It is one thing to suspend your disbelief. It is another thing entirely to hang it by the neck until dead.

Verisimilitude -- n, the appearance or semblance of truth, likelihood, or probability.

The concern is not realism in speculative fiction, but rather the sense that a setting or story could be real, fostered by internal consistency and coherence.

Either way, in targeting the horny loners of the internet, the "I'm suddenly a successful streamer" is... actually quite plausible. Whether it was a conscious branding choice or just something they kinda stumbled into, I could absolutely see that being a thing. Heck, even the actual Youtubers I watch have viewership bumps whenever they do anything from the hornier side of gaming, even with extensive (and IMO hilarious) censorship. I can't say I was one of those that found the Suddenly Streamers turn especially needing of justification, but dang if this didn't do that for me anyway.

The v-tuber thing still makes the timeline kind of weird. I haven't done extensive research into them or anything, but I've read that commissioning a decent model can cost thousands of dollars, if you want full body, 3D, rigging etc. Last we heard of Marigold, she was working as a webmaster for her dad and eating ramen 6 days per week while paying off Momo's chassis.

At what point did she scrape together a spare ~$1000 or so to spend on a vtube avatar without knowing if it would be worthwhile? Presumably she somehow became a sort-of successful streamer first, then used her new income to commission an avatar, then her popularity spiked hard and caused her current complaint of 'too much money'.... I just made the story work, but I had to make it up in my head because the first 3 steps haven't been explained by the comic.

Successful yes, 'I have too much money rich' is a much harder sell. Erotic content in particular tends to be a high floor, low ceiling zone, in part because the market of people will to actually pay for such things is limited and the barriers to entry to the production of most erotic content (vtubing would be an exception) are quite low.

Most 'successful streamers' have mid-five figure incomes. Less than 1% are making six figures, and the number making 7 figures annually is less than 100 entities globally (some of which are conglomerate channels comprised of multiple people or who are run by much larger corporations).

Now, it's still possible that Marigold could have doubled or even tripled her annual income through a switch to streaming (ex if she was making ~30k and then started making ~90k). However, that's not 'I have too much money' rich, especially after only a few months.

In a world where AIs sometimes rent out their processing power when sleeping, I could easily see some of them making vtube avatars for fun and cheap money, as it would be quite easy for them. So maybe Momo even made that one

Well, it could definitely have pushed her from "I am barely getting by paycheck to paycheck" to "I actually have money left over after paying my bills and I have no idea how investing works because I've been so broke all my life", but although I think that's a plausible explanation, that's not really the impression I got from the relevant strips...

But eh, that's QC for you. It follows in the sitcom tradition of being set in a world where everyone onscreen makes about five times as much money as they realistically should.

I still have issues seeing Marigold being the person behind the mask. Even the "ow my abs hurt" version we see in the comic seems so different from Marigold to be a different person. As far as I'm aware, most streamers are still "themselves" while on camera, with maybe their personality ratcheted up a gear to generate energy. A complete personality transplant like we see in the comic requires acting ability that Marigold has never displayed.

I cannot draw a line from "girl who is too shy to go into a bar" to "girl who is a cackling over the top villain parody". I'm once again wondering if this storyline was orginally meant for Sam. Sam bringing Skullmaster into the digital sphere would make a lot more sense than Marigold suddenly becoming a V-Tuber.

Speaking as a shy introvert type person, being on camera or on mic is totally different than being able to see the audience back at me, especially if im playing a game or something.

Totally different for me (and I'm of the socially anxious type that would stand outside a bar like Marigold did). I dislike hanging out with people online nearly as much as I do in person. I'm more confident speaking via email or chat, but trying to put on a stage performance via the Internet would give me just as much stage fright as a live crowd.

And that's just doing normal stuff online. I can't even imagine playing porn games in front of an audience.

Wouldn't it have been nice to have a storyline where we see Marigold becoming BurgerOni over time? A way of making it less jarring by showing her learning how to stream, and how it's more difficult than it looks from just watching some Let's Plays?

I mean, i dont find it jarring at all. I wouldnt want to stream personally because i think im really boring to watch/listen to when im by myself, but ive got friends who are introverts like me who stream, and i know of streamers who genuinely suffer from severe social anxiety. Its not nearly as implausible as you apparently think, except in terms of how profitable it is for her.

AIs in QC don't really seem to have skill sets that are any different to humans. Which kind of makes sense - they're more or less just funny coloured humans, and just because Roko is an AI doesn't make her a qualified computer programmer, any more than I am made of meat and am therefore a qualified surgeon.

I'm sure that some of them are, but that's part of the story that hasn't been told. Like I said above, and how Rodin suggested, it would have been a far more interesting story to see Marigold start streaming, develop a way to make herself outgoing and appealing, and then maybe strike a deal with an aspiring artist who does her avatar for cheap/a collaboration/wants to be paid in World of Warcraft gold or something... But instead, here we are making it up for ourselves and being no closer to a canon answer.

Thats exactly who im talking about. Dude updates daily with his girlfriend reacting to a whole slew of videos all over the place genre wise, but almost always fun. Not vlogging or cooking anymore. its kind of a running gag to harass him about doing more apparently. Also finding the sauce for his thumbnails. :p But yeah, something niche but fairly popular like that can hit a big surge. Doing it as a girl probably draws in even more people, and of course there is a big audience for virtual avatars. Honestly, I think jeph found an acceptable justification. At least acceptable enough for fridge logic and hand waving the gap as this world and ours being somewhat different. I hope he leaves it fairly vague as to just how much she is bringing in, but even 150k a year would likely be a HUGE change to her financial situation and cause issues.

Yes. Jeph totally put the cart before the horse here. Marigold's conversion to BurgerOni, and all the attendant consequences of that change - of which the financial gains are merely one part - is something that could have been the most pivotal arc for her character since becoming involved with Dale (almost two thousand comics ago). Instead it got skipped and it's now being backfilled after the consequences have been revealed.

It really highlights how one of Jeph's weaker traits as an author - a seemingly complete lack of advanced planning and research - can interact disastrously with the serial format of a daily comic in which there are no take-backs. If you make a mistake, you're stuck with it.

Ok, wow, this new update seems like its treading on unsafe ground. Jeph has handled some sensitive topics with taste, at least, in the past, so i assume he has a plan here, but this seems like a dangerous place for the comic to go.

The arcs where he's basically using characters as a mouthpiece for his own past problems have tended to be slightly better worked out, but I'll share your skepticism on this minefield.

I'd be less worried about this potential plot if a human character were being used instead of an AI. Even if QC AIs experience depression in more or less human fashion, the consequences of that depression, physical, financial, relationship-based, etc. will not be the same. The mental health of digital beings is a growing theme in science fiction, and having read some of it I feel like using an AI as a human proxy is liable to be disastrous.

I have no confidence that this will be an arc. If it were going to be an arc, it should be about Pintsize, May, Roko, or Winslow - characters with established emotional turmoil who we might actually care about, not some unnamed rando who literally just walked in off the street.

It feels more like 2, maybe 3 strips where the punchline is "mental illness" and we'll move on. Again. Either that, or Jeph is slowly turning the comic into something like The Perry Bible Fellowship, where he uses all new characters every week. That... Would be odd but not entirely impossible, if all he wants to do is draw cute AI characters.

With the complete disguise offered by having a virtual avatar instead of appearing in person, and it's likely the voice is also disguised with some audio filters, the whole social anxiety thing can be completely lifted. And don't tell me Marigold is not nerdy enough to roleplay.

There's a lot one can nitpick about in QC, but "virtual persona is different from actual person" doesn't seem that much of a stretch to me.

    Okay.

In theory, mental trouble for machine is completely different than mental trouble for Humans, because we aren't made of the same stuff. A depression state for a human is a chemical imbalance in your brain that can have a WIDE variety of sources. Sometimes you have to learn to live with it, and you can't "fix" it.

On the other hand.. we did establish that robobrains are a blackbox for the modern scientists of QCWorld, so maybe it's the same problem there. Maybe depression is not something that can be "repaired", because there's little understanding of the actual softwares.

On the 3rd hand, we have SEEN emotion-emulation softwares for robots.

Wow, the art is all over the place, today. Faye's head keeps changing size, Panel 3 doesn't know how foreshortening works or that torsos don't compact like an accordion, and in Panel 4 I'm fairly sure that Pink-Bot's hips are floating in mid-air going by the size of that cabinet he's lying on.

Also, Faye keeps coming in to work with welding gear/power tools while wearing hotpants. This isn't technically poor writing because it's been long established that she's a dumbass, but it still makes me wonder how she has lived this long and still has all of her fingers and toes attached.

Actually, with that color, it might be a sleeveless, legless coverall, which is the worst idea ever? I mean, I spend a few hours (yes hours) telling students every semester that no, they can't come into the lab with open-toed shoes (and no, they don't get credit for the lab course if they don't read the "what clothes to wear" part of the documentation they got a week ago that's bold and in red, and no, I won't let them in if they tape garbage bags to their feet, either), so this makes me cringe hard.
