    Default Exalted: Essence - Dreams of Southern Sands (Looking for Players)

    Night falls on the wealthy oasis town of Sapphire Mirror. Its spot on the road between the Empire of Prasad and the coastal cities of the Dreaming Sea have made it a hub of trade, through which all manner of goods and Jade flow. Its wealth provides relative security, and yet... the residents all lock their doors and huddle together every night. For while the town may be safe from mundane threats, the Fair Folk walk the streets at night, preying on the dreams of the townsfolk. For years, the Raksha have been taking people from Sapphire Mirror, for their own inscrutable ends. Most assume those who were taken are used to satisfy the deadly and monstrous hunger of the Raksha, but any attempt at investigation or vengeance has failed. In addition, residents that leave with no intention of returning suffer terrible fates. They must take their chances with the Fair Folk, or succumb to the ravages of the Raksha's curse. Sapphire Mirror is in need of heroes. In need of the Exalted.

    1. What game system are you running?

    Exalted: Essence, using the manuscript preview given to backers of the Kickstarter

    2. What 'type' or variant of game will it be? What is the setting for the game?

    The game will be set in the South of Creation, in and around a small oasis town somewhere in the general vicinity of the Dreaming Sea.

    3. How many Players are you looking for? Will you be taking alternates, and if so, how many?

    3-4ish.

    4. What's the gaming medium (OOTS, chat, e-mail etc.)?

    OOTS

    5. What is the characters' starting status (i.e. experience level)?

    We'll be Essence 1 starting characters, but from what I understand, characters in ExEss are meant to advance rather quickly.

    6. How much gold or other starting funds will the characters begin with?

    That depends on how many dots of resources they buy.

    7. Are there any particular character classes, professions, orders, etc. that you want... or do not want? What are your rules on 'prestige' and/or homebrewed classes?

    Any of the ten Exalt types are allowed, so long as you have a reason for them to be traveling with the rest of the Circle.

    8. What races, subraces, species, etc. are allowed for your game? Will you allow homebrewed races or species? 'Prestige' races or species?

    If you want to be a Beastfolk or Lintha or anything, feel free. There aren't actually rules in ExEss to differentiate them from humans, it's all about how you describe your character.

    9. By what method should Players generate their attributes/ability scores and Hit Points?

    Standard RAW chargen for a starting character.

    10. Does your game use alignment? What are your restrictions, if so?

    Exalted doesn't use alignment, but please make characters who can work together.

    11. Do you allow multi-classing, or have any particular rules in regards to it?

    N/A

    12. Will you be doing all of the die rolling during the course of the game? Will die rolls be altered, or left to the honor system? If players can make die rolls, which ones do they make, how should they make the rolls, and how should they report them?


    We'll use the dice roller here on the forum.

    13. Are there any homebrewed or optional/variant rules that your Players should know about? If so, list and explain them, or provide relevant links to learn about these new rules.

    Since this is mostly a playtest-ish, I'd like to stick to RAW as close as possible for now.

    14. Is a character background required? If so, how big? Are you looking for anything in particular (i.e. the backgrounds all ending up with the characters in the same city)?

    Yes, please! A few paragraphs should do.

    15. Does your game involve a lot of hack & slash, puzzle solving, roleplaying, or a combination of the above?

    We'll have a mix! Exalted characters have a lot of tools to solve things in different ways, so really, how much combat and such there is will depend on the players.

    16. Are your Players restricted to particular rulebooks and supplements, or will you be allowing access to non-standard material? What sources can Players use for their characters?

    For now, just use the Exalted: Essence core rulebook/manuscript.

    Anyone know what swapping charms for alchies... Does? Or is it just flavor?

    Ms. Noms, would it be reasonable to have high Resources as one of Boris's merits to represent him casually shedding precious metals? I.E. having a tendency to hand out soup bowls made of silver or gold.

    Also Ms. Noms, would a machine spirit bear be available as a familiar? A no is fine too, just curious.

    See the Rite of Reconfiguration:
    The Rite of Reconfiguration
    Alchemicals acquire Charms as normal, but unlike other Exalted, their Charms are arcane technology. The Alchemical cannot use their new Charms — Alchemical or Universal — until they are physically created and installed. Many Alchemicals cultivate relationships with savants in their community who assist them in building Charms to heighten their power. The Exalt is effectively helpless during the Rite, depending on their attendants, allies, and community for protection. Removed Charms sublimate into raw anima that orbits the Alchemical as a ring of arcane symbols, while Charms to be installed disappear from the anima and appear in the hands of your attendants ready to be equipped.
    When you have access to at least two of the following, you can spend a dramatic or recovery scene to retrofit your Alchemical body, equipping augmentations and replacements.
    • Ritual space and magical infrastructure, consecrated to your community
    • Trained attendants, accustomed to the Rite’s prayers
    • A friend, ally, or confidant to whom you have an emotional connection (Intimacy)
    • Sacred reagents, carefully prepared for you specifically
    It is not just flavor, it is the unique advantage Alchemicals have over every other Exalt. it is what makes them flexible heroes of Autochthonia, as say you choose five charms to boost morale while Autochthonia's Populat workers toil endlessly at a factory. This isn't very useful if say, need to go to into a combat situation against corrupted machine spirits with gremlin syndrome. so you do the rite before you head out into the mechanical-wilderness to become a combat-focused being. your modular like that.

    Not Josie, but I do know the book does have examples of magic familiars in chapter 7 so I'd assume a spirit machine bear would be 3 dots secondary.

    Advantages:
    Corona of Fury: While the Infernal is at her Critical health level or at four or more anima, the breath of war (p. XX) restores two motes instead of one, and she recovers one mote between actions during social influence scenes or ventures.

    Unwoven Coadjutor: An Infernal develops a direct spiritual connection with the Demon City itself. This manifests as a reservoir of demonic knowledge and will that only the Infernal can access. Once per session, the Infernal may ask up to her Essence in questions to learn about a specific situation, such as: Can you tell me the nature of this spirit? What strange history happened here? What do you know about this place/object? What unusual weaknesses does it have? What would it take to destroy it? And so on.
    Resonance: Infernals are resonant with orichalcum.

    That Hideous Strength
    Infernals brim with the raw power of the Demon City. A monster worthy of the ranks of hell lurks just beneath her skin. All Infernals can access the Charm Devil-Body Incarnation (p. XX). However, if she does not purchase it as a Charm, she may only activate it once she has reached her last Critical health level. Purchasing the Charm allows her the freedom to transform at any time.

    Font of War (Passive): Without rolling, the Azimuth defeats or kills her Essence in Extras (p. XX) per round, and add the Exalt’s Essence in dice to damage against battle groups. Additionally, each time the Exalt damages a battle group, increase the difficulty to resist a rout check by one, to a maximum of five.
    Terrifying Visage (Active): Add her Essence in automatic successes on social actions to intimidate or terrify a foe.
    Towering Demon Emperor (Iconic): At 10 anima, the Azimuth may transform immediately into Devil-Body Incarnation without paying the cost. Add the Exalt’s Essence in successes to Close Combat or Physique rolls for the rest of the scene, so long as she is in Corona of Fury.

    Personality:
    Isidora outwardly is courageous and brash, throwing herself into the fight then enjoying herself with drink and women after. However when she sees the suffering of the downtrodden and the innocent her rage rises unbidden out of nowhere and she will do what she can to punch whoever causes that suffering in the face whether it be a bandit, tyrant or god. At the same time she sees herself as a failure of a leader and doesn't trust herself to lead anything thinking that she would lead people to die or be deceived by a more experienced politician. This makes avoid being put into positions of leadership and try to make others handle those things.

    Description:
    Her normal appearance is six feet tall, long wild blood red hair with green eyes, fair skin, wearing tiger skin top and bracers, with orichalcum armor woven into the tiger skin and red pants and sandals. Her belt is a green and white rope with the green sun gem set into the mouth of a golden demon face.. Her body is muscular in an amazonian build. She has a iron Tetsubo strapped to her back to fight with.

    Her Devil Body Incarnation is up to twice as big as usual, her skin is brass and she has big demonic horns with green lines all over, her eyes become yellow green fire and she has six brass arms, she walks barefoot, her Azimuth caste mark shines upon her brow, and emerald flames dance around her.

    Backstory:
    Isidora was born the chief's daughter of a nomadic tribe known as The Viridian Scorpion Warriors who lived near the Dreaming Sea. She grew to be the tribe's greatest warrior fighting against animals, other tribes and fair folk with a spiky club and sometimes using only her fists, as well as defeating any of her fellow warriors in duels. Soon became the new chief of the Viridian Scorpion Warriors and her compassion and courage she vowed to keep her tribe safe with her strength. They were for a time, happy with their bountiful lands by the sea.

    But then A Dragon-Blooded diplomat from Prasad came to her tribe speaking honeyed words. They said that they knew of an even better place for them to move to than here and that they were coming to warn the tribe of other Dragon-Blooded coming to get the resources of their land and given the tribes lesser strength it would not be wise to fight Prasad, Isidora not being the most savvy of negotiators agreed so that peace may continue.

    So they moved outwards from the Dreaming Sea, and while they could no longer do trade with people upon the water, the land was still lush and bountiful and they still prospered. For a few years things were fine as they lived in this different land, until the Dragon-Blooded diplomat came to her again saying that it would be wise for her to move further westwards towards these lands where an enemy tribe was, and that there was much glory in fighting and defeating them, while the other Dragon-Blooded were seeking to expand even more. He sweetened them deal by trading them some iron weapons for leathers they gathered. She was a bit more skeptical but in the name of peace, she agreed so that it may continue.

    So in these new lands they came and fought their enemy tribe and won, either killing them off or routing them and living there themselves. Here things weren't as prosperous. The hunting and gathering procured less food, they didn't know the land as well, they didn't have access to their usual trading partners and had to make do with new ones. They continued on in a more modest manner and some were unhappy but nothing too major. A few years more of this until the Dragon-Blooded appeared again saying that she should move even more westward into the desert. At this she was unsure, the desert was outright desolate and hotter than the lands they usually lived in could she be sure this was a good idea? And the Dragon-Blooded assured her by pointing on a map locations for oases that would sustain her tribe quite well, as long as they searched for them, but they had to go or other less-reasonable Dragon-Blooded wouldn't be so generous! Unsure, Isidora agreed to this in the name of peace.

    When her tribe gone into the desert, they could not find any such oases. Isidora granted wasn't the best navigator but they searched as thoroughly as they could and did not find anything that the Dragon-Blooded spoke of. For the next few years, their food and water became lean, her tribe falling on hard times as they desperately hunted and foraged for anything that could sustain in them in these desolate lands. Her tribe, bitter angry and depressed whispered that she was weak behind her back and she began to realize that her Viridian Scorpion Warriors would die out if she didn't do something. So she went forth back to the previous land to seek the Dragon-Blooded diplomat, who sat in luxury as he overlooked oversaw logging and mining camps. The she met with him one last time and demanded that her people get some more prosperous western lands back so they survive, attempting some sort of way of making sure they both can win but the Dragon-Blooded only said in response
    “No, I will not. You barbarians are used to the hard life are you not? Then go back to it, adapt and find somewhere else to live or give up your culture and join us as citizens of Prasad, otherwise my dealings with you are finished.”
    It was at this point that Isidora realized she had been tricked, and he had never been dealing with her honestly. So she went back to the Viridian Scorpion Warriors, rallying them with a fiery speech to go raid and attack the Dragon-Blooded for daring to push them out of their lands. They fought hard against them, but the Prasadi troops with their greater training and the power of an Exalt on their side ensured their defeat, the tribe being killed entirely except for her, whom they took prisoner and intended to use her an example by executing her publicly in some town or city.

    As she was a prisoner she felt helpless, powerless. She had failed her tribe and foolishly been deceived. Isidora felt shame that she did not act sooner. It was there at her lowest point a demonic voice spoke out, offering her the power of the Yozis against those who oppressed her. Isidora accepted its offer, and an emerald inferno exploded around her. She broke free from her bindings, becoming a six-armed brass demon and rampaged through the camp, killing the Prasadi troops in her fury until she found the Dragon-Blooded, brutally fighting him until she managed to cave his skull in with her fist. Her berserker fury lasted into the night and by the time she awoke from slumber she was surrounded by the corpses of her enemies as well as her tribe.

    With her tribe dead as well as the wrong who wronged her, she felt lost for a while. The demon within her guided her to the Demon City, through the five days travel of the Endless Desert to meet with a Second Circle Demon of Malfeas to give her boons of orichalcum armor and a hearthstone, saying that as a new Green Sun Princess she had their backing in her efforts against the gods, encouraging her to go forth and fight whoever to show them the power of Hell hoping that they would get some form of revenge through her. She accepted the boons and went forth back into Creation, killing any beast, bandit or other foe that just so happens to angers her until she comes to a small oasis town in the Dreaming Sea known as Sapphire Mirror.

    I have a concept for a dusk caste.

    The Bloody Handed Arbiter of Unanswered Cruelties

    When asked, the young girl before you speaks of life growing up in the dominion of a rather cruel prince. Born into the servitude of the palace, she never really had a chance to be more than one of the serving girls. Her family cared for her, but the prince was cruel.

    Oh the stories of him made him some hero but he was a demon to the servants of his dominion, and the peasantry were ignorant of his uncaring nature. She thought his cruelty was purely a secret to th outside world. Seems that wasn’t the case.

    The mist surrounded the palace and a being seemingly made of it came through. Unable to identify him, the prince started using his servants as shields while he made his escape. She witnessed her family thrown into the blades of beings that popped from the shadows. These creatures would vanish before the blood hit the floor. She was thrown to the creature like others, not even given time to grieve, but sh had snatched the prince’s weapon from his belt and held it against the creature. It gave it pause and the prince got away.

    “Why do you protect him?” It asked.

    “I care not for him but I care for them and I will not die for him.” she responded.

    The prince had already escaped and the mist creature swooped in and grabbed her.

    She was taken somewhere, a weird portal opening and placing her in front of a throne. There a man? A woman? She couldn’t tell and they weren’t going to say. They were clad in mystic armor, bore a crown. The upper half of their face obsured by a masquerade mask they were clearly powerful, but there was a gentleness to their voice.

    They spoke to her.

    She was asked if she was afraid to die. She said of course.

    She was asked if she given the power to change things would she have let the prince do what he did?

    She said no. She despised him.

    She was asked if she would like the power to do so. On the condition she swear to use it to champion he forgotten dead in their name.

    She was livid, but she nodded.

    Thats when the mist plunged a blade through her back and out her heart.


    That was her last breath, and the end of her mortal life.


    Over the last year, areas in the south east have been noticing their kings, show up dead. All they had in common was being despotic and uncaring. The reports of a small girl with blood stained hands cutting through guards and rulers alike. But on the lips of the dead, and the downtrodden, it was a weird hope

    The Bloody Handed Arbiter of Unanswered Cruelties is a very young girl, possibly barely a teen. She carries herself with a purpose though. She is small, but has clearly trained to be powerful in the last year. Standing no more than 4 and 3/4 feet tall. she dresses as someone in a noble position. In a fight her hands become stained with the blood of her enemies.

    Yeah. I started trying to make Dream-Souled homebrew using Essence and haven't finished it. remember though that for a starting character you only need four charms aside from excellency/ox-body and most of those will probably be universal, so perhaps focus on coming up with maybe one custom charm that makes sense, modes that make sense for a couple others and working on the rest over time?
    I'm also on discord as "raziere". Hate is a chain, free yourself.

    Ur-Locutus was born in Chiarascuro, raised in the city’s ancient archives by his parents-scribe and librarian in the service of Pader Volumen. He learned the sacred art of transcription and lore, of truth and tale. As a teen, he spent the days serving the nobles and scribe and accountant and the nights in the wines telling tales of the the gods, the first age, and the magics of the past.
    A year ago, the slender, balding storyteller awoke from a dream to find himself in the presence of the Father of Tales, the Ink Bled. A portly male with black stained fingers reading in a throne built of old books and scrolls. “Morning Ur, son of Verse and Lyrric. I’ve come to say farewell. You are to be my epilogue, my opening soliloquy. To the south your destiny awaits. There are heroes venturing forth, exalts drawn via prophecy and dream to face the Fae. Join them and tell their tales. Now sleep. I must revise your script.”
    Ur-Locutus woke in the evening, the candles long burned to puddle. A silver quill lay in his left hand and an ink stained map in his lap.
    In the following weeks Ur discovered his new nature, Exigence. His body felt the same but his mind raced, he could read most languages without having studied them, he could see spirits and the dead with little effort and the core principles of sorcery churned in his mind. He meditated on his nature and saw the contrcts of his second birth in the halls of Yu-shan’s celestial library. His god wrote himself into extinction to give Ur a new life.

    Ox Body Prerequisite: None By virtue of her Exalted health, the character endures greater levels of injury. The Exalt gains an additional -1 level. This may be purchased a number of times equal to the character’s Physique. Lunar: The Exalt gains an additional -1 and -2 Health Level. This may be purchased a number of times equal to Fortitude. Liminal: The Exalt gains an additional 0 Health level. This may be purchased a number of times equal to Fortitude. Abyssal, Infernal and Solar Mode: The Exalt gains their choice of an additional 0 or two -1 Health levels. Dragon-Blooded: The Exalt gains an additional -2 Health Level. Getimian and Sidereal: The Exalt replaces the default -1 Health level with a 0 Health level. Alchemical: If Fortitude is higher than Physique, this may be purchased a number of times equal to Fortitude, instead. Strawmaiden Janest: Janest gains Ox Body as a Solar Mode.
    Sorcerous Initiation Prerequisite: Sagacity 1
    The Exalt has internalized the inner workings of Creation’s Essence, giving the power to reshape the world at its fundament. The sorcerer gains the ability to learn and cast First Circle Spells. This Charm can be repurchased at Sagacity 3, Essence 3 to gain access to Second Circle Spells.
    Theanoan Method You apply divine numerology and written sigils towards calculating the strange, unintuitive truths of Creation. The sorcerer gathers strength from arcane mathematics. As long as they’re able to inscribe some element of the spell they’re casting as a reflexive action, they gain one additional Will for every Focus Will action they take to a maximum of three per session.
    Casting a Spell Sorcerers and necromancers shape their Spells through raw force of Will, sharpening their resolve until the world has no choice but to conform to their expectations. This requires a Focus Will action; the character rolls any Attribute + Sagacity at a default difficulty of 3, adding any extra successes to her current Will pool. A character can hold up to 10 Will at a time, but unspent Will is lost at the end of the scene.
    On their turn, a character can use an action to cast a Spell by spending the require Will. This effort drains their Defense by one point for Spells of the first circle, two points for the second circle, and three points for the third. At the start of each of her turns, this penalty lowers by one.

    Death of Obsidian Butterflies
    Sculpting Essence into volant black glass, you unleash a torrent of razor-sharp obsidian butterflies. Spend 5 Will. Make an attack as a medium ranged weapon that affects every ranged band up to long range, so long as it is within the character’s field of perception. This attack reduces Heavy cover to Light and destroys Light cover. The player may optionally treat the character’s remaining Will as though it were Power for the purposes of making a decisive attack. The butterflies remain after the spell is cast, creating difficult terrain.
    Flight of the Brilliant Raptor (Sorcery): The sorcerer conjures an eagle-sized bird of diamond and ruby flame that possesses the Flame tag. The bird explodes when it reaches a target within long range, making an attack against everything in the target’s close range and creating an environmental hazard equivalent to a burning building that persists for three rounds.

    Athletics (Evasion) Flickering Shadow Evasion
    Prerequisites: Athletics 2
    Attacks strike empty space, the Exalt’s dodge so fast as to be nearly imperceptible.
    Spend 2 motes on Step 2. On Step 4, roll your choice of Attribute + Athletics, and add your successes to your Defense against the attack.
    Spirit-Cutting Glance Prerequisite: Sagacity 2
    The Exalt peers into the realm of spirits where invisible beings that dwell, able to strike them with Essence should they come to blows. Commit 1 mote for the scene. the Exalt can see dematerialized spirits that are present in the scene. The Exalt may attack dematerialized spirits as if materialized
    All-Encompassing Sorcerer’s Sight Prerequisite: Spirit-Cutting Glance, Sagacity 4
    The Exalt may gaze into the world’s Essence and unravel the patterns of magic that make up Creation. The secrets of Creation’s mystical workings, spirit magics, and sorcery are unveiled. Commit 1 mote for the scene. The Exalt perceives the presence of Essence, including dematerialized spirits and borders between worlds such as the Wyld or shadowlands as gauzy distortions. Attuned artifacts appear as though lit from within, and hearthstones burn like embers. Whenever a character uses Essence to power Charms or any other effects, these are always visible to the user as though the character had an active anima. They may make Force + Sagacity rolls to try to understand spirit magics, sorcerous workings and other strange phenomena like those produced by demesnes, the Wyld and the Underworld or to identify the use of a Charm. Such effects may have variable difficulty — typically three plus the creator’s Essence or a difficulty modified by the effect’s nature and complexity.


    Merits-
    Primary-artifact 5 Thirsty Quill- starmetal spear. A starmetal quill that grows into spear.
    Spear: A sharpened head at the end of a length of wood, used for fighting at reach. Defensive, Melee, Reaching.
    Artifact: Artifacts are ancient weapons and armor with fantastical effects. Artifact weapons increase Overwhelming by two and either Accuracy or Damage rating (player’s choice) by one.
    +2 acc, +1 damage, +1 defense, 3 overwhelming
    Thread from the Eye Prerequisite: Finesse 2
    When an opponent the wielder has previously targeted with an attack using Thirsty Quill moves away from him, he may spend 1 Power to reflexively move one Range band directly toward them if he has the physical means to do so, even if he has already moved this round. This evocation may be used even if his target has concealed themselves, though it does not grant exact knowledge of their location.
    Resonant: The wielder’s next attack against an enemy targeted with Thread from the Eye ignores half their Defense, if withering, or half their soak, if decisive.

    Secondary- Hearthstone 3- manse (temple Library) Ivy-Hilt Gemstone (Wood, Hearthstone 3) A simply polished black agate with lacy green inclusions.
    Manse Attributes: A smithy of Shogunate design, overgrown such that ironwood covers every possible surface. Clearing the growth is a venture (p.XX) that will only deter its return for a season.
    While set in a weapon: The bearer may reflexively command vines to creep from the stone and further bind her grip to the weapon, increasing successes required to Disarm her (p.XX) by two.

    Soak is 2: 1, + 1 if your Fortitude is higher than 3, then add any Armor Soak Value Hardness is equal to Essence plus two, plus any from armor.
    Any mundane equipment that fits your concept. Any artifacts gained from the Merit.

    Exalt advantages
    Thirsty Quill- Pen, grows into long spear. primary Artifact merit, regardless of any other purchased merits. He cannot lose it, and may recall it to his side from anywhere in Creation by spending 1 mote.
    Archives of Yu-Shan: He possesses a direct spiritual connection with the Library of heaven itself. This manifests as a reservoir of spiritual knowledge that only the Exigent can access. Once per session, he may ask up to his Essence in questions to learn about a specific situation put to ink.


    Anima effects
    Muse (Passive): Serves as muse to any one non-Exalt. Add the Exalt’s Essence in dice to any roll to which the inspiration contributes. This immediately raises any Extras (p. XX) to non-trivial characters.
    Lore (Active): The Exalt and his allies may transform his Essence in dice to automatic successes on Sagacity and embassy rolls.
    Scribe (Iconic): At 10 Anima, add Essence in automatic successes to attacks using spells. These attacks deal aggravated damage. He may also summon chains of living ink life to aid him, reducing the cost of the disarm, ensnare, pilfer, and pull gambits by two, to a minimum of 1. At the end of the session, He gains an Exalt Milestone if his Sagacity or charm influenced a significant character, or if he initiated or assisted the knowledge of a person, spirit, or god.

    Exalted is always of interest. Something in the south.... oh the dreaming sea, that also opens up some potential for naval based shenanigans.
    Dreaming Sea means this has to be 3rd ed.

    It is at this point that I realize that Essence is a new exalted product that I was unaware of, and that this is not in fact a third ed game.
