    Thumbs up IC: Slums, Sewers and Dark, Dank Dungeons [D&D 3.5] [Eberron]

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Five days ago, a courier for House Jorasco went missing in the Rekkenwoods. Davdak "Rumble Brace" d'Jorasco, a young member of the House, was worried something may have happened to the messenger and so commissioned a band of adventurers to head out into the shadowy and archaic forest to see if they could locate the wayward message bearer. The Rekkenwood's canopy was eclipsed by oak, pine, and yew, which left just enough light for a diversity of shrubs to dominate the soil-rich grounds below. From the moment the party left the city, the rains began. Not a hard rain but a near constant drizzle. Not enough to make travel difficult, but just enough to make the journey muddy and messy. On the third day of searching, the adventurers found the currier... Or at least what was left of him. Wolves had ravaged the poor halfling. Luckily, the beasts spared the currier's satchel, which was found ten paces from the corpse. After a quick funeral, the party ventured home.
    Along the way, the band was confronted by three Karrnath Royal Swords - the national guard of the realm. The three men were suspicious of the party and demanded to see their official identification papers. The group hurriedly showed the men their papers. With a derisive snort, the Swords allowed the party to continue on their way. You had heard stories of other travelers, of those who could not produce their papers being assaulted - or worse - by the Swords. Karrnath was still a land locked in the war mindset. Martial Law was enacted early in the Last War and was never ended. Even two years after the war concluded, Martial Law remains. Perhaps this is just the way of things? Karrnath, more than any other Kingdom save Cyre, was uniquely devastated by the war. Wounds to a nation's psyche like that are not healed overnight...
    The collective thoughts of the adventurers are broken by the onset of yet another storm.
    The rain.
    The rain.
    The rain!!!
    It never ended this time of year.
    As you venture back to Rekkenmark, you take refuge from the endless sloppy mud by walking upon the conductor stones of the lightning rail that winds its way through the woods and into Rekkenmark. After many hours of walking, the faint call of howling elementals and cackling lightning can be heard. Hopping off the conductor rails, the party stands to the side to watch the behemoth zip past… Only it does not. The lightning rail comes to a squealing halt in front of the party. You can hear the members of House Orien yelling about a "feisty, unruly elemental." Many members of the house walk along the roofs of the lightning rail coaches, heading to the locomotive. Many look frustrated and angry. As the tram stays stationary for more than ten minutes, many of the passengers disembark to get some fresh air and stretch. One of rail employees notices the party and smiles, "Headed to Rekkenmark?" The party nods. The man looks over their road weary faces and the thick coat of mud covering their clothing. "Get on board, we will take you the rest of the way."
    After a half hour, the elemental screeches and the coaches jolt forward. The employees tell everyone to get back on board. The ride to the city is smooth and - thankfully - dry.
    Lucky for the party, Rumble Brace operates a small clinic near the lightning rail station. With hat in hand, the party informs the halfling of what had happened and returns the satchel. With a heavy heart Davdak accepts the bag and slides a hundred gold over to the party. "Thank you for finding my friend. Although he was not a member of the House, he was a trusted gofer. I am deeply saddened by his passing. Praise the Sovereign Host that," He pauses as he pulls out a vile from the satchel, "This was not broken. It is an experimental healing potion that is supposed to be twice as effective as Jorasco’s base potions. It was brewed by an elderly member of the House who lives as a hermit, which is why poor Yarder was sent out into the middle of nowhere.” He sighs, “Hopefully I can replicate her potion and help save many lives... That way Yarder's sacrifice will not go in vain." With a sullen nod, the halfling escorts you out of his clinic.
    It is a dark and cloudy day in Rekkenmark. It rained earlier this morning but not hard enough to wash away the grime and filth that has piled up in the bombed out slums. A miasma of foul air hovers over garbage-strewn streets. The reek of unwashed bodies, offal, and rotting refuse forms an invisible cloud that permeates everything. A rusty sewer grate spurts pea-green sludge that oozes down the gutter, and rats swarm in the alleys. Peasants hustle through the streets, grimy handkerchiefs covering mouths and noses. A figure wrapped in rags bellows, “Pies for sale! Fresh, savory meat pies! Get 'em while they’re hot!”
    The party returns home to their delightful... Fixer upper that is their tavern. The bones of the building are strong but little else is. The reward from the last quest would surely do much to improve the place.
    The party strips their mud-covered clothing off and changes into fresh garbs. They enjoy a nice meal and revel in the success of their last quest.
    As night falls on Rekkenmark, a big fist can be heard knocking on the door.
    “Pardon me!” The man at the door appears to be another destitute Rekkenmark peasant, a half-orc with mottled dusky skin and a gut that hangs well over his belt. “You have the look of trackers about you,” he says. “Might I trouble you for a moment?”
    He takes a seat at one of the tables, the chair creeks as his plops down.
    “Mung’s the name. I'm a baker by trade. Best meat pies in town! I’m sure you heard of me, or at least enjoyed a pie or three of mine!”
    “I tripped on some of the upturned cobbles in the southern slums this morning. Big gash on my arm and my knees were all torn up. I went to the clinic to have Rumble Brace heal me up. That Halfling is quite nice to us poorfolk. Always heals us at a big discount. I’m sure his betters look down on him for doing it. Anyway, I was in his clinic and… I didn't mean to eavesdrop but… I heard you and him talking about how you found Little Yarder out in the woods and, well, I need someone found too.
    You see one of my suppliers, a fellow named Algie, has gotten himself lost. No one's seen him for a week. I wouldn't worry, except that four others have gone missing in the last month. All ratcatchers. Two showed up dead. I don't have much money, but everyone in town knows Mung. Help me out and I'll make your life a lot easier. What do you say?”
    "So" Cass said curious, " Any details you can tell us about this fellow, Algie?" " Cass questioned.
    Cass was tired. It had been a long adventure last mission. He really wanted to just relax for a few hours. Maybe take bath. But no, life never seemed to give the crew a break. Trouble seemed to travel in threes. The man did seem desperate so maybe he will lend an ear before rejecting or accepting the man.
    "Not saying if we will take case as we are a bit tired, but enlighten us and maybe it will change our minds. ""
    "Algie? Good kid, good kid. One of the best ratchatchers there ever was. Real good at finding the juicy, plump rats. You know, the ones with the right amount of fat and muscle. The ones that go perfect in pies." Mung reaches into his belt pouch and pulls out a fat little rat. It squirms and squeaks trying to get free to run away. "Like this one. Chubby but not too chubby. Strong but not too strong. You know, pie rats."
    Aetgexe shifted in her barstool at the sudden appearance of the squealing rat, destined for a nearby dinner plate. While their Inn has been lacking in the food department, Gexe wonders what kind of reputation they would have if they were known to sell ratmeat pies?
    "Oh, your pies are well-known here, friend! In fact, we've been meaning to get something savory on the menu for sale here, ourselves... But we can talk shop later."
    Gexe smiles bright ly at the man, before sipping at a mug of Natrax' latest brew. Her mind wanders quickly to what else might be on the local menu. Ratcatchers?
    "These other boys, you said they were found dead? Local troubles, or something worse? Anything of note, to let us find Algie before we say the same of him?"
    With the funeral that the party provided Natrax felt that he needed to speak at least some words for the departed. You may rest, knowing that your last venture will be fulfilled. That this in the end would also help a lot of people was definitely a nice bonus.
    When they got in Natrax wanted to at least make a warm tea to warm up they're bones but the arrival of the half-orc expanded the plan. Oh yeah, you're pies are very good. Not like the ones from your rival. They still have hair in them. Natrax slides Mung a mug of tea and a cherry-smoke flavor, making sure that they are no other guests. That's on the house. Could it be that the rat-catchers that disappeared were perhaps on the same stretch? When multiple people that have the same occupation disappear so suddenly... That can't be a coincidence.
    Natrax a bit too anxious to sit right now and prefers to stand.
    Crouching atop a chair, Gomb ruffled his feathers in a futile attempt to stop shivering. Why can't life be easy? he muttered to himself. He really hoped they could lay low for at least a few days now that they got a paying job done. But this Mung fellow sounded like a useful friend to have and as far as he was concerned, rat meat was as good as any, so he resolved to join the others in asking the questions that needed asking.
    Much anything could help, really. Like, where was your Algie last seen? What does he even look like? Where were the others found? How much time passed between their vanishing and their bodies being found? What seems to have killed them? These sorts of things.
    The man practically glows when Natrax pays him a compliment. "You are too kind, sir. I am but a humble baker... But be sure to mention that to others. Could always use some extra business."
    Turning to Aetgexe, Mung smiles, "Business is business. I would be happy to work with you to make your fine establishment the talk of the slum!"
    The half-orc takes a big swig of the drink. A big smile draws across the man's face, "That's quite good."
    The pie maker stares at the glass for a moment, then asks, "What is that strawberry? Watermelon? Pear? Some kind of fruit. Definitely not apple." He downs the last of the drink and sighs, "Rationing hit us poor pretty hard in the war. Never really had much fruit. Just rats and the cheapest alcohol available."
    "Anyway," Mung shakes his head and tries to get back on track, “This was never the nicest part of town - as I am sure you are all well aware - but over the last month things have really gotten bad. First, the garbage collectors stopped coming around. Then the sewers started backing up... Now the ratcatchers are turning up dead. Vermin everywhere—and they’re getting vicious! Rats used to be foul-tempered but they understood the circle of life - they're born, they get fat, we catch 'em and then cook 'em." He makes a circle motion with his hands, "They all knew how the world worked."
    "Not so much any more. Over the last month, they have been bite-y and and brutal."
    “Algie... Little Algie, is a ratcatcher, a good one. One of the best! Supplies me with nice juicy rats for my pies. The plumpest, most savory little rats. Algie's Delights is what I called 'em. Lately he’d been talking about trouble in the guild. I'm not in the guild, they're just my suppliers. Someone was leaning on them. Hard, best I can tell. Threatening to hurt the catchers if they killed anymore rats. Weston, the guildmaster, might know more. He lives at the guild house on Spit Street."
    Mung looks over at Gomb and states, "Algie? He's a human. About five and a half feet tall. Good looking for a boy but been in a few scrapes. Nose is a little tweaked."
    "Wait, things are looking worse...the garbage collectors are missing?, " Cass exclaims.
    "And something's wrong in the sewers? Does anyone look to see is something has blocked a pipe or something? "
    Cass was worried, rat catchers missing is one thing, but now everything is breaking down. If this is a kidnaping, why grab the garbage guys?
    Turning back to Mung, "Your pies definitely have a unique flavor I can't get elsewhere. Rumor is on the streets, you are working on a new one, hope it is just as good."
    Cass turns to the others, "Guys, I think we either need to check the guild, the Garbage workers union, or the *ugh* sewers themselves. I don't like the sound of things. Even if we didn't take the job, something must be wrong here."
    Aetgexe's smile goes sideways at the half-orc's new information... "You're saying that the rats are fighting back, suddenly? The dead ratcatchers, were they eaten alive, or just run-of-the-mill run through with a blade?"
    Listening to Cass' concerns, Gexe agrees in part. "Sounds like either the rodents or some local thugs are targeting the ratcatchers. Either way, the Ratcatcher's Guild should be most interested in pointing us in the right direction." Feeling the light bulge in her sashling where her small amount of gold is secreted away, she looks back to Mung. "Though, say the guild doesn't want the trouble, after all... You're willing to cover our expenses to protect Algie, right?" Gexe grins a self-concerned smile, wanting to help, but not for free if they are in fact stepping into some local trouble.
    What local thugs would want to kill ratcatchers and garbagemen?
    Fergus spent his time back at the tavern immediately polishing and washing the stink and gunk off of his clothes and armor - despite everybody else living in the same filth that he did, Fergus is certain that holding himself to anything less would be a mark of shame for a dwarf!
    After finishing, and hearing the half-orc at the door, Fergus joins in with the others, taking his time to think things over and appear unfazed by Mung's plea for help. Regardless of his allies' certainly of helping, only an unwise dwarf would take deals as they are.
    "Somebody's been pressurin' the rat-catching guild, eh? Must be that blasted Laranak Clan, if ye ask me. Luckily fer ye, I've never met a Laranak that couldn't be punched. We can do yer job, aye, but risking our lives ain't free, and saving Algie's ain't either. Ye can do us some good favors, but favors don't buy quivers, as my great ancestor said! So what do ye say, a lil somethin' to make things easier?"
    Fergus then folds his arms across his chest, waiting on an answer from Mung
    Turning towards Fergus, Gomb makes a few happy chirping noises. Laranak Clan. Of course he had to bring them up. He then looks at Cass and Gexe and finally Mung.
    You're right guys, on all counts. That doesn't sound good, and if we're going to do this, talking to the guild people should be a good start. If they could give us a few names or the likeÂ… I think I could do a lot with that. He pauses briefly to remove a clump of dirt stuck in his feathers with his beak. That said, I wouldn't mind if you could help us help you, you know, a bit more. For starters, there's a bunch of questions we asked that you just sort of left unanswered.
    It's Natrax turn to present Mung with a beaming smile when he talks about his drink. It's cherry. And I can give that Right back, if you know any thirsty Souls, just send em over to Ye Ole Rat Hole. But I would really like to get my hands on some lemons. My father used to make this drink with lemons you see. When you took a sip of it everything in your Body curdled up. But on the other hand it was very quaffable. The young mans face relaxes with a nostalgic smile, but then it's back to business.
    The Mention of payment seems to sting Natrax a Little. But just that they had some Money now doesn't mean that they would have more in the future.
    You didn't necesarrily have to pay us in coin, but if your next batch could get to us that would help out immensely.
    Natrax faces Fergus. Well we definitely can't rule out that the Laranak are involved, but you know we can only really get them when we have solid evidence.
    Then Natrax waits if Mung can answer any of Gombs other questions.
    Cass give a slight laugh.
    Cass was growing to loved Fergus like a brother, but his obsession with Laranck clan was frustrating. Good man, but not everything can be them. Sure, there was that one time...but that was a coincidence.
    Aetgexe smiles to herself listening to the stoic Fergus' usual red herring ranting. A wonderful artisan, she enjoys his company in the basement smithy and has enjoyed having him slowly open up to the group these last few months.
    Gexe leans back in her chair, happy to let Natrax do the sweet talking after she broached the topic of pay. The others are a bit more gruff about it, but with the affable man at the head they're in good hands.
    "Thank you Mung, that will be just lovely for us. Well get started right away, there's no time to waste if we're going to get Algie back in one piece!" Gexe tilts her head for a second, before adding, "If there's anyone else you've got looking, or that may have any information for us, put out the word the Ol' Rat Hole is looking into it... But try to keep it quiet from the local gangs until we know who we're up against. We don't want the Toads hunting us before we even know to start hunting them."
    25 gold for each of them and the promise of a future partnership. That's more than what d'Jorasco gave them and they won't even have to leave the city. Hopefully, that is. Gomb makes a conscious effort not to vocalize that thought and suppresses the urge to start bouncing up and down on his chair.
    Gexe's penultimate comment sours his mood a bit, however. Indeed. Bodies are piling up and they have no idea who or what they are up against, and this sounds a lot bigger than a few wolves having some halfling for a snack. He doesn't feel like heading out just yet either: he's still cold and he's pretty sure the rain will be back soon enough. Not to mention that they were trudging mud all day long and it is nighttime already.
    I'm pretty sure even ratcatchers do occasionally need to sleep, Gexe. he says somewhat wearily. And I know for a fact that I'm half asleep. He pauses and stares into the half-orcs face trying to look adorable. Does first thing in the morning work for you, Mr. Mung, sir?
    Natrax gives Mung a hearty slap on the shoulder. If that isn't a deal I don't know what is. But we really do have to go ahead tomorrow. You see Gomb has still dirt in his feathers from our last mission and if he's weighed down like that he can hardly aid us. And the rest of us are also pretty sore from our walk outside of town but we will go to the ratcatchers first thing in the morning and keep you informed if we can find Algie.
    Natrax would have liked to go at this moment but Gomb was probably right. He did tend to realize he needed sleep a bit too late sometimes and he would hardly be a help when he's falling over or didn't realize someone sneaking up on them. Also the reward was pretty substantiable, perhaps they could get the place to become really nice with that, or he could get something for himself.
    Mung nods in agreement, "Thank you, my new friends." The half orc stands up and walks to the door, before leaving he states, "I will be baking pies in the morning, then out selling them in the early afternoon. If you need me, I will not be difficult to find."
    Gexe pouts lightly at the delay of her ongoing quest for glory, but leaves Natrax to escort Mung out after he artfully distracts her with Gomb's fluffy body. With nothing left to do tonight, Gexe has the luxury to spend her excess energies for some rare personal hygiene!
    Aetgexe cracks her knuckles as her hands heat up, "Alright, come here birdy, let me get you cleaned up..." Hot air gusts from her palms, dusting off the crusty feathers to reveal the lustre below. As the soils take flight, they quickly evaporate into thin air, leaving nothing behind on their home tavern floors. Once emptied of all filth, she mists the outside of his feathers lightly while making sure to leave the lower down feathers alone to keep her friend warm at his core.
    Once Gomb is so fluffy Gexe could just die, she only spends slightly more time than necessary running her fingers through Gomb's feathers before running her hands through her own purple-fringed-platinum locks. Most of the same applies to her own care, though she won't get sick if she soaks her hair down to the root. Purging most of a week's worth of grime with each lather, her ethereal hair tumbles back down her shoulders in full radiance once more. With the two most self-conscious members of the group taken care of, Gexe turns her attention to the others and their shared home ... She'll clean herself and her personal room before turning in for the night.
    Afterwards, she'll head upstairs and radiate heat through the walls to keep everyone warm tonight. In her room she'll heat her bed to kill of any bedbugs, remove her clothing, heat+clean all of her armor and clothes, and redress to sleep in her light leathers.
    Natrax is happy to escort they're new friend out and it seems like they did get a great deal out of it. He is a bit envious of Gexe's use of simple spells that he really couldn't get a grasp on somehow, but that didn't mean he couldn't afford the luxury if it presented itself.
    If it's not too much hassle I could use some cleaning magic too. Though I'm still staying up a bit, I'm a little anxious.
    When the cleaning magic had gotten rid of the grime of the day Natrax felt a bit better. His black hair with the single white streak took on that nice sheen and he felt refreshed. Thanks Gexe, that's always appreciated.
    Natrax indulges in the never-ending task of trying to get the tavern at least a little bit cleaner. If they had enough money they should just hire a bunch of magewrights to clean every inch of the place, but that would probably be too costly in the long run and there was only so much a single spellcaster could do. Perhaps a wand or something?
    On the next day Natrax wake up early and got some provisions, ready for the next day. He decided to wear his chainshirt but put his black coachman mantle above it. His bow would probably seem like too much of a declaration of war, on the other hand he was never truly unarmed.
    When the other go down. I have get something for us to eat on the way. We should really get going. Natrax nearly bounces, full of youthful energy while handing out some rations.
    Gomb waves a silent goodbye to Mung and hops off his chair moving quickly towards Aetgexe. Once he's all clean and warm again, he flaps his wings cheerily. Thank you! You're the very-very best! he chirps, his previous pessimism washed away by Gexe's magic trick. He digs out his gear from where he stowed it under a table, and heads for the stairs. Good night everyone and don't stay up too late, Natrax! Soon we'll be rich! He hops up the stairs and climbs into his nest under the roof, arranging his things around himself before settling down in the middle and falling asleep almost immediately.
    The next morning Gomb rises with the sun. He picks the odd piece of straw off himself and looks around. After pondering the matter shortly, he decides to gear up fully, dons his armour, picks up his axe, bow and quiver and puts on his backpack. Business in the slums is almost always dirty business, after all. Better scary than sorry (not that he could be truly scary if he wanted to). He leisurely walks to the wide window of the attic, opens it, steps outside on the broad ledge and pulls the window closed. Turning around, he spreads his wings and glides down to the street. He opens the front door of the tavern and peeks inside, just in time to catch Natrax's comment. I'm good to go!
    Gexe sleeps well, waking up clean and energized to start the day early. Getting dressed, she slides her marbles and lucky shuriken into her vest pockets, strapping on her scabbard and quiver.
    Unsheathing her rapier, she slides it's deadly wand out into her hand, checking it's last few charges before rechambering it and replacing her weapon. With a bit of wax, she rosins her longbow and slips it into the breakaway straps alongside her quiver. Knowing they'll be entering some unsavory parts of town, she leaves only a silver and ten coppers in her coin purse, slipping the rest into the hidden pouch of her belt for safe keeping... Strapping on her buckler, she makes her way downstairs for her usual morning sword exercises.
    After her warmup, Aetgexe comes inside and finds Natrax in the kitchen, who gives her breakfast before she runs to the cellar for her pack and footsaw, devoid of any overnight rat visitors. Coming back up, she finds her newly-cleaned comrades ready to go, with Gomb calling from the door. "Let's go catch us a Ratcatcher!" Gexe grins furiously, ready for another adventure!
    Using the cleaning magic to help to get rid of grime, Cass felt better.
    "Man, life feels better after a bath, " Cass said afterward.
    After the bath, Cass goes about making more dishware for the kitchen.
    A great sleep, and Cass is up around 8ish to check out the new places.
    After Cass goes downstairs he exclaims, "Guess, we see if the Ratcatchers guild can help after breakfast."
    The party wakes up to a brand new day. After a quick breakfast the party heads out into the slum. The air is musky and foul, even for the slum. The stench only grows as you head deeper and deeper into the ruined part of town. Surrounded by rutted streets, anonymous buildings and shadowed alleys, the Ratcatchers' Guild operates out of a two-story wooden building on Spit Street. The Guild Hall has a heather-thatched roof and (what looks to be) a large cellar. The building was clearly once a barracks. During the war, barracks of this type were constructed all across Karrnath, used to house soldiers who were waiting to be sent out to the font lines. Many were converted into field hospitals as the war progressed. Perhaps this was one such place?
    The Ratcatcher's Guild Hall's neighbors include a derelict shed (that looks to be the home of several vagrants), the simple home of a human veteran of the war named Anthond Benthey and a particularly noisy "quick stay inn" across the street. Several large casks filled to the brim with discarded rat bones sit outside the entrance. As you near the door, you see blue alchemical smoke billowing out. The smoke has the scent of pepper mixed with fried rat flesh.
    An emaciated young gnome greets you at the door. "Hail and welcome..." he looks you over once or twice, then continues, "ADVENTURERS! Brave of you to come all the way to the Ratchater's Guild House. I am Barnan Greenflower, official secretary of the guild. Are you hear to buy some fresh rats? I assure you, you won't find fresher rats than here at the Guild! Don't buy from our competitors, they don't have any quality standards!"
    As you look at Mr. Greenflower, you notice there is a pale blue and purple tattoo on his neck. The gnome constantly adjusts his collar, attempting to hide what is clearly some form of tattoo.
    Good day, Mr. Greenflower! Gomb greets the gnome cheerily, but he would really rather let someone else break the ice. If they play smart, this can easily get lucrative enough, and he has the distinct feeling that playing this smart doesn't involve trying to gain the man's trust through employing his less than impressive people skills. Accordingly, he decides to presently step to the side and give over the floor to someone more qualified. That's when the nervous attempts of the gnome to hide a spot on his neck catches his attention. Catching a moment when Greenflower is not looking his way he quickly turns towards his friends, tapping his own neck and then motioning towards the gnome's to draw their attention to the weird tattoo they are apparently not supposed to notice.
    The smell that envelops the party doesn't bother Natrax much. Of course it's unpleasant but there has been worse.
    When they met Mr. Greenflower Natrax smiles at him. Originally he wanted to go about the case in a more roundabout way, but it would be important to make his case clear. And with the secretary it seemed they met the right person. While the discussion Natrax catches a glimpse of Gomb kept in mind that there could be something with the gnomes neck, but doesn't try to get a better look in fear of seeming suspicious.
    Hello, Mr. Greenflower. I would love to talk about business with certain rats parts for a venture, could we get inside? After they get in Natrax continues. I would love to talk further about that but we at the moment we are here for another matter. I'll be frank with you, we heard that not only have your guild members been attacked by rats that seem more ferocious than usual but you have also been under pressure do stop catching your usual prey and some of your members have been found dead or missing? One of them named Algie? We wanted to offer our help in that regard, but for that we need all the information that you can give us. Where these rat-catchers all in a certain section perhaps? What seemed to have killed the ones you have found? I'm sure you're already thinking what our help may cost you, how about we talk about that after we have already helped you? If we fall prey to whatever killed your ratcatchers you have just lost some time and when we bring back some of your guild members you'll see that the owners of Ye Ole Rat Hole are not unreasonable business partners.
    Natrax hopes that he found the right words in the right place.
    As usual, Aetgexe forms the right flank of the group, keeping a general eye about the slum as they trek through the ruined city. The smell is rank, but no worse than usual these recent weeks... If they do find whoever is leaning on the garbage collectors, they may even help get this part of town cleaned back up themselves!
    Reaching the Guild, Gexe takes in the familair sight of an abandoned barracks, with particular notice of the veteran Anthond Benthey's home. If they don't find anything helpful here, it could be worthwhile to ask if he's seen anything from his ratcatching neighbors.
    As Greenflower and Natrax open discussions, Gexe smiles and keeps watch until she notices Gomb signalling her, pointing at his feathered ruff. Returning her gaze to the gnome, she looks closer at what their scout is quietly pointing out, an interesting mark on his neck...
    This place brings back memories of when he would deliver goods to barracks during the war. If this place is the same, they could even be secret room or doors. Not that he was going to search right now, that would be rude.
    Huh, the dude was a strange tattoo on his neck?
    "Good morning, Mr. Greenflower, what a wonderful last name. I think I met a Greenflower during the war, probably a relative, good chap he was." Cass said as smoothly as he could.
    As my fellows mentioned, we see there are dangers about. We wish to keep our city beautiful and ratcatchers and garbage collectors maintain that J'nes Nivie (elven for cleaning) that special something to keep it great.
    Greenflower smiles as he ushers the party into the run down building. "Welcome, welcome. Happy to help, happy to help!"
    The building has a musky, peppery spell. Quite a bit of that blue smoke lingers in the air. The lower floor holds the front office, a guild hall living room and a meeting room. The gnome escorts the party into the meeting room, which is about fifteen feet by ten feet wide. A large circular table sits at the center of the room. Atop it is a pleasant looking red and white table cloth. In the middle of the table is a stately glass vase, filled with fake roses.
    The gnome takes seat at the far end of the table. There is enough ramshackle seats for everyone.
    "The guild has definitely fallen on hard times. Four ratcatchers have gone missing in the last month. Two human males - Emos and Algie, a human female named Zenna and a male dwarf named Cabe. We found poor Zenna floating in the river and Emos near the lightning rail. Both of them had their throat slit.
    The rats HAVE been getting larger and nastier lately. No idea why. One of our other catchers lost a thumb the other day!
    The gnome considers your offer then bows his head, "I am just the secretary of the guild. I am not really empowered to make a deal like that. You'd have to talk to Weston.
    He turns to Cass and mentions, "The garbage! Don't get me started on the garbage! Two weeks now, it has been piling up! Worse in the last few days! The nobles in the good part of town - they say they are going to fix the problem but... Nothing every comes of it. Nobles?" The man spits on the ground, "Who needs 'em!?"
    "Anyway, Weston - the Guild Master - is really worried about the murders and disappearances. It has the other ratcatchers spooked. I am sure you and he can come to a fair deal."
    The gnome points you down the hall and says, "The Guild Master's room is down the hall and on your left. The party stands up and heads over. They pass by a common room where two ratchatchers are playing cards. A quick glance reveals one of them, a human man with long brown hair, is missing his right thumb.
    As you approach Weston's office, you find the door is partly open. As you enter the room, you are surprised to see Weston is not in the room. On the wooden floor in front of the guild master's desk is a big bloodstain, mostly dry.
