Savage Tides, Take 3! Entering the Den of the Lotus Dragon...

"We can gather information until the watch leaves that complex," Tillandi said, "and then sneak in. That will also give the guard they must have at the other side of that corridor at this moment time to get really bored, or even be removed."

Captain Renald chuckles, keeping quiet during much of the rest of the conversation. When he's done eating he excuses himself, warmly shaking Firi'Sar's hand and waving kindly to the other PCs.

There is stonemasons' guild centered out of the Cudgel District (C4 on the far left side of the map, near the city wall). It's likely they are sticklers for the rules, as both their home-district and their trade would suggest.

After finishing their dinner, the party walks back towards the Taxidermists' Guildhall, just to see the level of security on the place. There appear to be two watch members on post, with chains and signs identifying the building as a crime scene. You remember that there are other entrances to the guild in the area nearby, and after checking on them find them unguarded beyond the chains locking the entrances to the abandoned warehouses. You should be able to get down into the Lotus Dragon tunnels without being seen as long as Firi'Sar can pick a lock (which he can).

Firi'Sar clearly enjoys the rest of the meal, savoring both the fare and the opportunity to reconnect with a good friend. When the time comes and the party regathers outside, it takes no words to confirm that there will be no more sleeping on this.

Thanks to their previous trip, and a degree of familiarity with the immediate area, it's simple work to find passage back into the lotus dragon's halls. In an empty "warehouse," he quickly goes over the plan.

"I'll go in first. I can see in the dark, and have some substantial tricks to help me hide. Let me go down the tunnel first, nice and slow. It's sure to be both trapped and defended, and I'd really rather not deal with either of those issues, but one can be avoided with patience. We'll be able to communicate, pretty much regardless of distance, so don't feel rushed." He then proceeds to cast a series of preparatory spells, after which he takes a few moments to commune with his rat.

"Very well. If this takes more than half an hour, things could get more interesting." Without further preamble (but with an odd pattern magically forming over his body), Firi'Sar scales the ladder back into the depths. He hurries towards the finely-appointed chambers and into the secret tunnel, pausing occasionally to whisper back to his companions that all is well.

The tunnel goes a long way (for a tunnel), at least several street blocks, before coming to a well made and locked gate. As the party approaches the smell of sewage and seawater mix. Past the barred gate they see sewers or rainwater-drainage tunnels going to the left and right. Firi'Sar takes his time and picks the lock before looking both directions. In the dim light provided by the party you see that both directions look functionally indistinguishable.

"Well this is disappointing. I suppose it was silly to think there'd be something so incriminating as a direct passage to the Kellani estate. Let me think a moment."

"Something like this was to be expected," Tillandi said,"any tracks we can follow?"
She wasn't all that well-versed in finding and following tracks as you didn't get any on the ocean. But she did use detect magic on the walls, in the hope that someone had used arcane marks to indicate something that could help them. And if not, there could always be a magical trap she might see that way.

Firi'Sar recalls that several of the wealthiest families in Sasserine (likely including the Kellanis) have basement-access to tunnels like these, where they dispose of their trash and other refuse. While none are immediately in sight, it's very likely such an exit from the Kellani estate could be used to get to these sewers, and from their to the secret lair of the Lotus Dragons.

Once the others begin helping it isn't long before the adventurers find several nearby entrances, all barred and locked from the other side. It's not unreasonable to assume some sort of protection or guards will be further inside, though the portals would also be used frequently, so it's unlikely they're trapped.

Cordelia thinks for a bit and comes up with two possible portals that could lead to the Kellani estate basement.

Do you want to guess at one, or try to do something more to determine which is the right gate? A casual glance suggest that both doors (which are roughly opposite each other in the tunnel) receive the same amount of use. One of the two tunnels is on the same side as the tunnel to the Lotus Dragon lair, which would allow a young noblewoman to go back and forth without wading through the sewage and drainage, though that doesn't guarantee it's the right one.

"Neither door has magic on it," she said, "nor are there any arcane runes or something around the doors."

"If we do have to cross I can clean us all off," Cordelia suggests, grimly resigned to whatever might be necessary. "Maybe Lady Kellani had a way of doing likewise."

"Let's start with the simpler option," Firi'Sar mutters quietly. Gesturing for his companions to back away and give him space, the Elf waits until he's cloaked in darkness once more before he begins to work on the beam. He carefully retrieves his delicate tools, and begins to inspect the door. After a few moments, he locates the underside of the beam through the narrow opening and begins to manipulate the bar.

Akula looks around and can't seem to find any tracks in the water-logged sewers. The sewers remain free of threats - no goons, no monsters, no floods.

It does take Firi'Sar several moments to pick the lock, though. His first try goes nowhere, but on the second try he flips the tumblers right and the handle turns (DC 30 Disable Device). In the quiet dark the elf begins to creep forward. He goes several feet forward, takes a turn to the right, and comes upon a heavy wooden door. Testing the handle he finds it unlocked, though the door itself seems likely to be tightly stuck due to the heavy moisture in the air. Opening it will likely make a bit of noise - if there's someone on the other side they will hear it.

Do you want to try to sneak past the door (possible with a good Stealth check, but the door imparts a penalty) or get the party together to barge into the next room? Or something else?

Firi'Sar frowns, considering the door frame. "I've got an idea, but I'm not at all sure it'll work. Stay back a bit," he whispers to his companions. Then, he takes several steps back himself, and turns back to the door. From the maximum range, he begins to weave a spell together, to coat the door and its frame with oily grease.

"I'm not going to have a lot left in the tank, at this rate," he murmurs- equal parts idle musing and warning for his allies. The Elf prowls forward, and tests the handle carefully before pressing his shoulder to the door and leaning into it slowly.

Firi'Sar opens the door quietly, discovering a rather large basement room with six men inside. Two pairs of men are talking, one to the left and one to the right, while opposite the party are two men leaning against the wall near doors. None of these men look respectable - cauliflower ears, broken noses, scars, and other signs of violent encounters are evident on all of them. If they're guards, they've all seen combat. They are all dressed similarly, somewhere between a thug and a manor guard.

The room is well made with several unexpected features. First, their are bars separating the door to the sewers from the rest of the room, which is about ten feet lower than the floor where Firi'Sar stands. Two sets of stairs descend to the floor, the path on the right going over a closed door before reaching the bottom. Across from the party is a pool of water - clean and clear with a small flow from a fountain/statue in the opposite wall. The basement is rather well lit - several everburning torches line each wall ensconced in well-made holders. Whoever lives here has money.

No one seems to have noticed the door opening...

He hops over kitten, and past a pair of stunned guards to pull up between the man in the back and the door beside him.

The PCs continue to press the attack, engaging with all but one guard. Kitten and Akula connect with their attacks, though none of the other PCs land strikes.

With cries of surprise (and pain) the guards seem to rally, with the southwestern-most guard steping out of the grease and into the shallow pool to get at Firi'Sar and one in melee with Kitten adjusting his position slightly. All draw weapons - a mix of swords and clubs, mostly - and attack the PCs back. Firi'Sar takes a club to the shoulder - the guard narrowly missing a critical hit - and Akula takes a dagger to the foot despite his net hindering the guard (another critical hit that failed confirmation).
