Default The Arrēsiad, Chapter II: An Empire!6 Event

Sing, O Muses, of the heroic Gusuhaz
Victim of an awful crime against their marriage
Adventurer on an epic quest for justice.

Sing of those that accompanied them on their quest
Strangers scattered across the Kiswan continent
United in the search to rescue Arrēsa.

Sing of Highnest, imposing city of the Kro
Perched atop sky-high cliffs, defended by tall walls
And guarded by the Kro, rapacious bird-demons.

The songs, composed by Oyem Kw’Mesihafi themself, had quickly been spread to every edge of Kiswa. In any Abiherist community, librarians could be found transcribing the Saga of Gusuhaz, usually emphasizing the contributions of whichever member of the noble hero’s party the community felt closest to. Oyem themself had been shocked at how popular the story seemed to be among non-blemmyae: perhaps it had something to do with this “love” that Gusuhaz hadn’t been able to shut up about?
In any event, Gusuhaz’ quest was well known long before they arrived at the foot of the city of Highnest, and as they traveled their army swelled with supporters. Kiswans young and old, of all races and walks of life, caught passage on ship, cart, or on foot, following Gusuhaz’s route to Sikar. Upon reaching Highnest, their army now numbering several hundred, the adventurers marched into one of the villages at the foot of the city and, having chased out the residents, set about fortifying it as their base camp with which to besiege Highnest. A massive wooden palisade was quickly constructed, and the ever-growing tide of volunteers organized into a well-trained fighting machine.
For three weeks the army of Gusuhaz waited outside the walls of Highnest while the Kro debated what to do with them. At last, Gusuhaz decided to force their hand. A messenger was sent up to the city offering a temporary ceasefire and an opportunity for diplomatic negotiations between the supporters and allies of each side. The talks would be held on neutral ground, halfway between the cliffs upon which Highnest sat and the village recently renamed Arrēsa’s Redoubt. Of course, neither side truly trusted the other, and warriors for each army stood no short distance away, ready for the slightest sign of aggression to begin a full-on bloodbath. Gusuhaz, plus a few of their closest supporters, sat at the center of the demarcated zone, waiting with bated breath for the Kro negotiators to arrive.

Archers looked down from the walls of the first tier of the cliffs of Highnest. The meeting ground was beyond their range. A thick line of arrows had shown the invaders exactly how close they could get to the city proper and still expect to walk away. Crows circled high over head night and day, keeping a watchful eye over Gusuhaz and his followers. They reported to King Kro Karael at dawn and dusk and eventually he was forced to accept that they would not give up an leave on their own without causing more trouble for his merchant flocks. The Sultan had offered to send riders to rout them, but Karael was still weighing his options. He had not expected an army of peasants to demand he return his queen, but if anything he saw it as confirmation that he had made the right choice. These people crossed continents for her. No other woman could do.

The Flock Militant descended the steps to the desert below, though unarmed and in loose robes. Locals knew they rarely carried weapons of their own, but few foreigners had been given the chance to see them in battle. They stopped at the neutral zone, roughly a stone throw from Gusuhaz and his men. Servants filed into the neutral zone between them and set up large Ashirian meeting tent for the talks that were certain to come soon, while more set up tents behind the line for Kro Karael's personal guests.

Zisbehk Tebmusylo, a Kywamma that has made his name in the diplomatic circles of the Gehudu forest, walks towards the siege that has been erected in front of the city. Accompanying him is a tall man dressed in a black robe covering most of his features, the only thing visible is an upside down ankh charm hanging around his neck. Zisbehk and the man walk with purpose, they had not come here to simply observe the negotiations but to partake in them. When he arrives at the forefront he is greeted by a voice from the shadows.

"Look at that my little brother has come to play." says Cdyppan appearing out of seemingly nowhere. "Are you sure you want to be this far from your cozy office?"

While the man in Black did not seem surprised Zisbehk was caught slightly off guard and had to recompose himself. "Well dear sister if someone was kind enough NOT to join a rebel army that marched across Kiswa and Sikar then maybe I would still be there." he sighs "But instead I was chosen to guide our honoured companion here because my sister was already present." he points to the man in black.

Cdyppan eyes up the newcomer and shrugs "Not my fault that you are always running after me. But you should probably follow me. I am sure Gusuhaz would love to have some people around him that actually care about politics." Cdyppan walks towards the man in question and both men follow her.

Several people surround Gusuhaz but seem to fall silent when the two Kywamma and the tall man approach. "This is my brother he is much better at politics than I am and I think you will recognise his friend." Cdyppan says with a smile "I'll be close by if you need me." and with that she slips away.

"Greetings Gusuhaz Kw’Sewi, I am Zisbehk Tebmusylo both me and my companion have come to you as representatives from the Sewune to assist in the negotiations that will most likely take place." he shakes Gusuhaz's hand. As he does the tall man steps forward and extends his own hand the skin pitch black. "I am certain we can be of assistance. My knowledge of Sikar and its inhabitants is quite extensive. A messenger has already been sent to the Sol'Ikoth and I am certain they will respond.” the man says with his outstretched hand.

"This has gone too long, Crow King!" Harun had the look of his father, and his head was full of the sultan's truisms with less of the wisdom of his venerable age. The golden eyes were like his mother's, so most problems looked the same. Jana was of the Ashir, and the Ashir had simple solutions for armed rabble. In other lands, there was a saying that, to a man with only a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. No one built homes from wood here, so Harun had never seen a nail or heard that phrase. Bronze was for shields and spearheads anyway, not for carpentry.

The prince had arrived with a duo of his lead riders. The rest of his company, obviated by the dust cloud, was three miles behind on the western approach. They would be encamping now, or perhaps just unburdening themselves and resting the horses before Harun signaled. To the south there was a second brown cloud growing nearer, and the rumbling of a thousand hooves echoed against the foundations of Highnest.

"You should have let us cut them down when they crossed into Sultanate lands. Now they've taken a village and they eat your food. Maybe this is how things are done in their fetid jungle. If they were worthy of audience, they would have come with gifts and meek tongues. They insult you and they insult the sultan! Feh. Move your archers into range and be done with it. The next party from Kiswa will come with better manners... or at least taller shields," Harun laughed, not bothering to dismount the spirited white stallion as it paced.
I apologize for drawing CockroachTeaParty as a winged centaur.

Ka and a mysterious elf child follow the trade routes to the Mesa city of Highnest in the midst of the dry season to both official observe the proceeding and to deliver the "illegitimate" child of Shebitku and a Twa elf consort. That will be the story Ka tells Kro Kareal, in reality, not because it is a lie, but because it is the truth, so say the Pharoah. In reality, the child is the only son of the deceased Isis, and the last living reminder Shebitku has of his sister. One that must live in the shadows for his own safety. Ramses, young and impetuous, can tolerate no rivals, his mothers even less so. Perhaps, Mutwa II, barely new to reading can start anew in a world away. from the City of Beasts.

"I come as an emissary and observer my lord, please take this gift of silk from the northern lands."

The Sol has grown cold with the absence of The Black Pharaoh. The people know something is off and the highest-ranking officials become nervous. With his absence, Orakets three hearts begin to fail as his unnaturally long life begins to fade. his hair greys and his skin sags and his eyes shrink back into his sockets. The only beacon of hope for the people is the great obelisk. It still shines with its unearthly light. Their god is out there somewhere but where.

Well. It is not long before this question is answered when Oraket receives an invitation.

A man arrives at the palace claiming to be sent by someone very powerful and demands an audience with Oraket. He is dressed in leather and armed with nothing more than some bronze daggers which he leaves at the door. He approaches Oraket "Your Holyness, I come bearing an invitation. You and your council have been requested to attend a gathering hosted by the Blemmyae. It shall be held on the outskirts of Highnest in one month's time. I bear this request on behalf of The Back Pharaoh." He reaches out with a six-fingered hand and places a piece of Nakhla stone in Orekets withered hand. He examines it, reading the ancient script carved into its surface. No other being could have sent this. The runes were carved so perfectly and so smooth that no hand could have carved them and most telling of all, the unearthly color of the runes. A color seen nowhere but in the stone of the Black Pharaoh.
    "We accept your invitation."

The procession of the Sol'Ikoth arrives and immediately seeks out their lord. He isn't hard to find. His presence to them is like that of an oncoming storm. A danger, raising the hairs on your neck, at the edge of your mind. They have much to discuss.

A caravan of rickety donkey-pulled carts follows behind the Kiswan forces, equally ragtag to the army it has so opportunistically used as an armed escort through dangerous terrain. A dark skinned and long haired man in a cape of pink feathers stands atop the lead cart, calling out to all who will listen. "Come one, come all! I carry the finest wares of beautiful Kiswa, all yours in exchange for the treasures of fair Sikar!" The caravan displays all manner of foreign wares: pink feathered garments, food and drink made from cacao, avacado, bananas, and more. Tools and ornaments of flint, copper, and bronze. Young donkey colts.
Upon the arrival at Highnest, the caravan settles itself a good distance from the two armies, transforming into a makeshift bazaar. At night, it erupts into a center of entertainment, with drinking, gambling, and carnal pleasures all available to the interested, regardless of their home continent. The caravan leader, who calls himself Massi, is a constant presence, always moving between the carts and booths. But not everyone who came is so happy. One young man sits apart from the caravan in the shade of a simple lean-to, sharpening his long spear and watching the proceedings of the gathered armies with a wary eye.

    The Meeting Begins

Distrustful of the Kro and Ashir, Gusuhaz' delegates declined to use the Kro meeting tent, instead erecting their own pavilion, with the openings of the two tents facing each other across a short expanse of sand. Their closest supporters sat in a crescent shape behind Gusuhaz: Medmäsha Tänata, Rasiw Kw'Fikiri, Yaozhong Gun, Shire, Nikara, Charlie MacGill, and this mysterious newly arrived man with the onyx skin. All of them are armed to the teeth, but none more than Gusuhaz, whose Crimson Blade lies across his lap. Gusuhaz stroked the blade's edge menacingly as Kro Karael arrives.

I am not here to negotiate, nor to dictate terms. I come to air my grievances, and to have them addressed by the leadership of the Kro. Your king, this Kro Karael, kidnapped my wife. Had any person beneath the authority of a higher ruler done something similar, they should have been executed, but instead this scoundrel still sits behind the walls of their city, with Arrēsa still in their clutches. This is unacceptable.

Gusuhaz remains, seated calmly, while they wait for Karael to respond to their accusations. Their fingers continue to run down the shimmering surface of their blood-red sword.

    Before the meeting

The Bel-Dan-Ub who had come with Gusuhaz were all miserable, but Bren-Suhě was, perhaps, the most miserable of the lot. Most of their fellow sailors and all of the captains had stayed behind in the ports, exploring the strange cities of the Naherin or returning east to their homes in Kiswa. But a small number of them had come along, and they were now farther from water than they had ever been before. Bren-Suhě had naturally filled the role of leader, being somewhat more experienced than the others of his crew and having a forceful personality, but the problems had begun immediately. Many wanted to desert, and it took much convincing that facing these unknown lands with the support of the army was superior to slipping away and inevitably dying of thirst in this endless beach. Then the few Cha-Daně-Dan-Ub among them, westerners in service of the Trolls, had rejected him, and chosen their own leader, a young woman named Hon-Len. The breach between them had grown over the journey, and the two groups now camped apart.

And so it was that a few Bel-Dan-Ub stood now behind Gusuhaz, casting distrustful eyes towards the great cliff-city before them, as Bren-Suhě approached the hero.

"Come now, Gusuhaz, we have followed you from Kiswa to this place where all seas go to die, and we would not turn back from the final challenge now," he pleaded. "But is it necessary to parley with these speaking-birds? We might simply infiltrate their city and secret your wife away by night, and all return home the swifter. There is as much glory in defeating an enemy by his own underhanded means as there is in pitched battle."

From a safe distance, Hon-Len scoffed under her breath. "Coward." She turned back to her own camp and began to gather her followers.

    The Meeting Begins

The Bel-Dan-Ub and the Cha-Daně-Dan-Ub had no delegates to the meeting, and stood five boatlengths away from their pavilion, with a space the width of two men left between the groups. Bren-Suhě and Hon-Len eyed each other almost as warily as they eyed the delegates from Highnest, each resting a hand on the handle of their axe.

    Shortly Before The Meeting

Kro Karael flew down from the city and swooped into the back of the meeting tent his servants had set up. Here he shifted into man-form and his servants rushed to bring him his clothing. He was a striking figure, dark as the night sky from head to toe, as if he were carved from a single piece of obsidian. Here he met Harun, Ka, and the Alodite child.

"Come now, Prince Harun. This is probably the most excitement you'll have out of bed this season. Don't tell me you aren't enjoying the anticipation." He smiled. "I hear your father is doing well. May the sun's blessed light continue to shine upon him and your family."

He nodded to Ka and the elf child. "I hope you all can humor me for a bit longer. You're welcome to wait here or my servants can escort you to the palace." He finished dressing and strode forward into the sun between the tents.

    The Meeting
King Kro Karael stepped across the deep sand as if he were weightless and stopped halfway between the tents. Hundreds of crows circled over head.

"A shala elem, brave travelers. I am King Kro Karael. This is my land. That is my village you have defaced, and my people you have removed from their homes. I know you have traveled far, so I will forgive your impudence, but it is customary in Sikar to bring a gift when you seek an audience, especially so close to the Maw. You offer your gifts, and I share my water. That is how we establish good will so we may try earnestly to reach an agreement." It was at this point that he saw one of the Sol approach with a small gift. It was a small green tinted silver band with a green gemstone eye placed on top. The eye, though made of stone, moved and blinked like a real eye. "Ah, Oraket the Three Hearts, forgive me, I did not see you among them. Is your family well? You see? This is how things are done. Come! Drink! I share my water and hospitality in good faith." He waved one arm forward and servants began to approach the Kiswan pavilion with silver jugs of cool water for the gathered warriors. "You did not introduce yourself, Gusuhaz, but I know who you are. Hopefully cooler heads may prevail. After all, we are basically family by some accounts."

    Before the meeting ...

Shire glides among the assorted rabble of Gusuhaz' followers as they make their lives about the hijacked houses and tents near the walls of Highnest. While there are a few other ra in the accompanyment, usually near the Veramondi merchants or the Sewune travelers, the Ahra is not often seen in their company, keeping to herself even in the crowded throng. She is involved in precious few activities, seeming to float through like a listless spectre; she observes much, and speaks little. Still, she is often seen in Gusuhaz' presence. She is sparing, but precise, in her advice to him.

    Spoiler: Shire Inspiration

    The Meeting Begins

Shire stands among those behind Gusuhaz, taller than most but Nikara, but with less force of presence. Her white wraps have been exchanged for sand-colored clothes of more local design. Her hair floats on the subtle breeze that stirs around her, and she keeps her hands folded within her sleeves. She carries a single bronze knife at her belt, far less threatening than the many weapons carried by some of the others.

She observes the initial exchange between the human and the crow king, watching as water is brought forward and distributed. She notes the rich metal being used for the dishes - the presentation of these people is as opulent as she had come to expect from their bearing. Shire does not drink until some of Kro's own have shared in the water as well, and then only a few small sips. A small motion to catch Gusuhaz' attention indicates she hopes he follows her example. She would rather verify than trust, and in the lands of these strange kidnappers, she is skeptical of otherwise hospitable gestures.

Your customs mean nothing to me, Kro. I will give no gifts to kidnappers and rapists, and I prefer to drink my own water. Dispense with the pleasantries and answer my question. Will you willingly grant my wife their freedom, or must I take the advice of my Bel-Dan friends and storm your city?

The man removes his hand and tilts his head down while he removes the hood of his robe revealing the black and gold pharaohs headdress. When he looks back up staring at Kro Karael is the face of the Black Pharaoh who had led the Sol'Ikoth for years. "I expected better from the people of Sikar, when did they start kidnapping wives?" his stare is filled with not anger but disappointment.

"Thank you good crow. My family is well but I grow weak. I hope my little token is suitable and may your family be in good health. I have just come to observe. Oraket sits by and watches the negotiations. He was not yet sure what he thought of these strange people from Kiswa but he knows his children are going to have to deal with them later down the line. His mind is old now. He has been wisened by such powerful ancient knowledge, knowledge, and secrets that will die with him, he just hopes his children will discover that same truth he did. He knows there is one last thing he must do. He stands as the hooded figure steps forward and removes his cowl to address the two negotiations. Once the Great Old Pharaoh has finished he addressed Oraket and The Xthzgk’ahk who had been waiting quietly in the shadows. Oraket bows his head to the Pharaoh. "Oh great and powerful ancient one. I have seen beyond the stars. The purpose is now bright in my eye for ancient eons of truth now lay bare before my feet, the feet that stand withered and torn but have traveled far. Much new ground has yet to be tread and from it shall spring a new writhing truth. One truth. The severed heads cease their speech. Ties long forged sever and the ever-thinking eternity stands still. O Great Pharaoh Ahehyee Iiahe ymg' mgep kazth, mgepnah era ephainafl'fhtagn ng mgepogor r'luhhor ephaibugnah shuggog. nilgh'ri ephaiah mgepogor. nilgh'ri kadishtuor ephaiah se'nh ng mgleth ephaitlyze zhro. h'lloigshogg yogfm'log llll if h' na'ah'ehye ahor ah'gog. With this he reaches out a withered hand towards the Pharaoh who gives a slight chuckle. The Xthzgk’ahk steps forward and the world darkens, bystanders step back, and some scream as the ancient chant grows louder and louder as darkness falls and a howling wind sweeps through the tents. The world seems to tilt and spin like in a nightmare. The Xthzgk’ahk's cloak opens to a swirling void and through it, a shadowy shape slithers out and like a hand, grabs Oraket, and the crowd watches as he shrivels and ages before their eyes until he falls to the ground and dissolves into a mound of writing beetles. With that, the world returns to normal. The Black Pharaoh points to two and the grow until they are the size of a man. Then. They are. A man and a woman in simple grey robes stand before the people. their eyes glint like the obsidian shells of the beetles they once were. Children of Oraket. The son dons his father's Headdress and follows the pharaoh to the empty house. The daughter dons her father's robe and sits to view the negotiations.

In the small house, the Son turns to the pharaoh. Though new in this world, the son had been within Oraket long enough to know of recent events. "Lord Pharaoh. Your absence has left me and my people with many questions. you are our god, our father, and the creator of our empire, though you have left us for these people across the world. My father spoke of an ancient truth a single truth. I know not what this truth is but he said I must look to you to find it. Where must I begin my search?

"You already drink of Kro's waters, Jusuhaz! Who do you think owns the well?" The Ashir had no G in their language and Harun had no time for foreign tongues except for the one that came with his northern wife. Meanwhile, the Crow Clan had no J, and many still claimed that the Ashiric J, Sh, and Z should all be written with the same character. The Ashir were still adamant that fruit puree was pronounced "zham".

The Ashirian prince stepped a few paces forward to stand nearer Kro, spinning his long spear overhead once before planting one end in the sand. He drew down the keffiyeh from his face, then gestured to the west and south. A half mile off now, the sultan's riders stood ready with polished bronze shields reflecting the light of the northern sun. Ashir rode in narrow wedge formations, so it would be difficult to count their numbers, but anyone familiar with the region knew it was forty riders to a company, and there looked to be fifteen lead riders. Nearby, one of the veiled sisters echoed Harun's words in something more suitable for Kiswan ears and whatever it was that Blemmyae had in their armpits.

"I am Amir Harun il Jana Al-Ashir. I speak for the Sultan Zidan who is my father. His words are my wisdom. His laws are the laws of this land. In this land, we speak our names first to strangers and make declarations after. We lay down our weapons and sit in tents upon pillows and rugs. We wash our hands and feet -- this custom too must be unheard of in Kiswa. To come so armed into the lands of the sultan is to strike the sultan on the cheek. Your grievance may be with Kro, but you trespass against the sultan.

If you seek justice, Jusuhaz, then it is the sultan's justice you seek. I may take you to Al-Kazar where my father will hear you, if you will honor our customs and keep a civil tongue. I swear this: he is wise and patient in such matters, so he will forgive you your ignorance and your trespass.

But, to, as you say, storm the city, this is to strike the sultan once more on the cheek. This he could not forgive and his justice would be swift."
He gestured again to his riders, then behind to Kro's archers.

"As for Arrēsa... I do not speak for Arrēsa. No man does." He turned and leveled his unkind gaze upon Kro for a long while. "In this land, women may speak freely. Alas, that my sisters who are far more eloquent are indisposed. Be grateful that it was not my mother who came. Al-Zamira would pinch you both by the ears!"

The assembly of advisors behind Gusuhaz roared with anger, hurling abuse at the Amir, but Gusuhaz raised their hand for silence. "Enough!" The hubbub died down, though a few of the Kiswan delegates remained obviously on the verge of leaping from their seats and slicing Harun's throat.

Gusuhaz stood, bringing their great size and bulk directly into Harun's sight. They spoke in clipped, measured tones, careful not to allow any trace of the fury they felt bubbling within them become apparent in their tone. They looked down into the eyes of the Ashir diplomat.

"If you speak for your parent, if your words are their wisdom, then make your decision here and now. Otherwise, get out of the way and leave this matter to those whom it concern. This affair is between myself and Kro Karael, not this Sultan of yours. Unless, of course, you are implying that the kidnapping took place under the jurisdiction of the Sultan, that they are responsible for it? Gusuhaz' fist tightened around the hilt of their sword. "Either condemn the kidnapper that stands before you, or go back to your Al-Kazar. I will have no truck in your Sikar niceties, nor the justice of a Sultan who rules over rapists. You may speak your flowery, decadent words all you like, but I shall not be turned aside from my quest for justice!

With a flourish, Gusuhaz drew the Crimson Blade of Yedem Kali, lifting it high into the air. An otherwordly whispering filled the pavilions, growing from a faint sound to a steadily louder background hum. The sunlight glimmered on the blood-red metal of the sword, casting a sanguine glow over the delegates standing amidst the two pavilions.

"I call for a proper trial, a Kiswan trial! shouted Gusuhaz. "I call for Kro Karael, the wretch who stole my Arrēsa, who dishonored me and my family, to come out and duel me! Let the courage of those who quarrel decide this matter, and spare the lives of those who fight for either side in a dispute that is not theirs. Come, Karael! Come, you treacherous worm! Let us dance together on the sun-scorched sands, and when it is done my Crimson Blade will be awash in the blood of those who would dishonor the nobility of my name and my clan. Come, Karael! Come and face me, or live the rest of your life with all people calling you coward. Come and face me!"

Onodīs waited a short distance from the feuding parties, sitting on a low box and watching the various parties head in for the parley. If the crows or the Ashir had paid him any mind, he hadn't noticed their doing so. Between his knees was the sword he had taken from Andronikos, point down, and he spun it with flicks of the fingers of his right hand, counting the rotations as he did. Most of his family would have loved this, but this sort of business bored him, and it always had.

A new group approached and he looked up, without stopping his idle spinning of the sword. Arrēsa approached, accompanied by a group of Kro guards. She walked easily, but those alongside her gave him pause: escorts, or gaolers?

There was a ludicrous fiction here that he had never understood and, given his age, never would. It would be the work of a moment for him - or Gusuhaz - to dispose of these guards and liberate Arrēsa. There were more formidable opponents within, for certain, and the Ashir army shadowing them was of sizeable number (whatever their actual prowess), but if this were to be settled with arms, why not let it be settled now? But no doubt they would not: they would talk and reach no agreement and then return to weeks of waiting, before eventually somebody spoke the magic words to allow combat to start proper, at which point all the niceties would vanish like tracks in this continent's accursed sand.

And when they did, he would be there.

As Arrēsa's party neared, he stood, momentarily enjoying the reaction of the guards as he drew himself up to his full height, but held out a hand to pacify them without taking his eyes off the princess. He said nothing, but merely looked her up and down, as if for signs of abuse - or anything else. She didn't look like a prisoner - except for those guards.

If she was surprised, she hid it well: she was her father's daughter after all.

"Are you here to bring me back to Korebita?" she asked

"Your husband is here to bring you home," he said, placing what he thought were the appropriate emphases.

"And my father has sent you to help him."

"Your father's dead," he said, making no effort to soften the blow. "Oniyellīs rules in Limdimon now."

That seemed to shake her for a moment, but she set her jaw and nodded, just as Gusuhaz bellowed his challenge.

Onodīs nodded towards him. "You had better go on before they kill each other."

If Karael was offended by these claims he didn't show it. His face remained impassive. From the corner of his eye he caught one of his crows signalling that the Queen was on her way down. He cleared his throat and spoke loudly.

"The Amir has a point. You have not heard Queen Arrēsa's opinion on the matter. You levy many charges against me, and I do admit the Dreamspeakers misled me on the nature of your relationship, but I have no regrets. I made my choice and stand by it. She is queen until she chooses not to be. I have no desire to fight you here. Take your men and head home, or die on these fields. It does not matter to me."

    The Ashir Line

In the late evening, a pair of riders on donkeys detach themselves from the Veramondi camp and travel out towards the line of soldiers. The colorful caravan leader, Massi, is in the lead, with a reluctant warrior behind him, presumably a bodyguard.
"I... Hic! Want to shpeak to who'sh... Hic! In charge!" Massi is very obviously drunk, but his companion is anything but, cold and hard-edged, gripping his longspear tightly and peering warily into the dark. "I hash a... Hic! Businessh proposition."

Arrēsa was a king's daughter and a shrewd king at that, her poise unruffled, but even her composure began to disintegrate as she saw Gusuhaz with sword drawn. She started forward, then checked herself, pausing close to Kro.

"My love, put the sword away. I would not see you die here."

"They have treated me well enough, considering. Although the food has taken some getting used to." She smiled, though her eyes remained sad, then looked at the ground and spoke haltingly, "I know why you are here, and I wish I could simply return with you. But there is magic here that I can't explain - I cannot leave. Not yet." She looked up again and searched his eyes for some sort of understanding. "I am so sorry."

No child I have not left you. I have simply relocated to find people that can understand our ways and are open to the one truth; and I believe I have found them." He pauses for a moment to let the son process his words. "There are people in the lands of Kiswa that follow Abiherism, this faith much like our own looks towards the past for guidance but where we look only towards the ancient spirits like myself they look towards other ancestors of note. Ancestors like your father, a mortal that managed to learn the one truth in only a single lifetime." He points outside towards Gusuhaz. "That man is with the Blemmyae their people stand at the head of Abiherism and it is with them that I suggest you start your search." When his hand goes back down he continues. "As for myself I must remain with the Sewune for a while longer. This could be years or eons I do not know but at present they need my guidance. But fear not I will return home in due time."

"So," said Gusuhaz, turning with a furious expression to stare down Kro Karael. "You claim that they are free to leave of their own will, and yet you keep them here by means of dark magic? You liar! With a flash, the sword is back in Gusuhaz' hand, pointed at Karael's throat. I shall ask you again, vermin. Fight me, as honorable heroes would do. A duel, on these sands, and let the blood of the unworthy be spilled in compensation for the trouble they have caused the other. If you should win, my supporters will leave your lands without a fight... but if I win, your sorcerers shall cease their curse and permit Arrēsa to leave this place. They threw their feathered cloak aside, flexing their powerful chest muscles as they move, step by step, toward the Kro.

"Stop your flexing for a moment and listen!" Harun plucked his lance free of the sand, if only so that he did not leave it behind as he gave ground to Gusuhaz. Dismounted and left with only an unwieldy cavalry weapon, he was at an obvious disadvantage if things came to blows.

"The Crow King speaks the truth. Al-Zamira, my mother, she fell in battle and was dead three moons before my father brought her to the sun priests. He commanded they return her to life, and by the power of the sun, this was done. She was younger than I am now. The rains have come now thirty times since and she has not aged a day. Ashta hazid. She is holy fire made flesh: an angel! This is the power of Al-Sham who gives us life from death, life beyond life, truth from darkness, law from savagery. There is no dark magic here."

Turning to Aressa he added, "Sahiba, make him hear you. If not for his safety, but those who follow him. If Kro is cut down, they will not see the eastern shores again."

While the leaders of the factions exchange words, posturing, and threats, Shire has listened from near the back of Gusuhaz' group. Her eyes narrow as she sizes up the potential for violence. With the threat of the Ashir, and that of the walls, it would go badly for most of the camp if it came to a pitched battle; but the ra has little concern for most of these hangers on. She has little interest in Arrēsa, either, but Gusuhaz' success is important - his death here would be a heavy loss to Kiswa. He would likely survive - certainly in a duel, and even against the bulk of the troops the hero would likely come through. A few of the others might make it through a battle as well, but she assesses that the Ashir man is probably right: most of the followers would die.

Gusuhaz raises his voice again as his anger leads to further challenge. He is clearly past the point of needing her advice. She lifts her hood back over her hair as she slips further toward the back of the tent. Someone has to make sure events are remembered properly, after all.

The Son nods. Yes my lord. You are a being of much wisdom and I feel great new opportunities are on our horizon. He turns, leaving his god to his business, and went off in search of these Blemmyae.

He met back with The Daughter.
"Hello brother. I take it your talk went well, though you seem just as confused as to when you left?"
"Well. I'm not too sure what to make of it. We have been told to seek out the Blemmyae, the ones who are here debating the Kro. According to our Lord, they possess another piece of The One Truth. We must talk with them.
The two children go off in search of a Blemmyae who can point them in the right direction. Eventually, one young Blemmyae points them in the direction of Librarian Gotor Kw’Mesihafi.
Good librarian, we have been told that you are well versed in your people's faith. May we talk?

    Meat tastes good.
If we aren't supposed to eat people, then why are they made of meat?

    Gusuhaz

The blade lowered in Gusuhaz' hand. "If what you say is true..." They trailed off, not entirely certain of how to continue. "If this is true," they said finally, "and Arrēsa wishes to stay here, then I shall respect their wishes. But if I ever hear the slightest whisper that you are keeping them against their will, I shall return, with all the armies I can muster at my back, and I shall not be so easily driven away the next time. Furthermore, you should have come to Arrēsa or myself openly, rather than kidnapping her. I can forgive your capture of them, so long as they wish to stay here, but I cannot forgive the insult you have dealt to me by this kidnapping. As you say, Amir Harun, it is a slap in the face to me and to my people, and one that came unprovoked and without cause. I will return to my home and leave you in peace, but I shall require you to pay me a tribute to compensate for the injury and insult that you have cause - and one to Arrēsa as well, if they desire it."

    Gotor

The Librarian looked over the Son, apparently unfazed by their unorthodox appearance or birth. Yes, I had thought one like you would approach me in this fashion. I foresaw it, as I foresaw this meeting... although the result is maddeningly hazy in my mind. You are a child of the Black Pharaoh, an ancient hero who through some magic walks this world once more. But there is more to this world than simply the Pharaoh, or those that your kin call the Ancients. They are but a portion of the millions of heroes who went before, and now take the eternal reward for their great days in the kingdoms beyond the stars. You, too, could join them one day. That is the path of Abiherism.
