If I wanted to be a queen I'd start wearing my mom's old clothes again.

Eh. I have a bright pink Golden Girls t-shirt that I wear all the god damn time. I don't think I care.

I'm more partial to crowns. Preferably with diamonds. I'm not ostentatious, though, I don't need rubies or sapphires or emeralds making it colorful. I don't object to then, but I don't need them.

I guess I'm more practically minded than that. I'd rather have a recliner than a golden throne.

Besides, the way I see a dragon shouldn't need a crown to prove that they're a monarch. What else can they be, reclined upon a massive pile of treasure, far too powerful for all but the most skilled of champions to even dream of challenging

Have you seen Queen Elizabeth II's throne? It's literally an armchair with extra gold (IIRC).

I never really had a major issue with wearing feminine clothes, took until my twenties to work out why, and now I'm waiting for sundress season (which will be a lovely two days here in the UK).

My stance on clothing is "is it comfortable?"

I don't handle discomfort very well... Which is probably gonna be a problem someday but that's future me's problem.

It's part of the reason "get a symbiote" is part of the "travel to fictional universes" plan. Can just have it take on the appearance of whatever clothes I need to look like I'm wearing when, in fact, I imagine it feels more like Flanders's ski-suit.

I'm willing to suffer some minor discomfort for prettiness, but if I can get both I'll have both.

Sadly, even without the weight issues, I'd probably need surgery to look good in a dress.

I picked up 13th Age recently and have been reading through it wondering why, of all the things in 4e, the designers of D&D 5th edition removed racial powers. They're the main defining feature of races in 13th Age, and they're cool because they give meaningful differentiation.

Probably because they removed "powers" in favor of returning to a simplified version of the previous system.

And honestly, Powers were a thing that rubbed me the wrong way. Why should learning a new way of brandishing my sword make me forget this other way of doing it?

I can now confirm that "laser photocoagulation" is nowhere near as interesting as it sounds like it should be, though it was somewhat more interesting than I was expecting.

I feel like this is partly because D&D has never seemed to have a coherent goal in mind for how much they want to differentiate by race, and partly because "ditch what we introduced in 4e since it clearly isn't working since Pathfinder is outselling us with our own old ruleset" seems like one of the more concrete goals behind 5e.

I do agree that active racial abilities convey much more flavor than a handful of racial skill bonuses do.

I stepped on my glasses on Sunday afternoon, not enough to break anything, but enough to bend a few bits worse than any time before. (I take them off to read books, and frequently my phone; in this case it was the phone.)
I spent time making everything straight again, and trying to even out how they sit and make better use of the fact that unless I'm driving or something else where long rang is important, I'm mostly using the lower part of the glasses (multi-focals!)...
Two effects have resulted (not side-effects, it's all directly in front of me):
    - Everything on a monitor at home and at work since has seemed a little larger and clearer
    - I've had a days or two's occasional eye-strain and my nose is sore from the glasses sitting in a slightly different position.
I'm very happy putting up with the latter for the benefits of the former. It suggests that over time, (or from other accidents) that the positioning of my glasses has changed, though it could also be my sight shifting again, and the new adjustment has just lined the lenses up better. This is particularly good at work, since I'm in front of a screen almost all day!

Oh, I get why they removed class powers, although I'd have preferred something like 13th AGE where casters can replace, but can also just upgrade their existing powers (while martials just don't have powers that get outdated.

But racial powers were big things that never got outdated, so they stuck around and came to define the race and character.

Oh, and I know why, but I'm still allowed to be somewhat annoyed. But then again 5e is my least favourite edition because it somehow found a way to be the worst of all worlds.

No, they actually get cool stuff here They just don't get 4e-style powers.

More seriously, it's a mixture of 3.5 and 4e that takes some of the better ideas from each. More variable class design is one of the things from 3.X.

Last night I dreamt that I was in charge of a group of people that acted like an army but were consistently referred to in the dream as a "harem."

Eventually, I became lucid enough to ask why they were called a "harem" instead of an "army" but woke up before I got an answer.

This is not the first time I've had a dream with one word being used wrong.

What was that line again (roughly)? "Any man who needs to say 'I am King!' is no true king.". Maybe the same thing applies. A true monarch doesn't need to prove anything, so they have no need for symbols of wealth and power.

Be objectively better physically, mentally, emotionally, and morally than everyone else.

Either they'll make you king on their own, or they'll try to kill you out of fear or envy and you'll be morally justified in beating the crap out of them till they make you king.

The important thing is that you have to actually be better than the average person in every conceivable way. It doesn't work if you're some jackass who thinks he's better than the "nerds" becuase he was a star quarterback in highschool even though that was twenty years ago and he's never held down a meaningful job or if you're an anti-social loser who spent the last 20 years accumulating facts and trivia and praising your own genius, or if you're someone who expects the world to kiss your ass becuase you're old money and your parents never taught you the value of honest labor.

The people who are most likely to think that they're "objectively better" are often average at best, they just happen to be arrogant jackasses.

    Exactly. They're just niceties.

Wrong, the king can only interact with so many people every day. Power is ultimately a story that the nation agrees upon. Without symbols office be they trinkets, uniforms, palaces, flags or whatever decorum to tell everybody where they fit into the social hierarchy no-one could rule anybody. The king isn't better than anybody else, he's just the one that the apparel of state is most convinced can ensure their next paycheck and that apparelt of state only exists because the people agrees to the narrative that justifies its existence, that it is the best system ordained by god, the will of the nation, natural law, whatever to ensures both stability and an acceptable level of prosperity to the majority of them. Symbols of authority serve to reinforce that narrative, to reinforce the belief that the system is best and the one it has put in place as leader is in fact the best of them, imbued with special authority by the supreme authority that legitimates the state.

This is a very bleak view of mankind. Who says we need kings?

Which by absolutely no coincidence is 100% of the people who start monarchies.

Imean, given the success rate, it certainly makes sense for them to try.

My life experiences have left me with very little reason to be optimistic about human nature.

I honestly don't think the majority of humans are capable of making decisions that are for the good of themselves and the people around them.

The problem of course exists that a perfect person who can solve the problems of a community and make it functional doesn' exist.

Human society is thus a "monkeys with typewriters" situation.

A perfect solution is impossible, but a man can dream.

(And no, I don't believe I'd be such a person. I'm lazy, quick to anger, and have trouble understanding what the average person is thinking.)

That's not a success rate, a success rate would be "100% of the average people with an overinflated ego who try to establish a monarchy succeed." In reality, that number is much lower, being only a fraction of a percent.

Textbook case of survivor bias, right there.

If that were the case, we'd be all dead. Humans have a tendency to focus on the negative and take the positive for granted.

Expecting a superhuman to solve our problems isn't a solution at all and pretty much all structures created (under the pretense of) to enable that are part of the various problems. Horizontal co-operation is where it's at.

Why would they be? Natural selection doesn't promote altruism except for kin. We're all kin in a way, but it's not enough to make that work. OTOH, some people take the mickey, and it's right to want to see them come a cropper.

There have been a large number of near misses in human history.

Also, some scientists have said that if the problem of climate change isn't solved by 2050ish that human extinction will be inevitable.

Weren't you just talking about survivorship bias?

It does, though, you feel compassion for people you are not related to.

There have probably been a number of near misses in the past of the human species, but I don't think there have been any recorded potential species extinction events since we started writing.

Also, some scientists have said that if the problem of climate change isn't solved by 2050ish that human extinction will be inevitable.
Climate change won't kill us. It may well make things uncomfortable, but it's not that dangerous to the species, not like a big nuclear war might be, IMHO (actually, I'm not that sure about nuclear war either, Fallout is a silly game, but I do think even a big nuclear war might be survivable, for the species, we've got people all over the planet).
