    Spoiler: To Capitol Assurances
    Show
    Dear Shackle,

Alas, your estimations on matters political and topical surely match your talents in the field of arcane theosophy. The First Princess is unfortunately quite occupied with the upcoming war against the Tangle Geist, and although she continues to express her effusive spirit at the prospect of working alongside such a vaunted master of magic, that grand day will have to be delayed until such a time as the Court can commit an appropriate amount of resources and personnel to the task.

However, we believe that day is not long in its arrival. Ask the Court again in two months time for support in undertakings, and perhaps the answer you receive may be more to your satisfaction. It is the First Princess' ardent hope that the matter of the Geist will be largely resolved by that point in time, and we may all look towards a comparatively bright future together. The city of Sethennai will require leaders with strong wills, and few other names conjure authority in the Cloven Court so much as yours. The Court and Capitol Assurances standing in solidarity would certainly be a formidable force, I'm sure you would agree.

    Until the promised day,

The Bureau of Olivia von Draum, Vicomtesse Ardennes, Ministre de Correspondance for the First Princess

    Spoiler: To the Painters Guild
    Show
    Dear Washington Albers, Painter's Scribe,

Our most sincere condolences for the delay in our reply to your most illustrious patron. The Cloven Court would be far remiss to deliberately ignore such praise, and Her Serene Highness has asked me to share her most effusive thanks for the care taken in its creation and delivery. The Painter's Guild does the Valmontese great honour with its oeuvre.

To commemorate our nascent friendship, the Court is extending an opportunity to you. The Tangle Geist is a threat, yet its destruction promises reward to those brave and bold enough to seek it out. The Cloven Court aims to be the first to attain this, yet we have no interest in payment in blood or glory. Our needs are based in territory, in land and honour. At the risk of being blunt, our people need homes and even the quarters we have earned this season are inadequate for the full scope of the incoming exodus of Valmontese settlers. We are prepared to sign over a considerable amount of the fame and fortune earned in the slaying of this beast for comparatively little risk. Whatever forces you have at your disposal against the forces of darkness will see more than their fair due - the Guild would rise for such a great deed.

In exchange for this opportunity and in keeping with our protocols, the Court would like to inform you that we plan on expanding into Palatine in the coming months. It's been made alarmingly clear to the First Princess that Sethennai's upper circles are at each other's throats, and a stable influence atop the hill would surely help everyone in the city. We are sanguine that such a declaration will be met in the same spirit of generosity as the trust extended along with the information. The Court and the Painter's Guild standing in solidarity would certainly be a formidable force, I'm sure you would agree.

We hope to hear from you soon,

The Bureau of Olivia von Draum, Vicomtesse Ardennes, Ministre de Correspondance for the First Princess

So it's a simple offer. If you send some Military my way this turn to hit the Geist, I will make sure that you see a portion of the VP prize and Hemminghock bounty when it's killed. I also promise here OOC to put any Mil you send last, meaning that I would take 100% of the casualties before you ever took any damage for stats you decided to send. In return, you get public credit (VP) and some of the bounty (Eco).

And I'm taking [64] this turn. I hope that's not a problem for ya!

Since the Geist can probably read your mail but likely not mine, I suggest writing back in a basic yes/no code to protect your anonymity and keep me as the primary target of aggression. If you are interested in sending your troops to the front this turn, simply use the word 'eclipse' in your next message.

    Show
    Dear Valthan, Steward of Nazhar,

Though it would be dishonest for me not to convey the disquiet of the First Princess at the news you offer at this hour, Her Serene Highness has asked me to thank you for reaching out to the Cloven Court on behalf of your master and provide us with the spare courtesy of telling us that no help is forthcoming. This is no small gesture, as even a message of support risks drawing the ever-hungry gaze of the Geist. We can only hope that the Court's imminent war will divert them while your order is reconstituted.

We understand well enough that occasionally protecting one's people and the integrity of one's vision is a paramount choice. There may be no higher cause than loyalty in this life or the next.

    Until we speak again,

    Show

A small easel-completely blank-is left as a gift at the Guildhall's doorstep. While perhaps not a particularly ostentatious gift, the easel self cleans, and if and individual touches their finger to it and thinks of a colour, they find they can "paint" it on the easel with whatever digit(s) is/are touching the canvas. When a particular spectrum of light is shone on the easel it shimmers with the glyph for "progress". The sigil is a soft lilac colour. Once paint of any kind is applied to the easel the glyph morphs into the following messege, self translating into Sethennaii:

Greetings and hail to your future new abodes, Most Artful Painter's Guild!

Just as our borders swell and renegotiate in earnest, with yours being far and away the superior expansion of course, it would seem a prudent action to engage in discourse as to the proposed splitting, halving and or divvying it up as it were of the extant territories set to form a border between us. To this end, we offer a simple proposal: the eastern snarl of land that borders the Palatial district is yours. The Vault and the Painters guild shall cure the dragon of their illnesses. We've yet to ever welcome such resplendent individual into the Vault. Naturally, if such a thing were to happen its only normal for such a storied organization as the Painters Guild to act as stewards over the Bazar? As a sign of good faith in our negotiations we're willing to make our communications towards the integration of the Grand Bazar into our mutual domains public to you, if you desire, though if should like to negotiate on both of our behalves and make such missives public knowledge the Vault, we would not begrudge you primacy in taking the initiative with starting negotiations with the ailing Wyrm.

Additionally as a matter of principal, we would like to offer you the Vault's access to what rumours it has been party to this season. While we're far from able to truly delve into the ruckus that is Sethennai's grapevine SCAR has deemed it a priority that the offer of information be extended to you in the interest of mutual cooperation. As a sign of good faith, we shall present you forthwith of the former half of the rumours we are party to this season. Perhaps we may negotiate a modest fee in return for the latter half, though with so many varied sources of intelligences & fact about this season one could hardly hold such a venerable institution as the Painter's Guild in blame for refusing such an offer. Regardless, as promised, you'll find the relevant What follows are some of the gossips that have spread through Sethennai:

The noble families that are supposed to run the city and elect a new Prince if something like this happens are in absolute disarray. All of their most important members were at court with Cael during the Solstice, and the second-stringers left behind are mostly either busy killing each other over who gets to be the new paterfamilias or terrified of each other, or the Hierophant, or the Blade, or whoever else they blame for the prince’s disappearance.

At the last full moon everyone in the Grand Temple was cleansed with a ritual powerful enough to burn off every hair on anyone inside and make them commit up every impurity in their bodies. It hasn’t been that bad since, but every insect or pest that tries to get inside seems to waste away and die within 7 minutes.

Finally, should you desire any help in moving into your new abode, please do inform us. While we Vaulters may lack the keen aesthetic sensibilities of you Painters, we there is something to be said for our economization of space.

    Spoiler: The Knights Null
    Show

A litter of hyenas is left at the steps of the Knights Null chapter house. There is: an all black runt born with one eye, a white one that lacks its species’ chameleonic hide, a rusty-brown one that looks to be missing a canine when it yawns , a calico pup born with triangular/cropped ears through some quirk of genetics, and blue one (a female, clearly the pack matriarch or Alpha for how she nibbles on the others) that has little galaxy motes a-swirl where her spots would be. All five baby hyenas come with separate instructions for their welfare and care, along with charcoal smudged diagrams that show how their size will scale as they grown older-roughly shoulder height to a humanoid after their first year. When they scamper along the cobblestones outside the chapter house, the glyph for "respect" manifests on the stone before fading into a thought-read missive.

Hail to the fair and just Knights Knull whose business acumen is demonstrably the envy Sethennai-over,

Much is abounds this season. The Court would ask for the Vaults aid while weakening us to the very thing it purports to destroy. What make of you this conundrum, for surely something like the Tangle should demand a response for the death they've enacted, yet we'd not like to see ourselves to the position of those at our south for forfetting our axes this season. We would have your thoughts on the matter: are the things that would hold us together stronger than the fear that cleaves us from acting as one? The S'Letaunntic peoples would seek your counsel on this.

Additionally, while it was discussed last season, an agreement was never fully ratified between ourselves as to the notion of the Vault updating you on the various goings-on in Sethennai. As a matter of the earnest trust we hold for you, we would like to offer you the Vault's access to what rumours it has been party to this season. While we're far from able to truly delve into the ruckus that is Sethennai's grape-the glyphs stumble in translation here, stuttering for a moment-garepnive, SCAR has deemed it a priority that the offer of information be extended to you in the interest of mutual cooperation. A sort of aping of the goodwill coalition that Valmont negotiates, if you will. As a sign of good faith, we shall present you forthwith of the former half of the rumours we are party to this season. Perhaps we may negotiate a modest fee in return for the latter half, though with so many varied sources of intelligences & fact about this season one could hardly hold such a venerable institution as the Knights Null in blame for refusing such an offer-especially given your clear mastery of the abacus. Regardless, as promised, you'll find the relevant information below. We hope it can be of some use to you. What follows are some of the gossips that have spread through Sethennai:

    Spoiler: The Painted Doctors
    Show

A box thats actually three containers is delivered to Painted Doctors. The glyph for "progress" shines a verdant green, yet is paradoxically discovered to have been burned into the wood. When the slat of narrow wood is removed from the "top" of the box, three smaller cubicles are revealed underneath. The first contains a small red flower that, when blended and injected directly into one's veins or arteries causes the heart to pump well in excess of physiological norms for a full Sethennai day. Rudimentary tests reveal an almost one hundred percent lethality in comedowns owing to cardiac infarctions as a side effect, with those that survive having crippling hypertension and myocarditis when not hopped up on the "red juice". The Second is a single stick of chalky white stone that extends to roughly a forearms proportions when removed from the box. When ground into a paste (enough to coat a local tough and rake that work for the doctors) it calcifies the flesh its applied to without adding any extra weight, though the petrification of joints does mess with articulation of any sockets its applied to. Curiously, the stone-paste swells to accommodate external changes in physiologies, such as increased size, and what small samples are leftover reveal that a large number of fauna (mammals and reptiles mostly) can take the paste as well. The third is a tuber-noted with a warning sign as "leech root", initially observations show its been desiccated desiccated but quickly comes to life when some blood is dripped on it. The sample manifests a maw with concentric teeth when touching something alive, then grows another finger length when a tongue snakes out to lap up any blood the teeth might have drawn. It requires callipers to remove from the box safely. When grown to the length of finger to elbow it starts to wail, laugh and gibber in terrible harmony with itself. When submerged in various alchemical reagents, the terrible root-song takes on different cadences: Whale song that builds to ruptured ear drums when submerged in saltwater from the Harbour, an amazing, hauntingly beautiful conversation in whispers that causes the user to feel nothing but bliss when the root is submerged in manticore vital fluids & a hym that projects a functional abjuration-field when a globe of phosphorus-oxide is buckled over the maw are the early discoveries.

Once more, good Doctor? Owing to several as of yet unclassified anomalies-theorized as bleed over from our sub-levels, a large swathe of new alchemicals have recently been exploited and used to steadily increase the growth rate of numerous new samples our Nholm discovered during this season's past expansions. To wit, we present a sampling of all three discoveries. Do keep the box-our cryptologists tell us the wood never dies despite being cut from the tree.

Secondary to this and hopefully read with less formality: have you considered adding your criminal enterprises to our ecosystems? While your knowledges of herbalism and physiologies unknown to us fully eclipses our understandings, the S'Letaunntic Vault is well and truly prepared to offer that which those that exist outside the law crave the most (or would to our minds, we’ve only Kvoss for a social sciences model of the non laws-abiding citizen thus far): legitimacy. This offer would include complete integration of your Colourful Anatomists into the newly burgeoning cornucopia that is floor 3, while also shielding the bulk of your actions under the treatise and series of ratifications that is our charter of said proffered legitimacy within Sethennai proper. In that sense its rather like the jumbling of your far and away superior chymistries with one's physiology, in terms of consistency if not substance. The charter, that is. We hope you'll not begrudge us the presumption of such an offer. Please do let us know if there is some sort of alternative that would see you into our ecosystems. We cannot wait to explore the unique physiologies of those that live within the Vault alongside you.

A small rat made of folded paper is left in the Nameless Palaces. Its tailed is tied to the antennae of a similarly made cockroach-though the paper is a different kind of make. The rat's whiskers are tied to the tale of a scale replica lizard. Again a different make of paper. The strange procession of folds spirals inward, the cryptids defying more and more classifications the farther one follows. The S'Letaunntic Glyph-unknown for what it stands for-is written on the lizard's back, as its the one that begins the entire message. Read upside down the At first the font is stilted. Jumbled. Like whoever wrote had a bad palsy or their hand was assailed by tremors

Victor. Old friend. Forgive for not reaching out sooner. Hard person to see, you. Hah. It's taken my fle.sh Wont belabour. Youd know morethan More.than I on subject. Breaking down in here. Broken. Down. Scattered papers. Shredde-

The font abruptly changes, becoming much more smooth and refined in how its inscribed. The folded creature this resumes on is an upright paper doll: six limbed with a gapping, cyclopean eye lodged over a rictus mouth. Red paper suppurates from the eye, crimson and viscous despite how thick the paper's revealed as to tactile sensations. The paper doll has hands for feet, and is spindly thin despite occupying all three dimensions of space. Whatever intelligences are at the heart of the Tangle easily recognize it as an aberrant from UnderSCAR. The language resumes, but in Sethennai.

    Victor. Kriesling. Et al.

The rest of the creatures post the Aberrant are absent glyphs. Instead a series of red fingerprints form a distorted portrait of Professor Kreisling on the last most paper figurine: a shell-backed hominid with a knuckle dragging front pair of limbs and a slug like hind appendage. The picture shifts as its moved, the Professor becoming at first pensive & surly, then become jubilant with laughter. From left to right. A series of glyphs tack in the same over the tableau, all scrimshawed in only red thumbprints:

    Laugh. Sethennai laugh with you.
    Weep. Weep alone.

I’m glad you’re trying to wake the city up from its nightmare. It thinks it can be all of itself, and it’ll ruin everything trying, until there’s only one dream above the water and it has nothing to do but stop being itself one way or another after all.

The reply is something of a contradiction – a sealed scroll anointed with holy oil (Illyrin theology accords dragons a rank somewhere between living saint and lesser god, and their words a technically a sort of holy writ), delivered across Sootcliffe and the harbour to Blades HQ by an abominably loud automatic gyrocopter of some variety, spewing choking smoke into the sky as it flies. It’s not in any state to make the return trip. The reply was clearly dictated, written down and interpreted by one of the attendants she brought with her from the Old World.

    Miss Shackle, Esquire

It was a pleasure to receive your correspondence. You have my sincere admiration, both of your skill in the Arts and for the sublime work you have done restoring order to the Stacks.

I arrived in Sethennai at Prince Cael’s invitation and to seek his patronage in my industrial enterprise, which he graciously granted, and he has provided all the support I could ask for in the years since. I, in turn, have been happy to contribute generously to the city’s treasury. It has been a perfectly satisfactory relationship, at least until this present unpleasantness.

Currently, I can only hope the tide of anarchy threatening the city recedes quickly. Until the Prince recuperates or some other faction restores order, I can only do my duty as a responsible member of society, and keep the peace where my reach extends. Over the past weeks I have been meeting with other respectable citizens who have been driven from their homes and businesses by the mob, but it will be some time before I can offer them a solution.

Any aid or advice would of course be appreciated.

The procedure – well, from the secretary’s perspective, it involves politely declining several offers of a less conventional appearance and then accepting a sweet-smelling drink, followed by waking up dehydrated, exhausted, and ravenously hungry. It does, however, render the illusion entirely superfluous, now matching the body beneath it perfectly.

But once that’s dealt with, there’s a formula I’ve been tinkering with in my spare time, something to try and limit how often things go crazy in our little corner of the city. Take a look, if you like? Would give my friends a lot more breathing room if we could limit the number of fires need putting out. Dear Friend A'Jish,

In my homeland, we have a saying. 'Un prince sage évites la barrate. Un plus sage apprends à danser la dedans.' It does not translate directly into the common tongue, but it is widely known in my court that the phrase was originally attributed to Frederick von Drakdram, my great-great grandfather, when he ended the Scholar's Schism in the Wyrmpale in 414 IR. When the liberal collegiate and magical bourgeoisie rose up against the Dragonseat, Frederick decided not to fuel the fires by responding in a heavy handed manner. Instead of deploying the various knightly orders at his disposal, he dispatched the Order of Moonless Nights - our intelligence bureau, now in my nefarious cousin's hands - to plant agents within the movement and turn it upon itself from within. The process took over a year and cost the throne a veritable fortune, but in the end Frederick was successful at his goal; the Scholars disbanded as their leaders were bought off or assassinated one by one.

I never met my great-great grandfather, but if that story is true then he was a short-sighted, reactionary fool. Instead of recognizing intelligence and talent in his own subjects, he saw them as a threat and allowed that fear to compel him to squander resources to smother them. He could have met with the leaders of the Scholars honestly, listened to what they had to say and allowed them freer reign, even used their guidance by taking them on as advisors. Critical free thought is not a danger, but an asset. I often wonder how many more learned minds, how many friends might Valmont have been blessed with had Frederick seen the opportunity in front of him rather than quake at the shadow of rebellion.

When faced with chaos we must learn to adapt, to forget everything we think we know and press on into the unknown with utter tenacity. That is the lesson I have taken away from the failings of my bloodline, A'Jish. If we are true to ourselves and follow our hearts, we can never be defeated. Though I too fret for the sake of Sethennai and my own people, I have faith in myself and my friends that no matter what course we chart, there will always be a dawn at its end.

Now as to your question on divinity: the Cloven Court is not unfamiliar with its workings, though as a rule our magical Order of the Inkwell only studies such matters in the hypothetical. Our magical studies tend more towards more mundane matters and applied practically on the whole; abjurative wards, long range scrying and divination, containment, enchantment of arms and armor, and transformative rituals. I am personally versed in those fields myself, and would be delighted to be consult with you on those matters if you so desire. Is there any particular reason why you ask about lesser gods?

    Warmly,

    Your Friend Isabelle

    Dear Zoe,

Thank you for the well-wishes and the gracious offer. In many ways, the Dreamers are the heart and soul of Sethennai - no matter what the Geist or others might think. You and yours remain a glimmering light among the looming swells of apathy and self-interest. I can only speculate as to what it might signify that you alone of all the powerful in this great city have chosen to volunteer your services against this pernicious threat without being invited, cajoled, or coerced into doing so.

Your aid would be most welcome, of course. Anything you have that might help the Court defend itself will be put to good use, as we believe the abominable menace will strike swiftly and with great force. Unfortunately, Her Serene Highness is already investing all of the Court's resources into expansion and the war effort, and as such we regrettably lack the sum to pay for aid at this juncture. Our astrologers and financiers believe that next month the Court will be in a much stronger position to return any favours owed to your Dreamers, either in charitable donations of ducats or a debt of mystical servitude to be carried out by our ever-expanding Order of the Inkwell.

Should this provision be agreeable to you and your people, please let us know at your earliest convenience.

    Warmly,

    Isabelle

The Court would happily accept any stats to use against the Geist and keep the stat line solvent. If possible, we would accept Mor and/or Esp in any quantity they have (2 of each would actually be super helpful, up to however much they're willing to give). Though the Court cannot repay any loans in Eco this turn, we can repay them at least 2-3 Eco on Turn 3 and maybe toss some Mag in there.

    Spoiler: To the Hierophant
    Show
    Dear Hierophant Y. Cenred,

As ever, you have the perennial thanks of the Court for your stalwart character and approachable mien in the face of imminent danger. Our agents and magical experts believe that it is highly unlikely that the Geist will launch any attacks against you this month - far more likely we will be taking the brunt of the casualties ourselves in the coming conflict. Given what you have already confided regarding your personal efforts, Her Serene Highness is taking the position that it is in your best interest to continue devoting yourself in large part to your existing enterprise.

However, the Court does have a plan to deliver you precisely what you asked for. The Heart of the Tangle will not be an easy prize to claim, yet the Court will endeavour to use every means at its disposal - diplomatic, military, and magical - to retrieve it for you. The delivery will be forthcoming by the end of next month at the earliest, I'm afraid; waging war has its own demands on our resources, as you can surely imagine. It is the most earnest wish of the First Princess that you obtain what you need to complete your works, so as best to join a Court that greatly respects you.

There is one last matter of note that I have been instructed to divulge to your august personage: the Court has been dismayed of late at the lawless character of certain quarters of Palatine. Several of our ambassadors and messengers have been in danger of harassment, and the treatment of the good people of Sethennai at the hands of the squabbling heirs to its noble houses is nothing short of lamentable. Therefore, Her Serene Highness is dispatching a regiment of mages and agents silencieux to secure Valmontese interests in those parts. We hope that this expedition will be met with your approval, if not your outright blessing.

    Sincerely,

The Bureau of Olivia von Draum, Vicomtesse Ardennes, Ministre de Correspondance for the First Princess

    Spoiler: OOC

Keep plugging away on that project, Hierophant! And be patient; the Heart should be delivered shortly.

Oh, and informing them as a matter of courtesy that we're going to be neighbours, since I'm taking [64] this turn.

    Spoiler: To the Chainbreaker Confederacy
    Show
    Dear Captain Ritona Curze,

Fair winds and smooth sailing to you, captain. I will not waste your time by bandying honeyed words, yet protocol dictates at least a moderate level of decorum in our speaking. For the future records of the Court's scribes, is there any particular title, epithet, or great deed by which you prefer to be addressed?

The purpose of this letter is twofold. First and foremost, the Cloven Court extends an invitation to join in the most glorious of campaigns against the rampaging Tangle Geist. It is an entity that spells doom for all that is good and righteous in Sethennai, and its encroach ought to be curbed at the earliest possible opportunity. Yet Her Serene Highness would understand were you to politely decline such an offer; one could make the argument that the fight in Oldport is not yours, perhaps even that you are engaged in more imminently profitable ventures with or against other sects of note in Redgate, Chance and the Ruins. An outright denial would be accepted - even respected - among the Court, for the philosophy of entretenir son propre jardin is wise indeed. All the same, all cooperation against the threat is saluted.

The second reason for my bureau reaching out to you is quite simple: we have not yet spoken, a mistake that the First Princess has sought to rectify this month. The progress of your Confederacy among the poorer districts of Sethennai has not gone unnoticed, a display of an enterprising spirit to match the mores of any military or financial institution yet far more noble in intention. The Cloven Court, despite its origins, believes in civic responsibility and accountability of government to the individual. Her Serene Highness has always had a great respect and admiration for people of all classes; such was the basis for our already reaching out to the Blade of the People with a similar missive. The delay in my writing to you is of my own making; given your own background, I advised my sovereign to wait and see what moves you made before any attempt at rapprochement. If this revelation causes offense, I must candidly apologize - I was only attempting to carry out my duty.

It is the aspiration of First Princess Isabelle that we be cordial, given our common friends. I hope that you can agree with this sentiment.

    Sincerely,

The Bureau of Olivia von Draum, Vicomtesse Ardennes, Ministre de Correspondance for the First Princess

Since my Mor is 9 and the Geist likely can't read my mail this turn, if you are interested in sending stats just include the phrase 'high tide'.

Also full disclosure: I'm planning on reaching out to the Blade for an alliance in the near future and I can only assume you're doing the same, so it behoves us both to be at least on good terms.

    Dear Floor 0 Representatives,

Our most humble apologies for addressing the incorrect agent. It is the furthest realm from my sovereign's intent to cause even the meanest shadow of slight upon SCAR, for she respects all of the precedent institutions of Sethennai. The Valmontese are well aware that we are still guests in this most illustrious and storied city, and none more so than Her Serene Highness. In the future, I will personally ensure that all communications are relayed through your office to avoid any further unfortunate misunderstandings.

We look forward to hearing the verdict of your blessed patron, though First Princess Isabelle understands the desire for patience as well as any other. Without it, surely the Cloven Court would have collapsed long ago.

They seem quite amiable I'd say, it looks like all that's wrong in the city is condensed south... As to the Transfer, we'd start gathering properties, though please do make a letter in case it is needed and since the captain and her elite clearly prefer you, we were wondering if more of her... less reliable troops could go to us.

    Spoiler: OOC
    Show
Alright, so on the one side, only persons who could really screw this over are either too preoccupied/already know it so what does it matter... Or at least that's what I say, but people are devious and I'll rather let it be a secret and trust you.

Now, in exchange for this trust and since we don't know how much we are getting (or how high level the captain is and you are getting her), I'll like it to be a little more weighed in my favour, not so much since I am getting the land but say, just plain 2 if it was 2 (since those would be clearly just the two you'd get for taking the land), 2/3 if it was 3 and so on, so it'll be something like 60% rounded up.

The reply comes with several exquisitely crafted figurines of the Thaund's renowned stone, they are tiny, but absorb magic with ease and thanks to intentional design choices create a plethora of specific magic reactions (mostly illusions) when filled to capacity. The message is delivered by letter of course, with the envoy wearing one of the previously gifted torcs.

    Leadership of the Vault,
law-abiding and dutiful, truly Sart looks out for you.

We are honoured to be consulted in such an important choice, and as far as we are concerned this time calls for precisely that business acumen, what is offered besides the beholding of duty? Sart compels us to fight magic unleashed, but when the warriors leave, the citizenry pays in coin or far worse. The knights shall not reprimend you for being the shield and not the sword, perhaps even allow us sword wielders to ease the worries of your people while their soldiers are in good hands.

As for the show of trust and the sharing of intel, while very much appreciated, the order is terribly sorry for any problems in accruing them as our own reply may have been unclear, we did already acquired a source for such info (which we thought you knew about), but in return for your trust and as a proof we'll let you know of the highest of chatter Sethennai offers, which coincidentally is why we can't afford any more deals right now:

The Painters Guild have sold vast amounts of property – the vast majority of their revenue generating operations – to the Ironfang Company or individual officers serving in it on terms so generous they might as well be gifts. Captain Azaersi has been thoroughly bought off, and unless someone makes a better offer or something happens to her within the next month, she’ll likely sign off on folding into the Guild within the next month.

-Lieutenant Albrich, manager for local relations.

    Spoiler: OOC

Right back at you, actually, if you are not using your Mil for anything I'll happily buy some (just using them for neutral territory expansion), Which stats would get me a 1:1 deal for it? I can probably do eco depending on a response from St Just, but most of it is going to dealing with that little situation from the rumour mil.

We are the ones who put the money up front, who spent the resources getting in the good graces of them and the ones who publicly declared our alliance to them. It will be split as fairly with in the terms of the deal. Also are you interested in an alliance? Not only would it save you when you transfers the resources but it would also be good to have a unified front to start making the city cohesive again.

    Spoiler: OOC
    Show
I have invested more than you have by being the one to actually take the risks, if you want just a 1/4th share with 1 economy you still get the land and 1/4th of the stats with any unequal stats going to us. If you invade a neutral territory you use 6 temp magic the equivalent to 1 permanent economy. You take no risk that way.

Or you can take the risk with out current deal and pay half. If it is an odd amount of resources we can figure out some sort of split I am sure, most likely with share buying out on the stat (So like if there is a warrior left over after the split can pay 3 econ for it).

Also asking if you want an alliance? Makes sure you are protected from the North and have relatively stable allies who are unlikely to force you to defend them because few factions can reach them with you in the crossroads.

    Spoiler: Shackle

Most likely yes. I am not sure how much trouble the Knights will have with the southern parts but we see no reason why the North and East can't remain stable with nice boundaries. With luck the other portions will stabilize eventually but until then this is the perfect opportunity for all of us to grow strong while others fight. Keep us in mind if you do end up doing something interesting magically. We already have ideas in the works for the Painting World but we are always on the look out for more things.

Dear Olivia von Draum, Vicomtesse Ardennes,

We have grown a bit in that regard and hopefully will eclipse all others soon.

As for the Palantine, we are all for it. The Knights and the Vault have both offered us first chance at it but honestly we weren't too interested. We are less heads of state and more supporters than anything.

    Sincerely,

    The Painting's Scribe Washington Albers

Us getting the lands sounds good. We may have to buy the last part of Foundrytown off of you in the future but we should see what is going in Sootcliff first. We would prefer you take the head for negotiations if only because you want the Dragon to eventually go to you but we would like to hear what is said.

We would be interested in the rumors but sadly our economy is in a bit of a state at the moment. If the offer is open we may be more able to do it in the future. If you hear about someone plotting against the Ironfang's though we are willing to pay.

As for our move, it will hopefully be fine. Though if you can find who keeps blowing up the gun workshops nearby or the roving thieves that would be helpful.

We hold no interest in 49 as we are withdrawing from the Crossroads but are quite happy with the deal offered. Don't forget you can spend rep to buff your reputation with the Bazar if they aren't forthcoming on what exactly they need though can't imagine it being too much of a problem.

Offering the opportunity to check out an adventure if you are hurting on those. Would be up to you to clean up any problems you release though.

There is a wide smile at the mention of making sure to try everything out. I will definitely. Can't wait to try it out. Was there any problems with my tattoos? Particularly, the inactive ones? Going to have to do a rework on them anyways but still good to know if any were problematic.

Overall he seems excited on the idea but felt unclear on the cost. It is hard to justify spending a fortune on a single person when the faction could train them up by itself.

    Spoiler: OOC

Basically asking the cost but warning not to get hopes up.

Also the reference to inactive tattoos is a reference to tattoos more useful for combat similar to a wizard's spell book only always prepared and much more specialized in certain fields.

    Spoiler: Ironfang Mercenary Company
    Show

The job is mostly simply guarding me and the Knight's Null and to act as dissuasion. Maybe a bit of marching to make sure any neutral territory in the Foundry goes to us.

As for who we want to be leader, we are thinking Isabelle VII of the House of von Drakdram, First Princess of Valmont. Not only is her reputation stellar but she has multiple claims on various other countries and a background in politics. Undoubtedly, if she gets the city she will rise quickly. A good background in art investment and more importantly, it will give use more room to experiment. Not to go entirely Lich but there is some paintings we legally could never make because our designation as a luxury producing guild and resources we don't that we should. That of course assumes she isn't assassinated. If she is, we will have to look over some of the other claimants. That being said, she hasn't declared us allies so mostly security it is until then.

If someone does somehow pull a boat of rubies out of their ass, make sure to tell us. We are quite willing to make sure our rubies are bigger.

I am slightly wary of ceding the central district to a militant order of mage hunters, especially given my nature, but I'm not willing to force a conflict to prevent it.

Oh, your endeavor last month. I assume it is still in progress? If not, I may have some questions for you that I'd be willing to pay something for the answer to.

    Spoiler: Sleepless Crusade (9)

A fair question. I will preface this by saying I assume that both the Blade and the Geist can read my letters, and I also assume the former would tell the Chainbreakers of their contents, if the pirates don't already have their own methods of acquiring them. Or the Geist would, just to sow chaos. So I am operating under the assumption that this information will be known to all relevant parties. I, ah, also cannot read any of their messages, so I don't have any way of verifying this.

Full disclosure from my side. My goal is to remove Cael's regime and replace it with something competent. This likely means the First Bank would consider me an enemy, and probably the Hierophant would as well, once this is known. The Ironfang are mercenaries, and Cael has not paid them for months, so they're not a concern. Which just leaves the First Warden, in terms of the authorities of the government. Last month, I started looking into his history, specifically around his bindings. I am going to break him free of everything I can this month. Assuming no one interferes, at least. Which would place the Wardens on my side, in whatever conflicts are to come.

Now, I am also rather certain that the Chainbreakers and the Blade are planning a jailbreak this month. That was at least their plan as of last month, so the Geist's actions may have changed that, but I doubt it. The Chainbreakers don't seem concerned about the godling, at least. I have not informed the First Warden of this yet, as that would likely be construed as a hostile act against the Blade, and I'd rather not be the one to start something.

Anyways. I am going to ally with the Bookhounds and take the Stacks this month. Vrocdruk will also be unchained, though I have no idea what that will mean for his personality. Given I'm likely to already come into conflict with the Chainbreakers over the Prison, I don't think that's a concern of mine. But you may not want to give the Confederacy another reason to act against you.

So. That's everything on the table. Where does all of that leave you?

Ah. And, regardless, [3 Mag+1 trade cost] for [3 Mil+1 trade cost] is acceptable to me, whether that's a one-off deal or the start of an alliance.

    "The Knights Null"

It was a beautiful morning, no birds were singing, as paranoia had set in for many, but they were replace with the toiling bells of the awakening Chapter House.

Tareis was already awake though, for one thing, it was to be an interesting day, and great men got up before the sun in such times (or so his brother used to say), for the other his new pups Ari and Artois were awful noisy and seemingly nocturnal, as they nibbled at his boots and ran around with far less energy now that the sun was arriving.

Letters were signed and papers were stamped almost absentmindedly, as his real thoughts went to the great plans of the knights, his siblings who were supposed to be in that chair, his own designs and finally... weakness.

Fisically he was more than able, and his station was high but there was a reason he had to make the trip secretly, several actually, his station was high but Maximillian's ghost haunted him in the treaties and promises, and with that little bastard most of all...

But fisically he was able, and thats how he would make a change. A few helpers were called in to help him don a medium armor of doxeburg design (as signaled by the black iron and spikes), uncommon on him but favoured by several knights of those lands and he donned a heavy cloak, leaving the chapter house dicreetly after giving the hyenas a treat.

He walked almost naked (or at least thats how he felt unarmed) to the makeshift barges of the dreamers, where a few loyal knights handed him a masterwork blunderbuss and the huge maul that was his trademark, and with a few coins to a conscious boatman they were across the river.

blunderbuss and the huge maul that was his trademark, then with a few coins to a conscious boatman they were across the river...

... and to the shockingly efficient urban design of Nazhar, the knights went about half as efficiently through (which is still a brisk pace), attempting their best to not disturb the working teams.

Maintaining their goal of discretion they gave a wide sweep through some of the many slums of redgate [28, 29, 32] before entering the lands claimed by the chainbreakers, armed and armored enough to deter any but the most suicidal thiefs, the group made their way to almost the entrance of Ranshackle as He was both a) sure Curze already knew a band of knights were on their way and b) not stupid enough to put himself within range of a cannonade with what he was about to do.

Now caution was thrown to the wind and the heavy coat to one of his attendant, with a passion the young Chapter Master screamed at the four winds " Ritona curze! I have fought the corsairs of Alear, the privateers of many nations and my own rogue comrades. The sea calls to many honourable men and even though your band are mostly thugs of the worst kind even they do not deserve you! a huge overhead swing of the maul makes the ground tremble to hammer the point home*

"Show your mettle, pick a time, pick a place and prove me right by failing to defeat me. Or prove me right this very moment by refusing, either way, let your <<comrades>> see what being of what you are made of really means!

    We strongly appreciate your candor.

As our own security is somewhat compromised, we cannot in good conscience comment on much of what you shared, as it concerns your ambitions and was disclosed in confidence. Suffice it to say that we are satisfied with the terms of the trade deal; in the short term, given our position, that amount is all we can formally commit to.

We intend to find a more reasonable compromise with the Chainbreakers; if not, we appreciate having your support in the conflict to come. We hope that in the long term, once our position is secured, we can offer you support in turn.

However, we are willing to provide you with [1 permanent magic] next season, or any temporary resources we receive from adventuring this season (if we receive enough to serve as legitimate reparations). Alternatively, we are willing to offer you a favour, to be redeemed at a moment of your choosing, and Nazhar's word is as iron. The Chainbreaker Confederacy

Pirates and worse dogged the Knightly steps as they trudged through Redgate to the raucous clatter and song of Ramshackle, most more out of curiosity than contempt, though the vague similarities in armament to the Warden’s soldiers drew more than a few dark glares. By the time they reached the dock where the Incendiary Whim rode at anchor, a small crowd had gathered in hopes of blood or gossip.

A small bully crew of Sailors and Longshoremen came up from the dock to meet the Knights of Null, though Ritona Curze was not initially among them, instead she exited a taphouse and crashed into the crowd with loud voice and limited dignity, only joining her Dock Crew after a moments jostling through the mob. She was armed (most of the crowd were, wandering unarmed in Ramshackle was never wise) but unarmoured, the armoured coat and steel bracers in which she had fought the Succubus Queen of Akimbo the previous month not appropriate attire for carousing.

Aha! Well the Knights of Null have caught me with me belly full a’ rum and half dressed! I hope ye can forgive me ankles showin’!” Ritona’s voice was deep and brassy, Captains lungs practiced at shouting over whipping wind, with her sailors cant confusing any proof of drunkenness.

A duel ye say? I see me hunt price is sufficient to attract some attention at least! The Warden will be thrilled! Ye’ can probably strip yer boots off in the prison office fer a Godling foot licking on this banter alone!” The gathered crew chuckled darkly, though any cruelty in the statement was directed far more at the Warden than the assembled knights.

But what do I stand t’gain off of such a duel big man? I’ve far more interesting and glorious suicides to strive for than gambling a bit of pride or honour fer a duel with a Business Ogre. Why just two months back I heard a Sea Dragon stalked the Straights of Baem, surely a far more heroic ballad of Treasure Lust and Overwhelming Odds than a bad parry to a modest warrior such as yourself? After all, if ye’ve hunted corsairs ye should know that time at sea is patience and risk management. The salt dries our honour and the wind scours our pride.” An offered duel of a different sort is in the air, a Buccaneer’s Boast too choose the fate of words exchanged today.

    Dear Zoe,

There is no word that exists to describe your generosity. The Geist will not be merciful, we fear - the more aid we have against the threat, the better. I understand the need for repayment, and have already spoken to my financial advisors about setting up a fund next month to send to your Dreamers in the form of both alms and charms. The righteous standing together against the dark is all that is required to withstand the worst of its ravages.

Sadly, I must be brief and sign off here. There is much to do, and time ever quickens near a reckoning.

    Warmly,

    Isabelle

That is a deal I will accept! Those stats will be locked in for my EoT, then.

    Spoiler: To the Chainbreaker Confederacy
    Show
    Dear Captain Ritona Curze,

Your response to our overture of a joint war is both expected and accepted by Her Serene Highness. Few in the Court truly considered that you would bare blade or loose shot on the account of another without financial incentive, and those voices are silent now. While I did not count myself among them, I can sympathize with their disappointment without personally sharing in the sentiment. The Court will not count on the aid of the Chainbreakers.

However, it is my hope and that of my sovereign that future conversations between our powers may be slightly more cordial, if not always in perfect accord. The Cloven Court respects and welcomes all voices, whether they belong to sister harpies of a mercantile bent or a legendary captain of the waves. Unlike others in this august polis, the First Princess and those that follow her banner do not discriminate against someone by virtue of such fallible metrics as public opinion. Even if we did engage in preferential practices, the Hemminghock Family Company is hardly more admired than your own crews currently ashore. Joining in a war against monsters is not done solely for political gain; it is the moral right and responsibility of good citizens. Had you or yours been similarly assailed without provocation, rest assured that the Cloven Court would have spoken in your defense and brought similar resources to bear.

The Court certainly has no grievance against the Chainbreakers, and we aim for that state of affairs to continue. I pray that the reverse is true for you, Captain.

    Sincerely,

The Bureau of Olivia von Draum, Vicomtesse Ardennes, Ministre de Correspondance for the First Princess

    Spoiler: To the Painters Guild
    Show
    Dear Painter's Scribe Washington Albers,

We are overjoyed to hear of your gracious acceding of our designs for Palatine. I have sent word ahead to several of the prime movers that operate in that region - most notably the Hierophant Yri Cenred - who seems to accept the First Princess as a wise interim head of state until affairs can be stabilized. Should my sovereign sit the city's throne in Cael's stead, we will ensure that all voices are heard. It is unfortunate that Valmont needs to get involved, as we seek not dominion over Sethennai but rather a return to good order and peace, the better for everyone to pursue their own affairs without getting 'entangled' in wars.

(I hope that you will forgive the lapse into humour, but even humble letter-writers must occasionally enjoy themselves, as I am sure you agree.)

The Painting's pledge brought heart to the Court these past few days. Though your Guild is not the only one to promise aid of the kind you have done, every sword bared against the madness in Oldport cements our cause and shores up the spirits of all those who serve Her Most Serene Highness in the arts of war. Once the chaos has been stamped out for good, I have been asked by the First Princess to speak to those who have proven their valour about the prospect of a formal alliance. There are many in Sethennai who walk with grace, yet the Heir to the Dragonseat must be discerning in whose ambassadors she chooses to accept into her Court on a long-term basis.

    Sincerely,

The Bureau of Olivia Von Draum, Vicomtesse Ardennes, Ministre de Correspondance for the First Princess

So I can start formulating my EoT, roughly how much Mil are you planning on sending? Please indicate the number (after trade penalties) by using the word in the first few paragraph of your reply, e.g. 'three nights from now'. I'll be reaching out to folks as we close in on EoT and provide a summary of what everyone is pledging, so you each get a breakdown of exactly how I plan on using the stats.

As far as alliances go, I'm thinking of reaching out to form some on Turn 3 ideally with you and a few others, but it will of course depend on how this turn goes.

In return for ignoring the Chainbreaker's claim on the district of Redgate, thinking them a disreputable rabble not worth entertaining, the MFRARIS:AUTATGCIPAATPOWIIC is admitting fault in the ensuing chaos. As such, the MFRARIS:AUTATGCIPAATPOWIIC is publicly committing a single favour, to be negotiated at a later date, to the Chainbreaker Confederacy.

The Company’s officially sponsored adventurers are more suited to dungeon delving than urban investigation, and at one point come quite close to inciting a riot. Some ‘polite conversations’ with a few of the more obvious demagogues later they, while not much closer to determining the ultimate supplier of the problem, do track down a certain weed planted under a leanto which has never seen the sun, which leaves anyone who smokes it possessed of a supernatural charisma for some hours (though, oddly, it only seems effective within the neighbourhood). [Gain ++ Mag]

The Family has a surprising number of things in common with the bank, really –being rich, for one. Being menaced by the horrible monster eating the city, for another. The Geist being between them does make calling one another require some awkward detours, but several low level meetings between clerks and auditors do leave the bankers happy to call the Henninghock Sisters a valuable part of the city. [Relations improved to 3]

The Ghostcaptors have much more success on their second outing! Following up on rumours of a terrible ghost who drove a man from his home while trapping his daughter within, they eventually manage to puzzle out that the daughter – rather unhappy with the speed her father had gotten over her mothers death – was the one that had given the spirit permission to enter the house. After a confusing series of events including a fake wedding, a momentary resurrection, and a parental reconciliation, the ghost is banished and peace is restored. For their trouble, Egon and company are left with several magically charged pieces of matrimonial ephemera [+++ MAG] and pages of what seems to be an authoritative guide to the city’s unquiet dead and their bans and banes [+++ ADV]

(I mean hey, I’m not out of old horror-comedies to reference yet)

Careful effort is taken to make sure that the alms given to the Dreamers are delivered by only the most personable and least violently doctrinaire squires and initiates available, and that they know to talk up the good the Knights are doing at every opportunity. The followup expedition to UnderSCAR went..well, no ones sure. The survey teams vanished for several weeks, and then came back up annoyed that their supplies of food and lamp oil were missing, certain that they’d not gone more than a day’s journey down and hadn’t been gone for more than 24 hours. Then, later that day, they came up again – haggard and harried, certain that they’d been trapped on floor -8 for months or years, missing half their number but full of knowledge and tricks. SCAR’s leading metaphysicians have no idea what happened, or which one of them is real, but they’re pretty sure whichever one is fake will probably fade from existence in a month or so. [Gain ++++ ADV]. The older team also reported that they were only able to find their way back when the mysterious citizen Kvoss appeared out of nowhere to save them from some rabid hyena-moles. [Bonus XP for Kvoss].

Unfortunately, whatever phenomenon caused this seems to be getting more severe, with an attempt at a followup leading to the unfortunate team lead breaking apart into several dozen possible iterations of themselves as soon as they entered the undervault. Which, as they all occupied the same space, ended rather messily. Best estimates are to allow UnderSCAR two months to restabilize before following up. [Site locked for 2 turns]

As part of the official SCAR initiative to promote peaceful cultural exchange and interaction with the wider city, Vaulters become regular guests at the various casinos, apothecaries, and other businesses offered by the Doctors, and gain a reputation for paying in full and not cheating. More intelligent undead are able to identify several ancient pieces of art and ceremonial relics that the Expedition is happy to pay significant amounts for [++++++ Econ], as well as a mosaic that proves tantalizing suggestions of an underlying pattern to the ancient tunnels under the city [+ Adv]. They also discover several funerary rituals used to summon or bolster ancestor spirits which, slightly tweaked, should strengthen Nazhar’s physical form [Bonus XP for Nazhar]. The last weeks have seen Potterwalk turn into something of a warzone as the vigilante – called Archangel by the locals – and his pursuers carry on a lethal game of cat and mouse. After several bloody noses from ambushes and trapped ‘hideouts’, one of the cannier pirates manages to turn one of his accomplices, luring him into an ambush of their while others raid his lair and kill the others, seizing several detailed maps of Redgate’s tunnels and secrets [++ Adv] and, far more importantly, the trophies taken from each of his kills, for which bidding had already begun and (given the impressively creative methods used in a couple cases) did an excellent job of putting quite a lot of the Chainbreaker’s wealth back into Ritona’s hands [++++++ Econ]

Archangel himself escaped the ambush, if barely. He’s gone to ground and, while they know the general location, he’s turned his final bolthole into enough of a deathtrap to leave the now much richer hunters unenthusiastic about pursuing. Dear Executive Director Ticaret,

At the behest of Her Serene Highness, I offer the best of tidings to your fair counting house, sir. It may renew your faith to hear of our good fortune, which the Court plans to muster on your behalf. Our efforts to bolster aid among the more civic minded of Sethennai's populace have not gone unrewarded; we are preparing to make our strike at the Geist with friends. Furthermore, the First Princess has secured the forces of the Knights Null to keep safe your halls from rot and predation.

At this juncture, I have been asked to broach the subject of debts paid and owing. It is the understanding of the First Princess that the protection paid on our behalf by the Knights satisfies the conditions of the loan that the Cloven Court took out last month. We have informed them that some financial payment might be owing, but would be happy to take on that fiscal responsibility ourselves so as to clear our existing balance from your books. Our emissaries are currently reaching out to them to confirm the exact number of companies you should expect at fortnight's end.

Once the Geist is beaten back, the First Princess may desire to converse more candidly about the subject of formal patronage and protection. In the candid spirit of friendship, I will divulge that you may be invited for a second time to join the Cloven Court in full.

In keeping with our own internal codes and diplomatic transparency, it is my role to inform you of developments in our dealings as they unfold. While the terms of our agreement from earlier this month remain the same - in exchange for sending your armies to protect the Bank, the Cloven Court will forfeit the Hemminghock prize and send it to you - the Painters Guild have also committed some of their own forces to aid in our war against the Geist. We will likely split the prize between the two of you, but as you currently count each other as allies, the Court does not anticipate sharing the glories to be all that troublesome for your order.

Once the Court has confirmation of the final numbers your knights intend to field, we can rendezvous with the Bank officials and put the deal to paper as we close in on the end of this month.

    Sincerely,

The Bureau of Olivia von Draum, Vicomtesse Ardennes, Ministre de Correspondance for the First Princess

Thank you for the support! Since the Geist can't read my mail, if you wouldn't mind confirming the amount of Mil you plan on sending to the Bank this EoT? Just put the number somewhere in the first paragraph of your response (I.e. 'a 4th time', since the Geist can read your replies and you might want to keep your exact numbers close to the chest.

Also it's worth noting that the Painters Guild is committing 5 Mil to help me hit the Geist directly. Since the two of you are allies, I figured it would be fine for me to forgo the prize and split the VP between you when the Geist is dead (since you average VP as allies anyway, I don't see that being too much of a problem).

    Dear Cecelia Hemminghock,

After an initial analysis, our diviners and sources on the streets have determined that it is exceptionally unlikely that our common foe can intercept our communiques to you. Our couriers are magically warded and we employ several different network of loyalists who are foreign to the city, and therefore, outside the Geist’s covert field of vision. Regrettably, the same degree of insulated secrecy cannot be said to exist for your agents. Therefore, what I share on behalf of my monarch and countrymen should be replied to in only the most circumspect of verbiage.

The Cloven Court has amassed a modicum of support to engage the Tangle Geist this month. The Painters Guild have promised us soldiers, and the Knights Null are moving to protect the First Bank at our behest. However, to strike a truly crippling blow with no losses, we may require numbers bolstered beyond even those most ratified of heights. To these two allies, the Court has promised your bounty in full once the Geist has perished, yet might we count on your own forces - sadly diminished as they may be - in light of this fight for our shared survival?

Enclosed in this message are instructions to return your sentiment to us in an otherwise innocuous reply. The appearance of a polite refusal of a trade offer or war demand would surely be expected by the Geist; a tone of respectful regret has been successful in such overtures thus far. The Heart of the Tangle does not believe anyone can stand against it - shall we prove them wrong?

    Sincerely,

The Bureau of Olivia von Draum, Vicomtesse Ardennes, Ministre de Correspondance for the First Princess

Committing to you here because if our respective estimations are correct, the Geist cannot read my mail. Can I count on any Mil, Mag, or Adv from you this month to hit the Geist with? If yes, respond with the word 'dividend' and the number you are sending (after trade reductions) in separate sentences in the first paragraph. If you don't, then I will assume you aren’t sending anything.

For reference, the Painters have promised 5 Mil after trade reductions, and the Knights Null have promised to send a similar amount (waiting on final numbers from them) to keep the Bank safe so that the Geist doesn't just abandon their territories and devour them.

    Dear Floor 0 Representatives,

Patience is perhaps one of the chiefest virtues of a wise sovereign, and it is a trait that First Princess Isabelle possesses in great abundance. As such, she is far too demure to insist directly for an answer to our earlier query regarding military aid against the Tangle Geist. Unfortunately I am not as full of grace as my monarch, and so I find myself pressing you at this hour for either accedence or refusal to the Court's prior request.

Others have chosen to join the charge, and will surely share in not only the glories of victory, but in the natural prosperity that emerges from feeding on a fallen foe. While the Court has forsworn the riches promised by your neighbours in the Hemminghock Family Company, the opportunity remains for the Vaulters to prove their mettle and character in the forge of war.

    Sincerely,

The Bureau of Olivia von Draum, Vicomtesse Ardennes, Ministre de Correspondance for the First Princess

As Midturn has passed, do you have an answer regarding any support against the Tangle Geist? I do plan on hitting them this turn, and any Military or other offensive stats that can be sent would be highly useful.

Can I count on any Mil, Mag, or Adv from you this month to hit the Geist with? If yes, respond with the word 'contaminant' and the number you are sending (after trade reductions) in separate sentences in the first paragraph. If you don't, then I will assume you aren’t sending anything.

I find it rude to laugh at a man with a Maul

after noting the little drop in Ritona's mood, Tareis looked like he was making a genuine attempt to out-smirk Curze, if the smugness didn't fit his face like a glove.

it did drop slightly when she returned to wisecracking, and and there may have been a noticeable gritting of teeth when she discussed how... quaint coming here just to bust up the floor a bit really was.

"Alright, good to see you found your courage, Curze. Do hope it lasts enough..." With that Tareis hefted his maul and left positively beaming, not whitout blinking twice in quick sucession though, happy enough to even humour Ritona's well... humour.

Of course the first stop of his now merry band was to give a roundabout and scout out the place she chose for the fight, Knowing every common alley? don't be silly...

    Time for business

Meanwhile, in the treasurer's room, Aztar signed the last few forms to authorize special credits, common patrols and the sharing of several business with specific painters. It was a formality at this point, several warehouses were already shared, and shipment was being agreed amidst those below him, but once the main branch could be looped The Chapter (and by extension him) would not be found wanting and with nothing but verbal agreements to their name.

A middle age goblin of firm posture and prim clothes arrived bearing some food (to a Calico hyena's great cheer), minutes after he finished the last contract, prompting a look at a pocketwatch and a smile in a routine of a similar making
    "ah, Lucius, Just on time"
"Alas no, I was too late... aughh" which was followed by intensely fake clutching of the stomach.

The pair laughed at their own bit before Lucius somehow found a piece of desk not covered in papers to place the food in. "Anything new?"

"Some mail, if you care to spoil the meal" a raised eyebrow suggested he already knew the answer, and after seeing the waved hand he started reading, a few letters of important enough clients to reach him came and went before a letter detailing Tareis' exploit
"...Oh, meal successfully spoiled I guess"
pressing his temple and seemingly unfazed by Lucius' joking smile Aztar pauses his eating "Is... savageable, it'll just be complicated..."

Lucius furrowed his own brow as Aztar ignored the food, put on glasses and searched for specific papers amidst the mess, seemingly finding them all exactly where he expected them to be.

*Cough* Aztar looked back from his papers for a moment, prompting a ringing bell from Lucius, followed by a similarly well-dressed goblin (though seemingly far less comfortable in those clothes than Lucius) entering the room with several scrolls and papers. "I saved the best for last... You won't believe what darling Dalia is up to..."

Aztar's eye went wide, as his mood recovered and a fond smile with a tinge of nostalgia grabbed a hold of his face "Hah! little Cat's eyes? Why she was hardly up to walking!" He took off the glasses and looked at lucius expectant, with impatience quickly slipping in "well, what are you waiting for?"

A knowing look was exchanged, and when Aztar meekly tore another chunk of meat from his plate Lucius smiled, and proceeded to regale him with those most important of letters.

Blessed be her court, it speaks volume of her majesty than no blades are drawn as it regards to that business.

As for the rest... Well, it is unexpected but fair enough as it does not inportune us too much, and it is certainly born out of your current need, Still, we do wish for our most longterm dealings to come to fruition, assuming of course that the wind ends up favouring her as much as do the eyes of the peasantry.

The waters still; all seems to be resolved between us and the Chainbreaker Confederacy. Thank you once more for your support; confirming that we will be trading 3 Mil for 3 Mag this season. Best of luck with your expansion and your plans; if you wish to trade again in the future, simply let us know.

    Greetings.

It seems that delving into your ruin this season was profitable; we estimate that together we were able to clear at least [8 floors]. It seems a shame about the golem; while we do not have the resources to deal with it directly, we are more than happy to provide you with [4 econ, reduced by attrition to 3] in order to offset the resources you must dedicate to eradicating it. Is this acceptable to you?
