"what you learned inside" is what I said. I will be more specific: You can't get knowledge out of the books to use in the real world.

Also the timeless aspect is pretty important. I assume eventually you read everything you want, and then once immortality gets boring you leave. Then you lose the knowledge so life isn't super dull, and if you want to reread everything for the first time you can.

hand-made ground beef patties cooked in onions and then with a can of condensed beef and mushroom soup poured over it and left to simmer and mix with the juices from the meat and onions to form a gravy, served with french fries with both meat and fry covered in the gravy=best steak I've ever eaten.

That does indeed sound very good, but it doesn't also sound like an actual steak.

Hamburg steak (and US variants) is made of ground beef instead of slabs of beef. Mushroom gravy is a common sauce for it.

It's as much a steak as a strawberry is a berry.

That is to say, it is indeed a steak/berry because people call it as such, but it doesn't fit the literal definition.

Oh absolutely. Food is weird, we come up with definitions and then just kind of ignore them when cooking.

You eat it like a steak, therefore it's a steak.

Note: Technically this means that if you cook it a certain way, a portabello mushroom counts as a steak so f you're ever grilling steaks and you've got a vegan friend you don't want to exclude...

If you wanna get super technical steak comes from a term that means "roast upon a spit" or "roasted" so any thing that is done like that is a steak. Pizza is baked, ergo not steak. It eventually comes to mean "thick slice of meat cut for roasting", so still not pizza.

While you're correct that in languages before English, the words it was derived from meant something slightly different (ultimately going as far back as Proto-Indo-European steig, meaning "to stick; pointed"), it entered English as "thick slice of meat cut for roasting". Now it generally means "a slab of meat sliced across the muscle fibres", but there are extended definitions (as already noted in this thread).

I mean, nowadays there's not much difference between roasting and baking. Preheat the over, pop it in, and either leave it or periodically check on it depending on the needs of the specific dish.

I once got my hands on pre-packaged naan. Nobody wanted it for anything and it was taking up space int eh freezer so I used them to make microwave pizzas.

Good ol' salisbury steak - just press a lump of hamburger into an oval, spray-paint it with grill stripes, dump it in a vat of brown gravy, and serve it to schoolkids with instant mashed potatoes.

Tips like these are invaluable to me. My entree game has gotten pretty strong this past year, which is fine if I'm just cooking for myself, but having no sides leaves a meal feeling a bit underwhelming when I cook for friends or family. Getting decent sides either means a) buying pre-packaged sides, which are expensive but usually underwhelming, or b) making them from scratch, which is expensive and tends to be a lot more work than the entree.

My cousin at least has the decency not to smoke in the house when he's visiting, which literally no other smoker I know has, so...

My family is full of smokers even though they all(except my stepfather, who obviously wasn't in the picture yet) watched cigarette-induced cancer kill my father.

...As soon as my father got the cancer diagnosis, he quit smoking. He would talk about how hard it was, but he did it. It's a bit like closing the barn door after the horses got out, but he did it. Tried to improve his odds, and IIRC he stayed off of them after he was told it was terminal.

I have to say IIRC becuase he spent the last... I want to say month, of his life in a hospice. He didn't want to die in the house and have me and my brother have to cope with seeing his body(we were very little at the time). I only visited him the hospice the once(he passed a lot sooner than the doctor said he would) so I can't say for certain, but...
