Savage Tides, Take 3! Entering the Den of the Lotus Dragon...

Just as the party is beginning to leave, Cordelia makes one last comment to the kobold:

"Churtle, if you ever need someone to be kind to you... Someone who won't use your work to hurt people... Look up my father Henry Beck at Lord Lidu's aquarium in the Noble District. These days he could use some paid assistance," Cordelia suggests, suppressing a pang of guilt that the time pressures of her extracurricular activities are any this is so.

Picking their way through the cells, Cordelia covers her nose in disgust, appalled by the squalor. To think of people kept in the same conditions as captive animals is all too vile. She peers into the torture chamber with horror!

Step away from that brazier immediately! she commands, punctuating her order with a psychic strike!

Kitten can't see what's going on through the raised grating, but her hackles raise in response to Cordelia's own reaction, a deep growl conveyed past the stuffed spider plush.

Firi'Sar finds the door untrapped and unlocked. As Akula barges into the torture chamber (with the others following close behind) the chamber's macabre purpose becomes more obvious. A man in rags is tied to the stretching rack that dominates the northwestern corner of the room. There's an open iron maiden in the southeast corner and a sizzling brazier of coals in the southwest corner. The room smells awful - a mix of burning fuel, burnt flesh, blood, and excrement.

The two men respond very differently to the entrance of the PCs. The man on the rack cries out, "Oh thank the gods! Please, help me!" as he begins to weep in apparent relief while the hooded man turns, deliberately spills the coals between himself and the party, and runs towards a door in the northeastern corner. However, he doesn't take that door, instead opening a cleverly hidden secret exit and dashing through, slamming it shut behind him!

The coals on the ground make a mess of smoke and ash, though it doesn't look like anything is likely to catch on fire. The torturer's actions slowed the party enough that combat hasn't begun, yet. If any of you try to chase him immediately (possibly leaving the man on the rack) roll initiative, attempt to find the secret door latch and open it, and describe any other actions you take. If instead you wait, releasing the man and/or taking your time, describe things accordingly.

As Tillandi puts out the burning coals Akula and then Firi'Sar try to follow the fleeing torturer. Unfortunately, the secret door resists Akula's shoulder and evades Firi'Sar's hurried search (failed the break check and DC 20 to find).

"Over here, over here! Oh please, please, help me out of these ropes! That man was going to torture me!" begs the tied man as he struggles at his bonds. "I'm a merchant and wouldn't pay their 'business tax' so they jumped me last night! Said they were going to make an example out of me!"

Tillandi put her trident to the side and drew a dagger to cut the guy's bonds.
"Any idea who's behind this," she asked as she did so, "you know any of them? And how many have you seen?"
As this Churtle they had found in the kitchen wasn't what most judges would consider a reliable witness, it wouldn't hurt to get someone maybe a bit more reliable.

Cordelia waits for the others to find the way through the secret passage, irritated that she hadn't been able to slow the torturer. Kitten regards the former prisoner over the stuffed spider still carried gently in her mouth.

As it seems Akula has made progress location the door handle, Firi'Sar focuses his efforts on the arcane. "I'll be better suited to give chase in a moment," he mutters, irritably.

Tillandi frees the merchant, who begins rubbing his wrists nervously as he looks at the adventurers. Cordelia and Kitten watch as Akula opens the secret door. Behind is a short passageway that dead-ends into another wall, with no sign of the torturer. Firi'Sar, seeing that Akula had the secret door covered, opens the (regular) door beside it to find a cramped, spartan bedroom, presumably belonging to the torturer. He then drinks an extract and shrinks to the size of a halfling.

"I've seen men go through that way - there must be another door on the other side!" volunteers the merchant. "Um, maybe a half-dozen, all at different times...But you all aren't going to chase after him, are you? I need to be escorted out of here! I'll pay you handsomely if you stay with me, please!"

The new hallway is short enough that the torturer could have run through and back out again, using another secret door.

Firi'Sar doesn't even turn back to face the merchant as he steps through the door. "No offense intended- he's more dangerous than you. Keep up!" He crosses the space quickly, and begins searching for another door.

Akula quickly finds the next secret door, though perhaps not quite quickly enough. When the darfellan opens the door into a domed chamber with a wooden ladder leading up to a trap door in the ceiling above, he gets no glimpse of the retreating torturer. In addition to the trap door there are two more doors, each heading in very different directions...

As she looks at the merchant's wrists, Tillandi notices that the man's fingers are calloused and have numerous minor burn marks, but that his wrists are completely free of any marks of the ropes with which he was so recently bound. Either he wasn't struggling at all and the ropes were very lightly tied or something is not right.

"I will keep with you all, then - don't want to get lost in here..." he says in response to Cordelia's words. "I'm glad you all came along when you did - this has been a nightmare!"

Firi'Sar turns back, clearly confused. "Oh?" He abandons their pursuit almost immediately to return to where Tilandi has the "merchant" surrounded. "Clever little ruse, is it Lady Lotus? Or is someone else down here important enough to try and con an escort to the surface?"

Blade still bared, but held near his calf, Firi'Sar calmly approaches the merchant to closer investigate the figure. He's clearly prepared to fight at a moments notice, as he doesn't pull his eyes from his quarry when he comments, "I probably would even have fallen for it, without your keen eye, Tilandi."

Surprise Round

Suddenly the merchant's face turns ugly as he grins and strikes at Tillandi, shoving her backwards towards the open iron maiden! His push is clumsy, however, and Tillandi is able to sidestep and avoid the ugly trick!

Kersh Reftun, the actual torturer, who has been in disguise, surprised everyone except Firi'Sar and then rolled a 21 for initiative to act first. Firi'Sar also gets to act in the surprise round, but after the enemy. Once he has taken a standard action it will be the attacker's turn again, followed by the party as a block.

During the Surprise Round, Firi'Sar successfully tripped Kersh Reftun, using the rolls from FarmerBink's previous post.

At the start of Round 1, Kersh Reftun stood up (incurring an AoO from Firi'Sar - no one else has acted yet, so they're flat-footed and cannot AoO). Firi'Sar tried to trip again and failed. Then Kersh Reftun used Bull Rush (incurring no AoOs because Firi'Sar lacks Combat Expertise and no one else has acted yet) and succeeded in pushing Firi'Sar into the Iron Maiden, dealing 7 damage or 1/2 with a DC 12 Reflex save from Firi'Sar.

End of Surprise Round and Round 1

As he's ready for the sudden attack from the false-merchant, Firi'Sar sweeps the man's feet out from under him, knocking him prone on the floor of the torture chamber. With a grunt the man rises and dodges the elf's attempt to trip him again. With a growl, the man says, "I meant this to go differently," and he grabs at Firi'Sar and pushes him into the iron maiden! (Firi'Sar takes 7 damage from the spikes, with a DC 12 Reflex save for 1/2 damage)

"Hah! Come on, you fools! Let's take them!" yells the Lotus Dragon, obviously hoping for some of his allies to hear and come to his aid. So far, none do...

The Iron Maiden looks like it will deal significant damage if Kersh Reftun can close the lid on Firi'Sar. I don't recommend letting that happen.

The two secret doors are open, but there is at least one door between the party and any Lotus Dragon thieves (such as the disguised-as-a-torturer one the party was chasing) that might come to help Kersh Reftun. He was loud, but there is no sign of anyone coming to help him so far.

There was no time to start throwing spells or anything around, so she just stabbed him with her trident.

"Don't you dare!" she warns, as if he's even likely to get a chance to close the lid. She pushes herself up against a wall of the passage to make it easier for Akula to get past.

Round 1

The disguised Lotus Dragon continues to bluster in spite of Firi'Sar and Tillandi's attack, dodging Kitten's and Akula's attacks and taking on a vigorous glow to his skin. "Come on, you cowards! I'm holding them off - get in here!" he bellows as he slaps Firi'sar's rapier out of the shrunken-elf's hand and kicks it away.
