If the Heterodyne boys are 10 on a 1-10 scale sparks, and Klaus is a 9.5, he's still overshadowed ... until he isn't.

    Agatha is an 11.

    Agatha is an 11.
Being a strong spark is one thing. The key difference between the Heterodyne Boys and Klaus is something else. The boys were charismatic heroes: they personally dealt with all the problems they encountered, persuaded people to play nice and moved on - they never gave much thought to any kind of structural stability of Europa. They did not even care much about running Mechanicsburg as far as we can tell. Klaus thinks a lot more about the grand scale and long term outcomes. He realized that a single traveling hero is not exactly capable of bringing peace to the continent. Ruling everything with an iron fist might not be a nice solution but it is a solution and his key rule of "Do not make me come to you." gives much autonomy to everyone under his rule.

They were Affable Charismatic - people looked to them because, despite being sparks, they were approachable and human. And they were Good sparks, not accidentally (or deliberately) creating things that should not exist.

Klaus is charismatic in a different way. He draws people to him because he's a Strong Ruler. He provided stability in a world needing stability. He maintains stability in a world that just came out of an unstable time. He keeps Bad Sparks controlled in his territory.

Poor Neena. Not going with her favourite prince, and now finding out exactly what the crew she has fallen in with is like. Zeetha is so going to enjoy giving princess lessons...

I am surprised Gil at least isn't questioning her motivations, particularly in sticking around Agatha. He knows she's a deadly sociopath, and he knows she was only working for the Baron until she could get revenge on whoever wiped out her crew AND he hasn't heard that this has happened yet. So why did Bang show up again and why is she sticking with Agatha? He must be so distracted by everything else that he's overlooked it, or there just wasn't room to fit it into the story panels so far (cork board of continuity madness and all that).

I'm sure Agatha hasn't missed that Bang didn't go with Gil though, she wasn't happy to see Bang again in the first place and made sure to point out that Gil was the only reason she was being tolerated. Now that Gil isn't around Bang is going to be on a very short leash.

Maybe I'm missing something but I don't remember any hit of romance between the two cats, other than she's female.

It may be more of a "There's another cat in my territory!" thing.

The careful grooming he underwent before introducing himself would be a pretty random thing for the Foglios to focus on if it wasn't a "make myself look presentable for the Beautiful Lady" scenario.

(The fact that said "introduction" ended up being just a bout of feral hissing is, of course, the joke.)

Its possible its attraction, its also possible the emperor of cats just meant the empress and is feeling decidedly odd over the whole thing. A rival, an equal, a lady, a cat that might have more than a 30 second attention span, etc etc etc.

I would argue we still have no idea what Bill and Barry were actually like during their heyday. Everything we've heard about their personality and attitudes has been second and third hand. The one first-hand scene we've had to date is the prologue to the first print novel, and that is set after the attack on Castle Heterodyne and Lucrezia's disappearance.

And if I recall correctly (the book is upstairs and I am not going to wake up my wife getting it) ...
    Spoiler: Spoilers for novel
    Show
... also after Bill is shown to have had some form of mental breakdown due to the attack and losing his wife and child.

As a result this also doesn't tell us much about what Bill and Barry were like, except by the direct implication that "Bill wasn't like this before...".

So this is completely off-topic, and I'm sure I'm not the first to notice this, but I just started yet another read-through of Girl Genius from the beginning, and somehow every other time I've read the comic I missed an amusing fact: Othar Trygvassen's very first line in is actually 100% accurate.

"Ah, you must be the villain's beautiful daughter."

    Oh Foglios, you cheeky foreshadowers.

Krosp is accustomed to respect by virtue of his station. He just met his first feline anarchist, and didn't like it.
And Agatha is now aware of Martellus' cat, and wondering what he's up to. It would have been better for Martellus to create a nice, obedient cat - but as usual, he's one part Sparky genius, one part blundering doofus.
