The ultimate quality-of-life item: 1 square yard of terry cloth. Not an official item, but a similar amount of linen costs 4gp. Particularly useful in Planescape campaigns.

A Fine-sized riverine +1 morphing/sizing/skillful/metalline/aptitude/warning/eager/manifester (if you're psionic) shuriken. The penultimate multitool, bettered only by the psychoactive skin of proteus (and much cheaper). It's what you need, when you need it, indispensable in combat and even more valuable outside of it. Nigh indestructible, and capable of overcoming most substance-based DR, while also being capable of chopping through solid stone like a hacksaw through broccoli. Note that you can use a properly-shaped net as a hammock, or a properly-sized quarterstaff to hold up a ceiling or to secure a door. A properly-sized and -shaped shield can be wedged into a hallway to block the whole thing off. And a large number of mundane non-weapon objects are used as weapons, too; just read up on the origin of the RL ninja and how they operated. And no matter what form the item takes, you're always proficient with it, and all of your weapon-based feats work on it.

A ML 8 psychoactive skin of proteus, as well. It's more powerful than most classes, all on its own. Expensive, but well worth the cost. At-will metamorphosis means you can become a huge number of creatures that, under the right circumstances, are vastly more powerful than their respective CRs would indicate. It also means at-will healing for the whole party (if you're willing to take it off and lend it out for a minute or two), as well as the ability to become any object you like. And if you're a construct (such as a warforged), it also means any animated object up to Huge size. Note the awesome immunities on constructs and objects, and the fact that you can be an animal- or humanoid-shaped marionette, as lifelike as you're willing and able to make it. Also, any object, up to Huge size, as well as any hardness up to and including 14; the amount of versatility on this item is insane.

A heavily-stacked weapon crystal (from the MIC) is very useful, too. Very cheap, and you can use it to transfer a ton of very valuable weapon enhancements between weapons (including the above shuriken). And having access to at-will acid, fire, ice, and electricity is pretty valuable for a large number of reasons.

How much would each of those cost?

The shuriken costs a couple thousand gp. A bit more or less, depending on what else you might want on it.

The regular psychoactive skin of proteus costs 84,000 gp at ML 7. Depends on how you get it to ML 8. There's a feat that improves the CL of certain items you use by +1. A [Good]-aligned PSoP gains a +1 for free via Words of Creation. A ML 8 skin simply crafted with +1 extra ML would cost 1/7 more, so +12,000 gp.

And the stacked weapon crystal depends on which ones you stack and what kind of weapon it's for (whether Least/Lesser/Greater/Whatever). But weapon crystals are incredibly cheap, so it wouldn't be terribly much regardless. Just add a +50% surcharge to everything but the most expensive item quality and have at it. Vastly cheaper than adding those special qualities almost any other way (especially if you're not a spellcaster and can thus do it using spells).

I have never bought an everburning torch and never will.*

55 sunrods is a far better use of that money. Especially since you can buy them a few at a time. And if you drop one down a well to see what is at the bottom, you are only out 2gp. And they make 50% more light.

*I guess I could join some game that uses 1/10th XP progression, and spends months trapped in a dungeon.

While some of these are certainly handy. Not sure if I would call them cheap. A beginner adventurer might have a few gold. These items are I think for lvl5 to lvl6 adventurers.

Instead of the standard everburning torch, get one made by a cleric or other divine caster. Slightly more expensive, but since they cast it as a level 3 spell it will not be affected by a regular darkness spell.

Angel radiance (BoED) or liquid sunlight (CS) costs 20 gp and shines like a torch until used. Just don't do that and keep it as a torch.

For extreme cheese, 1,800 gp will get you an at-will custom item of Psionic Minor Creation. That's one cubic foot of nonliving vegetable matter for an hour. Sure, everybody uses it for poison, and that's probably the best thing you can do with it (if you can make the craft DCs), but it's just all-around useful. I checked, most towels are made out of cotton. Also, you can make a wooden footstool, clothes, a giant door wedge, a pillow/blanket/hammock, flammables, latex gloves, etc. There's probably a thread somewhere about all the things that you can do with it. And that's just one casting. You can cast it multiple times and create modular components, or just stack them on top of each other depending on what you're trying to accomplish.

Also, you can technically create food and drink which will disappear after an hour. Consult your DM/doctor about that effects that will have on the creature that consumed it, but it's likely not pretty, and it'll probably be eaten by a lot of things that wouldn't eat or be affected by poison.

Double the price for a ML of 2 and make it a Link Power (synchronicity+PsMC). Now it lasts twice as long, gives you twice as much, and instead of taking a full minute to manifest it only takes a few seconds. And it doesn't even take anything from your action economy.

... I really need to get on my type 0 haversack list. In the mean time, here’s a thread where I asked this question for a specific character and ended up with a fairly general answer: https://forums.giantitp.com/showthre...lso-generally)
Excel sheet for 3.5 -- Native support for stacking rules and multiple forms; as lightweight as possible otherwise. (links currently broken, if you want a copy LMK)

Vestment of Many Styles, its called is slightly better for normal occasions at 500gp

Blessed Bandage is pretty great and at 10gp quite easy to keep a couple on hand

Anklet of Translocation is cheap and amazing for oh crap moments

Watch Lamp at 500gp is a great source of hands free light

Capsule Retainer(100gp or 300 for one that can hold three capsules) + Ghostblight Capsule (100gp/capsule) is a great way to always be ready for incorporeal encounters.
