    Samuel Arvandor

"We'll see, Father," he said, "they don't know you're here. If they wish me to go with them, then I will try do so as an emissary, and return when I can. In the meantime, you could stay with the town and help prepare defenses. It's more important you're here anyway, and when I return, I can report on the lay of the land, as it were."

"I need to bring out the refreshments, lest our 'guests' grow suspicious," Sam said, "wish me luck."

Sam added a pitcher of water as an afterthought, and brought the refreshments outside.

"We may have to go with them," he said to Prudence upon exiting the building, "but I have a plan, sort of. How long does your spell last, and do you have another prepared for today?"

He laid out the platters and glasses on the table.

"These are apples, and this is peach, plum, and grapes," he said, "this is our beer brewed from wheat grown by our town, bread baked as a byproduct of the beer, and this is wine distilled from the grapes. These are juices from apple and plum, respectively. If your men are thirsty for something simpler, this is plain water."

"Commander, we don't know how we came here, but it's entirely possible that this may not be the only 'crossing over', and as such we are prepared to act as emissaries for the Empire of Adelar, in the hopes that the relationship between our lands may be that of trading food and goods across our borders," he said, "err... if you could, Prudence."

Well, if you know little of how you arrived, that is an upset indeed. So let us move on then to things of secondary importance, if this here girl is no creature of hell what reason do you have for her inhuman form, and the unnatural turn of my man who went to ask her questions? I suppose this is what passes for a holy figure in your homeland? The Iman's will want to now of your faith, if you are the only one who speaks our langague it is hard to imagine the word of salvation reaching you, and they will judge who here wishes to embrace the true faith.

The rest I am not the man to ask, you will accompany back to our city, and there the commander will decide what use you may best be put to and how to best deal with your village.

Thank you. she replies simply, with a couple of small nods and a grateful, relieved smile. She may relax somewhat now. Mother and Father might be safe for now and that's all that matters.

Qamar starts fidgeting with her hands. Green dragons. she says at last. I… I mean, we, my family have the blood of green dragons. I was born like this and Mother was born like this and Father was born like this and I never knew their mothers and fathers and the like, but… But I reckon they too looked like this. she briefly stares at the ground before looking Prudence in the eye again. Are they… Are they going to hurt me… I mean, hurt us, again?

Prudence nods her understanding of Qamar's explanation. She briefly considers saying something bland and heroic like 'not if I can help it' in response to the elf woman's quite reasonable question, but instead opts for blunt honesty.

    "F*** if I know."

She turns to Ahmed and Ulubathi and tries to shape her response. If these people think that elves are devils, how are they going to deal with dragons.

"This woman's family trace a special, noble lineage, and her green skin is a mark of this. She is otherwise much like you and me.

"As for matters of faith, I'd guess that there's more than one god worshipped in this town. I'd be happy to know more about your true faith."

Darius is in no rush to hurry back outside, but he listens carefully for the sound of anyone approaching the room where he and his patients are - if he hears someone he will quickly step out and try to draw attention away from them.

He asks the patients what they know of their illness and how it started and examines them in detail. He draws from his healing kit various herbs that are already in prepared form that he thinks would be helpful for their condition. He thinks hard upon all his knowledge of healing... what could have caused these symptoms?

    Daruis

The two elves slowly waking up before you can give only a general rundown of what happened, speaking of being awake and aware one second, then in a vibrant forest, then in a vast and empty expanse, surrounded by a legion of bone white humanoids, with a golden one at their head who wathed them as they began to slip inot unconsuisness, describing a feeling like drowning while still breathing.

Their injuries only add to the strangeness of their stories. Some of what you see suggests them being choked, other signs match those of being exposed to extreme cold, but some only match records you've heard of those attacked by pure forcce of magic and even from those reports something here is different... almost reversed somehow.

    Outside

There's yet grater sneering as you describe the origin of Qamar's features. One muttering the term Shaitan, which Prudence hears as 'foul spirit'. But they seem further stayed from violence.

By any account then, this young lady ougt to be bought before learned men, for them to gauge her nature. And your lord's son ought to meet with our best as well. Our men will acompany you if you have any need for brief arrangements to be made here, then we will depart for the great camp within a half hour.

You can here an attempt at gentleness in Ulubathi's words, but also a very firm insistence.

Prudence, the time left for your tounge's spell is almost estenguised, you have on the order of seconds left.

    Prudence nods her understanding.

"Of course, sirs! Perhaps, then, we can all set off after refreshments. I have few belongings, but each of the others may need to return to their homes to make arrangements for their absences.

I beg your pardon, gentlemen, but as I said, the effort to understand and speak your tongue is taxing for me, and I am near to exhausted. Perhaps we can speak more tomorrow?"

She turns to translate for Qamar and Samuel.

"We'll be taken to see some sort of lorekeepers, and probably that commander they've mentioned. I've asked them for time for each of you to gather what you need from your homes. We should probably take that nice Darius boy as well - he seemed level headed. But I must stress that we should not use any magical abilities, if we can avoid them. My translation magic is used up for the day, now, though."

She gratefully takes back the paper, ink and pen from Qamar, and adds a few more words before all recollection fades from her mind.

Frequently looking back to make sure she isn't followed, Qamar makes her way through the house, moving faster and faster until she's almost running. She darts into the room where she left her parents and without further ado, pulls them both into a tight, wordless hug, burying her head between their shoulders pressed close together.

I was worried too and then I found you lying here half-dead and it was terrible, but now you're better and that's all that matters. the words flow fast out of Qamar's mouth as she stands before the two, slightly trembling, but as cheerful as she can be. As for what happened, I… I don't really understand. Samuel, um, I mean the young lord says we were… The whole town was teleported somehow somewhere strange and I don't think we are in Adelar anymore, because some wird brutes came out of the weird new brush around town and they don't understand our tongue and seem to fear magic. They think… They think I'm a devil. They must not know you are here. she continues, still jabbering and grabs the hands of both elves. Heavens, you two look horrible. he adds suddenly and abruptly. How… What did this to you? When the town shifted here, I too fell and my back hurt a bit for a while but… Not like this. she closes her eyes for a second before looking at Salik and Meraam again. Did you… Did you see the dragons too? The dragons in the great void?

"Dragons.. no. Nothing of dragons, but we saw the great void, the one between our anient home and here should the portals not stand. That we saw, and a figure there, broad and humanoid and more golden than the sun, and an army of folk, who looked like elves but pale white and cruel. They watched as we hung there.... and then when the void had nearly finished us off they crept over us and it was worse... But then we woke up safe here.

As your mother says this your father stands up and wordlessly hugs you, and your mother soon joins the embrace.

And if it is... if that was the void like they spoke of who knows where we are now. Don't worry, we can protect you from those brutes, if they're that scared of magic we can see them off and keep you safe Qamar. You don't have to face them again, we'll talk with the Baron and with the elders of the village and see these brutes off if they won't abide us.

Qamar listens to her parents' account of what they saw in the void, her face confused and her mouth half open. When Meraam brings up how they were attacked, the young elf shudders, but before she could comment on whatshe's just heard, her father speaks up as well. No, no, no! You can't… You can't go out there! she holds onto them as if hoping she can keep them from moving away and out of the building. It's… It's not just fear, it's hatred. Outrage. I… I charmed one of them and it barely helped and they dragged me about anyway. They have weapons and there's… There's more of them, somewhere close by with more soldiers and elders of their own. she starts shaking uncontrollably as she speaks. Please stay inside.
