Not sure it counts but possibly this dwarf in panel 7 she seemed visible sad at the deaths and in panel 9 visible happy for the delivery of the diamonds - but I am not sure she counts as 'visibly sad at a lack of diamonds'.

For what it's worth, the answer I have in mind leaves almost no room for interpretation. There is visible sadness and a notable absense of one or more diamonds. I'm always open to alternate answers that fit the criteria that I hadn't thought of yet, but I don't think any of the guesses yet (good as they have been) quite fit.

There's what might be sadness on Blackwing's face in the last two panels of 1183 when contemplating a bag which only has rubies visible at the top, but I don't think this fits either since the sadness isn't "at a lack of diamonds" -- it's for the fate of "these sparkly boys destined to flutter to oblivion".

That was already suggested but all the characters in that are most annoyed then sad really.

I was going to suggest panel 11 with Vaarsuvius being happy and Belkar being unhappy about the hypothetical diamond in question but Belkar is also more annoyed then sad in my view.

Just making sure, are "not in a speech bubble" and "on purpose" both literal requirements? E.g. a background sign with a misspelling that highlights the signwriter's lack of education, or a strip title that generates a deliberate pun would be fine -- but if someone's speech bubble includes a typo such as "phylacetry", it fails on both accounts.

As someone who is not a great speller (and never was - think I might actually be getting worse as the years go by) it could be a word familiarity thing Elan is more used to the word 'shopkeeper' then the word 'lich' so for that he just guessed, I imagine that if you asked a hundred people on the street to spell lich or shopkeeper more would get shopkeeper correct.

As we have an open question I will try what I think might be an easy one.
