Random Banter Rules:

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 12 threads before making another one.

15. If you can avoid dibs calling on making the next thread, that will avoid people needing to wait if the thread hits 50 pages while the dibs-caller is asleep.

In regards to the memory problem of immortality... I do believe that the current theory is that memory is infintly compressible. Once you memorize something, you never forget it, you just need the right trigger to bring it out.

But, since it's being compressed, it might not be 100% accurate.

Also, very time you remember something it's like making a copy of a data file and then replacing the original with the copy, so if something goes wrong during the copy...

Those are the current theories, as far as I am aware.

So it's not that you'll inevitably stop memorizing things or start forgetting things as you experience new things, it's just... Eh.

But yeah, that is a flaw that would need to be worked on in order to be truly immortal.

A few posts near the end of the previous thread mentioned... something that grows in bunches on a treelike plant that is, formally speaking, not an actually tree.

I would appreciate if Rawhide or, potentially, another mod states (ideally with moderate-to-thorough detail, but any amount is fine) whether that... bit of produce is okay to discuss or not. I heard it wasn't, around when I first joined the forum, but nothing I read in the publicly-viewable version of the rules implies that it would be a problem. I would absolutely tell you to join me in the cool new job (well, career, really) I'm trying for, but that would require saying what it is.

Also, in other job related news, after seven months with my medical office, they have just last week given me a fifteen percent raise and offered to transfer me to an office significantly closer to my house, cutting my commute time in half for more money. I'm in the cusp of leaving for a different state and they're doing a good job of making me feel bad about leaving if I get the full offer. Imean, not enough to make me not accept, but still. I really appreciate how they treat me.

Peelee, i know exactly how bad medical records can be. A couple towns over, some guy went to the hospital for some fairly mundane thing, checked in, everything normal... and they put him under and cut off his leg by mistake.

I don't deny that such a thing may have happened, particularly if the person in question had a common name so there may have been a similarly named patient who needed an amputation, but that's a very common urban legend...

Peelee, i know exactly how bad medical records can be. A couple towns over, some guy went to the hospital for some fairly mundane thing, checked in, everything normal... and they put him under and cut off his leg by mistake.

The lesson here is to never go to the hospital in Reading.

I was more referring to the lack of any centralized database. Mistakes happen, and while cutting off one leg when it should have been the other is quite the doozy, to put it mildly, if you live in Florida and go and vacation in Washington and happen to do into a coma, you're kind of up a creek without a paddle as far as who you're with being able to provide a comprehensive medical history goes.

Of course, that would mean I'd have to get into my complaints about HIPAA, and I don't think anyone wants me to go there. Ever.

Also, in general, make sure to thoroughly read anything the doctors give you to read or sign and make sure they don't do anything for or too you before explaining what they're doing and getting your consent.

If a doctor or other medical professional refuses to tell you what they want to do to you, refuse treatment. Request another doctor, go to another hospital if you have to. You can't trust a doctor who doesn't think it's worth it to tell you what he or she is planning to do to your body.

Especially if they want to inject you with something. Amputation is extremely unlikely but a doctor or nurse accidentally giving you a shot of something you're allergic to because you have the same last name as another patient is much more likely.

Frankly, I'm not even sure I would like millennia. Society changes, man, imagine being the super bigoted person in the year 4545 when your beliefs were perfectly fine in 2525. If man has still survived.

Reading Pennsylvania. Like, beware hospitals in the middle of nowhere, US to begin with, but Reading as a town has a special reputation for being full of idiots. One of my friends went to a restaurant there once, and the waiter asked them how well done they wanted their veggie burger, and it took them like 10 minutes to understand that the question doesnt even make sense.

Humans are social animals, so seclusion is not going to be an option for the vast majority of people. If you're immortal or live a lot longer than everyone else you're going to have to come to terms with how every relationship is ultimately transitory. It's going to be a matter of finding people to spend a small sliver of eternity with, process their loss and then move on and find some people for the next sliver.

Yeah, and if you're planning on going insane to help deal with seclusion and/or isolation then bare in mind you have no actual control over that. You could be drifting through space as dead stars turn to iron, perfectly sane for eternity.

Or in other words, I'm relatively intraverted, and I spent most of lockdown messaging everybody I could because video games have become boring.
