I have never met any teachers who went into the profession to have power over others, the workload is incredibly high. I'm sure I've had a teacher wm or two who was burnt out though, even if none spring to mind.

I'll fully admit that I believe at least some people get into caring because of it, and it's really easy for care to become institutionally corrupt because of a desire to make it easier (which means that the problematic elements get support from the vastly more common worn out elements). I have a list of issues I have with the care home industry that I'm not going to repeat in anything like full here, but they include things like 'every home should have a pet that residents can interact with' and 'the care receiver, not the caregiver, should have control of the radio station'. My views on in-home care are less will developed because I have less experience with it.

Like, I have no experiences like what you've described your cousin going through, but unlike with teachers I think it's not only believable, but potentially even likely.

Fair enough. By "our society" I meant 21st century America, and I eyeballed it based on 75-80 years life expectancy and 18-20 years of education, counting pre-k and college. Incidentally, according to google it is in fact right about 1 in 100 Americans who work as teachers at the k-12 level, or 1 in 80 if you include college professors.

Its kind of an interesting thought exercise to imagine that hypothetical 100-person spread of typical population and ponder who you would assign to what professions. Do you pull your teachers from the 90th percentile, or do you need to save those for doctors and engineers?

Very sorry to hear this Rater. Your cousin deserves better care. It sounds like you've had a bunch of crap carers (for too long) and it really sounds like the company providing them is at fault. I hope your family finds another place that offers a proper service, at an affordable cost.
It's bad enough in "normal" times to make sure family that need support get it, and only worse currently. I know where I live there's always discussions about what places sound good and those to avoid between my mum and her social group. My family has needed support for my grandparents in the past, and now its getting to the stage that my mum (and the parents of friends) are reaching the age that they need (now or in the near future) in-home support or a nursing home.

Best wishes as you and your family work through this.

I should get rid of 2-4 of my plushies. I got a couple of pony plushies in part to replace them and 2 of my old plushies have been falling apart for years now, but it still feels difficult to let them go. I've had those since I was a kid and with elementary school and high school being **** those 2 plushies probably helped me get through that. Or maybe I'm assigning more importance to them in hindsight, I'm not sure. I could maybe get them fixed instead, but they're really falling apart and it just seems too much effort and unnecessary to do so.

Damn, thinking about throwing them out actually gives me that choking feeling in my throat. I think I'll keep them around for a few more weeks and then toss them into a textile bin at some point. Out with the old, in with the new, moving on etc. etc.

Form I say this with 100% certainty.

If you feel bad about throwing them out, do not do that. It is that simple. If it is too much to fix them, but hurts to much to throw them out, then you just hold onto them.

If you do, ultimately, decide to get rid of them, don't "just" throw them out. Thank them for everything they have done, Marie Kondo style. They gave you joy, and it is time for them to move on.

But seriously. You're under no obligation to get rid of them.

While I don't agree with everything that Zodi said, I very much agree with this. If you have an attachment to then there's no need to their them out no matter the state they're in.

Finally got to Planet of the Spiders, a.k.a Doctor Who and the Psychic Space Bhuddists. Five years with of stories we the Third Doctor and I'm not entirely certain I'm ready to go back to the Baker years. This session feels incomplete, Delgado's death robbed it of it's Master sorry and it feels like the Doctors arc with him had stopped before it's end.

Experiment: improvisational downsizing of previous attempt at lemon rice sop. Using chicken flavor base instead of chicken broth because we're out of broth.

All previous ingredients cut in half, except for the salt which is proportionately a larger ammount. I also added a few drops of honeyóthe bottled lemon juice we have is a bit bitter and salt and honey can mitigate that.

May have used too much lemon juice, but it's not bitter so progress.

That's a good point. I think I do want to do away with them in time, put them into a textile recycling bin so they get remade into a plushie for someone else (I like that thought, so that's what I'll tell myself). But I can at least just put them on a shelf for awhile instead of throwing them away immediately. Maybe I can give them a proper sendoff when I'm ready, a little ritual of some sort.

100% this. Contextualizing it as passing them on to become someone else's new friend, and having a little, personal send off for them thanking them for the good they brought you. It's important.

Settled into the hotel! Did a quick lookup on how the trip to the training facility will be tomorrow, looks like I'm barely over 3 miles away for a balmy 7 minute drive. Which is nice since I have to wake up at the crack of dawn for these people.

I'd be okay with living in the back of a solar-powered self-driving van?

Just keep driving around the country only stopping when I want or need to.

That's obviously not viable in real life for a thousand and one reasons, but...

Honestly, that's a thing with me. I'd like to live forever, I'd like to be a dragon, and I'd like to have a place for my stuff and the ability to live a life without everyday stress.

Island, cottage, back of a van, ghost ship, magic tent that's bigger on the inside, and people don't notice it if I don't want them to, TARDIS...

...Serious question: Would immortality be more palatable if you had equally immortal friends/family and the means to travel to any point in time across infinite parallel realities? Never have to worry about being stranded in a void, never have to worry about running out of things to do.

...Wait, I think I've asked that before.

It's just... No worries, no responsibilities, no deadlines, no anxiety, and existential dread. You're working? You're doing things you want to do for your own fulfillment. Don't feel like doing anything today? That's fine. Wanna go on a long walk and then set up camp at wherever you happened to end up before walking back in the morning? Go for it. Wanna go back in time and watch the original Star Wars on opening night in the theatre?

I find that imagining a situaiton where stress is impossible to be relaxing.

Serious question: Why do you care how other people value immortality? It shouldn't affect how you value it at all, but you keep trying to rephrase and slightly change things to see if you can get others to agree or find it more palatable. But you don't really need to because it's irrelevant to how you value it.

You don't have to answer, btw, it's fine being rhetorical.

I believe I've previously stated that if I actually discovered a reliable means of literal immortality I'd be obligated to share it.

There's no point in sharing it if there's no situation where people would want it. You can't force that on people. It's like medicine, even if someone is objectively wrong for refusing treatment they still have the right to.

Beyond that, I in general just like to get a feeling for other people's perspectives on things.

....who said anything about forcing it on people? Sharing knowledge doesn't mean forcing people to accept the knowledge.

Ethically it would have to be an all-or-nothing thing: If only some people are immortal, and the existence of immortality is a known phenomenon, then either the immortals would become a ruling class, or they'd be a discriminated-against minority.

Or at least what's what all of human history has taught me. But I'm a cynical ******* so grain of salt.

Of course, I could keep it secret, only share it with my closest friends and then just spend an eternity hanging out with my immortal bros and bro-ettes... But then I'd be letting people die when it was within my power to save their lives and that would probably be the worst posisble thing I could do.

Granted, a form of immortality that isn't viable for mass production, such as an "only certain people can be immortal" or "only so many immortals can exist at once" situation hoarding it becomes less morally reprehensible, but I'm assuming it's not arbitrary for the sake of discussion.

The amount of other things you'd have to add to make Immortality/invincibility/invulnerability ETC. with no ability for me to turn it off appealing make it such a different question there's no point in me answering.

So, no. I will not take Immortality with no off-switch, even if it means I can never be harmed again, never have to eat or drink again, could exist without issue in the vacuum of space, ETC.

Iíd rather not get into another immortality argument, but regarding your first point about driving around the country in a truck, I get the appeal. I like thinking about what Iíd do if it didnít have to work.

Id probably summer in Hull MA and winter in Vermont near the mountains so I could snowboard 100 days a year and just do that until I died.

29 weeks total. I left yesterday, my toddler kept saying "daddy home?" every time he heard a noise outside the house, and when my wife snuck into his bedroom after he went to sleep to charge his tablet, he piped up and said "here daddy!"

My heart has broken every time she told me this. Thank the seven heavens for cellphone telephone video calls.

Peelee just doesnt want to frighten us all by admitting he now works for the literal alphabet, and will be assuming direct control of all our typos.

Fun fact! If you want to find out what I'll be/where I currently am, all you need to do is become a moderator here. They get all the juicy details.

    Explanation here.

Most pronouns are fine for me. Just don't try to mix them.

Nah Iíll just randomly guess stuff and in 10 years when you let it slip and Iíll be all ďah yes, just as I suspectedĒ even though nothing I guess was even in the ballpark.

Unless that was a serious offer, Iíll totally boss around the peasants moderate this community with my fair yet firm hand.

The problem with that is anyone with an ulterior motive like that would absolutely not be allowed to be in a position where they could get that resolved.
The stars predict tomorrow you'll wake up, do a bunch of stuff, and then go back to sleep.~ That's your horoscope for today.

The admins make the offers/put out the calls. As far as forum staff goes, I'm the low man on the totem pole.

Okay, fair, I misspoke when I phrased it as "problem".

Do you not get to go home weekends to visit, or is the travel a bit far even for an American?
