After hearing that result, Kynos carefully moved closer to the shelf with the transmutation aura. With the tipp of his sword, he carefully pried one of the chained books from the bookcase, reasoning, that securing a book with a chain likely was a good reason to ward it with something else as well.

Sir Kynos begins to move the book off, the shelf. As it clears the edge of the bookcase, the book does not fall, instead it, and numerous other chained booked lash out at the party!

A subtle shiver goes through all the chains, but the books look undamaged.

    Next, Sir Kynos.

With no-one near the chained books for the moment, Patricia takes a deep breath and exhales out a cloud of cold frost over the bookcase, coating it in little icicles. "Arrrrghhh! You books should stay put until I want to read you!"

    Spoiler: OOC - breath weapon
    Show
Patricia will move into a back corner as needs be so as to have a clear shot. The breath weapon does (2d6)[3] cold damage, or half that on a DC 11 Con save.

I'm assuming the room is kinda small based on the amount of un-discovered space on the previous map.

Eleazar backs off at Sir Kynos's suggestion, holding his mace carefully between his body and the nearest violent tome. "Kynos is right, Patricia. Maybe we'll discover a magical word elsewhere in the mansion to de-animate these things, and if not, smashing them later is as good as smashing them now."

With everyone out of the bookcase's range, it makes a few more weak attempts to hit the three still in the room. Missing, the books return to their places on the shelves and the bookcase goes quiet.

    Spoiler: OOC

Assuming no one else moves into its range, we are out of initiative.

"Animated biting books. This place isn't particularly user friendly. Does anyone else have a ranged weapon?"
Kynos said, as he readied one of his throwing spears, prepared to pick off the animated objects through persistend application of ranged violence.

"That's something else we might find as we keep exploring this strange place," Eleazar notes. "Or perhaps a pike or lance, something with a bit of reach so we can stay out of harm's way."

Patricia says, "Hmm, I may be able to wear them down. They're just books, right? It may take a minute, though..."

She fires a couple more bursts of mini blizzards at the books, hoping they work a little better than her cold breath.

    Spoiler: OOC - Frostbite cantrips
    Show
It'll need to make two or three DC13 Con saves or take (1d6)[2] (1d6)[4] (1d6)[5] cold damage. No damage on saves, of course.

Kynos held on to his throwing spear and nodded appreciatively: "Good idea. Frost should keep the rest of the books intact unlike a firebolt."

He waited patiently for the dragonborn to finish her task.

Mara blasts away at the bookcase from the safety of the hallway, sending endless plumes of frost into the room every six seconds. It takes almost ten minutes, and the temperature in the hallway has dropped by several degrees, but eventually, the bookcase shows signs of collapse. Covered from top to bottom in frost, the bookcase gives a final shiver, and one of the books falls to the ground, with its chain still attached. Silence and stillness fill the room.

"WHEW!" exclaims Patricia. "I haven't seen such energetic books since my academy days. You know me, I could do this all day. But I'm glad not to have to." She goes and investigates the book, giving it a tap with her staff. She also picks up the letter book and adds it to the set. Same for Mordenkainen... "I didn't like the way he was staring at me while I kept casting that cantrip. So judgy."

Eleazar snorts at that mental image. "Great wizards know when to conserve their power, right? It seems to me that any judgement should favor you, handling that problem without spending anything more valuable than time ... which we seem to have plenty of." A thought strikes him. "As far as we know, at least. I hope time isn't proceeding faster in the real world than it does here."
