    The Coven
    Spoiler
    Show

A small, nomadic family of Von Carstein vampires fathered by their patriarch, Heinrich Von Carstein. Originating in Sylvania, the Coven has moved through the southern regions of the Empire before crossing the Grey Mountains into Bretonnia and traveling further south until their current residence within a restored, river-side keep within Bordeleaux. The family has survived by both personal power, but mostly by secrecy. Their standard modus operandi is to enter a new region, internally restore an outwardly dilapidated manor, keep or castle, and then secretly claim dominion over the nearby towns and villages, taking only what they need for survival. This has given them a low footprint that has thrown off more than one vampire hunter, with most regions never even knowing the family was there.

The family crest is a grey wolf's head on a black field with a red saltire. Their current residence is Forteresse von Carstein in the North-West of Seigneurie de Bellecombe.

    Heinrich Von Carstein

    Age: Centuries
    Race: Human (Vampire)
    Sex: Male
    Career: Vampire Count (Ex-Noble, Ex-Squire, Ex-Knight, Ex-Captain, Ex-Vampire Thrall, Ex-Politician, Ex-Noble Lord)

Heinrich was born centuries ago in Reikland and was stated to marry the daughter a powerful count within Sylvania to further a family alliance. Though the marriage was a happy one, the blighted land eventually took its toll upon him as he watched the surprisingly loyal peasants exist in stagnation and the nobles conducting themselves with peculiar eccentricity. When the vampiric secret of the elite families was made known to him and he was brought into the fold he was already in his sixth decade of life. However, he had proven to be an excellent and innovative battlefield commander and administrator, and so was deemed too valuable to lose. Despite this, Heinrich showed little "appreciation", and his penchant for innovation saw him eventually disillusioned with Sylvania and its ways. He watched with fascination the onset of gunpowder and artillery, yet was frustrated by his own state's lack of interest. He observed the development of new agricultural methods to generate magnitudes greater caloric production which allowed for greater population carrying capacity, yet was irritated by his fellow vampiric lords utter disinterest in importing these improvements. Time and again he saw improvements pass Sylvania, and as each new invention bettered the armies of the Empire he knew it was only a matter of time until the technological and demographical gap would be so great that not even the vamipre's magical and personal power could bridge it. No longer wishing to inhabit a slowly sinking ship, he went into self-imposed exile with the intent to gather the resources necessary establish his own state, far away from the rigid stupidity of the Sylvanian lords he happily left behind.

If The Coven is to be considered a vampiric family, Heinrich is its unchallenged and undisputed patriarch, having personally given the Blood Kiss to all the other members, except for Regine. If the others are his 'children', she is his grandchild.

    Wulf Von Carstein

    Age: 220
    Race: Human (Vampire)
    Sex: Male
    Career: Champion (Ex-Squire, Ex-Knight, Ex-Sergeant, Ex-Vampire Thrall, Ex-Captain)

A former Reiksguard who fell on the battlefield and whom was brought into vampirism by Heinrich soon after, Wulf is the dedicated son he always wanted. Clear-headed, observant and practical, he shares his fathers vision and loyally fulfills the ends necessary to see it materialise. He views the others in The Coven with a big brothers protective eye, and he is particularly vigilant over Camile. He has a dry and dead-pan sense of humor, and see's his elder sibling responsibility to his others as being both teacher and protector. Despite his outward martial prowess, Wulf is an accomplished player of the Lyre, an instrument he has played for over two centuries and which he fondly remembers using to woo a daughter of a neighboring nobles family, as well as several low-born girls that could keep a secret. He still plays the instrument to this day, and he can be sometimes heard engaging in song with Camile and her singing voice.

    Ulrich Von Carstein

    Age: 170
    Race: Human (Vampire)
    Sex: Male
Career: Wizard Lord (Ex-Apprentice Wizard, Ex-Journeyman Wizard, Ex-Vampire Thrall, Ex-Master Wizard)

A gifted wizard in life, but born from common stock, Ulrich always had a slight inferiority complex that saw him become extra studious. Possessed of a powerful intellect, he has a sarcastic, almost lazy attitude to life that downplays how energetic he actually is when seized by his academic pursuits. Indeed, of the entire family, Ulrich see's himself as something of a ladies man, his passion for women still very much alive, as he boasts (out of ear-shot of Camile, of course) of how he never had a lonely bed during the travels of his living life. Doubling as the Coven's alchemist, Ulrich can often be found taking japes at Wulf and secretly competing with Viktor.

    Viktor Von Carstein

    Age: 80
    Race: Human (Vampire)
    Sex: Male
    Career: Artillerist (Ex-Student, Ex-Engineer, Ex-Vampire Thrall, Ex-Pistolier)

Viktor is a quiet and thoughtful man with an excellent head for numbers and a love of devices and gunpowder. He was the last Imperial brought into the Coven by Heinrich before the group crossed the Grey Mountains, and, like the others, he is drawn into his vision for founding their own state, whose technological advances he will happily oversee and manage. Viktor can often be found in his workshop, tinkering with his devices, maintaining the family firearms or making new ones. He is particularly fond of dueling and is an outstanding marksman with longrifle and cannon. He is also an excellent gambler, with his numerical expertise often employed in games of chance.

    Camile Von Carstein

Age: 45 (appears in her mid-20s)
    Race: Human (Vampire)
    Sex: Female
    Career: Duelist (Ex-Noble, Ex-Courtier, Ex-Vampire Thrall)

Before Regine's arrival, Camile was the little sister of the coven, and her feminine touch can be found all-throughout their temporary fortress. A noble in life who could not naturally conceive, Camile, without her husband knowing, secretly paid a lowborn man and wife for their "fittest" infant so that she could pass it off as her own and give her beloved husband the son he had always wanted. Having come to learn of this, Heinrich was impressed with Camile's sense of duty to her family and position, and so gave her the Blood Kiss, with her grieving husband believing she had died during childbirth and raising his "son" as his own. Since then, Camile has been a 'touch of light' in the family, and has become a particularly apt student of the sword beneath Wulf's instruction and the gun from Viktor, with Camile often carrying a brace of pistols and a sword on her person. Friendly, bubbly and enchanting, Camile is the archetype sweet, young Bretonnian noblewoman, with her predatory vampiric nature well hidden beneath the silk of her smile. Being raised a noble with Bretonnia, Camile adheres to proper decorum, typically, though she bends it with her playerful personality. Additionally, she is an accomplished singer, and often uses her voice in conjunction with Wulf's Lyre to entertain the Coven.

For her 'sacrifice' in accepting her new life following the Blood Kiss from Heinrich, Camile was allowed to finally sire and have the child she always wanted. In this capacity, she watched from afar and chose Regine; visiting her in the night and using her vampiric powers of persuasion to give the girl no choice, just as Heinrich had done to her.

    Regine Von Carstein

    Age: 20
    Race: Human (Vampire)
    Sex: Female
Career: Vampire Thrall (Ex-Thief, Ex-Cat Burglar, Ex-Master Thief)

The youngest member of the Coven, having only recently been initiated. Regine's inclusion into the family was a gift bestowed on Camile by Heinrich for her sacrifice over two decades ago, and she is, by all accounts, considered his grand-daughter. From an orphan girl in L'Anguille who mastered the arts of thievery, stealth and shadow to now the newest member of one of the oldest aristocratic families in the Known Worlde, Regine has much to learn, but all of eternity to do so.

    Former Careers: Ex-Thief, Ex-Cat Burglar, Ex-Master Thief

    Synopsis:
    Spoiler: Prior Life
    Show
A surprisingly fit and athletic looking young woman from Bretonnia, Regine is a talented graduate of the School of Hard Knocks and the University of Getting the Dung Kicked out of Her. Raised in the underworld of the port city of L'Anguille, she is an orphan whom, for a low-born girl in Bretonnia, had two basic options in life: the brothels or pickpocketing. Regine chose the latter and proved to possess a natural talent for the craft to the point that she became a fully-fledged home-invading thief in her mid-teenage years. From the houses of wealthy, fat merchants to even the vaults of less organized banks, Regine could infiltrate before making off with sacks of curvaceous girth. But, the underworld is the underworld, and she wasn't the only criminal plying their trade within the expansive, prosperous city of L'Anguille. Thieves guilds did not take kindly to a skilled, rogue agent such as she, nor did merchants enjoy arriving at their warehouses following a break in. She made enemies, though few actually knew her name, and though something of a self-serving rogue, Regine played by the general unwritten rules of the criminal landscape, until a botched job almost saw her captured, while racketeers of an temporary employer were nicked in her place. Blamed for the screw-up, though maintaining her innocence, Regine had to pay exorbitant sums to the right people to ensure she didn't end up face down in a river. This gave her the breathing room necessary to pull off a few more small jobs to re-acquire some coin. Nevertheless, the affair soured the girls tastes to her home-town, as she now, for the first time, looks beyond the walls of her city for a means to move on to greener pastures.

Regine has made a surprisingly stellar reputation as one of the best thieves in the city, given that she's a young woman in the Bretonnian underworld. It's a world into which she was born, raised and unlike 99% of girls inhabiting it, she did not resort to the brothels or madamhood. Instead she was something of a tom boy, with a more masculine personality that is fiercely independent. Her nickname, 'Loup', is one that is not supposed to be intimidating, but is instead a term of endearment. During her first solo job, Regine managed to steal a case from a nobles carriage and brought it to her boss, believing that it was filled with beautiful - and expensive - nobles clothing that could be fenced for a princely sum. Instead, when they opened the chest they were greeted with half a dozen beautiful wolf pelts. Not quite the pay-day one was hoping, followed by jokes that she had stolen from a family of werewolves, but the nickname, and the playful spirit behind it, stuck.

As a side hustle Regine would run invite-only card games, paying off the authorities to look away and hiring local brothel workers to liven the games up and keep the players gambling. Naturally, she'd give a cut of her proceeds to the local gang to ensure they got their taste.

The newest Von Carstein vampire in the Known Worlde. Tall, athletic, raven-haired and pale-skinned, Regine Von Carsteins angular features frame a pair of blood-red eyes that stare with an enthusiastic intelligence.

Sorry, I got a bit carried away there and posted the biggest post I've ever produced on these forums lol.

In short, she attends all their lessons and absorbs it all, learning from success and failure. Her part of going on a ride with Ulrich is just part of the montage, not intended to lead into anything.

Large tents are normally 2gc, but I added 1gc for the extra dark colorer, bit heavier material.

She's also dropping her Pass for Human bloodgift, meaning she currently causes Fear - that means anyone present who does not cause fear themselves or have immunity, have to succeed at a Willpower roll in order to do anything, otherwise they stand there trembling in fright. (they can't attack, dodge, parry, charge, nothing, until they pass a willpower save)

    Attack 1: (1d100)[54] vs TN 96 (66 base + 30 Unaware opponent)
    Damage: (1D10+6)[8]
    If Fury: (1d100)[6] vs TN 96, (1D10)[2]

    Attack 2: (1d100)[77] vs TN 96 (66 base + 30 Unaware opponent)
    Damage: (1D10+6)[13]
    If Fury: (1d100)[64] vs TN 96, (1D10)[7]

    Attack 3: (1d100)[90] vs TN 96 (66 base + 30 Unaware opponent)
    Damage: (1D10+6)[13]
    If Fury: (1d100)[68] vs TN 96, (1D10)[3]

Assuming nothing improper, 8, 13 and 13 damage from behind to the shaman.

Strength check: (1d100)[96] vs TN 64

So 3 degrees of failure takes off 3 yards.

    She can leap 12 yards (Movement 6 + 6 Strength bonus = 13) - 3 = 9, half 9 for standing leap is 5 (rounded up) + 1 for Swashbuckler = 6 yards. Regine can leap 6 yards with that roll.

    Allg mate.

As it's the beginning of Combat, we'll need an Initiative roll. This is a D10+the agility bonus of the characters involved. My guess is that this is 1D10+3 for the Norscans and the fire shaman. Regine rolled a 15.

Then there's actions, which are broken up into 2 half-round actions a round. You can move, make a single attack, go full defensive etc or you can spend a full round to make swift attacks, which is attack as many times as you have Attack characteristic.

So Regine has 3 attacks. But, if she wanted to do all 3 attacks in one round, she'd have to do a Full Round action, otherwise she could only attack once with a Half-round action.

    So:

Norscan 2 is doing a Full turn run (assuming), past Regine, thus why she can make an attack on him.

Fiery Spirit is spending a Full ROund action coalescing.

The Cloud will make a Feint and a Standard Attack. However, he'll need to get within melee range with Regine, as she's a couple of squares away from him, so it can either make a Feint action or a Standard Attack against her.

Norscan 1, let's say he's the one near Regine, makes a Guarded attack. That's a full round action, and he takes -10% Weapon Skill on his To Hit roll, but he gains +10% to any Dodge or Parry attempts.

I'm assuming that Regine is going to go first, correct me if I'm wrong when you roll initiative.

First I'll roll her attack of opportunity on the Norscan running past her.

Attack of Opportunity: (1d100)[30] vs TN 66
    Damage: (1D10+6)[16]
    If Fury: (1d100)[23] vs TN 66, (1D10)[2]

Regine hit the Norscan in the head (30 to hit turns into 03% on Hit Location, which is the Head).

She also rolled and confirmed Ulrics Fury.

She did 18 damage to the Norscans head.

As he's just a Norscan raider, my guess is that he's basically got the stat block of the Footpads from page 234 of the core rule book, with a Toughness bonus of 3, so 18 - 3 = 15 damage, which is likely 3 damage over their 12 wounds.

That makes it a critical strike.

That means she rolls on the Critical Strike table on page 133 with her value of +3: (1d100)[21]

    21 along the +3 = 8.

8 value for a Head critical strike is: Face shattered and knocked to the ground. The character is now helpless and bleeding out, with 20% chance to die each round until medical aid stems the bleeding. If attacked again, he dies.

    Regine's actions:

Half-Action: Regine will attack the Norscan in front of her.

Half-Action: Regine will tumble backwards 3 yards, putting the Norscan between herself and the cloud and the fire-shaman. (she's hoping the fire shaman will ignite the vaporous cloud if they make contact)

Half-action Attack on Norscan 1 who is making a guarded attack:

    Attack 1: (1d100)[90] vs TN 66
    Damage: (1D10+6)[13]
    If Fury: (1d100)[28] vs TN 66, (1D10)[10]

Shame, that would've been a good damage roll.

Second Half Action: Tumbling backwards: (1d100)[97] vs TN 64

Jfc how many 90s am I going to roll. All the same, it's the same as earlier: she can leap 12 yards (Movement 6 + 6 Strength bonus = 13) - 3 = 9, half 9 for standing leap is 5 (rounded up) + 1 for Swashbuckler = 6 yards.

Regine tumbles backwards 3 yards. This puts her 4 yards away from the Norscan; not far enough that he can Charge and not close enough that he can attack her without moving.

She's putting him between herself and the smoke/fire thing.

For anyone reading, the GM has gone on a Hiatus from this and the associated game.

So, I will be finishing this encounter/mini-adventure with die rolls here and writing the results in the IC, and then merging this towards the main game.

Insert playing with myself jokes here.

"Of all the words by tongue and pen, by far the saddest are "I could have been...""

"The first rule of success is to have a vision. You see if you don’t have a vision of where you are going, if you don’t have a goal for where to go, you’ll drift around and never end up anywhere...can you imagine a majority of people don't know where they are going? I knew where I was going!” – Arnold Schwarzenegger
