Castlebot was able to break off a piece of rock with one teeny-tiny hand. That, plus the text, makes me think the rocks are fragile. Aside from acids and the like, I don't know of many things that make rocks fragile, but it doesn't seem acidy.

Maybe its sandstone and the environment inside has changed with all the work done recently to make it turn fragile?

The Castle-bot refers to the stone as 'rotting,' and there are different colored veins all throughout. The ordinary reason for something like this to happen would be a high level of activity by chemosynthetic bacteria within the internal pores of the rock itself, which is quite natural. Any effect that effectively turned bacterial activity up to eleven - radiation, a flush of nutrients, etc. could cause widespread degradation of the overall structure of the rock layers.

Interesting, and would a 7 or 8 level of bacterial activity over a long period of time (because of Prende's Lantern) have the same effect?

I dunno, rock isn't widely known for its internal pore system. Yes, it can happen in light igneous rock, or sedimentary rock with water-soluble components or a history of worm activity (have we seen any geologist Sparks yet?) But then they'd have to explain that in comic with real science instead of SCIENCE!! (Can rock that's not immersed in water even get a flush of nutrients? Irradiating bacteria isn't going to make them grow faster if there's nothing to eat, they'll just mutate faster.) Also, the Castle is made of all manner of things, and is filled with curios, but has never seen this before.

New splash page: looks like many many stories of temples with crumbled floors. I'm betting on some kind of Source.

    Edit: new comic!

It could be a pool of Dyne-like water, modified at the source by the Other and the British sparks, so that it has strong karstic effects that the Castle has never seen before. Those could be dyne-transformed Deepdwellers like the one in the whale. We know that the Songkeeper (aka the Cetacean Broadcaster) has gone insane because of cursed water. This could be an inlet leading to his position.

I'm not certain that artistic similarity is sufficient to conclude these creatures are related to the deep dwellers. Also, I'm not sure the deep dwellers are related to the Great Cetaceans at all.

OTOH, conservation of story suggests these creatures are tied to the main plot.

Well, looking back at the comics where they pinpointed this island to go look at, they did say this was the area in the center of the problem zone the Deep Dwellers and the Cetaceans were concerned about. They obviously had connections.

Bear was only comparing paw size to rod size.

Four armed people is the big reveal. Lady Steelgarter has four arms. That, my friends, cannot be a coincidence, and we may discover that there's a widget that requires four arms to operate.

It will take Agatha a day or two to build a belt-on clank to give her four arms.

A DAY OR TWO? Maybe an HOUR or two! And that's only because she had to include laser finger guns and a deploy-able plasma cannon. Obviously.
