"I know not. You should ask her." Myriam looks back at the scythe across her back. "It's just a scythe. I think. Maybe it's symbolic of harvesting or something? I was a farmer. I don't really like the idea of using a weapon."Last edited by bc56; 2021-04-02 at 09:41 PM.

That gets a laugh out of Anchor. "I did. Well, okay. If Myriam doesn't have any questions, you should probably get going."
Turning to Myriam, she inquires "Really? You don't seem to have a problem with fighting, and I mean, you seem more dangerous than a lot of weapons."

"I bid you adieu." The psychopomp fades away into nothingness, leaving the heroes to discuss things. "I guess? It feels more right to do it with my hands. I'm trying not to seriously hurt anyone, and I guess it just doesn't seem right to use a weapon." It doesn't make much sense, but people rarely do. Myriam shrugs. "It's just something I have, I guess."Awesome avatar (Kothar, paladin of Tlacua) by Linkele!

"Well, alright." As long as she doesn't object to Anchor's weapons, Myriam can eschew them herself, no problem.
"That should set things back in balance around Rivergreen, but what should we do about this house?"

Again, the only room of interest on the top floor is the sitting room. There's the recently moved armchair, the empty fireplace, etc. Perhaps a closer search of this room is warranted.Awesome avatar (Kothar, paladin of Tlacua) by Linkele!

First step, tear back the tarps!
Just because these things haven't been used recently doesn't mean they're boring.
But they're probably boring, and if they are, Anchor will flip over the armchair; it's the obvious spot for something.

The tarps have ordinary furniture beneath.
But when Anchor checks beneath the armchair, she should see a rectangle of non-dusty floor there, a section of floorboards, that, with the right touch, will reveal a trapdoor in the floor of the room.Awesome avatar (Kothar, paladin of Tlacua) by Linkele!

"Oh, um, yes, a hand would be most-" The lady flinches as a baby dragon nudges her. "Ow, ow, Hiedie, mind the horns!" She's helped out of the hole and takes a moment to brush some dirt off, and adjust the robe to properly cover herself. "Uh, sorry. The little dragons can be a real handful."
Meanwhile, our copper culprit scampers on up the climbing frame, bringing his stolen sausages to the two other kids that had been perched up there. Before you criticise someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticise them, you'll be a mile away and you'll have their shoes.

"You were right! I mean, there is something here."
After finally finding the catch for the trapdoor, Anchor opens it up to take a look inside.
And probably go down in, if there's no obvious reason not to.

Re: Outside 50: Meeting nature halfway

The trapdoor opens to a ladder. The ladder descends through what must be a disused crawlspace of the house into a cellar. The room has been furnished as a laboratory of sorts. Bottles of strange liquids and alchemical equipment line shelves across the walls. In a prominent place on a table sits something even more unusual though. A human heart floats in a jar of red fluid marked with red runes like those seen upstairs. Despite its condition, it looks almost like it's about to beat. "Ugh, what is that? It feels... unnatural."Awesome avatar (Kothar, paladin of Tlacua) by Linkele!

"I don't think so? He seemed fine." Myriam looks at the heart. "This doesn't feel dangerous, just wrong."
The runes on the jar seem a little bit different. The paint is older, more faded and chipped. The liquid within is probably a mix of blood and some alchemical concoction.Awesome avatar (Kothar, paladin of Tlacua) by Linkele!

"It's not exactly a binding like upstairs. Maybe it's just a magical preservative."
There's no way they're so lucky.
Anchor circles around the lab.
"Let's see if there's any notes, labels, etc."
But if it feels unnatural to Myriam, they probably ought to get rid of it.

Looking around, Anchor can find a desk with a drawer. The drawer is full of diagrams, including ones of the glyphs upstairs and another of the glyphs on the jar. A note in the margins of the second diagram reads,
Immortality formula?
Tested on rat. Mild success.
Modified. More effective.
Testing on self today.

"The person that fell into a hole probably shouldn't apologize to the person helping her up." Ambrosia muses with a smile. "But I think all parents can agree that children aren't always easy to take care of, least of all dragon children." She glances at one of the baby dragons as she says this.
Then she nods politely. "But perhaps I should give you some space so you can get dressed. I would like to speak with you though." She gestures to herself and then Thariza. "I'm Ambrosia, a scholar, and this is Thariza. She's a scholar initiate."

"Immortality formula?"
Hmm. That's an interesting idea. This wizard may have been more formidable than he seemed.
"I mean, he looked pretty dead to me. But this heart didn't belong to a rat - so whose is it?"
The formula itself isn't recorded anywhere, is it? Just these diagrams.

There's the formula on another page, a mixture of various reagents (which are probably found in this room). A smaller diagram of the jar. And a set of instructions. When complete
Feed half solution to subject, put half solution into jar
Cut out subject's heart, place in jar.
Seal jar.
Stitch incision in subject closed.Awesome avatar (Kothar, paladin of Tlacua) by Linkele!

"Let's climb back up and see how well his formula worked, huh?"
She motions to the heart, before tucking the formulas and diagrams into the back of her books.
"We should probably bring that, and smash the jar if anything goes wrong. I mean, you're a lot stronger, so if you wouldn't mind bringing it up the ladder?"

Wren nods peaceably as others point out the cave. Unfortunately, his current body didn't have the vision range into the right spectrum to see them naturally, but he's familiar enough with the runes to know they'd be there, and the right spell to adjust his eyesight to the right range was easy to both research and cast, and he does so now, murmuring the incantation under his breath and blinking repeatedly as the world around him suddenly changes color.
"Too bad we didn't bring any riding lizards," he says.Originally Posted by Lord Magtok

Re: Outside 50: Meeting nature halfway
[Caravan Search]
The cave wide enough to get a wagon through, tall enough for a rider on horseback, or more likely lizard-back as Wren has noted. The climb up isn't too difficult, following more of the marked runes through the trees and scree. It probably had been cleared by previous travelers. The Cave itself was dark, very dark. Squeaks could be heard, coming from bats from above. The sun had not yet set far enough to invite them out to feast on insects. The floor of the initial cavern stank of bat guano. Strangely, though, it wasn't too thick. Someone must have been clearing or collecting it periodically.~Amor Vincit Omnia~I have a Youtube Channel

"Thank you!"
Anchor goes to compare the writing on the alchemical formulae with the words in the wizard's journal. Perhaps there is more than one mage here? Though the two are obviously connected, to judge by the runes.
And after that, to shift aside his clothes to see if there are stitches over his heart.

The journal has several notes relating to "eternity," and a short journal entry about how the recent surgery is bothering him, but has been healing nicely. It's followed, a few pages later with a series of ramblings about how strange it feels to not have a heartbeat.
When his shirt is unbuttoned, it reveals a long, jagged scar across his chest, thick stitches of white thread visible in the mark. Myriam looks sick, then looks away. "He actually... ugh, that's disgusting. It doesn't look like it helped him."Awesome avatar (Kothar, paladin of Tlacua) by Linkele!

"-took his own heart out."
It's pretty impressive, being able to keep your body going without the heart connected to it.
But Anchor doesn't remark on that, for Myriam's sake.
"Either the psychopomp overpowered the link with this heart, or he's only mostly dead. I mean, weirder things have happened than him getting up again in a couple days would be."
"We should probably make sure."
She gets the knife from her belt, and looks to the spirit for confirmation.

"Open the jar and destroy the heart. His notes mentioned there not being a heartbeat, and there's clearly more going on with it than a simple preservative, right? I mean, you said yourself it seemed ready to beat."
First Anchor will look through her little backpack for a pair of gloves to put on. And then she will do exactly as described.
