    The Setup
Everyone knows Mirt the Moneylender. Everyone knows he’s the richest, fattest, canniest rogue in Waterdeep, and everyone knows you don’t get to be any of those things by mistake. One way to become very rich is exploring Undermountain, and an even better way to stay alive is to pay other people to delve the depths for you.

The Company of Bright Banners recently returned to Mirt with an interesting piece of news: they discovered a portal in Undermountain that seems to connect to a cave complex outside the dungeon. The company reached the surface with little trouble. Thaymount was visible on the eastern horizon, while mountain ranges ran in parallel to the north and south, which would place them in Thesk, between the Thesk Mountains and the Dragonjaws. After reporting to Mirt, the company went back to Undermountain to confirm the route, and they haven’t been heard from since.

Portals in Undermountain are notoriously unreliable. But this one might be stable, and if it is, Mirt has a variety of merchant contacts in the Unapproachable East who would pay well to save themselves the arduous multi-week trip to the City of Splendors.

Mirt has offered 50,000 gold lions to the adventuring party who re-discovers the portal and maps the path. He has a contact in Phent who will give a sealed letter of confirmation to the first adventuring group who reaches him via Undermountain. Inquire at the Yawning Portal for further details.

Interest. I've been wanting to try the Beast Path Barbarian for a while as a Tiefling. I'd refluff it so that instead of manifesting beast qualities when they rage, it's actually demonic/infernal traits (still claws, bite or a tail); so instead of a stereotypical savage barbarian the feel of the character is closer to the Claymores in Claymore. What is the 10-min backstory already? I've heard of that before, but can't recall.

I think I'm going to roll up a Way of Shadow Monk from Shou Lung in Kara-Tur. Mirt is a fool if he thinks his merchant friends won't send agents of their own to secure the portal.

Ghrimm Thunderstone, Dwarven Arcanist & Grump, owl familiar
    AC: 21 | MAX HP: 43 | CURRENT: 43 | HIT DIE:5d10 | CURRENT: 5d10
    INITIATIVE: +0 | PASSIVE PERCEPTION: 15 | PASSIVE INSIGHT: 11
    SPELL SLOTS: 1st: 3/3
    ACTIVE EFFECTS: None.
    CONDITIONS: None.

APPEARANCE: Ghrimm is a tall, broad dwarf, his arms corded with thick slabs of muscles, his hands calloused from years spent working the forges of his clan, now resettled in the dwarven Citadel of Felbarr. He wears plate and mail forged by his own father, it is inscribed with dwarven runes, both to Moradin, and to the Sentinel, Gorm Gulthyn. He carries a large round shield, incribed with the symbol of Felbarr on the central boss, and a well maintained battle axe, orc teeth attached to it's haft by leather thongs.

PERSONALITY: Ghrimm is a reserved, yet willful individual, who believes in the value of individuality and freedom of choice. He holds a very rational world view, despite his affinity for arcane and eldritch rituals. Like many dwarves, he is respectful of his forebears, the men and women who, through their hard work and labor, provided for him the life in which he could excel at his study and craft. He is a warrior, and his passion runs deep, though, in typical dwarven fashion, is hidden beneath a dour, stoic, and sometimes gruff exterior.

    Spoiler: Five Minute Background
    Show
    STEP 1
    1. Father helped retake Citadel Felbarr from orc hordes in 1367 DR, Ghrimm was born in Felbarr and grew to adulthood in the fortress, learning the art of the forge from his father, a respected forge master. His father's name affords Ghrimm a measure of respect with dwarven clans of the north.
    2. Ghrimm is something of a libertarian, valuing personal autonomy, and the right for individuals to succeed or fail on their own merits. This does not mean he doesn't appreciate his ancestry of his forefather's, but he feels that dwarven autonomy is necessary for his culture's continued success.
    3. He worked as a defender of Felbarr for a number of years after his 50th name day, devoted to Gorm Gulthyn, ensuring that the northern tribes of orcs didn't gather into an army that could threaten dwarven rule in the mountains. It was here, fighting along dwarven soldiers, maintaining and fixing their armor in the field, before breaking a charge of worg mounted orc raiders, he quickly learned a love of dwarven mead, a good song, and hard work.
    4. On return to the Felbarr forges, he studied under Queen Tithmel's arcane advisor, learning the arcane arts, and blending those arts to protect himself and punish his foes with eldritch power. It was under this tutelage he learned that since retaking the Citadel, a number of dwarven relics had been stolen and scattered by the orc hordes and their unnamed masters across the realms.
    5. Vowing to retreive the relics for his Queen, to prevent them from falling into the hands of those not blessed by Moradin, he was tasked with journeying to Waterdeep where he discovered that these relics were deep beneath the city.

    STEP 2
    1. Ghrimm has been tasked by Queen Tithmel's advisor, his Arcane Master, with recovering certain dwarven relics, in my head cannon one of them is deep in Undermountain, recovering it would be one of Ghrimm's chief motivations for exploring the dungeon beneath Waterdeep
    2. Perhaps finding some sort of connection between Halister and the Orc Hordes that are attacking the northern dwarf holds would be interesting as well.

I'll post interest with a Aasimar artificer lock. Will have to work on a proper sheet and backstory later tonight.

Edit: And just realized that Volo's wasn't listed. Still probrably going with the art lock, but will go for a different race.

    Spoiler: Haram
    Show

Here is Haram's sheet and portrait in the spoiler. Mechanically, he is mostly done.

    Spoiler: Step 1)
    Show
    Step 1) (5 facts)
    - He was raised by the Dark Talons, a monastic order that (forcefully) recruits Tieflings and teaches them to fight 'the good fight', to fear and tame their dark potential and put it in service of a just(er) cause.
    - Haram was borne through a dark ritual. His mother was kidnapped by cultists and impregnated by the seed of some extraplanar being. The Order of the Dark Talon saved the woman and slew the cultists, but, in exchange for her life, took away her child.
    - Even though he spent a good part of his life in the monastery, he still kept contact with his mother through a written correspondence. Since he has left the monastery he takes care of her, always sending a portion of his earnings to the woman. He visits only rarely, but the meetings between the two are usually cordial. Haram wishes they could be closer, but his current life makes it difficult to find the time to do so.
    - Haram refuses to be a victim. Even though his backstory does bear some tragedy, and the Order definitely drilled survivor's guilt into him, he refuses to let that darkness completely define him. He does have (literal) demons to deal with, but he tries to present as a cheerful optimist in most situations.
    - For the past few years, Haram has been a traveling agent of the Dark Talons. When the initiates show enough promise, they are sent into the world to fight evil and repay their so-called debt to the multiverse. Haram takes the edicts of the Order seriously enough, but he is also a realist and not overly zealous. He does prefer to help people when he can, but he isn't necessarily devoted to doing good. Freedom works well for him and, even though he does report back to the Order, he also keep secrets from them.

    Spoiler: Step 2)
    Show
    Step 2) (goals, wishes)
    - Haram wishes he could break free of the Order and strike off on his own. He wishes to live free of the guilt they have drilled into him.
    - Haram wants to learn more about his father to learn more about himself: Who is/was he? Why did he create Haram? Is there a reason why they chose his mother in particular?

    Spoiler: Step 3)
    Show
    Step 3) (secrets)
    - Even though Haram told the Order otherwise, he can still hear his father's voice in the back of his head, whispering to him. Even though his daily rituals help keep the voice at bay, it is ever present and sometimes - albeit rarely - Haram likes to listen to those voices, even maybe act upon them...
    - The woman he believes to be his mother actually isn't. The truth about his creation is much darker than even he suspects and this woman was chosen by the Order to create a bond for Haram, to keep him grounded in his humanity, for if he gave in to his nature it could bear disastrous consequence.

    Spoiler: Step 4)
    Show
    Step 4) (relations)
    - His 'mother' Selina Al'Azaar. He has been in touch with this woman for his whole life. He supports her. He is convinced that she is his mother and harbors strong feelings towards her. The time they spend together, although rare, are some of his sweetest moments - moments where he can just feel normal for a few hours. He hopes one day she will tell him more about his conception, but he doesn't want to be the one to bring it up, so as to not stir up bad memories for his mother.
    - Oetychus Alamar, a companion from the Order. They were raised together, learned to fight together... and discovered romance together. Theirs is a tragic story of impossible love: they had to hide their affection while growing up and have decided it was easier just to stay friends since they've left the monastery. But there will always be a special place in Haram's heart for Oetychus. They've met a few times since leaving, on request of the Dark Talons, to carry out official missions. Even if fraternizing on personal terms is not encouraged between the Talons, Oetychus and Haram used to meet in secret sometimes. They've recently had a falling out after Oetychus asked Haram to quit the life and run off with him. Haram chose not to.
    - Keryna Andalou, fellow adventurer. A feisty halfling cleric of Sune. Her passion, happy-go-lucky attitude and general positive attitude are a perfect match for Haram. Most people see a monster when they look at him, but Keryna just sees a different kind of beauty. They've traveled a lot together, partied a lot, too. They are friends first and foremost, but as a team they are a force to be reckoned with, striking down what is ugly and wicked in the world.

    Spoiler: Step 5)
    Show
    Step 5) (memories)
    - The first time Haram met Keryna they went on a bender. They were drunk and Haram confessed some inner feelings. He'll never forget Keryna's reaction: she kissed his forehead and told him he was beautiful. He had never been told that by anyone - not even Oetychus had dared. He remembers clearly a weight lifting from his shoulders. From that moment on, he knew that he would be a friend to Keryna no matter what (maybe her goddess helped nudge Haram's affection a bit, who knows?).
    - When Haram was a child growing up in the monastery, he used to hide a lot in the stables to get away from it all. To this day, the smell of horse and hey always calms his mind, bringing him back to his safe space.
    - The first time Haram took a sentient creatures life, shortly after leaving the monastery, he remembers feeling an intense satisfaction, a blood lust. He is ashamed of it, but the thought pops up every now and again. He still has the same feeling every time he kills.

Humble Tien is nearing completion. I'll come up with a wishlist of magic items to outfit him and ask about their prices (since the DMG lists them in a range) later. But here is his 10 minute background, though truth be told I spent a lot longer than 10 minutes on it and I worry that it might be too lengthy. My apologies if it is too long a read.

    Spoiler: 10 Minute Background
    Show
    10 Minute Background-

Step 1: write five things about your character’s concept and background, five things that you think are the most essential parts of your character. You don’t have to stop at five, if you like…this is just a minimum.

    1. Tien was trained as an assassin from a very young age. Raised at the Three Black Thunders monastery, he was taught the languages of Faerun so that he could bring the justice of Fa Kuan and the Lords of Karma to the foreigners of that realm should they trespass against Shou Lung, or should the money be right.

    2. Tien is called "Humble", but that is a joke of his masters and friends at the monastery- he is anything but humble. Headstrong, overconfident, and a bit of a loud mouth, he was disciplined severely and often for disrespecting his peers and instructors. If it were not for his dedication and skill he may have been thrown out of the monastery years ago.

    3. Tien was involved in a drunken brawl with other students in public at the town nearest the monastery, and as punishment he and three other students were sent west to find the portal in Waterdeep and atone. The assassin's arts are a secret aspect of the Three Black Thunders school, and the brawl revealed to the townspeople that they were not simply kindly monks studying the Path of Enlightenment. Rumors say the masters of the monastery first denied the job the merchants offered them, thinking it the work of common thieves instead of assassins, but reconsidered when the price doubled. Each student was given a jug of rice wine to carry with them, with orders that none of them were allowed to drink alcohol until their task was complete, and instructed that they must work separately to increase the odds that one of them would succeed.

    4. Tien has never known life outside Shou Lung and the monastery. According to the monks he was given as payment to the monastery by his parents in exchange for medicine. His life, his family, and his philosophy have been shaped entirely by the monks, and he does not question their ideas of justice, honor, and killing for gold. He has done some limited travel around Shou Lung for missions and securing supplies for the monastery, but he truly has lived a sheltered life. All that is about to change.

    5. Dedicated to secrecy, the monastery of Three Black Thunders poses as a simple group of monks dedicated to the Path of Enlightenment and Chiang Lung style, which was taught by the water dragons to man millennia ago. While they do teach that style, their true dedication is to the art of the Iron Butterfly, a martial art mixed with ki magic used to assassinate. Under no circumstances is Tien to let anyone know he is an assassin, his true home, or that he is employed by merchants from Shou. He poses as a refugee from the battles with the Horse Lords, travelling the realms after living in Thesk, trying to find his place in the world.

Step 2: List two goals for the character that you, as a player, think would be cool to see accomplished in-game. During any session in which you take positive action to achieve that goal, I will award you an action point that can only be used in scenes furthering that goal. These Action Points are separate from the action points you gain by resting and reaching milestones. You can change goals later, though you lose all the accumulated Action Points for the goal you abandoned.

    1. I am proposing two opposing goals for Tien. Firstly, his goal is to find the portal so he can return home as soon as possible. He has never delved a dungeon, and in his mind this should only take a week or two, three tops. He wishes to bring honor and notoriety to his monastery, but more than anything he wants to come through that portal, see Thesk again, and drink the entire jug of rice wine to celebrate his return home.

    2. The second goal, which is opposing the first ultimately, is for Tien to learn about the outside world and outgrow his prejudices and simple concepts of honor and tradition. He is being exposed to an entirely different world with new people, ideas, and philosophies, so I think it would be interesting to see him decide NOT to return home, to throw off the shackles of his former life, and to find a new version of himself in the Forgotten Realms.

Step 3: List two secrets about your character. One is a secret the character knows, one is a secret that involves him but that he is not actually aware of yet. This will help me in creating plots that center around your character. I will also be creating a third secret which you as a player will not be aware of, so expect some surprises!

    1. Tien must hide his true history and motivations from the foreigners that he meets, pretending to be a simple traveler and a humble refugee. He is allowed to use the more esoteric powers of Iron Butterfly style only in pursuit of the portal, and when he does he must lie about the source of his magical skills, explaining it away as something many people can do in Shou Lung.

    2. Unbeknownst to Tien, he is actually the son of a wealthy and prominent noble from Shou Lung. The Three Black Thunders were hired to kill the noble and his whole family, and for the most part they succeeded. Master Roten, one of the most powerful monks in the monastery, took pity on the child and abducted him instead of fulfilling his mission and killing the boy. The Masters were furious and debates raged between them that nearly tore apart the entire monastery, but it was eventually decided that if Tien could pass his tests and learn the arts than he would be considered one of the family, not a marked target. One Master, named Dao, has always thought that Tien's existence is a stain on the monastery's honor, and has been attempting to orchestrate his downfall throughout his entire life. Despite Dao's meddling, Tien has passed every test with flying colors. One of the three other students sent to the west for this mission has been secretly tasked by Dao to murder Tien.

Step 4: Describe three people that are tied to the character though blood, romance or honor. Two of them are friendly to the character, one is hostile. All can do something useful for you, if you can get the situations to line up. If you like, you can include an enemy of yours here as well, so I have an instant NPC nemesis to throw at you.

    1. One of the students sent west at the same time as Tien is Gentle Mao, one of Tien's closest friends. He is a gentle giant who spends most of his time at the monastery tending the gardens of the grounds, but he is also three years older than Tien and even more skilled at the arts of silent death than the younger student. Mao has also actually travelled to Faerun before for missions, providing Tien with a map of Waterdeep and a few words of wisdom before they departed. Tien would die to save Mao, and to his knowledge the feeling is mutual.

    2. Another student sent west is Mei Sho, another of Tien's best friends. She is of equal rank to Tien, and the two of them have had an intense rivalry since they were children. They also have had an on-and-off relationship since their teenage years, constantly going from competitive but friendly rivalry to intimate lovers to furious argument, then starting all over again. When the fight broke out her and Mao tried to stop the violence before it got out of hand, but became embroiled in the brawl anyway. She sees this mission as a way to finally prove she is superior to Tien.

    3. The last student sent west is an enemy- Leng Fao. Tien and him have a rivalry, but it has always been a bitter one, spiteful and even violent at times. While Mao and Mei got involved in the fight that got them into trouble eventually, the true battle was between Tien and Leng. They have sent each other to the infirmary more times than either could count by being a bit too enthusiastic in training exercises. Leng has been clued into Tien's true origin by Master Dao and tasked with eliminating his rival once and for all in the Forgotten Realms, far from the eyes of Roten and the other Masters, a job he eagerly accepted.

Step 5: Describe three memories that your character has. They don't have to be elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor.

    1. Tien's earliest memory is being escorted through the monastery's garden by Master Roten. The old man explained to Tien that the monastery was like the garden, a place of Enlightenment and serenity that hid a dark secret. Tien moved to pluck a flower, but a vine from the plant lashed out and drew his blood with thorns, poisoning him. Roten then explained that Tien would grow up to become a secret assassin, trading justice for gold and bringing honor and respect to his new family. Roten was always caring at grandfatherly to Tien, but also never spared him from the challenges, difficulties, and pitfalls of growing up to be a killer for hire.

    2. Tien remembers the first time he killed someone. A criminal boss from a scummy Tong dishonored a merchant's daughter, and the merchant beseeched the monastery to bring the justice of the Lords of Karma to the man immediately. Tien was dispatched with Mao, meeting for the first time, to study under him and learn the arts. The two infiltrated the crime boss' compound and entered without anyone noticing, making it all the way to the man's bedroom without raising the alarm. The triad boss was in bed with a woman, and cheerful smiling Mao ordered Tien to kill the woman while he garroted the boss, surprising Tien with his heartless brutality. On three, Mao went to work, but Tien hesitated, thinking it might be wrong to kill an innocent in pursuit of the merchant's justice. The woman woke up, drew a hidden blade from under the pillow, and nearly killed Mao before he could finish his work. Tien jumped in the way of the blade, saving the elder student, then struck down the woman. He would bare the scar she gave him across his belly for the rest of his life. After their escape, Tien was beside himself, thinking he had failed the test, put the mission at risk, and nearly gotten his superior killed. Mao, splashed with blood, smiled at Tien and put a hand on his arm. "We all hesitate the first time, younger brother. And we all learn the hard way that that is wrong. Not everyone survives this test, but all who make the kill pass it. Now you have learned never to hesitate again, so the mission was a success! Let's go clean up at the river, then I will buy you dinner. There is a shop nearby that makes the best pork noodles you'll ever have!" The two became inseparable friends from that day forward, with Tien always looking up to Mao like an older brother.

    3. Tien and Mei had just their first apocalyptic fight. Thrown objects, broken pottery, and most of all harsh words that cut like blades. He was in his cell, trying to meditate and quell the storm of angry, hurt feelings inside of him when Leng Fao opened the door an peeked in. He snidely commented that it was good that Mei had learned what trash Tien really was so that now she could move on to a real man like him. He berated Tien, explaining why he was the one in the wrong and Mei was right. Before Tien could get up and thrash his rival, Leng closed the door and hid in his own cell. Tien spent the evening meditating on what was said and realized that Leng was right- he was in the wrong, and he did care for Mei. The words of the woman he secretly longed for he had ignored, but he had found wisdom in the tauntings of his enemy. The next day he approached Mei, bowed low, and offered his life to repay the the hateful words he had leveled at her. She smiled and lifted his head by the chin, explaining to him that the training they received could twart the weapon of any enemy, but you could only truly be hurt by someone you cared for. That night they were together for the first time, and she would always hold Tien's heart in her hand from that day forward.
    The Bear is Back.

Like I say in the 16, I'm open to it. Pitch me whatever would be fun. D&D is a game, and it should be fun. Be prepared for me to come back and say, "what if take the basic elf and trade this for that instead?"

Okay. I'll start with some long-shot requests, since they are pretty out there.

    Cloner
    Eliatrope

I don't plan on multiclassing between them or anything-I'd just like to know if either of them gets approved.

I'd also like to request Tabaxi from Volo's Guide To Monsters.

    I used 16, 14, 13, 12, 11, 8. Was that correct?
    +2 racial to dex, +1 to int, and +1 to int and con at level 4 (so 16, 16, 14, 10, 11, 12)
    thanks for the cloak!

    No to both those classes.
I love Multiple Man as much as the next guy, but pbp combat is complicated and hand wavy enough already. The portal caster basically gives infinite misty steps to a striker, and adds on a ton of desirable level bonuses.

In the spirit of my original promise though - have you looked at Tasha's? A bard, a bladesinger, or any number of cleric builds with Fey Touched as a feat could add Misty Step to their spell list with a 1/ long rest casting. Consider a variant human for a second feat, to take Eldritch Adept for Eldritch Sight to collect that detect magic at will.

We can refluff, replace the music components of either bard or bladesinger with something more steeped in arcane studies. Or perhaps a connection with the divine/ the land if you go the cleric route.

Nah-the idea isn't properly emulated by a few casts of personal teleports per rest,

Is Tabaxi okay, though? Assuming yes (since I saw Aasimar get approved) I'll have a character up shortly.

Do you mind if I refluff the bracelets a bit? Just to add some more character to them? Here's what I've got so far.

    Spoiler: Bracelets of the Predator
    Show
Background Item- Bracelets of the Predator- A pair of silver bracelets with jutting teeth on the sides. The teeth are all predator's teeth- shark, wolf, tiger, perhaps even a dragon fang. They are all sanded down and are no longer sharp, but when the wearer strikes a killing blow, the teeth become sharp and stab into the user. However, the wounds (and other wounds as well) instantly heal.

At work, just so I have something to ponder though. I am having a touch of difficulty coming up with Ghrimm's background, only because Undermountain is not a fully fleshed campaign, but a prolonged dungeon crawl. Now, I am not trying to disparage the adventure, but it is basically about going down into increasingly difficult levels of a widely known, and very dangerous dungeon, so besides the accumulation of wealth, recovery of a specific item, or relic, there is little in the way of outside ties that feel ... particularly relevant to us, as dungeon delving adventurers.

So my question is, how much roleplaying will there be with the denizens of Waterdeep during our return journeys and such?

Spoiler: 10-Minute Background For Heart Cliff
    Show
    Spoiler: Step One-Five Important Things
    Show
Heart is the daughter of her home clan's shaman. Despite magic generally being passed down the maternal side, she has not inherited the gift of Sight-but she's determined to prove herself anyway.

Heart is a trusting, caring, and overall, honestly pretty naive person. She believes the best in people and the world, and it's hard to convince her otherwise.

Heart comes from a family that is both big and welcoming. She's nervous alone-especially in dangerous situations.

Heart believes in words over swords-while her family wouldn't let her strike out on her own without knowing how to wield a blade, she firmly believes that most conflict can be solved peacefully.

Heart is in a relationship with a distant relative of Mirt's-a young man named Jonathan. He was one of the first people she met outside her family, and was smitten by his smooth words and handsome face. Unbeknownst to Heart, he views her as a side piece and tool at best.

    Spoiler: Step Two-Two Goals
    Show
Heart's home clan has diminished in recent past. With the passing of Agate, her clan's best champion, about a decade ago, they've been waning. Heart wants to strike it rich so that she can help her home, and maybe be the next storied champion.

Heart also wants to marry Jonathan. That's... Unlikely, to say the least.

    Spoiler: Step Three-Two Secrets
    Show
Heart's home has a natural resource, called the Everliving Springs. A small series of springs, their water is always cool and refreshing, and can (with regular usage) heal disease and extend lifespans. Agate lived to be 180-though some credit that to bullheaded stubbornness of not letting himself die. It's something that Heart wishes she and her family could share, but faces reality enough to know that public knowledge wouldn't end well for her family.

Heart's boyfriend, Jonathan, isn't the man she thinks he is. She views him as a noble, gallant man, who helps those in need. In actuality, Jonathan is a royal asshat-while perhaps not evil, he's greedy, amoral, and perfectly willing to lie and use others-like Heart!

    Spoiler: Step Four-Three NPCs
    Show
Jonathan Mortley-a merchant, distantly related to Mirt. A conniving, scheming, and all-around jerk of a man, he's also a silver-tongued bastard who knows how to keep up good appearances.

Velguardr-a druid with good relations to the Cliff clan. They're pretty sure they were originally an elvish man, but they've been alive so long they're not 100% sure-old memories fade with age. Velguardr spends most of their time in animal forms, rarely bothering to assume their humanoid form (that of a green-skinned, leafy-haired androgynous humanoid). They are currently without any Circle to call their own-but they help maintain the Everliving Springs. They agreed to accompany Heart on her initial travels away from home, and while they were initially annoyed at Heart's constant upbeat questioning, they softened, enjoying the young hopefulness of Heart. She reminded them that there are still young and lively people-a butterfly to Velguardr's ancient tree.

Stralight Crimson-an aging elvish noble who knows about the Everliving Springs. Approaching the end of his life, Starlight is desperate to maintain his grip on mortality-he's done a lot of bad things in life, and is fearful of the afterlife. Having had dealings with Agate in the champion's youth, he knew that Agate must've had some secret to living so damn long, and so when Heart came near (shortly after she left Velguardr) he enacted a plan to see what Heart knew. It was complex, thorough, and completely unneeded-Heart had never drank liquor before, so after a few fine Elvish wines, she spilled everything. Starlight is, even now, plotting to gain control of the Springs, with Heart none the wiser.

Tanis-a young orphaned girl. Heart met her in Waterdeep, where she attempted to pick Heart's pockets. Heart caught her in the act, but instead of reporting her or anything like that, she instead took Tanis to an inn to get a meal. Tanis was weary the whole time-expecting the weight to drop and Heart to reveal what she REALLY wanted. But after a good night's rest, Tanis awoke to a simple note on the bed.
    Spoiler: The Note
    Show
Good luck, kiddo! I left you fifteen silver pieces-try not to steal anymore, okay?

I don't know this city that well, but I bet there's some temples where you can get food, beds, and some honest work. If you can't, just find me and I'll see what I can do.

    Good luck!
    -Heart

    Spoiler: Step Five-Three Memories
    Show
    Spoiler: Meeting Jonathan
    Show
Heart met Jonathan via Starlight. The two of them work together occasionally-both the unsavory sort, so it works out. He was the one to get Heart drinking.

Heart remembers it fondly, for the moment. She had just left Velguardr and was feeling lonely, but then here comes this handsome young man, guest of a noble, letting her try new things and did I mention he's handsome? She views it as the start of a new chapter in her life, with a boyfriend, a new experience (that she isn't inclined to repeat-she had the WORST hangover the next day), and a fresh start.

The exact details are blurry due to the alcohol. And she doesn't remember agreeing to be in bed with Jonathan, but she must've said yes, right?

    Spoiler: Meeting Velguardr
    Show
Heart met Velguardr when she was seven, for the first time. (Well, actually talked to them-she had been near Velguardr many times before then, but Velguardr was an animal at the time, and didn't talk to her.)

She was lacking in tact at that age, and addressed them as "Mr. Greeny", but Velguardr let it slide off them. They're used to people not being polite to them, and don't really care generally-Mr Greeny is far from the worst they've heard. The two talked for a bit, as Heart was trying out gardening to see where her skills lied, and Velguardr gave her a lot of advice. They even tried to see if Heart had any kind of druidic spark, but to no avail.

What sticks with Heart more than the gardening advice, though, is what her mother told her afterwards. "Honey-you weren't very nice to Velguardr. They have a name. What should you do?"

Heart felt really bad about it, and spent the next week trying to find them to apologize. She was able to find Velguardr after she got her mother's help. And thus, she learned two important things:
    1) Never be afraid to ask for help.
    2) Always apologize when you make a mistake.

Spoiler: The First Time Heart Had To Really Fight
    Show
Heart has never killed anyone. She's sparred plenty, and lost relatives, but she's never seen a person cut down in their youth, and has certainly never taken a life herself. But, the first time she had to properly fight was after leaving the Crimson Estate. She was with Jonathan's merchant wagon, and they were attacked by bandits. It was only a brief fight (owing to the fact that the bandits were working for Starlight) but she injured one of them, and despite having been under attack, she spent the immediate aftermath crying about having hurt someone.

She knows she CAN fight-and is willing to do so more to defend her friends than herself. But she's never happy about it.
