Default Cinderfall (A WIP Setting) [Input/Suggestions/Ideas/Critique Welcome]

The city of Flotsam was once a very normal, small port unremarkable from any of a dozen others strung out along the western coast. It held a respectable position on the Pearl Peninsula, and maintained a bustling trade with both the men of the Northern Steppes and the cities of the Coral Archipelago. The city boasted a modest port capable of housing twenty of the large trade ships, and its dockside market was renowned for its fair prices and expansive variety of goods. Flotsam had never known war or famine, and its people were content.

Then came the Cinderfall. Billowing dark fog enshrouded the city without warning. Within the fog were motes of amber light that glittered and sparked like embers as they fell across the city, but they did not burn where they fell. Instead, they coated the streets, the buildings and even the people in a radiant energy. For three days and three nights, the fog crept across the city, growing thicker and thicker with each passing hour until the people were forced to remain in their homes, unable to navigate the cloying mists.

When, at last, the fog receded, the city was changed. The sun no longer shone in the sky, leaving all of Flotsam shrouded in an eternal night that was broken only by the glow of the gas lamps and fires. The people emerged from their homes and found that the glittering fog still encircled the city walls, and those who attempted to venture out into it were inevitably turned around and lost, never to be seen again. Panic settled over the city, and a firestorm of looting and rioting began. The governor and those who supported him became the target of blame and cast out into the fog. Chaos gripped the city, and it would only grow worse as the people discovered more of what the Cinderfall had done.

While the vast majority of people remained unaffected by the phenomenon. The Cinderfall remained a strangely beautiful but benign mist, but to a small fraction of the population, it was so much more. It changed them, altered them in strange and unexplained ways. They gained abilities. These abilities varied wildly from one individual to the next, with no apparent pattern or purpose. The only thing that was clear, was that these new abilities set those who gained them apart from the rest of humanity. They became something more.

Then came the other-worldly beings that would soon call Flotsam their home. They appeared overnight, one race at a time, as if they had always been a part of the city. First came the gremlins. Small and bestial in appearance, they inspired fear in the humans at first. Worse were the gargoyles who took up residence on the roofs and towers of the city, looming over the streets like the demons of myth. Then came the Dolls. Strange mannequins of polished wood and porcelain, ball jointed and somehow just as alive as any human. Finally, most disturbing of all, were the Lost. Members of the other races who had become lost in the Cinderfall, who sometimes returned as ghost-like aberrations, taking up their lives as though nothing had changed.

    Races of Cinderfall

The true extent of the Cinderfall and what lies beyond the City of Flotsam remains largely a mystery even after generations. Within the veil of the aether dwell countless unknowns. Creatures pulled from human myth and born of lucid nightmares. Beings beyond fathom and born of primal instinct. However, within the City of Flotsam, there are five known races that dwell together in relative peace. Each capable of reason, intelligence and empathy, they are collectively referred to as the Prime Races.

    Cinderfall Rough Notes and Intentions

Much of this setting is still in a rough concept phase, so I will use this section just to jot down some bullet points to give an idea of things I am working on and a general road map of things to come. This section will be expanded as I add new ideas and concepts.

    - There are two types of magic. The less common but far more powerful is known as Radiance Magic. Radiance is something a person is born with and it can not be learned. It is very powerful and almost infinitely versatile in it's applications. It is also sometimes called "Pure Magic" and it is entirely safe to use.

The other type of magic is called Veil Magic, but it is gained through the consumption of a syrupy, amber colored liquid derived from toxic plants that grow within the aether. Consuming this concoction grants the user the power to cast magic, but at great cost. It weakens the body and affects the mind. Most casual users do not use enough for the effects to be prominent. However, the more one uses, the more powerful their magic becomes, it also has an addictive quality to it since if you stop drinking it your magic goes away.

Those who use too much become crippled and succumb to madness, and overdosing turns people into gibbering, twisted ghouls seeking to drink the blood of others who use it.

One of the ways those who use Veil Magic are identified is through their amber colored eyes and glistening, black claws. As the Veil Magicians contain to consume the Amber, they mutate into a monstrous form. You could give players the option of this easy kind of magic, making them way more powerful than the fighters and thieves at low levels, but giving them drawbacks such as Amber mutations and withdrawal from the drug.
