoke. In this mountain bastion formed around him he created a vast hall at the centre of an immense bastion where those who would dream of peace and art could be safe. Here he held death at bay, never vanquishing it but ensuring those who lived within those halls would hold the eternal stillness at bay for longer than those elsewhere would. And he created works of art and culture in that hall that men have journeyed for a lifetime to see.

Playing B2: Citadel Siege, The March againstthe Spire

WE know from our first moment that death and life are two sides of the same coin and still we fear it. But for THEM it was new and the fear it caused must have been a thousand times deeper than anyone who is born mortal could imagine. So many of them despaired and lost all faith in the Light that so clearly had abandoned them. And who could blame them for it? Who could blame them when they decided they needed to take the light from the top of the God Spire and heal themselves, cure themselves of Death? If the Light really was Life -- then surely it would be able to heal them! And so they decided to march on the spire to demand the Light for themselves.

Play C3: Crystalline Crawler: Glass Spiders

Those who would steal the light from the Spire found that it wasn't undefended, despite the ages it had sat silent. The first sign was the spiders crawling out of the earth, creatures of glass and light like the titans but of a different mind and will, possessing a great malice towards all those they found unpleasant in some way but a calmness towards those who managed to avoid offending them. The march found itself beset by them early, the creatures never leaving them alone, and as they approached the Spire they became more dangerous, drawing strength from the Light, and more numerous. Finally, they beheld a great swarm living in and around the Spire, friendly to the giants that remained in the Spire, but aggressive to all others. Those who sought the Light found they had to fight for their prize, risking death for the chance of life.

There was only one of Oona's beloved who had remained, in the end, for it was he who loved the people most. And he was he who walked, now, amongst the fighting titans and crawlers, unafraid and unharmed. The crawlers did not attack him for he meant no harm. The titans did not, for all respected his wisdom. There were many a time, especially as the times of plotting had escalated, that he had been asked to sit in impartial judgement. In this, at least, only the king rivaled his authority and that one was dead now. And so, he came to the Light and, calmly placed his hand on it. And so, it shot to the sky and away, to hide from those who would steal it. "This is what you sought to bring to this world," he declared. "You have called the stillness and, now you would call the darkness. It is yours, then. And it will never again be far, so that you remember, so that you do not seek such folly a third time still." And so, the Titan of the Light walked back through the stilled battlefield, back towards his chambers, as the titans cowered in fear and shame.

And for the first time there was darkness and the mortals looked into the sky full of fear. But then uncountable lights appeared in the sky, blinking in the dark, giving hope to those who believed. And another - paler - light, pockmarked and cold, rose in the east and while it didn't illuminate the world as its sibling before, it still gave hope to those who believed. And they prayed for the return of the Light as they recognized the wrongness of their ways and repented. Play D2: Kazandu Refuge: The flying islands Rewna

From the clouds above, the sky titan watched with curiosity at the wonder and transgressions of the those below. It thought on these actions and then when this grew stale, they compared them to the actions of the other who'd come to embrace the sky. Here there was unparalleled freedom, no limitation, and yet it lacked something that the sky titan couldn't place seem to understand. It continued to watch and puzzle as the first was killed, as the great mountains rose, the light disappeared and as it bathed in the majesty of that first night, an epiphany had struck the sky titan. There was freedom in the skies, but also no purpose past that part. There could be nothing built like the great city of the crystal beings, the lush vegetation of the forest titan, or the grand art halls of the stone titan, only the open sky and formless clouds. For a time, the sky titan tried to make due with these, but no work or art made with cloud ever stayed, they lacked the permanence needed to drive others forward.

And so the sky titan resigned on a plan. It came first before the stone titan and pleaded for his help, offering clear the skies and to carry the great titan and all who would create art to the heavens above so they could capture the beauty from an entirely new perspective and behold new wonders. Then it came to the forest titan and pleaded with it to assist as well in exchange for sharing it's power of the flight with the beasts of the land and gentle winds to carry the seeds of the forest far in the world. When they came together, the stone titan raised mighty mountains and islands from the sea's floor. Then the forest titan spread great forests upon them where life could take root. Finally the sky titan, using most of it's power rose these islands from the sea and set them adrift in the sky so that it's followers would have permanence with their freedom. So they could build and create while still being boundless to the ground. The sky titan thanked the earth and forest titans profusely for their help, and then soared off to rest.

    - Exert from chapter 1 of "History of the Rewna isles"

With the aid of the Forest and Mountain titans, the Sky titan creates flying islands for the people of the sky to call home, before flying away to rest and recover.

Play B2: Enlightened Tutor: Lessons for the world below

With the Titans now at peace with co-operating, and with all even the dead having enough magic left to them to see the world below they saw many things, and they did not like many of the things they saw. They readied to destroy that which they could not tolerate until the wisest of them came and spoke of a higher dream. To teach the good, rather than to punish the wicked. And so they each arranged from those who might follow there dream great teachers, given the title of Wiswards, as the final line of protection decididing who could be allowed access to such wisdom. They went to each place and the taught many things, and many were grateful as they had been desperate, and those who would not be grateful but only greedy were destoryed with greaat magic.

After endless days of fighting and teaching and learning from those about them, the wiswards, they reached peace with the world around them, and the wiswards from each titan joined to create the five republics, each knowing all the Titan's teaching but holding one closest.

    - Exert from chapter 1 of "History of the Wizard Academy of Als Rekat"

Each of the Titans send emissaries into the anarchy of the crystal kingdoms and teach them them parts of Oona's message. This leads to the ccreation of the five great republics.

Play B4: Nyxborn Wolf: Beasts strange and new

And as the Light, made Sun, turned on its endless cycle, new beasts came forth, out of the endless growth that was the Unbound forest. Beast that knew nothing of the world without the night, nor of one without death. Far, from it, they thrived now on death, taking of others' life to fuel their own. And yet, the Forest Titan did nothing, for he had begun to join with the forest and, with newly gained wisdom, perhaps saw that this was to be the world now. And he loved them, too, as he loved those that were left being by this new world. As he would love those who would come after.

Play A3: Guildless Commons: The Mortal Lands

The beasts that dwelled in the forests of the surface world were not the only ones who were born to this new, more dangerous world. The mortal races, lesser in stature and power than the titans of glass and crystal but greater in potential and adapted to the world of night and day and life and death, rose to the west, across the Burning Sea. In those days, the precursors to our modern civilisation lived in villages and other small communities scattered across the region, a humble start to what was to come.
