Re: GLoG 94: Good place to grow up
[Shuttle]
"Well, I know how you hate the pod, so we can just set up some flavorless gel for you." Miranda begins. "And that should take care of your grooming needs, unless they're radically different from those of us mortals. As for waste, well..." She scratches at the back of her head nervously. "Again, it'd be simpler if you could use the pod. Like I said, it covers most metabolic needs. But since you can't... you're not gonna like this..."
And if Sekhmet didn't know what a catheter was before, she does now.

Sekhmet definitely didn't like that explanation. But..."Uh, actually, that's not that bad. As long as I, uh, don't have to keep it in all the time." It beats any solution that engages her claustrophobia, and she doesn't really feel pain if she doesn't want to. "Can you, uh, explain the gel to me though?"Awesome avatar (Kothar, paladin of Tlacua) by Linkele!

"You will. It's not something you want to reinstall every few hours." Miranda clears her throat. "...Anyway, yeah, the gel. It contains different types of nanites that do a bunch of things that are good for your body. Repairs cell damage, rehydrates, balances your microbiome, scrubs foreign contaminants, the like. It's the same stuff we use in the sleeping pods, only at a higher concentration." She smiles. "If it helps, think of it as a sort of all-in-one body wash."

"I, uh, understood some of those words." Mostly just "rehydrate," "cell," "foreign contaminants," and "body wash." Sekhmet looks around. "Uh, I guess we should get moving so we can be back as soon as possible."Awesome avatar (Kothar, paladin of Tlacua) by Linkele!

"Sounds good to me." Miranda smiles.
And as soon as Sekhmet's ready to go, they're off into space.Last edited by Ironsmith; 2021-12-10 at 01:53 PM.

Re: GLoG 94: Good place to grow up
[Abandoned Cabin]
At the edge of the camp, there's one cabin that stands out. It's not particularly run down or anything, but no one appears to be living in it. At least no one who comes out during the day. Or night. But at night, there's a darkness surrounding it, and some have started to whisper of unsettling wails permeating the crisp air. Uneasy rumors have begun to spread amongst the children that the place is haunted.
Dwarf children have been seen from time to time secreting away to the cabin with candy only to never return. Well, except for later the next day, but it's probably a fake dwarf that's been replaced by a skinwalker or something. Hard to say. Those haunted stories are dreadfully unclear and inconsistent.

Abandoned Cabin
Natalie has heard of the cabin, and is curious. So off she goes to investigate it. She's an eighteen-year-old girl, with black hair reaching down past her shoulders and green eyes. Her skin is tanned from spending a lot of time outside, and she's wearing a black skirt and a red hoody, with dark green wellies on her feet. She's also carrying a battered red rucksack.
It's just after lunch when Natalie heads down to the cabin and knocks on the door, carrying a plate of cheddar and piccalilli sandwiches.Terrowin Avatar by HappyTurtle. Much thanks!

Re: GLoG 94: Good place to grow up
[Abandoned Cabin]
After lunch? Why... that's barely spooky at all! There's so much light and everything seems just so normal. A little run down, maybe, but pretty normal.
Well except maybe for the way the door creeks open upon Natalie knocking on it, like it wasn't even latched. And is ancient. Really the door just needs some oil on the hinges. Beyond the immediate door is a long, dark hall with a small filters of dusty light peeking out through the sides of drawn shades. The lightswitch doesn't work and attempting to use it will cause the bulb at the far end of the hallway to pop and break.

Abandoned Cabin
Natalie frowns as the door creaks open, stepping inside. She tries the light, but it doesn't work, so she slips a hand into her pocket and pulls out some aviator sunglasses. She's not putting them on yet, because the door's behind her and there's still quite a bit of light, at least for now. She walks inside and calls out. "Hello? It's Natalie, from GLoG. Can anyone hear me?" She's going to advance down the hall to the nearest door, unless something stops her.Terrowin Avatar by HappyTurtle. Much thanks!

Re: GLoG 94: Good place to grow up
[Abandoned Cabin]
If anyone's there, they don't appear to have replied in such a way that Natalie can hear them.
The first door leads to what appears to be... a dusty daycare place. It looks like it used to be somewhere where kids gathered. Guessing by the toys and books and other discarded things, this room was for kids between the ages of six and eight. Roughly thereabouts. But... why did it stop getting used? There are surely kids around that match that age group. Something about this cabin must have warped it. Made it unwelcome.
The same way a small book suddenly falls from a bookshelf beside the door and threatens to land upon Natalie. It's not a very heavy book, no serious harm can come to her from it, but it's not a paperback either and it might hurt.

Re: GLoG 94: Good place to grow up
Abandoned Cabin
Natalie's sure there's children that age about; perhaps some of Sakura's ever-growing brood. She's got children of most ages, Natalie thinks, not that she knows much about them- she's done a little volunteering in the childcare department, but not much, and mostly spent time with older children.
Natalie peers around from the doorway when the book falls down and bounces off her head. She gasps in surprise, before leaning down and picking it up to flick through. Maybe something was trying to get her to read it, or maybe it's a coincidence.Terrowin Avatar by HappyTurtle. Much thanks!

No... the book was definitely trying to hurt Natalie and scare her off. It thought she could still feel pain!
Presumably. It's hard to tell. Most books don't have feelings, let alone motives.
This particular book is Bridge to Terabithia, so there's plenty in there to read if Natalie wants to take the time to do so. But there's no secret photograph or underlined phrases outlined to make the venture of reading for information an expedient one.

Well, Natalie hasn't read the book (as Earl hasn't, either; he should, he's seen the end of the film) so she frowns a little at it and puts it down on a table, where it hopefully won't fall on her head again. She'll have another glance around the room, before leaving and going to the next door down. She'll open the door and stay outside a moment before walking through, to hopefully prevent a book falling on her head again.Terrowin Avatar by HappyTurtle. Much thanks!

Re: GLoG 94: Good place to grow up
[Abandoned Cabin]
The book does not display any unique anti-gravity abilities that would be necessary to fall upon Natalie's head again and remains firmly planted upon the table.
The next two rooms don't throw anything at Natalie. They each appear to be bedrooms of sorts. Someone must have lived here. But a thin layer of dust suggests no one's been here for at least a few months. The concerning thing is that each room Natalie checks is darker and darker still than the last. As if light itself were being sucked away into the recesses of the cabin.
Until Natalie reaches the final door at the end of the hallway. A presence looms within, unpalpable and shaded, sequestered away from the brightness outside and filling the void with a gloom that emanates from the cracks in the frame. Something sinister and forbidden lay beyond this threshold.
But also, if she opens the door she'll find it really dark inside. Which may pose a problem to her. Or maybe not.

Natalie did come prepared for dark. She'll stand in the doorway and put on the aviator's sunglasses she'd pulled out earlier. They give her the ability to see in the dark, though she's still wearing sunglasses indoors. And in the dark, even; it looks like it shouldn't work.Terrowin Avatar by HappyTurtle. Much thanks!

Re: GLoG 94: Good place to grow up
[Abandoned Cabin]
Natalie will find a barren and hostile room, even more than the previous two that at least had some leftover furniture strewn about. The biggest difference is that following the wall from the door in the corner furthest from the light are two pools of void staring back at her from underneath a dark and tattered hood. The temperature in the room is noticeably lower and the shadow monster appears to be as inky as the darkness Natalie can now see through. Even if that hideous beast takes the form of an eleven year old humanoid.
At least it hasn't eaten Natalie. Yet.

Re: GLoG 94: Good place to grow up
Abandoned Cabin
"Um... hello. I'm Natalie. Are you... OK?" Natalie's really hoping this creature is friendly, whatever it is. Like one of the ghosts everyone just ignores these days, rather than an eldritch horror from beyond space and/or time here to devour souls until it is sated, or something like that. Natalie might have a bit of an overactive imagination for this sort of thing.Terrowin Avatar by HappyTurtle. Much thanks!

Re: GLoG 94: Good place to grow up
[Abandoned Cabin]
The creature either finds Natalie's soul unappetizing or isn't hungry at the moment or is warded by the time of day Natalie has chosen and does not devour Natalie's soul. This time.
It also doesn't seem to react favorably. It may be pondering the implications of that question. There's a drawn out silence that pervades as it stares uncomfortably at Natalie until finally responding... with a shake of its head.

Re: GLoG 94: Good place to grow up
Abandoned Cabin
Natalie's soul is branded, a mark left on it by a prior entity's claim. It's old, and forgotten; Natalie doesn't even realise it's there.
"So you're not OK. Is there anything I can do to help get you OK?" Natalie gestures behind herself, a brief flash of red light as card suite-symbols flare in the air around her as a three-legged stool appears behind her and Natalie sinks down to sit on it. She didn't think, or she'd have fetched it outside to avoid the light in the darkened room.Terrowin Avatar by HappyTurtle. Much thanks!

The shadow monster starts to shake its head again when Natalie's flashes red light. The thing immediately flinches and recoils, seemingly shrinking and folding in on itself.... Cowering? Perhaps.
The flash can let Natalie see that the creature looks more like a young girl dressed up in dark clothes than anything else, if one were to ignore the deep void pits that were her unnatural eyes.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't realise you didn't like light." Although being a creepy shadowchild in the darkest room in the back of an abandoned cabin without any windows should really have been a clue. Natalie forgets sometimes that her magic creates light; it never lasts for long, and is a side-effect rather than the magic's actual purpose.Terrowin Avatar by HappyTurtle. Much thanks!

Perhaps the ambience was too subtle.
The creepy shadowchild does not seem inclined to take vengeance upon Natalie, surprisingly well adjusted to random light attacks. Or maybe its just being polite. I don't know if it can be polite though when all it does is stare. Staring is rude! Or was it flattering? Probably rude.

The shadow creature doesn't know how to answer that. Not very many people ever asked that question to her to begin with. And she's not having issues with something that can be addressed in any normal fashion. Unless Natalie knows how to bring back the dead.
Does Natalie know how to bring back the dead?
This all comes across quite distinctly in uninterrupted stares.

Natalie cannot bring back the dead. She also can't understand the language of stares. Unless there's something supernatural going on with that stare, anyway.
Assuming there isn't, "Um... can you talk?"Terrowin Avatar by HappyTurtle. Much thanks!

The stare has no supernatural qualities. It is an experienced stare however, with a lot of skill points pumped into it along with racial bonuses. A powerful stare indeed.
But not a very communicative one.
The shadow creature slowly nods its head. It can talk.
It's just not recommended.

"If you can tell me what's up, I can see if I can do anything about it?" Although Natalie might not succeed in doing anything, and may not even be capable of helping. Re: GLoG 94: Good place to grow up
[Abandoned Cabin]
Really going to drag it out of the shadow, huh? It tries and tries to think of a way to communicate without speaking. It's had some lessons about reading and manipulating words in the air, but it's been slow learning and Natalie seemed insistent. The abominable monster thinks this is a mistake, but it opens its mouth anyways to give Natalie a verbal reply.
Imagine Natalie was attending a heavy metal concert. The speakers blare music at incomprehensible levels matched only by the fanatical war screams of the hundreds of fans packed into the overcrowded space. Now imagine if each of those fans surrounding Natalie were not fans at all, but in fact heavy metal concerts of their own right all playing simultaneously in an undesired level of surround sound. Except they aren't playing music. They're playing nails on a chalkboard. They're playing metal screeching and whining through a gigantic factory grinder. They're playing that moment of dread when your mother uses your full name.
This is the alarm clock the deep old ones use when they wish to awaken. This is the sound that rends through the air in a shy, muted whisper for Natalie, barely audible as a concussive clash of conflicting, insanity inducing volumes.
"My da- My master died," she murmurs, then falls silent.

Re: GLoG 94: Good place to grow up

Natalie shudders a little at the voice emanating from the not-a-child before her, but her ears don't bleed or leak cerebrospinal fluid, which is overall a positive thing. "I'm... sorry to hear that, um. Would you like a hug?" Natalie needed a hug when she found out her father had died; she wasn't much older than Sasha looks, either. So hopefully she's correct in her guess.Terrowin Avatar by HappyTurtle. Much thanks!

A... hug? When was the last time the shadow monster got a hug? Many lifetimes ago and at least ten years. It has seen other people get hugs and those hugs looked... nice.
The shadow creature eventually nods their head timidly.
